Reaction Paper - The Psychology of Sleeping

Sleeping is the best thing that ever happened. I would like to know why do people and even mammals sleep. Probably this is the dumbest question that all people have asked and I got the same question too. What would happen if we do not sleep? Is there anything bad to our body and psychological that would happen? When I listen to the example of a cat sleeping, I just knew that the cat's brain release some noise. In fact, the cat that sleeps does not even have that kind of noise. Another example that I heard is when dolphins can sleep peacefully, but they are still swimming. What makes me interesting is to know that the half brain of the dolphins is sleeping or in rest mode, but the other half keeps the dolphins swimming while they are sleeping. In the middle of their conversation, I found out that they are using psychological psychology in their research. Firstly, let me explain why sleep is related to psychological psychology. Well, sleep is a behavior that is encased by the body comme

Depression and Bipolar Disorder

Most everyone has experienced some form of depression in their lives at one time or another. This period can be induced by stress, loneliness, or any one of several factors. It is when these feelings last for more than two consecutive weeks that this can become a major problem ("Depression," 2006). Another similarly crippling mental issue, is known as bipolar disorder. In generalized occurrence, this term refers to bouts of "mania" coinciding with simultaneous incidences of extreme depression (Greil, 1999). As with anything, correlation does not represent causation, meaning that just because these two psychological issues are in fact related, to a certain extent, depression is not necessarily the cause of bipolar disorder. My intent, through research and critical analysis, is to come to a realization and share a newfound understanding of exactly how these two problems correlate. Depression in and of itself, is not a contagious illness, however, it can run in famil

American Anti-Dumping Measures

In 2012, Vietnam filed a trade dispute with the World Trade Organization (WTO) against the United States due to anti-dumping penalties being enacted against frozen shrimp being exported from Vietnam to the United States. From the perspective of the United States, it is purely an issue of dumping and protecting domestic industry from unfair trade practices. However, Vietnam takes issue with how the United States calculates their dumping ratios because of a practice known as zeroing. Zeroing, they claim, is injurious to free trade and non compliant with current WTO trade regulations. Dumping, the practice of selling abroad at a price lower than the domestic price or cost of production, is often considered an unfair trade practice that is harmful to importing industries. Under WTO agreements, a country may enact punitive trade measures against a foreign country if they are able to show that the foreign country is dumping goods and that it is causing harm to domestic industry. There are

Lessons in The Scarlet Letter

In the novel "The Scarlet Letter," Nathaniel Hawthorne depicts the customs and cultures of the puritan society. He leads all of the readers in the curiosity of the sanctity and sanity of the story. Many people in the American school system have struggled with the question whether or not to ban the novel from being taught because of the context. What these people lack is the true understanding of what valuable lessons the novel really teaches. American schools systems should continue allowing The Scarlet Letter to be taught because of its teachings of the Puritan society, the effects of sin, and the spirit of Nathaniel Hawthorne. Any true educator can see how there are many elements that can be taught through The Scarlet Letter. The plot of the story revolves around the Puritan era which has so much rich history to be told about the society. This particular society is well known for the discipline and loyalty it has for religion (Source A). Puritans have a deep respect for the law of God and a hatred for those who break it, which is why they h

The Successful Student

Some people never learn effective study habits in high school. Thus, they may struggle through their first semester of college. Students have different ways to be successful and students should figure out on how they studies the best; many people cannot create a quality essay at four in the morning with the music playing and the television on; to put in a simple way, with loud noises. Although poor study habits may cause the student to struggle, which results in unhappiness, he can become connected by joining clubs, music groups, or sports that will help a person make more friends while balancing his life, thus making him a happier student. So, students should get involved. School does not have to be just about schoolwork. One should find an activity that his school offers, and he or she should join if his or her schedule allows. Yet, some people have a harder time adjusting to school than other people and may feel that success is impossible. However, a student can be successful in ma

Culture and Development in the Philippines

Janelle Anne D. Caylo SOCIO304 BSPsych-1 Reaction: Culture and Development in the Philippines Way back to the history of our country we can witness that our country is a truly a westernized country. Colonizers such as the Spain, colonize us for more than 300 years and the Americans for nearly 50 years. Yes, it is indeed that the colony of Spain and Americans had a great help to prosper our country; the Spain by its legacy of Christianity and Americans by introducing the modern educational system in the Philippines. But if we will understand it deeply we are plunder already by the Spain and Americans. Why? Because, since the colonizers contributed something in helping our country to arise. Filipinos can now be easily captive by them, in a way that the Filipino will only remember their good contribution, not the true rationale behind it.

The Issue of College Plagiarism

Plagiarism is a critical issue occurring in colleges nowadays. Many students think plagiarizing assignment gives them an advantage. However, there is no advantage of plagiarism for college students, but only serious consequences. Plagiarism can cause students to have bad effects such as problems in school, lack of intellectual growth, and problems in a future job. Many students do not understand what plagiarism is especially the college freshman. Shane Hall, eHow contributor, stated, "Plagiarism is an act of academic dishonesty in which a person takes the work or ideas of others and presents them as his own without proper credit or attribution" (2014, para.1). Some students have committed plagiarism because they are lack of research skill and lazy so they just copy other people work to complete their own work. According to RULE student Sao Mengheang, "I usually plagiarize document on my assignment not because I'm so lazy but because I'm really don't know how to research

Characteristics of Gender Roles

Today, and more prevalently in the past, gender stereotyping takes place in many aspects of everyday life, such as the media and normal social interactions. Gender roles assign specific requirements and expectations of each sex, for example, a popular gender role for women is that they tend to get emotional more so than men. It is clearly obvious that this is incorrect due to the inevitable diversity of the human race, yet many people truly believe that these expectations set in place for the men and women of the world help maintain a balanced social hierarchy. Society has become more receptive to changing these prehistoric ways of thinking with the help of feminism and activists who strongly believe in the social, political, and economic equality of the genders. The ignorance of people who believe that there are set requirements in order to belong to a certain gender is incomparably high, and these individuals need to understand how degrading roles can seem to others and h

It exposes the motivations, functions and the range of perceptions that other characters adopt pertaining to Caesar. The main motive that Caesar displays is the pursuit of power and glory. His function in the play is to lead the Roman people and leave behind an important legacy. The ways in which other characters in the play view Caesar vary and this highlights how all characters have personal agendas hence their opposing views. Power and glory are two things which Caesar aspires to achieve and maintain. Caesar's level of confidence suggests his drive for power and glory which is depicted via the confident tone in "But I fear him not" (III.I) and "for always I am Caesar"(III.I). In fact, aspirations for power and glory leads him to neglect and dismiss his fears and threats. Furthermore, imagery of men

Identity and Belonging

Book Summary - Montana 1948

The book "Montana 1948" shows us how people can be very dishonest and shows us that certain people will choose what they want to see and what they want to forget about. It shows us that trust is a powerful tool. Should you trust people though? If you lived in Montana the answer would be no. Frank, Wesley, Gloria, David and Julian Hayden are all examples of the trust issues that echoed through the small town of Montana in the summer of 1948. Frank Hayden, Brother of Wesley Hayden and uncle of 12 year old David Hayden, was known as a war hero, a high school and college athlete, and also very witty. During World War II he carried three soldiers to safety. Many saw him as a hero because of this, they saw him as the man they wanted their kids to be just like. After the war Frank worked as a doctor in Montana. It wasn't known by the public, but Frank raped many of his I

The BP Oil Spill and the Gulf of Mexico

BP stands for British Petroleum and is widely known for its oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico in April 2010. This spill is seen as one of the largest, man-made disasters in the history of the United States with 4.9 million barrels of oil spilling from the Deepwater Horizon caused from the oil rig exploding into the Gulf. The Deepwater Horizon oil spill effected humans and wildlife, the environment, and the economy in a negative manner, all of which could have easily been prevented by British Petroleum. According to science and environment reporter, Mark Kinver, the explosion of the Deepwater Horizon oil rig resulted in 17 workers being injured and 11 deaths. Three days were spent attempting to locate the dead worker's bodies, but they were never found. The exposure to the spilled oil caused many upper respiratory problems, rashes, and skin irritations for the members that worked the platform as well as those in the nearby area, (Kinver, 2011). Despite the injury to the workers, the oil

Reading Prufrock Through a Marxist Lense

T.S. Eliot is the name of a major poet in the English-speaking world of the twentieth century. He was a British American poet who was very influential. His masterpiece "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock" (1915) gained reputation for the exploration of new poetic rhythms, forms, and themes and captured enormous attention. His experimentation within language and forms brought a rapid change in literary tastes. His writings helped usher in a new era in poetry. Eliot is remarked as "not only a great sorcerer of words, but the very key keeper of the language" by Igor Stravinsky. The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock This poem is an inspection of the tortured inner self of a typical modern man who is overeducated, obsessed, anxious, fearful of the people in the society and emotionally stilted. The poem's speaker Prufrock, seems to be addressing his possible lover. But Prufrock is confused about how to approach that woman. He lacks self-confidence and feels insecured. He is worr

Edgar Allan Poe - The Philosophy of Composition

In Edgar Allan Poe's, The Philosophy of Composition, he breaks down what good composed works are. At first he explains how he writes in a step by step system meaning he gives a buildup for the story, instead of immediately getting to his point. Which is a good thing because then the story would be too short and to me rather boring instead of having an intellectual, hardworking sense behind it. Poe also talks about lengthy works saying that if a reader decides to stop reading a work in the middle to continue another day, that the reader is destroying the beauty intended by the author. He talks about stories and poems needing to be dynamic as well, meaning the works should leave an impression and have a certain tone. The works that I decided to attribute to this composition are, The Facts in the Case of M. Valdemar, The Black Cat, Eleonora, The Masque of the Red Death, The Raven in which Poe speaks of in his composition, and Alone. The Facts in the Case of M. Valdemar uses the step by

Different Perspectives of the Vietnam War

"Australians were supportive of Menzies Governments' decision to send troops to Vietnam in support of President Diem's Resistance of Ho Chi Ming. To what extent is this true?" The Vietnam War was fought to support our alliance with the US and in the effort to stop the spread of communism. The war lasted from 1965-1972 during this period changes and support of the war changed and became less throughout the years. Political groups, social and religious groups all shaped the public's support of the war. Views of Save Our Sons, the Catholic Church and Menzies Government will be focused on in the text. Menzies view on the Vietnam War was that at all costs it had to be fought by Australians and won, he greatly supported the war against communism that it was to neutralize the threat and to serve our alliance with the US under the ANZUS treaty. Australian citizens were influenced to believe this way of thinking as well. Menzies had a strong belief in the domino theory that would tak

All the stares and whispers, they get to me. Heidi though, she basks in all the attention she is given. The procedure's usually the same; Heidi becomes best friends with the whole school, while I fade as her shadow. We move around a l

Integrating CAS in Post-Secondary Education

We propose a discussion on preliminary results of a literature review pilot study regarding the use of CAS in post-secondary education. Several issues surrounding technology integration emerged from our review, and these are described in detail within the paper. The brief report on the type of analysis and the integration scope in curriculum suggest that the multi-dimensional theoretical framework proposed by Lagrange et al. (2003) needs to be adapted for our focus on systemic technology integration in post-secondary education. Keywords: CAS, university education, literature review, technology implementation issues Introduction A growing number of international studies have shown that Computer Algebra Systems (CAS-based) instruction has the potential to positively affect the teaching and learning of mathematics at various levels of the education system, even though this has not been widely realized in schools and institutions (Artigue, 2002; Lavicza, 2006; Pierce & Stacey, 2004). Multicultural Project Planning in Iraq

Multicultural Project Planning Pre-war and post-war has devastated the Iraq people and the country. According to Ghabra (2001), "No Arab people have been so traumatized by dictatorial rule, foreign adventurism, and war as the Iraqis under Saddam Husayn" (p. 39). The war in Iraq has relieved the Iraq people of Saddam, but the aftermath of the war has created harsher living conditions (Narrator, 2003). For example, there is no clean water for Iraq people to drink because the water will make them sick. During the Gulf War, a Coalition aircraft bombed Basra's power station cutting the power of Basra's waterworks, and the system has not been fully restored (Narrator, 2003). The country needs aid in rebuilding effort. To help aid the country's rebuilding effort Humanitarian's Organization will be expanding into Iraq. Multicultural project planning is the first step Humanitarian's Organization will have to take before expanding into Iraq. The Organization will examine the different cultures i

Deception and Injustice in King Lear

The power Shakespeare's King Lear stems from the tensions in its form and content. The play's complexities, highlighted through a profound investigation into the nature of life, have caused it to stand the test of time, still appealing to the contemporary responder. The fundamental tensions in the play, between moral rightness and equity, intent and action, is brilliantly dramatized through literary devices. King Lear explores the nature of life and human experiences which is filled with the tensions Shakespeare employs. These tensions resonate strongly with the audience because they correspond with different questions of human existence by addressing justice as a prevailing theme. The conclusion of the play serves to highlight that acts of deception have severe consequences as all injustices are resolved through poetic justice. Justice is the principle of moral rightness and equity; a human quality we are still trying to achieve in today's society. Shakespeare's play; King Lear portr

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC)

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) was set up by the regime of General Yakubu Gowon via decree 24 of 1973 and later modified by the regime of General Ibrahim Babangida through decree 51 of 1993 to inculcate in Nigeria youth the spirit of selfless service to the community and to promote of oneness and unity in a nation diverse cultures, economic and social background. The after effect of the Nigeria civil war which occurred between 1967 and 1970 had left in the people the spirit of distrust, mutual suspicion, bitterness and even the lack of belief in the oneness of the country. Therefore in order to put behind us the challenges of the civil war especially among the Nigeria youth, the NYSC was conceived as a tool to further realize the post civil war objective of a united, strong and self reliant nation, a dynamic economy, a land full of opportunities for all citizens and a free and democratic economy. The objective of the NYSC scheme was to instill a sense of discipline in her you

In Cold Blood - Law and Morality

Discuss how the book handles the relationship between law and morality with respect to the following: the death penalty; the insanity defense (M'Naghten vs. Durham rule); Perry's reckoning with organised religion. Is the law based on morality? Plato said that morality stems from Natural Law - this existed in prehistoric times and included unspoken agreements such as "I won't kill you, and you won't kill me," or "I'll help you, and you'll help me" and these concepts have evolved, as humans have. It seems that somebody, at one point in history, decided what is right and wrong, how people should behave. Laws enforce those expectations and rules based on what is right or wrong. Truman Capote investigates the relationship between law and morality in his non-fiction novel In Cold Blood using the death penalty, insanity plea and a reckoning with organised religion. Why do governments kill people to show other people that killing people is wrong? Humanity becomes associated with murderers w

Unorthodox Heroines and Jane Austen

"A woman," Caroline Bingley of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice affirms, "must have a thorough knowledge of music, singing, drawing, dancing and the modern languages."1 Her comment demonstrates the rigid view that members of the upper class had regarding the requirements a woman needed to be called "accomplished" (38). As well as these skills, a woman must possess a natural grace and flawless manner "to deserve the word" (39). Elizabeth Bennet's reply of "I never saw such a woman" highlights Austen's concern with the notion of the ideal woman within her nineteenth-century English context. Commonly regarded as a realist writer in her accurate portrayal of everyday, Regency era life, Austen was moreover "one of the great formative and founding influences on how we think about 'England' and 'Englishness,' as well as class, ideology and gender issues."2 Her novels raise central matters within her society, often challe
