Latent and Classical Learning

In order to prove and understand a theory a psychologist must test their hypothesis, and to do so they must establish a case study involving learning styles. There are several widely used learning functions these include latent, insight learning and classical and operant conditioning. Latent and insight learning styles are compared to operant and classical conditioning, which were established and used by many in the field of psychology. The main objective of this paper is to determine if latent and insight learning differed significantly from operant and classical conditioning. As a group we came to determine that latent and insight learning do not differ significantly from classical and operant conditioning, but their objectives are what separate them from each other. Insight and latent learning do not differ significantly from classical and operant conditioning; instead they accomplish different goals using similar methods. Our group was comprised of 7 girls in first year, 6 of th

Thirteen Days in October -1962

The world came close to blowing itself up during Thirteen Days in October 1962. Thirteen Days captures the urgency, suspense and paralyzing chaos of the Cuban Missile Crisis. Two superpowers over armed with nuclear weapons challenged each other in what could have spiraled so easily into the ultimate catastrophe. Robert Kennedy's Thirteen Day has become a minor classic of one of the most dangerous moment in human history. The United States showed us how well the Cuban Missile Crisis was managed. The USAF U-2 spy planes discovered photos that revealed the Soviet Union was in the process of placing nuclear weapons in Cuba. These weapons had the capability of wiping out most of the United States in minutes, if they became operational. President John F. Kennedy and his advisors had to come up with a plan of action against the So

My Take on the Industrial Revolution

A coal fire roars, pressure builds, and pistons crank the gears of what we know today as the Industrial Revolution. If I could go back to that time, specifically to the year of 1775, I would jump at the opportunity to work with geniuses like James Watt to create technological history. What draws me to this era is the sheer amount of new technology, innovation, and growth that surfaced in such a short period of time. So many inventions that shaped the future were created. Whitney's cotton gin, the telegraph, the sewing machine and most importantly Watt's Steam Engine transformed the world and set the blueprint for today's technological revolution. To be able to witness the apex of engineering and take part in the design of these machines would be a fantastic experience for me. My extensive interest in engineering, electronics and mechanics would lead me to choose 1775 to experience for a year. I would go back and be part of the growth because

Aboriginal Spirituality

My Guardian Spirit I have chosen the dog as my guardian spirit. Dogs and humans have always had a significant connection. They symbolize loyalty, reliability, friendship, guidance, assistance, intelligence, forgiveness and a general love of life. I admire all of the qualities that dogs possess. I have my own dog and I work at an animal clinic, so I spend a lot of time with many different dogs. They are very important to human lives, as they have been proven to improve both our physical and emotional health. I don't think that we, humans, always value these important qualities as much as we should. Art is a big part of my life and has been for a long time. Instead of blending a photo of a dog with a photo representing art, I decided to draw what I thought best represented my guardian spirit. The drawing I did shows a German Shepherd

Writing a Formal Paper Using APA Style

Formal writing using the American Psychological Association (APA) style includes a preference for using a 12 point font with Times New Roman typeface. APA requires paragraphs to be double spaced with the first sentence indented five to seven spaces or a ½ inch from the margin. Margins should be one-inch on all sides. You should also use the tab key to set the indentation for paragraphs. Please note that the undergraduate nursing faculty requires that two spaces be used at the end of sentences, although if preparing a manuscript for publication, then only one space would be used per APA. Please note that the default in word programs is two spaces. In reference citations on the reference page only one space after all forms of punctuation is used. The running head should be in CAPITAL letters and included on all pages on the left; page numbers on the right. Please note however that the words Running head is only in the title page as illustrated. If you do not know how to create

Movie Summary - Rosemary's Baby

According to Stephen King, people crave horror movies to renew our sense of normality and to satisfy the evil in us (King3). Films such as Roman Polanski's, Rosemary's Baby captures a change in the quotidian as Rosemary experience an encounter with the devil. The movie begins with a young couple, Rosemary and Guy Woodhouse, who rented an apartment in Manhattan. Rosemary's husband, Guy, is a rising actor, who has been part of several T.V. commercials but nothing big. Her husband's ambitions of becoming a well-known actor lead him into making a deal with the devil. Guy in exchange for fame agrees to give his wife and his first son to Satan. The use of lighting and the composition of the frames reveal the main character traits. In the beginning of the of the movie as Rosemary and Guy are moving into the new apartment, the only light the audience sees is the light coming in through the window. The lack of light represents the absence of the divine and the presence of evil. The darkness

Societal Gentlemen in Great Expectations

Pip, by virtue of his inheritance, views himself more in the Sewellian mold-a gentleman via class status and wealth. His idea of being a gentleman has nothing to do with morality or integrity. In his desire to raise himself up in order to impress Estella, he becomes blinded by ambiƟon. He is a poor boy who scores easy riches and thinks more of his outer shell than his heart or head. Consequently, Pip dresses the part of the dandy and wastes his Ɵme and money with the like-minded and foolish Finches of the Grove. He disowns his humble origins and all but abandons those who love him most. Pip's journey reflects Dickens' own youth as a struggling clerk and reporter who hid his family's shameful history of bankruptcy under his dandy disguise and social ambiƟons. In Great ExpectaƟons, Dickens has Pip eventually reject the Victorian concept of a gentleman and embrace the example of Joe. Joe doesn't need the Ɵtle and Dickens never uses it in reference to him. He is a true gentle man by n

Art and the Industrialization of Montreal

Focusing on the first half of the twentieth century, one can see the city of Montreal taking shape gradually growing to become Canada's first metropolis. A metropolis is a significant economic, political, and cultural center, as well as the critical role as a hub for commercial activity, connections, and communications for those both domestic and abroad. Social, economic, and commercial life in Montreal became vastly enriched during the period following the turn of the century with architecture developed at a lighting pace as territory is expanded and growing ever more diverse in infrastructure. Culturally life in Montreal underwent ever-growing influences stemming from its neighbor to the south. The United States had a particularly strong influence on popular culture in Montreal, despite the constant historical and ongoing influences from Europe in many facets of life. The art world was also undergoing a transformation and we begin to see fundamental reconsiderations in this sphere

Healthy Eating Habits

As a college student, I seem like an independent and responsible person because I have to go school to support my education, and work to support my daily life. As a result, I have no social life. Since I did not have time to take good care of myself, I ate unhealthy food such as: junk food and fast food; I often skip meals which damage my stomach. Based on my assessment results, I realized I had unhealthy eating habits. Therefore, I want to change my current diet to a healthier one to improve my heathy lifestyle. Basically, I have no idea how to change my bad diet, how to begin a new plan, and how to apply this into my daily eating habit. By using these theories: health belief model, transtheoretical module, SMART principles, and dimensions of wellness, however, I will eventually have a good plan to build effectively my healthy goal. I start to add some specific essential ideas into sessions of each theory to organize my lists clearly. The first theory I would like to apply in my plan

Liberty and Equality for Women

In the past, men and women have been treated differently. Women did not have rights and opportunities such as their liberty and equality. Married women had few rights in the eyes of the law. Women were not even permitted to vote. They were not allowed to enter professions such as medicine or law. The opportunities were never there for women to get an education because no colleges or universities would accept a female. Certain activities were prohibited to women including attending churches. They were bound to daily house tasks and totally dependent on men. Many authors such as: Lisa Foderaro, Amy S Patterson, Jennifer L Pozner, Pia Cayetano, Theo-Ben Gurirab, and Irene Wood have raised their voice to advocate and support women. Women want respects, equality and liberty in the society. Today, women should be treated with greater respect and equality because they play many important roles in family and society. A family will not be perfect and whole without wife and mother. She plays sig

Stimulants - Helpful or Harmful?

Introduction With three out of every thirty children suffering from Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), it is crucial that we carefully examine the treatments offered for these disabilities, which are spreading slowly through out the youth society ("ADDitude: Living Well with Attention Deficit"). ADHD and ADD are mental disorders that are most prevalent in childhood, and cause hyperactivity and inattentive or impulsive behavior. The treatments for ADHD and ADD include stimulant medication, non-stimulant medication and behavioral therapy. The majority of children who are affected by ADHD or ADD rely on stimulant medications, rather than non stimulant medications or behavioral therapy to treat their disabilities. As the popularity of these medications rise, we must ask ourselves, are these stimulant drugs helpful or harmful to our children? Amphetamine and Methamphetamine The main chemicals that are used in the most commonly p

Biography of Benjamin Turner

Nat Turner was born into slavery October 2nd, 1800 on a plantation in Southampton County, Virginia. He became a preacher who felt as though he had been chosen by God himself to lead slaves from bondage. August 21st, 1831 Nat Turner led a violent insurrection. For six weeks he hid but was eventually caught and hung. The killing of Nat Turner resulted in even harsher laws against slaves and the end of the emancipation movement in the region. Turner made history as leader of one of the most gruesome slave revolts in America. Born on a plantation to Benjamin Turner, who instructed him to become knowledgeable in reading, religion, and writing. As a small child people thought he had a special talent because he spoke of and explained things that happened before his birth. Some of these people even made assumptions that he would certainly be a prophet. Turner was into his religion deep

The Effects of Hurricane Sandy

For many centuries, the world has witnessed numerous natural disasters (Josef, 2013). Although many tend to be man-made in regards to terrorism and wars, mother-nature has definitely taken her toll on the share of damage (Josef, 2013). During the 2012 Atlantic hurricane season, one of the most destructive hurricanes of the season, as well as the second-costliest hurricane in history to hit the United States took place (Blake, 2012). Hurricane Sandy is known as a; "typical late-season post-tropical cyclone", that swept through the Caribbean and up the East Coast of the United States during October of 2012 (Toro, 2013). Millions of individuals throughout five Caribbean nations, more specifically; The Bahamas, Cuba, Haiti, Jamaica and Puerto Rico were affected in result of this historical natural disaster (Toro, 2013). Individuals and properties throughout the United States of America were also affected due to Sandy (Toro, 2013). Hurricane Sandy was primarily associated with a t

Native American Teenagers

Native American teenagers face a lot of challenges because we are still trying to recover everything that we lost when we were originally thought to be the inferior race. One might actually wonder how the nations indigenous populations became "inferior" cultures on their own land, or how a nation could have committed such atrocities in the name of "progress". Whether or not its on their own land, the acts that were committed by Columbus and the Europeans should never be done, it is wrong and immoral. When you look at a Native American`s life, you can see very clearly that culture is a huge part of their life. Natives have a lot of ceremonies that they use throughout time. Whether it is blessing the canoes so that they can be put in the water, or it's the giving back to nature when you collect cedar or roots of any kind. Any of these things that the natives do is very sacred to them. When you take these ceremonies from them you aren't just taking a routine from them, you are taking a pa

Successful Author - Michael Crichton

Michael Crichton was an accomplished man. A Harvard graduate and a successful author, producer, and screenwriter, he created the "techno-thriller" genre by blending hard science with the intensity of action and mystery. However, this ended up being the sole selling point of his novels, especially in the 1987 novel Sphere. Sphere's success and readability is based solely on its fast paced, intense plot and Crichton's use of hard science to make the events seem plausible. On the literary plane, it is poorly constructed, follows a formula plot, and is generally bad writing. Crichton was born in 1942 in Chicago, Illinois (State 271). The son of a journalist, he received a great deal of early encouragement and inspiration to become a writer. He was first published at 14, when he submitted a travel journal to the New York Times. The travel editor lived in the same town and had a daughter that went to school with Crichton, so it's probable that he knew who wrote it and published

Like a Winding Sheet by Ann Petry

Sigmund Freud believed if a person does not release his frustration and anger then he will succumb to his ID and burst into rage or some sort trauma ("The Psyche"). This is no more evident then in Ann Petry's "Like A Winding Sheet," the character of Johnson who is a working class black American in a white supremacy time. Racial discrimination at workplace/society and not being able to release his frustration in proper manner is the direct cause of Johnson's violent breakdown. The constant felling of ache and fatigue had caused him to be frustrated. It had started to take a toll on his relationship with his wife Mae. As she would be fresh and ready in the morning and he would be still in bed trying to get the courage to move his legs. Johnson was late for work again because of an argument with Mae. The foreman at work Mrs. Scott had scolded him for being late again. Johnson replies "it's my legs; somehow they don't ever get rested." (217) Mrs. Scott says "Excuses. You guys always got excuses; and the niggers are the worse. I don't care what's wrong with your legs. You get in here on time. I'm sick of you niggers-." (217) Johnson becomes

Lincoln's 2nd Inaugural Address

The nation divided had been at war for 4 years, President Lincoln was reelected for a second term, with the end of the Civil War and the abolishment of slavery in sight, Lincoln gave his second inaugural speech on Saturday, March 4, 1865. Due to this being his second address, Lincoln felt there was no need for one as lengthy as his first, but still as powerful. Through his diction, arrangement, tone and appeal to common Christian values, Lincoln unites a broken country by creating a spirit of a National Unity through forgiveness. The war was coming to an end, and slavery was only days away from abolishment (Kairos), when President Lincoln gave his speech, not of happiness for the end of war but for the sadness of its result. Brother had killed brother, cousin killed cousin, countryman had killed countryman. Over 600,000 dead Americans, the time now was for Reconstruction. It was time to move forward together with God, and rebuild the country and all work as one, "With high

Play Analysis - Trifles by Susan Glaspell

Symbolism plays a major part in the play "Trifles." From the very beginning of the play, symbolism is evident in the first line. Glaspell (1916) writes, "The kitchen in the now abandoned farmhouse of John Wright, a gloomy kitchen, and left without having been put in order-unwashed pans under the sink, a loaf of bread outside the breadbox, a dish towel on the table- other signs of incomplete work" (1927). The author starts the play describing how empty and a mess the everyday lives of the Wrights were. Throughout the play, symbolism remains a constant that lets the reader examine who the characters really are. First, let's delve into the symbolism of the kitchen where much of the play takes place. When the county attorney went to wash his hands, he shouts, "Dirty Towels! Not much of a housekeeper, would you say, ladies?"(Glaspell, 1930) The messiness of the kitchen leads the reader to believe a couple of things. One, Mrs. Wright was so distracted by arr

The Cardiovascular System

The cardiovascular system consists of a pump and a complex series of tubes. Its function is to supply every cell of the body with its needs (O 2 , glucose, amino acids, lipids, vitamins, hormones, heat, inorganic ions, H 2 O, .. etc.) and to remove waste products (CO 2 , H 2 O, lactate, protons, urea, heat, etc. The supply to each cell should be in accordance with its needs. There are ~10 14 cells in the body so supplying each with its needs, which are different for each cell type and change with cell activity, is a formidable task. While this complex task generally continues successfully without any conscious activity on our part, inevitably there are conflicts from time to time and priorities have been set (by evolution) which determine which cells are highest priority and have a protected circulation during times of stress. If the blood supply to the brain ceases for > 10s we lose consciousness (potentially a disaster in evolutionary terms). Consequently supplying blood to the brai

Satirical Analysis - A Modest Proposal

In Jonathan Swift's "A Modest Proposal," Swift argues that the Irish might improve their national economy and poverty if they sell their children as food for those who are well to do. It is important to note that Swift, as an Englishman, has a certain perspective towards the Irish as a whole, and that is particularly that English people are better off than the Irish. One can plainly see, however, that Swift's use of numerous amounts of rhetorical devices in his solutions to the Irish prove that he is intending to only engage in playful humor regarding the topic of their current economic position, and can be seen through his use of irony, exaggeration, and understatement. One of the rhetorical devices used by Jonathan Swift in "A Modest Proposal" was irony. Irony is irony that is used when someone says something that actually has a different or opposite meaning. In one of Swift's resolutions, he says that a great idea for reducing poverty in Ireland would be if Iris

Basketball and the NBA

The NBA is the most highly regarded basketball league in the world. Since its establishment in 1946, there have been many different changes to rules both big and small. After 67 years that tends to happen to organizations. The question that has been lurking in the depths of fan's minds for the past two decades, which many knew would inevitably be asked, is whether or not the NBA is becoming a softer league. To answer this question, one must compare the rules, players, and pace of the game today to that of the overall game of the 1990's. In today's era, fans and critics, mostly critics, have begun to discuss whether or not players in this era can compare to players from the 1990's. Some argue that the rules, as well as the players, are softer, that players play differently based on their physical build, and that this era has a different overall focus. Although the NBA's rules have changed over the years, the game of basketball is still essentially the same; a player's objective is to

Written on the Body by Jeanette Winterson

According to Judith Butler "[i]f gender is the cultural meanings that the sexed body assumes, then a gender cannot be said to follow from a sex in any one way" (6). By this quote, Butler wants to argue the idea that both sex and gender are products of the culture; we can say that they are socially constructed. We can relate this statement with the novel Written on the Body written by Jeanette Winterson. The novel deals with identity, sexuality and discourse. The author does not focus on an issue to find an answer in her novel; she focuses on the idea of telling a story in a different way. She concentrates on cultural boundaries, which are the binary pairs that society is based on, and she deconstructs the binary pair based on gender, which is male and female. Jeanette wants to escape binary oppositions and she uses a lot of literary issues in order to show the deconstruction of boundaries, such as fairy tales, romances, among others. We find that Winterson plays with the ambi

Definition of Race

Definition of Race Framing a definition of race is an intimidating task as both biological and social considerations factor into the concept. Though the United States Declaration of Independence states that, "all men are created equal" (The Declaration of Independence, 2014), even its intent has come under careful scrutiny. Some have considered that the mention of just "men" within the declaration implies the exclusion of women and children. Yet, it is this same document which has been cited by people such as Abraham Lincoln, Elizabeth Candy Stanton, and Martin Luther King, Jr., in their historic passionate quests for equal treatment of others, which certainly opposes racism. Racism is a substandard divide determined by subordinate values assigned to particular groups of people who are considered less important or the minority group in society. Consequently, the context in which the Declaration of Independence uses "all men," is considered today as a eup

Creation of the Church of England

It is unlikely, in 1509 when Henry VIII came to power, that his intention was to destroy the establishment of the Church in England as it had existed for centuries. His decisions were influenced by his failure to produce a legitimate male heir, the Pope's refusal to grant the King what he wished, and the desire for the wealth that he knew was held by the Church in his kingdom. The Break with Rome during the reign of Henry VIII was not a planned split but more a series of events that gained momentum, culminating in the creation of the Church of England. Henry had married Catherine of Aragon, his deceased brother's wife, sanctioned by Papal Bull, in 1509. The marriage lasted eighteen years and produced one daughter, Mary, before Henry showed signs of being discontent. Catherine was a devout Catholic, as was Henry's father, and Henry himself was raised in this faith, which was the accepted religion for England and Wales. Henry's father had not had any conflicts with the Pope during his re

Shylock in The Merchant of Venice

Shakespeare's Merchant of Venice consists of humorous, passionate, heart wrenching, and sometimes violent scenes. The central figure that corrupts the minds of readers is of course, Shylock. In being the antagonist, he appears as a money hungry, self absorbed, Jewish advocate who later on becomes a victim; left without so much as his own blood, and dignity. It is through the eyes of modern readers that Shylock gradually transforms from the highly despised villain, to the highly sympathized victim. Historically, readers would have had a different outlook on Shakespeare's use of comedy with relation to Shylock, than modern readers will perceive after reading The Merchant of Venice. Shakespeare's audience would have felt more comedic and would've laughed at Shylock's misfortune, rather than modern readers who will sympathize it. Shakespeare's audience would have found humour in Shylock fuming over losing his jewels, daughter, and even his forced conversion to Christianity. This humour c
