SAP - Corporate and Business Level Strategies

SAP owes much of its success to its corporate strategy. It used a horizontal integration strategy to earn so much of its money. R/1, one of the earliest forms of ERP (enterprise resource planning), is a software that SAP focused on using on multinational companies. This R/1 software was known to save these companies hundreds of millions, and even billions, of dollars; thus with them being able to gain the most profit from it, "they were willing to pay SAP a premium price for its product." (Jones, 2011) The development their of ERP's helped SAP in developing a global base of companies. Soon after, SAP wanted to focus on its development of the ERP software and consulting services for companies. Thus, SAP "formed a series of strategic alliances with major global consulting companies such as IBM, Accenture, and Cap Gemini to install its R/1 system in its growing base of global customers" (Jones, 2011) One if the business level strategies used by SAP is that of an outsourcing consulting strategy. Due to it being hard, and expensive, for the ERP to adapt information with SAP's software, the harder it had bec

Equality and the Emancipation Proclamation

Equality can be defined as when a specific society or isolated group has identical status in political and social respects; these three factors are most important when judging equality as they have the most impact upon people's lives. Langston Hughes boldly states that "African Americans' lives became significantly better because their lives were changed socially and politically, giving them more opportunities." I believe this to be a broad statement, only accurate when looking at the very end of the period; it is not correct when considering the immediate effects of the Emancipation proclamation or even up to the end of the 1960's. Fiehn, on the other hand, correctly states that "the principle of black protest had been established, although it took many years for laws to be changed;" he rightly identifies that it took a significant period of time before the lives of African Americans began to improve. I believe his view to be correct as, in contrast to Hughes, he d

Breast Cancer - Symptoms and Treatments

Breast Cancer is one of the most common types of cancer among women in the United States. It accounts for one out of the every three diagnosis in the United States. Breast cancer are said to be malignant lethal tumours which destroys the tissues of one or both breast cells. According to Remedy Health Media (2015) the first discovery of cancer of any sort was the case of breast cancer which was documented around 1600BC. However, an ancient text called Edwin Smith Papyrus found in 1860 in an Egyptian tomb portrayed eight cases of tumours of the breast. Therefore, the first doctors who attempted treating the disease wrote of the strange disease saying "There is no cure". A Female breast is made up of blood vessels and lymph vessels. The lymph vessels collect and move lymph fluid away from the breast and into small bean shaped masses of lymph tissues called lymph nodes. However, the breast consists of fat and fibrous connective tissues. Each breast has about fifteen to twenty

Children and Violent Media

While the impact of mass media can be very educational and positive, Parents should monitor what their kids watch and do, because it can lead to children becoming violent or showing aggressive behavior not only in school, but also at home., it takes away their ability to socialize positively, and it can be a major influence in behavioral growth and forming values. Growing up in today's world children are becoming more susceptible to what they see on television and in the media. The influence that television and the media has on most children is stronger than what is being taught by their parents. In today's society, programs such as Black Entertainment ( BET), Music Television (MTV), Cartoon Network, among others have replaced the quality time that was once an important staple in every American home. Children no longer spend time talking to their parents instead they look to social media and television for answers they should ask their parents. When a child watches television, they are mentally absorbing the information, ideas and the v

Literature Reaction Essay - 1984

In George Orwell's novel, "1984," it shows a world of deep government control. A world where thoughts can be perceived as treason and language is rewritten to prevent individualism; a world opposite of utopia, and dystopian world. A totalitarian government is in placed ruling the people by psychological manipulation, controlling "news" or information to the masses, surveillance, and even physical violence to maintain its power. The world that Winston Smith lives in, is a world where it has advance technology but is used to the government's best interest. Telescreens and hidden microphones are everywhere, including the homes of all citizens, which can never be turned off. The party uses this technology to monitor the members all the time. Technology is also used to help rewrite history and other information to keep the people from having any thoughts that are their own. This leads to another aspect of the world, where language is used for mind control. If you can control lang

Financial Difficulties for Professional Male Athletes

Professional male athletes in America tend to be idolized for their unique talent and their opportunities to make money. They are in the high income tax bracket and most of the time live lavishly. Typically the "shelf life" of any athlete is relatively short with an average of 3.5-5.6 active playing years. Also, the average salary for a professional male athlete is around 3.4 million dollars annually. Most people would be shocked to find out that more than half of every professional athlete in the United States declare bankruptcy after 5 years of retirement due to the lack of professional financial guidance and out of control spending. The executives of these organizations should provide resources to assist

Notes on Police Hiring Operations

Research at least 4 different police departments that are currently hiring or recruiting for police officers. Create a summary, putting the research you have completed in your own words, and within the context of the summary do the following: 1. Describe the process used to recruit law-enforcement personnel. The process used to recruit law-enforcement personnel is a long process; it is not like applying for your average job at your local department store or even your local fast food restaurant. Of all educations you must have, the first must be a high school diploma or an equivalent such as a general education diploma. If you do not possess this then it would be worthless for you to apply to become a police officer as they will look over your application. There is also a written exam that is required and must be passed in order for you to become a police officer. There is no way you can bypass this test and there is not an acceptable reason as to why or how you can bypass an importan

Creating Personal Identities

In Leslie Bell's "Selections from Hard to Get: Twenty-Something Women and the Paradox of Sexual Freedom," she explores the concept of individual identity. She writes about a couple of individuals who are dealing with questions of control over the construction of their personal identity as they try to relate their personal desires to outside social forces. In Maggie Nelson's "Great to Watch" she writes about the connection between image flow and mediated images with the integration of human relationships. She talks about the issues of autonomy and control in her essay and provides solutions for them. Finally in Susan Faludi's "The Naked Citadel" she explores the cultural norms at the school which shapes their student experiences. She focuses on the young cadets being stripped off their identity and being molded into the Citadel's definition of masculinity. In today's world, every individual has their own beliefs and each person has their own personality. Th

Two Kinds by Amy Tan

Separated by age, upbringing and ambition, the two main characters in Amy Tan's short story "Two Kinds," struggle to find common ground between the two of them. Jing Mei's mother, a Chinese immigrant in America, puts her own personal gratification on the shoulders of her daughter. This is apparent when Jing Mei's mother, not exactly knowing what talents her daughter possesses, is convinced that Jing Mei can be a prodigy just because she's been born in America. However, as an American born child, Jing Mei does not want to live up to the expectations of her mother. The separation in ideals between Chinese immigrant mother and American daughter places extreme expectations on Jing Mei, which leads to character assassination, rebellion and emotional devastation between the two of them. As a result, this conflict destroys their mother-daughter relationship. One would think that by Jing Mei's mother losing her mother and father, a home, a husband, and twin baby girls (Tan 1) that t

Legalizing Physician Assisted Suicide (PAS)

In the United States one's choice to live according to their beliefs and choices are duly recognized and embraced, but terminally ill patients who wish to choose to die with dignity instead of a painful and prolonged death, oftentimes face enormous challenges to obtain life ending drugs. The right to die should be a matter of personal choice. Denying mentally capable individuals the right to end their lives in a peaceful manner is a denial of their self-determination of individual rights and freedom of choice and therefore physician assisted suicide should be legal in all States. Physician assisted suicide occurs when a physician provides a patient with the means to end his or her life, which is usually a prescription for a fatal dose of drugs. The patient chooses the environment where they would like to commit the act, without the doctor being present. Long ago, a patient's input in the medical treatment they received was minimal. Then in the 1900s, doctors in the United States bega

The Laws of Hammurabi's Code

If today's civilization was ran by Hammurabi's Code, society would be more inclined to follow the laws and rules set by the government due to the strict, straight forward, and fast acting polices of Hammurabi's Code. In today's society, people who commit a crime, and are convicted of the crime, are often times released of harsher punishments due to many factors such as the crime case not having enough evidence, or the suspect has a good lawyer. In Also, Hammurabi's Code puts a large emphasis on family; something that is not nearly as important in all of today's society as it was seem it was in the Sumerian civilization. Rules and laws are written out in plain terms, however, many times, crimes go unpunished, pleas are given out, or bails are set and paid; letting criminals go back into everyday life almost scot-free. In Sumerian civilization, there wasn't any judiciary system, judges or lawyers, only Hammurabi's Code. Hammurabi's Code had very few, if any, loop holes when one had

Sisters in The Burial and A Streetcar Named Desire

"The Burial at Thebes," by Seamus Heany, and, "A Streetcar Named Desire," by Tennessee Williams, both feature second tier women playing important roles, struggling against dominant male power. Although they do not wholeheartedly support their sisters' motives, Ismene's love for Antigone, and Stella's love for Blanche, is undeniable. However, Ismene grows and eventually supports Antigone, because she has no good reason to fail her, while Stella's resistance to Blanche makes sense, due to her habits. Ismene, although innocent, steps up and stands by Antigone, against the man she feared to disobey in the beginning of, "The Burial at Thebes," When Creon, their uncle and ruler of Thebes, declares Antigone's death penalty, he also brings in Ismene. He accuses her for helping her sister. Ismene, who played no part in Antigone's tasks says, "I helped her, yes, if I'm allowed to say so And now I stand with her to take what comes," (The Burial at Thebes, 34). What made Ismene change

Way of the Peaceful Warrior

The best way to teach a man a lesson is to relate it to a common idea or action. In the Karate Kid, for example, the master made the young boy do chores such as waxing a car, sweeping, catching a fly with chopsticks, and many other tasks. Even though persons hate dealing with tasks that do not relate to lessons, anecdotes are common among pupils learning because it also teaches discipline and patience within the student(s). In Dan Millman's autobiographical novel Way of the Peaceful War, Socrates, a guru of spiritual philosophies and practices, takes Dan, an aspiring gymnast looking to fill a void in his life, as his pupil and helps Dan find spiritual peace. Throughout his training, Dan learns that secular knowledge does not define one's existence because knowledge not only limits the mind but also does not allow "outside-the-box" thinking. Socrates' methods are similar to Buddhism and Taoism because students of these two philosophies learn by anecdotes, metaphors or ideas th

Procedures of Behavior Modification

The internet is a major part of the lives of most students. There are many uses, including finding resources, staying up to date in their field, chatting with other students, social media, and online gaming. It's no wonder that many students find that time has slipped by unnoticed while they were online. However, as we are reminded by Katelyn McKenna and John Barge in their article The Internet and Social Life "time is a limited commodity, so that the hours spent on the Internet must come at a cost to other activities." Students and parents of young children are two groups of people who have very little spare time, in general. When hours of internet usage are added, it becomes a question of 'what activities are not being done in order to make time well spent?' If one looks into the past at previous technologies, the television is probably the closest ancestor of the internet. When the TV was introduced in the 1950's there was a significant drop in community involvement

Othello - Deception, Despair and Failure

Iago, a main character in Othello is perceived as a very good and honest man. This image of Iago quickly changes when the hidden motives behind his honesty are revealed. Iago desperately wanted to be second in command; however, Cassio was chosen for the position. This filled Iago with jealousy. Iago had misleadingly warned Othello of the soul deteriorating emotion one calls jealousy; otherwise known as "The green eyed monster" (3. 3. 167). To fulfill his appetite for power, Iago followed through with a plan that directly lead to the tragedies that occur in Othello. On the surface, Othello is a romantic tragedy, however beneath that is a story about persuasion, greed, and jealousy in human nature. Iago's greed and jealousy truly gets the best of him. He stopped at nothing to earn the title of second in command. Clearly Iago has come in contact with the corruption that jealousy brings; therefore, he uses what he knows from experience to get what he wants. Almost every lie to

Population and Migration

Aryans The Indus civilization was one of the ancient civilizations that was located in today's time which is northwest India and Pakistan. It was on the fertile flood plain of the Indus River and its vicinity. The name "Indus civilization" was derived from the main river of that region "Indus". There were two particular cities that are well known at the time of Indus civilization. Mohenjo- Daro and Harappa. Mohenjo- Daro was located on the lower Indus and Harappa at the further upstream. Indus civilization sometimes is also known as Harappan civilization. This civilization lasted from about 3000- 2500 BC to about 1500 BC. These two cities had a population of about 35000 each. "These cities were far more advanced than their counterparts in prehistoric Egypt, Mesopotamia or anywhere else in Western Asia." (Ancient Indian history: The Indus Valley civilization (2500 BC – 1500 BC)). Harappan cities seemed to have almost the same structure as the cities

Martin Luther King Jr. - Speech Analysis

Martin Luther King Jr. remains to be one of the most important leaders in American history. He is prominently remembered as the leader of the Civil Rights movement in the 1950's and 1960's. The equality that exists among races in the United States today has a lot to do with him. He did not achieve that equality with his mere presence. He wrote powerful speeches and letters, and he spoke words of wisdom all along his journey. Two of his most famous pieces are the, "I Have a Dream," speech, and, "Letter from a Birmingham Jail." Although the speech and the letter were aimed at different audiences, both convey the same message. It was time for blacks and whites to come together, and live as one. Martin Luther King Jr. knew how to reach the audience he was addressing, through the use of different language tools. The, "I Have a Dream," speech is a very persuasive piece, for good reason. This speech was given to an estimated 250,000 people at the March on Washi

Restaurant Business and Marketing Strategy

Creating a marketing strategy for our business, helps with the sales, and reputation. Satisfying our targeted costumers is the main focus of our restaurant's marketing strategy. We want our costumers to know what we sell, what our values are, and how we are different from our competitors. By researching the demographics of Myrtle Beach, we were able to strategize a beneficial marketing plan for our products, prices, distribution, and promotion. Conducting a successful marketing strategy for our business will satisfy the tourists and locals of Myrtle Beach, and benefitting our profits in the process. After researching, we found that Myrtle Beach is a popular vacation area, and includes a large amount of retirees. Due to this, our target market consists of the locals and tourists in the Myrtle Beach area. We also found that the needs of our costumers must be met, and we will do this by making our restaurant convenient to them. For example, we are going to create an app for our customers to order food, and we will serve it to them as they sit on the beach. Our main focus on dem

Short Story - Scenes from the War

The gun fire is never ending; the battle has raged on for what seems like an eternity. I can't remember a time I was more scared. All I can do is hunker down below a small stone wall along Guntown Road. My heart is pounding so hard it is louder then the gun fire surrounding me. "Joe! Joe! Where are we? We have been marching forever. Iowa seems so far away." "We are inside Mississippi, somewhere north of Tupelo. Why?" "I just wanted to know where I was when I die." The bugle sounds charge. Here come the Rebs. As Smitty and I stood to fight, we hear the bugle again, retreat. Before we could turn around, our position was overtaken by the rebs. We battled valiantly for what seemed like hours when in reality it was only minutes. There was a break in the action, the rebs retreated. It was our chance to escape. Our horses were long gone, so our only way out was on foot. As we turned to run, we were overtaken by the rebs again. This time was worse. The numbers were overwhelming. One by one w

Autism in Modern Literature

"People believe in God because the world is very complicated and they think it is very unlikely that anything as complicated as a flying squirrel or the human eye or a brain could happen by chance. But they should think logically and if they thought logically they would see that they can only ask this question because it has already happened and they exist." Mark Haddon, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time 164 For decades, both media and literature have depicted autistic children with varying perspectives. Contrary to the innocence often portrayed through youth characters, Mark Haddon painted the main character of his award-winning novel The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time, Christopher Boone, as an autistic young adult faced with challenges in his life, including the discovery of the murder of his neighbor's dog. Haddon utilizes Christopher's autistic disability to his advantage, and tries to deliver a realistic take on autism through his literatu

Body Symbolosim in Titus Andronicus

Throughout Titus Andronicus, a play written by William Shakespeare, hands and tongues are reappearing topics that represent the action and speech of each character-hands representing action and tongues representing speech, respectively. Action and speech play vital roles when it comes to considering the concepts of gender and power and their relationship to the characters Titus, Lavinia, and Aaron. These characters in Titus Andronicus have an affect on the outcome of the play by using hands and tongues, and, therefore, Shakespeare shows how strong words and actions can be, even when used in remarkably different situations. Women play a significant role in, but not in the way that we want them to be played. Women are looked at as an object in Titus Andronicus, so when they do use their hands or tongue it does impact the reader. Shakespeare uses hands and action towards the beginning of the play. Lavinia kneels down to Titus saying, "O bless me here with thy victorious hand whose

All Shook Up: How Rock n' Roll Changed America

In Glen C. Altschuler's book, All Shook Up: How Rock n' Roll Changed America is a mesmerizing breakdown of the impact that rock n' roll music has had on American culture. From chapter to chapter he thoroughly conveys the social change that was initiated by the rise of rock n' roll in the 1950's. Through a political eye he first discusses the impact that rock n' roll had on society's view of race. Developed from a blend of Southern blues and gospel music with an added strong back beat, rock n' roll soon turned popular with teenagers who were trying to break out of the mainstream, conservative, American middle class mold. Noticing this trend African American's began to view rock n' roll music as a way to promote racial harmony and social mobility. Altschuler's provides many examples to describe the attempts that white elders made in order to reinforce white supremacy; for example, promoting white rock n' rollers such as Pat Boone, exploiting black rock n' rollers (Allen Freed), and thro

The Steps to Paradise

All the explorers who have reached their "promised land" have had guides whose impacts helped them reach their journey. Neil Armstrong had two other astronauts who accompanied him on his spacecraft. Along with these two directors, Neil Armstrong had approximately 100 scientists at NASA working as guides to help Apollo 8 land on the moon. There is a similar occurrence in John Wyndham's book The Chrysalids where David Strorm has many pilots to help him reach his "promised land". The most important people to guide David were Sophie; a friend of David's who is a deviation. Michael is one of the oldest chrysalids in their group and he is a guide for David. Petra Strorm, who is David's youngest sister and also a chrysalid. Lastly, the Sealand woman who happens to be a chrysalid from a distant place helps David reach his destination. These people may not know it but they are step ladders for David to reach his "promised land". Sophie is David's friend who happen
