Government and Leadership

Every member of society has a different interpretation of what they believe should be carried out by a good government. Some may want the right to own automatic weaponry, while others simply want sidewalks to walk on and roads to drive on. Good governance stretches far past the basics and exhibits more complex characteristics such as making sure that corruption is minimized and taking into account every voice in the decision making process. Over the years, many different governments have come into play, each one with the purpose of carrying out a system that is in the best interest for the citizens. With each government comes a leader, whose goal is to create an ideal government that suffices everyone's needs. Jean Jacques Rousseau, Lao-Tzu and Thomas Jefferson were three leaders, who, through their works, outlined their interpretations of good governance. Each one possessed unique qualities, which directly influenced their ways of ruling, and some of their approaches to governance are

Short Story - Chinese New Year

Ming trudged through the snow in her ratty brown cloth shoes. She could barely feel her feet because water had seeped through the thin cloth and numbed her toes. All around her, fiery red lanterns hung from windows and large sheets of red paper boasting Chinese poems were plastered on doors. Today was the Lunar New Year, the most important day for the Chinese. Everybody would celebrate late into the night all the while singing traditional songs and eating delicious cuisine. Firecrackers would go off, and men would parade around dressed up in dragon and lion costumes. The Lunar New Year welcomed spring, families would perform thousand-year-old rituals that promised good fortune and prosperity. Everyone would be in the best of moods. Everyone, except for Ming. Two months ago, Ming's father had been involved in a farming accident. The accident left him with another interesting story to tell, but one less arm. He had been fired from his farm job immediately, and no other farm was willing to hire a crippled man. Up to then, the main source of family income came from Ming's father, but now her mother had to support the family by selling

Democracy in 1920's Japan

In 1920, the country of Japan was beginning to show outward signs that it was embarking on a path towards political modernization and a model of relatively liberal democracy. Indeed, the previous decade had seen the nation's masses call for a 'constitutional government' and, by the beginning of the 1920's, elected politicians had come in from the peripheries to wield considerable, actual power. Rapid industrialization developed both a moneyed bourgeoisie and an urban proletariat, and trade unions and political organizations had begun to spring up at a greatly accelerated pace. The prime minister at the turn of the decade, Hara Takashi, was the first commoner to hold the position in Japan's history. Education had been universalized, and social mobility seemed to be on the increase. The Bolshevik revolution in Russia in 1917 and the Rice Riots of 1918 energized radical thought, and there were movements calling for universal male suffrage1, the social, economic and political liberation o

Abjection in Women in Love

The abject is an extremely strong feeling which is at once somatic and symbolic, and which is above all a revolt of the person against an external menace from which one wants to keep oneself at a distance, but of which one has the impression that it is not only an external menace but that it may menace us from inside. So it is a desire for separation, for becoming autonomous, and also the feeling of an impossibility of doing so-whence the element of crisis which the notion of abjection carries with it. Taken to its logical consequences, it is an impossible assemblage of elements, with a connotation of a fragile limit, (Kristeva in a 1980 interview, qtd. in Weiss 93). Julia Kristeva's description of the abject is a good frame for, "Women in Love," because nausea--the most evident reaction to the abject--permeates the novel. Social historians would call it wartime malaise, feminists would call it the horrors of patriarchy, but psychoanalysts might identify it as abjection, a repulsion

Hemingway Hero - Old Man and the Sea

Santiago's ability to stretch his abilities to great lengths allow him to be a Hemingway hero. The novel frequently mentions the physical pain Santiago suffers due to his old age. His joints, back, and hands ache from constantly holding the fishing line for days on end. He also suffers mentally from the solitude and isolation on his boat; he begins to speak his thoughts aloud. However, he does not lose his integrity or dignity. This pain allows him to fully focus on capturing the fish Santiago knows that he must stay clear headed and knows from the get go that he will kill the fish.Unlike ordinary fishers, Santiago risks his life by following the marlin so far from the coast. This commitment also shows his ability endure great danger, even with the chance of failure. Again, he is mentally strong and sound in his decision that he must kill the fish he loves. The man also displays heroism, obviously, by harpooning the fish. Yet, this heroism extends when he accepts the consequences that come with killing the fish. Santiago realizes that the dead fish will attract ravenous sharks a

Canada's Road to Independence

"Independence is a condition of a nation, country, or state in which its residents and population, or some portion thereof, exercise self-government, and usually sovereignty, over the territory" (Wikipedia, 2014, 1). During the years between 1914 and 1939, different Canadian events represented all of the things that make a nation independent. There were mainly five out of many things that contributed to Canada being an independent nation during these years, which include The Battle of Vimy Ridge, The Chanak Affair, The King-Byng Affair, The Balfour Report and The Statute of Westminster. These events are mostly arguing how Canada was an independent nation from a political and military perspective. The Battle of Vimy Ridge was a battle that took place in France against the Germans. The Canadian troops were entrusted with completing the mission of taking back Vimy Ridge in April 1917. Some considered this battle the turning point of World War I. Vimy Ridge was a chance for Cana

Outcomes of the British Industrial Revolution

The Industrial Revolution began in Great Britain in the late 1700s. Throughout the 19th century, the industrial production increased tremendously, and brought wealth and power to Great Britain. In the effects of the Industrial Revolution, there are positive and negative effects and also there are many topics divided for both positive and negative effects. For topics there are working conditions and wages, child labor, changing role of women, conditions in the coal mines, urbanization, changing class structure and industrial production. One of the first positive effects was changing class structure. The reason why class structure is positive is because people started making more money. People started to make more money because they got a law that forced the factory owners to pay a minimum wage. Other than that, middle classes started to appear which also got rid of aristocracy. Better laws for the factory owners and getting rid of aristocracy led to a better life for everyone. The second effect was the conditions in the coal mines. More worker

The Great Creation Debate

Creationism is one of the most debated topics. What makes it so interesting is that everyone has their opinion, but nobody actually knows the truth. Creation is just a part of the story in the Bible, that some people believe in. People can believe in whatever they want, but there will always be others to counter one's beliefs with their own. King shows a great perspective through his words and although Momaday tells his side a little differently, I believe they both share a similar view. King answers the question, "If the earth was on the back of a turtle, what was below the turtle? Another turtle. And below that turtle? Another turtle. And below that? Another turtle. So how many turtles are there? No one knows for sure, but it's turtles all the way down," (King The Truth about Stories 1). I believe King is referring the turtles to creation with this explanation. King is saying that creation is never ending and we will never really know where it all began. Momaday explains the qu

Play Summary - Macbeth

Scotland is at war in the opening scene, and two of Scotland's generals, Macbeth and Banquo, are returning from a successful battle. They are intercepted by three hags who tell the generals about a prophesy. The witches claim that Macbeth will become Thane of Cawdor and then King of Scotland. They also claim that though Banquo will never become a king himself, he will father a long line of kings. Both generals are initially skeptical of these claims, until a few moments later when Macbeth is appointed Thane of Cawdor after the current Thane betrayed Scotland. Macbeth begins to believe in the predictions made by the three witches, and he writes to his wife, Lady Macbeth. Upon Macbeth's return, his wife is waiting t

Mr. Chips as a Moral Character

A very enjoyable and worthwhile read is Goodbye, Mr. Chips, by James Hilton. The protagonist, Mr. Chipping, is a teacher at Brookfield, who is affectionately known to all of the students and faculty as Mr. Chips. Through all of his years of teaching at Brookfield, and eventually, as the Acting Headmaster, Mr. Chips proves himself to be a moral character. Mr. Chips is a humble person who does not think too much of himself and has a reasonable estimation of his own merits. Multiple times, Chips displays the virtue of generosity, which is a habit of giving liberally. He also is a character who is rich in kindness, the quality of being considerate and helpful. Because of his constant, consistent, and notable display of the virtues of humility, generosity, and kindness, Mr. Chips should be considered a moral character. Chips was a very humble person, as shown in many instances. When he first met his wife-to-be, Kathie, he was very honest about his own failings and shortcomings. He indica

Censorship and Development

Plato once said, "music is a moral law. It gives soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, and charm and gaiety to life and to everything".1 Plato was not mistaken when examining the importance of music and its effect on life. It is through the publication of the Republic that he expresses the viewpoints of Socrates and his thoughts on the influence of music to the world. This analysis will argue that music does not necessarily have a strong effect on human development, and subsequently, a state should not enforce censorship on its citizens. Plato's argument depicts no clear evidence of influential factors that music may have on individuals. Additionally, he and Aristotle voice many theories and ideas that contradict their views on musical censorship, which thus weakens their overall arguments. According to Plato, early childhood matters the most for moral development. Since children do not yet the posses reason, he believes music is necessary for

My Understanding of Politics

What does politics mean to me? At the beginning of this course I stated that defining politics as just a body of government is such a difficult task to do, because it is so much more than that. Before taking this course I despised anything that dealt with politics. I thought politics was a boring and an irrelevant topic, that is in my world of course. When I started to engage in the Discussion Board questions, it exercised my mind to view politics from a different perspective. At first I felt as though politics was something someone invented to be able to control people in society and that it was a way to control who becomes rich and who becomes poor, but now I have realize that there is more to politics than I thought. According to Merriam-Webster (2015), politics is defined as, activities that relate to influencing the actions and policies of a government or getting and keeping power in a government. Personally, I feel as though politics on a whole may seem as though it is the b

Literary Structure and Style of Mark Haddon

"The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time," by Mark Haddon, integrates unique elements of structure, language style and character narration to really deliver a rare, wonderful and one of a kind book that truly brings up thought provoking issues and is overall a satisfying read. Through the use of a "disabled" narrator, the author Mark Haddon creates intrigue and gives us rare insight into another, even alien like world! Not many narrators have Aspergers syndrome, so we are encouraged to see everyday day aspects of life in a newly diverse and refreshing light. For example the protagonist Christopher observed a sign that read "keep of the grass" but goes on to ridicule the statement by saying it should declare "keep of the grass around the sign" or "keep off all the grass in this park because there is a lot of grass you're allowed to walk on". I think the author includes this to imply that even thought Christopher is mentally challenged, h

Now I will do the best I can to make up for my mistakes and not put my life to a waste. I want to succeed in everything I do and I will accomplish that by choosing good friends that have the same goals as me, staying away from trouble, and just simply thinking of what can happen before I do something. As a sophomore in high school my goals are to take school seriously, choose friends wisely, make good decisions, practice hard in basketball, and have a gpa of 3.3 - 4.0. By taking school seriously I will make good grades. Making good grades isn't hard to do you just have to stay focused and do the best you can. In your first year in high school you have to be careful of who you hang around and who you make friends w

The Japanese Occupation in Singapore

The Japanese Government in Singapore used a combination of oppression and torture so as to instil fear and submission of the people of Singapore, so that the Japanese Government could exploit Singapore's economic and military resources to the maximum, as well as attempt to forcibly colonize Singapore so that she could be considered a Japanese colony so as to not only showcase Japan's political might, but also be a viable source of military support if need be in the case of war. As such, various inhumane means to minimize disruption and opposition were employed. They included the imprisonment of the Europeans in prison camps, forcing the Indian National Army, Gurkhas and Sikh soldiers to pledge loyalty to the Japanese, and either imprisoning or killing those who refused. Additionally, those who did not bow to the Japanese on the streets would be slapped, kicked or punished. The Japanese treated the Chinese as their enemies, and had kempeitai, or military police and informers, stationed all over the island, in which these informers could supply information t

Climate Change and Glaciers

Introduction Climate change is defined by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change as "a change of climate that is attributed directly or indirectly to human activity that alters the composition of the global atmosphere and that is in addition to natural climate variability observed over comparable time periods." Climate change is caused by the effects of greenhouse gases (carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide) produced mainly from the burning of coal, petrol and oil. These gases gather in the atmosphere, thickening it and consequently the sun's rays, which normally bounce back into space, are being trapped in our atmosphere causing the earth to heat up. This process is shown in figure 1. In New Zealand some impacts of climate change are higher temperatures over the whole of New Zealand but more in the North Island than the South, rising sea levels from the melting of large ice masses around the world, more frequent extreme weather events such as drough

Women and Captivity on the Barbary Coast

Many women were captured and enslaved by the Moors on their way to transatlantic destinations. Some of them were forced to work and endure the most horrible of tortures, whereas others were literally treated like queens and princesses. How they were treated did not always depend on their status in their home countries, nor on their beauty; in fact, there were no fixed criteria, which determined the fate of these women. There were some cases, in which women were released after a really short time, like for example Laurentia Whan, a woman captured on 30 July 1671 and released after only ten days or an English woman who was captured and brought to Algiers and was released shortly after because she was the niece of a consul in Venice, who could afford to pay a high ransom, due to her status (Matar 98). Other women like for example Mary Velnet were not that lucky, she had to suffer for seven years before the Italian consul paid the ransom to set her free. She had to work under hard conditi

Character Analysis - Lady Macbeth

Lady Macbeth is one of Shakespeare's most famous and frightening characters. In the beginning of the play, she is a stronger, more ambitious, and more ruthless person than her husband, Macbeth (sparknotes). She knows her strengths and ability to influence Macbeth, and she uses them when she can. Unlike many of the women of her time period, Lady Macbeth acts more dominant and masculine. The gender roles of her and Macbeth's relationship are switched by the power she holds over Macbeth. Macbeth implies she has a masculine sole in her female body. Her ambition and tendency for violence implies she has a masculine personality. Lady Macbeth is a strong female character, ambitious, and slightly insane. During the time period Shakespeare wrote Macbeth women were uneducated, forced to act submissively, and keep their opinions to themselves (Wilson's).Shakespeare has used several women with powerful roles in his plays. He gives them the power to move the plot along. The witches and Lady Macbeth hold this power. These female charac

Zimbabwe and Compulsory Chinese Lessons

The article "Zimbabwe Proposes Compulsory Chinese Lessons, Stirring Controversy," discusses how the government in power is going to make it mandatory to learn the Chinese language at every level of education including elementary in state-run schools. Although there are many people who think that this may be a great idea because it would create more job opportunities for future graduates, especially because Zimbabwe has had so many ties to the Chinese when it comes to doing business; there are still some who disagree with this new idea. The big issue comes down to whether the country has enough people to teach this new language especially when they are having a hard time finding teachers to teach in their own native language. The article goes on to describe that there is another issue that the people of Zimbabwe aren't

The Impact of Protestantism in America

Abstracts America was first an immigrate country, the ship named Mayflower loading with a group of puritans finally stood their feet at the new continent. From then on religion, especially protestant as the mainstream, laid the foundation of policy making and social morality. Key words: liberty, individualism, materialize Introduction At first sight glance, America is the most secular nation in the world. We are fascinated by its' booming economy, marvelous media industry and freedom. Whereas, the United Stated is one of the most religious country, unlike the countries in the Mideast, religion play a potential role in the American society. The doctrines of Protestant deeply influence the social life and government's policies as well. So in my paper, I'd like to point out that how protestant related to the American Creed and dream. Throughout the American history, there exist a special group of people who are the mainstream of the society. That kind of group called WASP (White, An

Significance of the Warrior Pharaoh Image

Ancient History sample essay for "Assess the significance of the Warrior Pharaoh image during this period." The "Warrior Pharaoh" image was extremely significant during this period because the New Kingdom was founded on military conquest and thus a militaristic society was formed. However as the period progressed, and the empire was created, diplomacy began to be employed to maintain the empire. However, official inscriptions continue to stress military achieved and all acts of diplomacy and trade are represented as tribute. The "Warrior Pharaoh" image was also inextricably intertwined with the Amun-Re cult and therefore, used to create a nationalistic support base in Egyptian society. The humiliation borne by Egyptians after Hyksos domination saw them unite under Seqenenre Tao I and II and fight against Hyksos rule. This is seen through the mummy of Seqenenre Tao II, with mace wounds to his head. Kamose also conducted military campaigns to expel the H

Movie Summary - Life is Beautiful

Life is Beautiful is an Italian film directed by Roberto Bengini. A sense of triumph is developed in three different scenes using visual and verbal techniques of color, costume, camera angles and shots and sound. The director has used the scenes of Dora boarding the train, Guido and Giouse giving a message to Dora on the loudspeaker and Guise winning the tank for the development of a sense of triumph. The director's purpose in developing this sense of triumph is to convey the idea that even during the darkest period of human experience, courage and resilience of human spirit can overcome the insurmountable odds. Firstly, Roberto Bengini uses the verbal technique of sound to achieve a sense of triumph when Dora boards the train. The director uses diegetic sound of the train hooting and Dora's heels clicking when she walks towards the train. Dora's fast clicking heels and the train hooting in the background invoke a feeling of panic, suspense and ambiguity for the audience because they

Media and the Objectification of Women

As I patiently waited to be serviced at a salon, there were two young girls flipping through a magazine admiring and imitating the models that were in various ads. The girls were looking at one ad, which portrayed a woman being pinned to the wall by a man that made them say "I want to be just like her", "wow she is gorgeous," because she was wearing clothes by a popular designer that appeal to their way of thinking. Images like the one described of women being objectified sexually are influencing young girls and making harsh stereotypical judgments about women. Women are strong people who make the world revolve, but how can women show their strength when they are constantly being objectified through media and advertisement. Are there any positive roles of women in the media? Yes there are positive images but they are not being portrayed in modern day media or they are only used in small ads and in certain types of magazines. Advertisement of the 21st century tend to
