Eclipse - The Twilight Saga

Throughout the course of Eclipse, the third installment of the Twilight Saga by Stephenie Meyer, Bella Swan is faced with numerous life-changing choices. This particular novel in the series catches the eye of critics and reviewers internationally for its "thrills, chills, and [lots] of romance" (Rouyer) and they find that it explores more mature themes in comparison with the previous novels. In general, Eclipse is a novel that delves more into the dramatic love triangle between Bella, Edward Cullen, and Jacob Black, and who she chooses. Along with this comes the decision to marry Edward or not which is immediately related to her obsession with being changed into a vampire (much to the disapproval of Edward, and much to the approval of the Volturi) like her beloved Cullen's; this obsession begins in the first novel of the saga not long after she discovers that Edward is in fact a vampire. The readers are in a constant state of wondering with regards to Bella as she is const

Legacy and Rituals of the Aztecs

Human sacrifice was practiced to some extent by all of the ancient civilizations of Mesoamerica. Most historians believe that before the era of the Aztec empire in 1427, other cultural natives in Tenochtitlan practiced it, but only on a minor scale. The Aztecs were a culture that dominated the Valley of Mexico in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. Sadly, many of the Aztecs didn't survive after the arrival of the Spanish conquistador Hernan Cortes, however, during the earlier years, the Aztec culture thrived because they became one of the most advanced civilizations due to their religion and success in agriculture. To understand how and why human sacrifices were practiced, it is crucial to understand the fundamental ideas of the Aztec people and their religion. The Aztec religion called for a daily performance of human sacrifices in order to please the Gods and give them quality honoring. "In many parts of the Mesoamerican world, the ritual killing of plants, animals, and hum

Teachers and Non-Delegable Duty of Care

In today's society, people employed into the workforce must all abide to certain regulations and laws according to their corresponding work duties, enforcing those associated to follow and perform accordingly. In South Australia, there are regulations which were formed for people who are employed to work with children and youth. These regulations are implemented to give those employed; the responsibility to "take reasonable care to avoid acts or omissions which [they] can reasonably foresee would be likely to [injure people]" (Raniolo,R.). Essentially, the purpose of a teacher is to make each individual student want to succeed and inspire to achieve their goals in life. Teachers must provide an environment which each student feels comfortable in for them to develop social and learning skills. They also need to be effective in their role as to structure the learning program to facilitate different types of students and acknowledge their learning capabilities, but to also mai

Determination in Santiago and Singh

When a mind is set on a task, it gets done. Whether it is as challenging as biking across a state or completing the unimaginable, it can be done as long as the participant is dedicated to its completion. Both Santiago from The Old Man and the Sea and Singh from The Last Voyage of the Ghost Ship overcome life challenges with passion and drive. Santiago exhibits this dedication with his attitude in never giving up no matter what the odds. Singh shows his passion and drive through trying to push the townspeople to see who he really is and by doing so, reveals the ghost ocean liner and the town's hidden fears. In the port town of Havana, Santiago is one of the most unlucky fisherman. His experiences described in The Old Man and the Sea by Ernest Hemingway show his passion towards his lifestyle as a fisherman and his motivation to bring in a catch, no matter the size. At the start of the novel he has gone eighty-four days without catching a fish and is in a severe state of poverty becaus

Providing Universal Healthcare

The United States of America is the only country in the world that neglects its obligation to secure universal health coverage for its citizens. Approximately thirty nine million Americans lack health insurance. There are four different healthcare proposals currently waiting to be approved by the United States congress, all of which will only furnish a circumscribed amount of benefits and services. Unfortunately, a universal health plan will create a bureaucratic health system, taking control and pliability away from its citizens, causing long waiting lists for surgeries and procedures, as it is with other countries with a universal healthcare system. The push for universal coverage is based on the appealing premise that everyone should have access to the best health care possible whenever they need it. The big question is, who will provide this coverage? The government? Insurance companies? Or consumers themselves? All Americans should have access to healthcare regardless of income,

Belief Systems in The Guardians

The beliefs and values people hold concerning the physical and social world are essential to self-definition and social interaction. Additionally, the traditions and norms perpetuated through families and societies are a major factor in formulating an individual's belief system, which will continuously be carried out throughout their life. However, these beliefs are slowly adopted over time through different means and consequently reflect upon the well-being and interpretations of individuals in everyday life. As a result, this essay will address the crucial development of one's beliefs on account of their personal experience, relationships with others and society, while relating to the main social theme of beliefs and values selected from the "The Guardians" by Andrew Pyper. Furthermore, the essay will establish this idea through credible research, readings and the novel itself. One could argue that personal experience plays an important role in the development of an indivi

Hemingway and Fitzgerald

Throughout literary history, critics have discussed the greatest authors of all time. C.S. Lewis, Edgar Allen Poe, and Harper Lee are noteworthy to mention but so are F. Scott Fitzgerald and Ernest Hemingway. Crowned as two of the most iconic American authors, Fitzgerald and Hemingway were rivals during the Roaring Twenties. Not only were they rivals, they were also friends and had the same circle of companions. Despite their rivalry in writing, they wrote about a similar theme: The American Dream. Both were extraordinary literary figures in American history, but who made the biggest impact? Even though Hemingway deserves to be noted as a man who opened critics' eyes to new ways of writing while incorporating his unique writing style and personal adventures into each of his stories, the work of Fitzgerald will never be forgotten. Every time one of his novels is re-examined there is more depth and beauty in them than there was at first glance. Fitzgerald's accomplishments will reign fo

Defining Courage - To Kill a Mockingbird

Courage is something that we all admire but it is really hard to define. "True courage is being afraid, and going ahead and doing your job anyhow, that's what courage is." this was said by Norman Schwarzkoph (U.S. Army general). In Harper Lee novel of To Kill A Mockingbird courage was portrayed in many characters. In the book, the characters that showed the most courage are Atticus, Jem, and Calpurnia. Atticus was one of the characters that showed many acts of courage throughout the book. The best act of courage that was shown by Atticus was when he was defending Tom Robinson who is a coloured man. Despite having his kids being told unpleasant things about their father like "nigger-lover" (Lee 110) or other racial names, Atticus still manages to explain to them what is happening by telling them "I'm simply defending a Negro-his name's Tom Robinson." (100). Atticus shows courage in defending the coloured man because he knows he is not going to win the cour

School and Cyberbullying

In the 21st century, adolescents have to deal with something that was never a problem before. Cyber bullying is something that has recently arisen and recently become a big issue. According to Google.com, cyber bullying can be defined as "the use of electronic communication to bully a person, typically by sending messages of an intimidating or threatening nature." Today's public schools are having difficulties deciding whether or not the punishment of cyber bullying should be the Department Of Education's responsibility. Although most cyber bullying cases do not happen during school hours, the reality is that cyber bullying affects a school's functionality by distracting students and disturbing their learning. According to the supreme court cases of Tinker V. Des Moines and Morse V. Fredrick, schools are allowed to determine the appropriateness of speech and the students' freedom of speech cannot infringe on the rights of other students' and cannot disrupt the daily operations of a school. In Landmark Cases of the Supreme Court of the Unite

Religion, Gender and Sexuality

All world religions have dedicated substantial thought and consideration towards regulating a body of morals and norms, particularly regarding sexuality and gender roles. Christianity, and principally, the Catholic denomination, advocates the delegation of roles to both genders while confirming equality. This essay will explore the Catholic perception of gender and sexuality whilst outlining any changes in the interpretation of the Holy Bible so as to adhere to social values over time as well as addressing conflicts that have risen within this community. As stated in the New Living Translation Bible: "God created human beings in his own image. In the image of God he created them; male and female he created them." (Genesis 1:27) This alludes to the difference between men and women from the rest of the created life forms as unique and distinctive, and assigns both males and females a certain kind of dignity and value that is not given to God's other creations. Napoleon and King Louis

The Way of Napoleon, or King Louis? Napoleon Bonaparte was the key leader to help execute the domestic reforms the revolution had come up with during their reign of revenge on the king. He did this during the time of when he ruled the french in his empire,1799-1815. Napoleon took the ideas of the French Revolution and made them into domestic reforms, that both upheld and undermined the Revolution. This consists of educational and religious reforms that upheld, while political and civil libertie reforms undermined the Revolution. One way the goals of the revolution were upheld, was by Napoleon's educational reform, which allowed education for everyone. "Only the privileged went to school, which were run by The Church. Pupils were taught respect for elders and religion."(Miss Lavelle) Back during the reign of the king, Louis XVI, this is what he felt was right and that others part of the estate system should not be granted the privilege to have an education. The Revolution

The Sports Agent Industry

For my final capstone project, I have decided to pursue and research the sports agent industry and find out who the top agents and agencies are for professional athletes. Sports Agents are the backbone for any professional athlete looking to make it big not only on the field but also in the financial realm. They often work long hours trying to negotiate contracts with teams and GM's so that their client can get the possible deal. You may have a good grasp of the day to day duties of a sports agent if you have watched Jerry McGuire and how stressful the job can be for both the agent and the athlete. In this research I have looked at the past on how sports agents first became a factor, then I looked at the present day, and finally conclude with the future and what to expect for sports agents as they continue to represent clients. Some of the research also entails the top agents and agencies that exist and why they are so successful at representing the top athletes around the world. Whe

Saying No to the Death Penalty

The death penalty has been used as punishment in the U.S. for centuries. Opinions differ greatly and have become a controversial topic for debate over the years. Retribution, a moral obligation to society and the removal of those who are a threat to society are the goals capital punishment is said to achieve. This paper examines the pros and cons of the capital punishment and illustrates that taking a life does not bring closure or justice to anyone involved. Laws, crime, and punishment have always been and always will be integral parts of our society. The definition of each of them however seems to constantly be changing. For example, stealing a horse a few hundred years ago would constitute the person paying with his life while an entire town witnessed him being hanged for his crime. This may seem ludicrous and hard to believe but unfortunately it is not. The government determines what the laws are, what is considered a crime and most importantly what punishment a person should endu

Limitations and Directions of Criminal Justice

1. Introduction As the title of this chapter suggests, the discussion here will approach our experimental findings from three different perspectives. First we consider the implications of our work for L2 instruction and materials design. Then we discuss problems in the research and how they can be addressed. Finally, we propose a plan for investigating important questions raised by our experiments. In brief, the chapter explores the following questions: How can we use our findings to make teaching and learning more effective? How can our experimental model be improved? How can we use the model in future investigations? We turn to the first of these questions in the next section which begins with a review of the thesis findings. 2. How can we use results to make teaching and learning more effective? 2.1 Recapitulating the findings The thesis set out to demonstrate what had seemed initially to be a simple truth: Extensive reading is good for L2 vocabulary development because you will

Fascism - Political Totalitarian Movement

Fascism as a political totalitarian movement of the right was born in Italy in 1919 with the name Fasci Italiani di Combattimento, meaning Italian Fasces of Fighting and by 1923 the Fascist movement came to power after the so-called 'March to Rome'1 and very soon after, under the dictatorial government of Benito Mussolini took complete control of society.2 In these years, the passion for nationalism on which the Fascist ideology was based found breeding sites everywhere in the world where the wounds of the Great War were still open. Most importantly though developing side by side with the model of Italian Fascism was the much more incisive and ruthless model of German National Socialism, led by Adolf Hitler. For both Hitler and Mussolini sport would have a huge amount of importance for their ideologies and their Fascist societies, so much so that sporting events would become true liturgies because actually what was being paid attention to above all was the image that was being po

Puritans and Crèvecoeur's American Dream

The term "American Dream" first emerged in Hector St. John de Crèvecoeur's Letters from an American Farmer. In this book, first published in 1782, he referred to opportunities all immigrants had, and how fulfilling life could be in eighteenth century America thanks to the "fair laws" of a new world built on benefitting the common man. Since then, the term has been used to identify an ideal American tradition. However, even before Crèvecoeur originated the idea, the first immigrants to the New World already had a dream of their own. Seventeenth century Puritans' objective and hope were to form a society devoted to God. However, over the years, early Puritans' wish to establish a Christian utopia in a pristine New World morphed into Crèvecoeur's more self-centered view of a new country built on "fair laws" and commercial success. During the 1500s, people who attempted to purify the Church of England from "within" were give

Avoiding the Unavoidable - WWII

World War II was the first global war the world had ever witnessed. This war killed more people, involved the most nations and cost countries millions of dollars. The war started in 1939 when Germany invaded Poland. The Second World War was fought between the Axis Powers and the Allied Powers. The United States remained neutral during the majority of the war, until they were forced into war by Japan bombing Pearl Harbor. After the war, many countries experiences economic hardships and there was an atmosphere of international distrust. Even though World War II might have begun anyway because many countries' were resentful and were in economic depressions, the war could have been prevented if the Treaty of Versailles resolved the proper issues, the economic sanctions imposed on Germany were not so harsh and if the League of Nations acted as a true collective security and peace-keeping body. The Treaty of Versailles was formed at the Peace of Paris it specifically deals with Germany and

Corporate Agriculture and Modern Times

This is a growing concern in North American agricultural crops. Corporate agriculture endangers public health and consumers of these products because they involve the use of pesticides; they add growth promoters and antibacterial promoters to animal feed; and major health concerns tend to be ignored by health organizations like the FDA. There has been many research done upon this topic and many have concluded that the extent to which we use these to make "bigger and better" food has driven us to grow our own poison. Exposures to pesticides can be very dangerous and can result in concerns and major health risks. Studies have shown that farmers constantly exposed to pesticides have an increased risk of Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, ovarian cancer and other cancers, depression and respiratory problems (Consumers Report, 2015). Even though these farmers are constantly exposed, consumers are also vulnerable to these pesticides while purchasing items such as produce. W

Kearny's March: The Epic Creation of the American West

"Kearny's March: The Epic Creation of the American West," by Winston Groom tells the adventurous times of the westward expansion through 1846-47's Manifest Destiny. June 1846, General Stephen Watts Kearny, along with his two thousand soldiers, began their epic journey from Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, towards California. During their journey, America was heavily involved in territorial expansion. President Polk had been threatening England over the borders in Oregon, while at the same time, Congress had just voted to annex Texas from Mexico. Once the U.S. annexed Texas, Mexico declared war on the United States, and Kearny's Army was sent out with the orders to occupy Mexican territories. After a year of Kearny's expedition, the United States had doubled in size, finally stretching from the Atlantic to the Pacific, fulfilling Manifest Destiny's "from sea to shining see." While fulfilling America's "destiny", the newly acquired territories caused many disputes, which ultimately contributed to setting the stag

Character Analysis - Antigone and Haemon

Sophocles' Antigone explores the characters of Antigone and Haemon as rebels. They both rebel against Kreon, who is a greater power, but in distinctly different ways. Antigone stays steadfast to her beliefs as she defies the king of Thebes, while Haemon challenges his own father's inflexibility and stubbornness. Furthermore, Kreon's views on rebellion enable a greater understanding of how Antigone and Haemon can be considered rebels and though both characters defend their positions admirably, they are inevitably punished for their rebellious conduct. Antigone and Haemon find the strength to rebel against an unwavering powerful figure of authority, and though their deaths are tragic, they serve to teach Kreon the pitfalls of rigidity and arrogance. Antigone and Haemon can be considered rebels as they rebel against a greater power, in this case, Kreon. Antigone rebels against her uncle, the king of Thebes, when she fights to allow a proper burial of her brother, Polynices. Kreon has c
