Respect, Trust, and Listening

Differences shape what we know and who we are. If only a single perspective is shared amongst us life and society cannot be understood; we need many viewpoints to truly and clearly see the world. Most college classes are based on solely one particular subject, say if one takes Economics the only thing that is discussed is, Economics. In English 1102, specifically in Professor's Sweat's classroom, one of the most valuable real world lessons that students gained was dialogue. Dialogue is way more than a simple conversation that people have on regular basis. Dialogue requires listening, respect, and trust. Listening is a valuable aspect of dialogue, some people can pretend that they care about what you have to say, and some just turn heads on your opinion and experiences. L

Franz Kafka and The Metamorphosis

Franz Kafka was a German author who is known as one of the major figures of 20th-century literature. Born July 3, 1883, in Prague Czechoslovakia, of what is now the Czech Republic. Kafka grew up in a middle-class Jewish family in which life was arduous. When Kafka was only six years old, his two younger brothers, Georg and Heinrich, both died in infancy. Which left him the only son in a family that included three daughters. The relationship he had with his parents also made life at home very difficult. His mother, Julie was a homemaker who never understood Kafka's dreams of becoming a writer. His father, Hermann, had a very forcible personality, which made it very uneasy to live at home. The relationship he had with his father was said to have a very strong and profound effect on his writing and also on his personal life. It is said that his fathers overbearing ways helped Kafka find expression in his writing as the shy, passive, sensitive, victim who suffers and struggles. Kafka w

Sympathy and I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings

"Am I not a man and brother?' Slavery was prominent in the United States until the Civil War. The civil war started the domino effect when it granted blacks the right to basic freedoms one which included the freedom of speech. This period brought many great works, including Paul Dunbar's "Sympathy" (1899) and Maya Angelou's "I Know Why the Caged Bird" (1983). Both poems speak on the discrimination blacks faced during the civil rights era. Although both poems have their similarities, they also have their distinct differences: they are similar because both poems share the hope for freedom and oppression. However, they are distinctly different because one poem speaks of the experiences of a caged bird and a free bird, while the other just speaks on the caged bird itself. "But a prayer that he sends from his heart's deep core, But a plea, that upward to Heaven he flings." This line from Dunbar's "Sympathy" is a clear act of pure hope. A plea is

Business Strategies and Market Penetration

Introduction Market Penetration Market penetration is explained as an attempt to increase a firm's sales without diverging from its original product and market strategy. The firm attempts to improve its performance by finding a new set of customers for its current products (Ansoff, 1957). Before penetrating into a new market, a company has to do extensive research to obtain various information about the market in question in order to fully understand how to perform its operations in that market. The following is some of the information that DA Company will have to obtain about both UK and France before penetrating into the European market. Internal Analysis A large part of the decision on entering a new market is influenced by an assessment of the company's internal capabilities. SWOT analysis is one of the most common approaches in internal analysis to determine the strengths, weaknesses, threats and opportunities of the company. The most useful tools in assessing the strengths an

Shooting and Elephant Analysis

The essay "Shooting an Elephant," by George Orwell, is set in time during the 1800's when the country of Burma had been conquer and put under British imperialistic rule. "Shooting an Elephant," is illustrated through the eyes of Orwell himself while working as a British Imperial Officer during this time of British rule. During his time in Burma he undergoes a life-changing event that demonstrates the true effects of imperial control. In this essay Orwell describes the horrific killing of an elephant and the emotions and frustrations he endures while deciding the initial fate of the animal. Orwell's continuous use of literary techniques aid in demonstrating the true irony and emotional state of the event, which then only further validates the impact in which imperialism held. Orwell uses the emotional appeal as the narrator and a brilliant description of the spectating crowd; to successfully convince the audience of how imperialism not only negatively effects those b

Charter Influence on Canadian Politics

Ever since the Charter came into effect in 1982, it has had major impact on Canadian politics and law. The Charter allows the judicial and legislative branch to be transparent and able to be holding each other accountable. Many would argue that the charter has given court's infinite powers and they control the legislative branch. However, the courts perform a policing function for legislations to see if they violate the master law, the Charter. Therefore, if the legislation branch does their " first order Charter duties" properly, which is charter proofing their laws, they will not go for review with the Supreme Court of Canada (Maclvor 138). Each branch of government has their own responsibilities to pursue and they have different resources to achieve them. For example the, the judicial branch's responsibility is to protect the rights and freedoms of individuals where the legislation branch has to make laws to tackle down social issues (Maclvor 142). Each branch has their

Lenin's Role in the Bolshevik Revolution

Lenin's role within the Bolshevik party was essential for the consolidation of power. His strategic and ideologically driven leadership elevated the Bolshevik regime into a position of control. His tactical implementation of social, cultural, military, economic and military reforms, in conjunction with his intellectual leadership; all assisted in the Bolshevik's maintenance of power, and a shift towards socialism. Although many of Lenin's choices throughout his leadership have been questioned, it can be argued that the positive outcomes of his pragmatic decisions ultimately outweighed these. Throughout my essay, I will analyse Lenin's role in regards to the achievements attained by the Bolshevik's. By the start of 1917, the Tsarist rule was confronting intense issues, mainly due to his naive autocracy, "The fundamental cause of the Russian revolution was the incompatibility of the Tsarist state, with the demands of the modern state"1; the peasants were requesting land; the

An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge

There comes a point in time in which all of life's eventful moments must come to an end, this specific instant is that of which there is no return. Optimistically speaking, one should pass with as much peace, and as little pain as possible. Unfortunately, often times the case is not guaranteed. On the brink of death all of life comes to a halt, resulting in an endless stream of reflecting thoughts and wishful thinking. All of which are viewed through the eyes of Peyton Farquhar, in Ambrose Pierce's "An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge." In recapitulating such a somber story, particular literary elements such as symbolism, point of view, and conflict aid in conveying the over all theme. A theme of which expresses the tragedy in the last moments leading up to the ending point of someone's life. At a first glance, Peyton Farquhar is an average planter, coming from a well respected family in the south, within the state of Alabama. Owning many slaves Farquhar, a 'politician

Social Prestige and the English Language in Porteño Spanish

The purpose of this study is to examine some instances of the influence that the English language exerts upon Porteño Spanish both written and spoken, as well as the difference in the social significance of the use of words of English origin. Concerning the latter point, I will make use of some concepts taken from Sociolinguistics in order to cast further light on the subject. As to the sources of the material that will be here displaced, they can be –like the material itself - divided mainly into two. On the one hand, I will deal with some expressions in formal Spanish characterized by two features: a) At the grammatical or (more often) semantic level, objections can be raised concerning its "appropriateness" as "standard" Spanish; and b) these expressions are unmistakably borrowed from an English language source and –in many cases "literally" or clumsily- translated into Spanish. These expressions can be found both in spoken (usually

Ad Analysis - The Real Cost Campaign

The purpose of "The Real Cost" campaign is to educate teens about the harmful effects of tobacco use. Their goal is to reduce the number of teens who experiment with smoking and become lifelong tobacco users. This ad was an educational ad released in order to try and prevent smoking in the United States. The commercial for "The Real Cost" of smoking is trying to convince the audience of the real effects of smoking and help people to avoid smoking by using a shocking pathos using children, and a logos of showing actual health concerns of smoking. All of this rides the new healthy wave that America has been consumed with recently. This commercial is targeted toward teens as its audience to prevent them from being adult smokers. This is found from the company deciding to use a teen to buy the cigarettes, instead of an adult, because teens will relate more to a person their age than someone older. Teens make an easier connection to another teen, rather than to adults t

Eating Disorders and the Media

A cultural fixation on female thinness is not an obsession about female beauty, but an obsession about female obedience (wolf, 1991). The purpose of my research paper is to demonstrate different viewpoints on how the media plays a role in today's era. My research will study the influence of media on eating behaviors and the significant studies regarding this topic. My paper will also cover the outcomes of media portraying unhealthy body images, weight loss ads, and the influence of the internet encouraging eating disorders. Based on the research, it can be clear that the media is responsible for the increase of eating disorders in today's society. Therefore, it is important to take counteractive measures and look into this matter before any further damage is done. Psychological disorders cause people have dangerous behaviors, for example, people with eating disorders engage in dangerous eating behaviors or patterns. People who suffer from eating disorders have a negative outlook of the

Madness in Shakespeare's Hamlet

The mystery of the human mind is highlighted throughout William Shakespeare's "The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark," with a focus on protagonist Prince Hamlet's desperate attempts to uncover his father, King Hamlet's death. Prince Hamlet seeks revenge and his despair is evidenced by Shakespeare's twenty-two references to the term "madness." A fine line between sanity and insanity is cleverly depicted by Shakespeare as Hamlet reckons with his father's unexpected death, views the ghost of his father and attempts to understand his mother's abrupt marriage to Claudius, Hamlet's uncle. Prince Hamlet's erraticism and depressed tendency lead others to believe he is 1) "draw[n] [] into madness" (I.v.66)1. At the onset of the play, however, Prince Hamlet feigns insanity in an attempt to gain the trust of his enemies. 2) "His madness: if't be so," (II.ii.296) is wel

My Views on High School

There comes a time in every person's life when they have to take a stand about something. Sometimes that person continues to stand with the same position, but other times they change their mind about how one does something. School is just a stepping stone to the rest of one's life. One may make mistakes along the way and change how they do things and their view on certain subjects and matters. Just between middle school and high school a person can change a lot and grow in their schooling or sports. Parents are always right in what they say and a student should always listen to their advice and decide whether or not to actually do their advice. Which is why homework, staying late after school to study and grades are a good thing to monitor and to do. Going into high school I always did my homework. All through grade school and the awful middle school I was doing my homework striving for straight A's. When I was a freshman and decided to join my high school's color guard for the march

Immigrants and the American Dream

The American dream of the late nineteenth century and early twentieth century was predominantly marked by wealth. Immigrants who came to America to start a new life and live the America dream had disadvantages. Immigrants have a harder time in achieving the American dream compared to Americans. Americans already had a head start in accomplishing the American dream. The competitiveness took the place of cooperation as Americans and Immigrants fought to control the development and seize the wealth of their reconstructing country. Immigrants would leave their own native country in order to become wealthy. Immigrants knew that migrating to America would give them the best opportunity to live the American dream. Immigrants would define the American dream as being wealthy. With the industrial revolution rising, immigrants were looking to work in factories along with railroads. The industrial revolution changed everything for Immigrants looking for jobs. Immigrants who came to America to wo

What is True Love?

There are many different types of love, but being in love with a significant other makes a person more beautiful and pleasant every day. Falling in love with someone is different for a lot of people. In past relationships I've had, I truly thought I was in love. Letting guys walk all over me, as if I was their rag doll. They manipulated me to where I thought I was in love. The day my daughter's father left me was the day I realized it was never true love. When finding true love, one should be able to identify the three main characteristics: trustworthy, affectionate, and communication skills. Being trustworthy is being able to be honest or truthful. Being with someone who was never honest or truthful, made it harder for me to let another person into my life. I had a huge guard up. I knew that if I wanted to meet the love of my life, I would need to take my guard down. Not everyone in life will lie behind your back nor tell stories to make themselves look better. Being able to trust s

Female Characters in Beowulf

Throughout all of time, views on the role of women have drastically changed. In the Anglo- Saxon time period in which the novel, Beowulf, was written, women were seen to have specifically only one role that was what made them who they were. In Beowulf, one can see how women were looked down upon by the roles that the few female characters played. The author uses Grendel's mother, especially, to portray women to have aggressive and vicious characteristics. Along with these characteristics, he also uses Grendel's mother to portray the idea that women were less than men and had the solely role of being a mother. In one important scene in the novel, Grendel's mother's violent ways come out in a fight between her and Beowulf. The author uses this important scene in order to portray how society at this time thought of women as being trivial than men; described as "war-thirsty" and "kill-greedy" (lines 1497-1499). Through the usage of Grendel's mother's monstrous actions a

Parental Influence and Involvement in Reading Achievement

Literacy is essential for the development of a learning based society that strives for economic development and social concordance. The act of reading and writing enables students to learn about themselves, their local community, and the world. My mom and dad have been wonderful parents to me. They have strived to give a steady establishment to my life and future. Parental reading habits have a major influence on reading habits of children. How parents open their children to proficiency even before they enter school is critical for the later improvement of reading. The home environment is an vital setting for the accomplishment of education information since kids have extraordinary proficiency opportunities at home such as observing literacy activities of family members. When I was a little child my parents read to me almost every night. I experienced childhood in a domain where perusing was viewed as pleasant. My reading comprehension has always been extremely good, and I cannot than

Merchant of Venice: Justice in a Christian Society

In Shakespeare's The Merchant of Venice, justice and mercy are distinct opposites, with the former personified by Shylock, and the latter by Christians such as Antonio. One need look no further than Shylock's "Hath not a Jew eyes" soliloquy spoken in prose (III.i.52-72), which stands in counterpoint to Portia's speech on the "quality of mercy" in iambic pentameter (IV.i.190-212), to see the two at war. As seen by Shakespeare's intended Christian audience, here is the battle between the God of the Old Testament-Yahweh, a deity who rules according to Law-and the God of the New Testament, a loving, merciful Father. While Shakespeare believes justice to reign supreme (for no one is exempt from the law), he believes that an individual's worth is determined by his (or her) propensity to forgive, agreeing with Portia that "the quality of mercy is not strained" (IV.i.190). Shakespeare contrasts Antonio, a kind and merciful Christian, with the mean and merciless S

Red from Green by Maile Meloy

This short story by Maile Meloy, operates with the process of discovering things about ourselves such as our sexuality and where we want to head in life. It is at this crossroad that Sam Turner, the main character, finds herself. In the short story, Sam is forced to see herself and her father in a new light on a float trip where a grown man gives special attention different from other adult attention (p. 2, line 65). "Red from Green" is narrated from Sam's perspective and from a third person's perspective. The story is told in the past tense as if Sam is looking back at the trip "Sam Turner took her last float trip down the river with her father" (p. 1, line 1-2). She is fifteen years old, comes from Montana and is about to start her sophomore year. Sam's mother is dead, and therefore Sam lives alone with her father. The two of them has therefore created a strong bond. Sam has been offered a scholarship to a boarding school and because of this strong bond it was

The Influence of Media on Political Campagins

Determining the impact of the news media on a candidate's political success or campaigns can be difficult. The left-wing candidates always accuse the media of being controlled by the right wing, while the right wing candidates like to say that the left wing is mostly in control of the government. Traditional thinking, on the other hand, puts governmental control in the hands of the left wing (Dilliplane et al 239). Political campaigns are often shaped by those who are ready or willing to interact with the political candidate, and presidential debates and campaigning is quite important for success on the presidential level. As a current student majoring in communications, with an interest in journalism, it is important for me to improve my knowledge on the news media's impact on the political

Is Our American Criminal Justice System Racist?

Racial bias and discrimination in the United States' criminal justice system is an issue that has affected minorities for many decades. On the surface, crime and punishment seems to be a straightforward and rudimentary principle. Doesn't it make sense that if a person commits a crime that the person should face the repercussions from it? Although, when we begin to dig deeper it becomes evident that incarceration in the United States poses a broad moral and ethical dilemma that stems from years of racial injustice perpetuated against minorities, namely, African American and Hispanic men. America's approach to mass incarceration is racist and flawed because of the lack of sentencing and policing reform, how it negatively impacts the lives of inmates who are non-violent offenders, and because of the way that it affects inmates' lives once they get out of prison. It is well documented that there has been a substantial increase in America's prison population within the past 30 years. Ameri

Rosa's Struggle

Rosa Montano, 23, is an average college student. She lives with her mother and is the older of her two siblings. Also, Rosa is the first one to graduate from college. For the last four years, she has been in what she described as a daily struggle. In the island of Puerto Rico, a 65% of college students end up dropping out due to monetary issues. But she has kept on fighting until the end. She always knew she wanted to go to college, but she didn't really knew what she wanted to be. But she knew she wanted a profitable job. It wasn't until a casual chat with high school friends that she figured it out. They were talking about careers, and she said she didn't know what she wanted to study. One of her friends had a quick and easy solution. "When I spoke up and said I had no idea what I wanted to do, she turned around and asked what I liked to do. I replied that I liked to draw and play video games. She told me that was it. My calling was making video games." Rosa considered th

Marriage in Chaucer's The Clerk's Tale and The Franklin's Tale

The Canterbury Tales is a collection of tales written by Geoffrey Chaucer published in 1475. The Canterbury Tales, as a whole, exhibit different social conventions of the Fourteenth Century and exploit them for being a kind of facade. The Clerk's Tale and The Franklin's Tale address the social convention of marriage with reference to the role of obedient women and conventional versus unconventional marriage. Furthermore, how obedience affects the quality and outcome of a marriage. Obedience will be defined as; "Compliance with an order, request, or law or submission to another's authority" (OED). This definition applies to the authoritative nature of the husbands' in both tales. The differing levels of obedience are portrayed through the Clerk's character of Griselda and the Franklin's character of Dorigen. Griselda is confined by the restrictive nature of a conventional marriage. The interpretation of Griselda's position by the end of the tale is ambiguous as a results of th
