Cyclosis of an Elodea Leaf

Abstract Plant cells contain organelles called chloroplasts which are responsible for photosynthesis in plants, the movement they create around the plants cells is defined as cyclosis (cytoplasmic streaming). We examined this movement in plant cells to determine if the intensity of light has an effect on the rate of cyclosis. To do this, we had torn a part of an Elodea leaf, with a drop of water followed by it on a slide to observe the chloroplasts movement around the cell walls with the aid of a microscope. Secondly, we timed the chloroplasts movement around the cell walls at different amount of light intensity. As a result, during this chloroplasts reacted differently with the amount of light that they were observed through. We encountered that as the amount of light intensity increases the rate of cyclosis decreased as well, and therefore having an effect on the leaves ability for photosynthesis Formulate alternative hypothesis. 1. Yes, an increase in light intensity causes an increase in the rate of cyclosis.

Two Historical and Political Documents

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances (1st Amendment of the US Constitution)." The opening to the Constitution starts with the fear of religion influencing the rule of the nation. But, is fear of religion the single most important reason for keeping a country intact? The Declaration of Independence, by contrast, took a stand against the corruptive rule of Great Britain. So, why didn't the Constitution follow that inspiration? Is this why corruption has had its way of influencing our elections, our business transactions, and our revered leaders? The consequences were endless, and will continue to be endless. Look at the contemporary world. The Lehman Brothers, Watergate, Bernie Madoff are just a few of the most notable corruption cases in rece

My Experiences as a Writer

As readers and writers, we all start out with a certain affinity to various styles of reading and writing depending on what is presented to us at an early age. Luckily for me, I was fortunate enough to even learn to read and write as a child, seeing as how many adults around the world still do not have that luxury today. Nonetheless, when I was a young girl, my parents provided me with my first picture storybooks and journals, which I believe shaped my love for creative writing. Through imaginative styles like journaling, poem reading and blogging, this is where my reading and writing strengths developed and showed prominence throughout my life. My very first experiences with writing began with three words: "the new kid". When I was five or six years old, my family and I moved from Saint Louis, Missouri to Leawood, Kansas just before I was about to start Kindergarten. I left behind some of my very first and dearest friends, my birth house and everything I had ever known f

Progressive Era - Reformer Success and Failure

The Progressive Era occurred in the United States from 1900 to 1920. Prior to this particular time period was the Gilded Age when presidents such as Grant, Hayes, and Tilden not only failed to take appropriate political action but also proved to be somewhat detrimental figures for their country. Conversely, in the Progressive Era, strong presidents Roosevelt and Wilson took charge in order to achieve their goals. Government powers and reform groups focused on widespread concerns that regarded social injustice and aided economic progress on local, state, and national levels. Reformers in this era detected the harmful effects of the industrial revolution and sought to resolve controversy regarding women's rights, child labor, monopolies, and other important issues of the time. In order for reformers to gain support and inform the public of the brutality of industrial life they used books, detailed magazine articles, pictures, and exploiting statistics. This era was mostly prominent in ur

The Struggle to Become the New Soviet Citizen

In the early 20th century, the Soviet Union began to experience a sweeping proletarian revolution, as well as rapid industrialization. This transition began reshaping the preceding social structure and firmly held beliefs of Russian culture as communism began to take root. Along with a transformation of Russian civilization came the remodeling of the Russian citizen, a new archetype with particular qualities that became idealized for all Soviet citizens. Leon Trotsky claimed, "Man will make it his purpose to master his own feelings, to raise his instincts to the height of consciousto create a higher social biologic type a superman." The New Soviet citizen upheld a Nietzschean-like disposition while enthusiastically supporting the spread of the socialist revolution. However, the formation of the "New Soviet" figure was not simple ideology. There is a history associated with flesh-and-bone individuals trying to rise to this new standard, and there was a real struggle

Richard E. Miller - The Dark Night of the Soul

What does the world say about people's soul? The Dark Night of the Soul gives an abundance of the many different citizens brought into this society. How there are people born into wealth with both parents in the home and turn out corrupt therefore there is no way possible to raise the perfect child. These children grow up and start to create their own beliefs like the two students of Columbine High School, Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris who brought weapons to school and killed fifteen innocent people. Miller exemplifies how humiliation can drown the soul. In comparison to Richard Tull and Gwyn Barry, they were college roommates one the very intelligent writer and the other a more relaxed nonchalant writer. The Information by Martin Amis zooms in on these men life at war of who's the better writer. According to society, they got older and switched roles, now Gwyn is the brilliant author having a bestseller to go along with his beautiful marriage and Tull is the bitter one of the two, a

Methods of Preventing Poverty

Poverty is the lack of money, need or scarcity. Poverty in the United States is a well-known thing. Poverty is all throughout United States and is getting worse every single year. In the United States, 35 states alone have a ten percent or higher rate of poverty. With the amount of poverty in the United States there has to be something the nation can do to prevent it, right? Wrong. There is no possible way to completely prevent poverty in the United States. With the United States reaching higher poverty levels by the year, there have been many efforts to prevent poverty. Most of these efforts however, have failed. For example, approximately fifty years ago Lyndon B. Johnson launched the "war on poverty' which has essentially done nothing at all (London 2). Although it did help some people, poverty rates in general have increased greatly. We used to be winning the "war on poverty" but now we are losing. With America going through the great depression then a recession, A

Religion and Polygamy

Polygamy is the practice or custom of having more than one wife or husband at the same time. This practice can be traced back thousands of years. This manner of marriage has been conducted by many of the ancient Israelites in Biblical times. It was not uncommon to have hundreds of wives. Monogamy, which is the practice of having only one wife at a time, was introduced when Paul was making many modifications to the idea of Christianity. Mormons or "Church of Jesus Christ of The Latter Day Saints", have permitted and practiced polygamy in the United States within the 17th Century. When offering reasons to justify the minorities act they bring up the accounts of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob Moses, David and Solomon in Biblical times. They believe that at times the Lord commanded men to have what they call "plural marriages", meaning they would have more than one wife. The founder of the Religion, Prophet Joseph Smith, also claimed to be ch

Unbiased Supervision in the Workplace

Introduction The workplace is quite dynamic and can be a very difficult place to manage because the workers are individuals from very different cultures. Besides this, workers are motivated by different factors in hopes to achieve the same goal – that of the company as envisioned in the company vision and mission statement. For instance, while one worker may be motivated by the need to earn a living and support his family, another may well be motivated by the need to succeed through learning from the work environment to start something of their own. These motivational factors give them a different outlook and consequently, the way they go about accomplishing their tasks. This may influence how they carry themselves in the work place and determine the various levels of supervision needed to guarantee productiveness according to the company policy. Supervision is a very important concept in leadership that enables the company to achieve its goals in a timely manner without necessa

The United Kingdom with the European Union

The United Kingdom's relations with the European Union have become more and more unstable throughout its membership. The EEC was created to ease tension between European countries following the second world war. Member countries would be able to trade with each other much more easily, facilitating free trade and creating friendships to avoid conflicts.(Europa) Later, the entity known as the EU was created to expand from purely economic affairs to political policy making for member countries. The problem comes when the EU starts acting like a federal government, barking 7orders at member countries like they're states in America. Britain's citizens are split almost down the middle over the issue of withdrawing from the EU, some say the EU is an oppressive, constricting organization that limits the UK's expansion. Other citizens are indifferent or feel that the EU has helped Britain to grow and wish to keep it that way. The three major issues Britain faces with the EU are economy, democra

Flipping the Classrom

The traditional approach to education, in which students gather in a classroom to learn new concepts from their instructors has been the vanilla form of learning for almost 1000 years. Logically, a system that old, was not created with the foresight to understand our societal needs today. With the integration of the internet, new forms of education can be more readily available as well as effective. A flip in the system, where instructors record lessons and post them to their respective websites, would allow students to watch these lessons, pause, rewind or fast forward as needed. The students would still be reporting to school, however, later and only to discuss what they've already learned and to work on more in depth matters as well as problems and worksheets that traditionally w

Technology and Chemical Engineering

"They combine the science of chemistry with the discipline of engineering in order to manufacture materials and products essential to society." This statement once said by a retired chemical engineer by the name of Henry Sullivan sums up what chemical engineers do. In Fact, without chemical engineers we wouldn't have safe air to breathe. "One of the oldest and well accepted myths, which is the greatest enemy of truth in my view, is that one simply cannot maintain the best quality of life without consuming hazardous, toxic, and depleting substances. This myth has been persistent but unrealistic. Today, Innovative Chemical Engineers and Brilliant Green Chemistry followers are defying this ancient myth of trade-off and quid pro quo - by appropriately designing their chemical reactions, and selecting non-hazardous alternative to otherwise toxic reagents. That's the way to go! We must think Gre

Online Piracy in Australia

Online Piracy The issue of 'online piracy' also well known as 'file sharing' of material copyrighted has captured much attention in recent years by Australians. Online piracy is a topic that has continual heated debates, which has attracted global attention. As harmless as online piracy seems to many, the act is unfortunately far from it. Major companies from not only Australia but around the world such as record, film, video game and software companies are severely impacted and continually suffering every day by lost profits of billions and billions of dollars. The profit loss of companies is unfortunately the result of direct online piracy. Countless individuals believe that file sharing and online piracy is completely and utterly wrong and unethical which acknowledges being no disparate than thieving and therefore should be illegal in Australia. A simplified definition of file sharing is distributing and making available flies by the worldwide Internet service. A numb

Suspect Community and Orientalism

Introduction "From Guantánamo to Pakistan: One Man Shares his Story" is an article documenting the story of Iqbal Madni (Ahmed, 2011). Madni is an Islamic scholar who was detained by the United States government in September of 2002. He was detained in Jakarta by Indonesian authorities. The violence he experienced was on account of his "race" because he matched the description of the suspect community, and not for any other legitimate reason. Madni was held in Guantánamo Bay, a black site, for over five years. Extraordinary rendition is the practice of secretly sending terrorist suspects to be interrogated in a country that has limited laws for the humane treatment of the convicts (Natalie and Joseph, 2012). Experiences such as rendering detainees led them to the loss of their legal rights, as black sites remove people from the protection of the law. In such practices, torture is highly valued in the structure of dehumanizing and demonizing. Many wi

Congress and Social Media - Minority Groups

In today's society, social media has become an important source of communication. As young college students, we use Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, and other social media applications every day on our phones or laptops. However, we may not think about the fact that 50+ year old congressmen and women are also using these same social media applications, and the fact is that some of them may use it more than young people do. Many of the people in Congress have learned to adapt to the ways of social media, and a large number of them use it to express their viewpoints on issues in the government. Some of them may use it more than others for particular reasons. They have also learned that social media is a good tactic when it comes to acquiring voters for elections. While gathering data for my Congress and Social Media Project the percentages given by the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) program have made it clear that there is a difference in the usage of social me

Expansion of the United States

The Mexican-American war determined the destiny of the United States of America; it determined if there was going to be expansion. The war started mainly because of the Manifest Destiny, Americans thought they had the divine right to extend their territory. The Mexican-American War started mainly because of the annexation of the Republic of Texas (established in 1836 after breaking away from Mexico). The United States and Mexico still had conflicts on what the borders of Texas were. The United States claimed that the Texas border with Mexico was the Rio Grande, but the Mexicans said that it was the Nueces River, so the land in between was disputed and claimed by both the United States and Mexico. Conflicts started on April 24th, 1846, 2000 Mexican cavalry crossed the Rio Grande and attacked American soldiers." Polk appeared before Congress on May 11 and declared that Mexico had invaded the United States and had ["SHED AMERICAN BLOOD ON AMERICAN SOIL!"]" (ushistory.org,1).

Themes of Fahrenheit 451 and Animal Farm

Should the government have absolute power? Should citizens blindly follow their leaders? George Orwell's Animal Farm and Ray Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451 convey the theme of "absolute power corrupts" by providing original plots, characters, allusions, and irony. The theme "absolute power corrupts" is portrayed in both Orwell's and Bradbury's plots. In Animal Farm, there is a cruel owner of the Manor Farm named Mr. Jones. The plot begins when Major, an old boar in the farm, calls a meeting about his dream. He tells the other animals of a vision he saw, a time where animals ruled humans. After Major dies, the animals are prepared to finish what he started. Three animals, Napoleon, Snowball, and Squealer, create a system called Animalism, which is an elaborate system of Major's teachings. Jones is run off of the farm when he does not feed the animals. The animals now have control of the farm and they rename it Animal Farm. After a successful take over of the farm, the pi

Texting and Driving - It Can Wait

In 2010, 81% of the US population admitted to texting while driving (Edgin 2014). 48% of teens say they've been in the car while the driver was texting (Suffran 2014). This statistic is extremely dangerous. Not only is it dangerous to the driver and passenger of the car, but to all other drivers on the road. Countless lives have been taken because of someone else's poor decision to text behind the wheel. "In 2008, nearly 800,000 Americans admitted to texting while they were driving" (Suffran 2014). " 6,000 of them died" (Suffran 2014). We are all guilty of getting distracted behind the wheel. That one text message you are just dying to read, it will only take a few seconds you swear. But, those few second of taking your eyes off the road can change your life or someone else's life forever. "Reaching for a phone, dialing, texting and other uses of portable devices increased the risk of getting into a crash by three times" (VTTI 2009). Car wrecks resulting

A Commentary on Bleak House

Charles Dickens worked with many complicated ideas and it is shown in Bleak House in more than one instance. These opening paragraphs show just some of the subtlety in his work. He manages to set the scene as well as set in motion the ideas that will be explored within the novel. He describes London as a dirty, backwards place where it would not be a surprise to see a prehistoric creature prowling the streets - it is as muddy and unclean as if it were not the great city it is supposed to be. While it is dirty and muddy, this idea of uncleanliness extends further than the literal being dirty. It is an attack on the city, and Bleak House did very well in attacking London and what transpired within its walls in terms of government and social ideas. It shows something almost chaotic in the people 'slipping and sliding since the day broke (if they day ever broke)', and this chaos, again, shows what Dickens thought of the city. He talks of the London fog (or the London Particular) in

The Pathway to Corruption

How is it possible for corrupt individuals to maintain stability and govern? The crucial aspect of understanding corruption becomes the pivotal foundation for a government to both execute policies and to create a concrete path for the preservation of their state. Machiavelli insists, "For all political and religious movements, all republics and monarchies must have some good in them at the start"(p.190). That's indeed correct, time and time again have there been examples of individuals coming to power and after a short period of time drastically changing their framework and intentions( Iran 1979, Germany 1939, Iraq 2010, etc). Hannah Arendt would look at it from another perspective; individualism being the main force. Arendt insists, "It is indeed in the nature of laboring to bring men together in the form of a labor gang where any number of individuals labor together as though they were one, and in this sense togetherness may permeate laboring even more intimately than

The Four Pillars of Education

Education has always been the one of the most important things that defines a well developed country. it served as the foundation for the development of it's people's skills and talents that is essential especially in the growth of a nation. It is also one of the most important things that the people of a certain society should acquire for better functionality. Because of education, people can have their value to their society and are able to contribute through their specific skills. In education, to develop one's potentials, the learner must be able to deal with the four pillars of education: learning to know, learning to do, learning to live together and learning to be. In learning to know, students should be able to gain know learning things. This first pillar of education is where the learner will learn to develop his cognitive skills for him to acquire knowledge about things. This knowledge that the student will acquire will be his foundations in the future to come when the learner will have to use

Animal Farm - Characters and Political Messages

The story of Animal Farm written by George Orwell in 1945 is known to be more than a 'fairy tale' story. Its characters and scenes depicts the people and events of the Russian Revolution of 1917. "All animals are equal but some animals are more equal than others" (Chapter 10, page 112). This show the struggle of the animals against oppression and tyranny of the group of pigs in the farm. In the start of the story, the oppressor is Farmer Jones, which is the equivalent of Tsar Nicholas Alexandrovich Romanov of Russia (Nicolas II) in the real world. In the story, the animal cause a rebellion against Farmer Jones which is caused by his ignorance and mismanagement of the farm. This is similar to the cause of the Russian Revolution as Russia had lost the most amount of men during World War 1. The story tells us the abandonment of a leader to their people or in this case to their animals. Old Major represents Karl Marx who instigates the Communist manifesto. In the story, Ol

The Societal Birth Rights of Women

The Societal Birth Rights of Women We humans now in the 21st century have evolved into a world of adequate justice compared to previous decades and centuries. Although we have progressed from slavery to salaries, racism to law abiding acceptance, and women inferiority to women's suffrage, the discrimination of mankind is still present. The gender difference creates the discrimination among women in their solely given obligation as mothers and in their expected civil right goals. Most men show the priority of their career with their heavy dedication, long hours, and daily shifts only leaving the women no choice but to take over the caretaking roles at home. This has created a different conception of power of the feminist roles resulting in domestic inequality. In effect, women have followed up with the unfair perspective of lower career positions, goal expectations, and decrease in salaries. The economic inferiority of women has given them the incapability of achieving their potenti
