World War 2 and the Canadian Family

The Second World War (WWII) was one of the most significant events in Canadian History. Although Canadian soil did not see battles, Canadian Families were profoundly affected, both during and after the war. The traditional role of women in the family was forever changed as a result of the war; returning men suffered the effects of the war both mentally, and physically; and children's lives were forever changed, as families struggled to rebuild. To understand the effect of post World War 2 on women, we must first explore how the war impacted women even before D-Day. Although Civilian Canadians did not see the destruction that European civilians saw they were not totally immune. During 1939, forty percent of the male population between the ages of 18-45 had enlisted. Canada's entry into the War on September 10th , 1939 led to the mobilization of women on an unprecedented scale. Prior to 1939 600 000 women worked outside the traditional homemaker and housewife role. With husbands, f

Short Story - The Transgender Journey

He told me a story. He used his ruined voice like aged hands to pick the lock on his past as I watched him sob and wail on the cold bathroom floor. The memories plagued him day and night never giving an inch of freedom to breathe. I knew the voices screamed in anguish within his racing mind yet nothing I could ever do seemed to help. I grew up with Shelly and being next door neighbours helped our friendship grow stronger. As the years dwindled by Shelly was changing into someone, I didn't understand. He would wear bright red nail polish and beautiful diamond earrings when I knew it didn't seem right. Shelly was always different, and I admired that but once high school started so did the whispers and taunts. As a teenager being different is a concept that everyone despises and avoids, but for my best friend it was never a choice. "Are you okay?" I whispered gently careful not to frighten the child-like person curled up on my lap. "I have to tell you something very impor

The Search for a Working Government

In an essay called Democracy and Oligarchy, Aristotle uses question answer rhetorical mode of writing to provoke thought. Throughout the essay, Aristotle layers in questions towards the readers and once the question is asked, it is followed up with an answer. Aristotle insists on communicating to his audience to keep them hooked and focused on the point he is trying to prove. While reading Aristotle's essay, it was easy for me to understand and keep up the context because instead of inferring an answer I was given one. The United States' government is a form of democracy, with variations. A huge variation the United States put into their form of government the ability to elect representatives who vote directly on laws instead of citizens. This significant variation generates controversy over the United States being either a Democracy or an Oligarchy. Separation of Power and Checks and Balances doctrine are crucial parts in a democratic nation. The Separation of Power doctrine co

Partial Thickness Burns

Though the thought of being the lead care provider in a major traumatic event excites many Emergency Medical Service providers, many more are intimidated by the thought of having to care for a burned patient. The intimidation behind the care of burn patients is not necessarily unfounded, as patients suffering from burns present a unique and often times complicated challenge to those that would care for them. A major factor in this challenge is the peculiarities presented by the actual wounds themselves. Each burn fits into a category, but recognizing which category can often be difficult. Especially partial thickness burns, which separate into two sub categories on their own. That is why it is crucial to identify partial thickness burns along with possible complications and presentations, perform proper treatment, and transport the patient to an appropriate center to provide definitive care. As with most burns, it is challenging to determine what classification the burn falls under

Humanity in The Lowest Animal by Mark Twain

In the story, "The Lowest Animal" by Mark Twain, Twain states that humanity has become the worst it can be, but it can be saved. Mankind is too greedy and too oppressive to make a change. Humanity is so bad that we kill each other for the dumbest reasons. I agree with Twain's statement that humanity is at the worst it can be, but refute that it can be improved. The people of this world are too cruel to be saved. According to Twain, he states "Man is the only animal that robs his helpless fellow of his country-takes possession of it and drives" (Twain 472). Humanity is the only living things that rob each other, who steal and then even kill. Twain even says that animals are more intelligent and more respectful that humans themselves because they actually can get along, and are the only living things that don't have a war. Humans feel good after doing something they should not, it's just this monster within them. He is the only one who causes pain for others, just fo

The PEPCON Explosion

Abstract On May 4, 1988 at the Pacific Engineering and Production Company of Nevada (PEPCON), a large fire of ammonium perchlorate (AP) quickly ensued. Two large explosions occurred during this fire, measuring 3.0 and 3.5 on the Richter scale, and were equivalent to an explosion of hundreds of tons of TNT. This even claimed the lives of two plant workers, injured 372 people, and caused over $70 million in property damage. This paper looks at what caused the fire, and if it could have been prevented. There were dozens of issues with the PEPCON facility, and it's staff. The biggest issues being the large amounts of AP being improperly stored, the lack of knowledge on how to fight fires, and the large amounts of AP around the facility as a result of poor house cleaning. The building also had some major engineering flaws in it, including the building being made of combustible materials, and a lack of sprinkler systems, or fire alarm systems. These tragic events caused a fair bit of poli

Concussions and Brain Damage

Concussions and brain damage are related in a way that can affect these children depending on where they hit their head. Cheerleading and football are examples of sports that can increase the percentage to head injuries. The first part of the brain I will be discussing will be the frontal lobe. The frontal lobe is the most exposed and easily hit, not only are they large, but they are in an area that is accessed easily. The functions that will be impacted would be emotions, impulse control, language, memory, and social/sexual behavior. As we are talking about children, they might of not been able to develop these parts very well yet. Therefore, they would be exposing vulnerable parts which would end up disabling them to even form the parts! The next part of an impact I will be talking about would be the parietal lobes. The parietal lobe is located behind the frontal lobe. The parietal lobes a

Gilgamesh's Trials and Tribulations

The story of Gilgamesh, king of Uruk, dates back to before the bible was written, making it the oldest piece of literature or written text in the world. This story was written on eleven clay tablets, and it gives a detailed account of Gilgamesh's hero's journey. In this story, Gilgamesh's thinking changes over the course of his journey when he realizes that he has to accept death. Gilgamesh is consumed by his arrogance that he will ultimately die one day, so why not die a heroic death. This is visible in two particular places; one place we can see this is when Enkidu pleads to the Elders of Uruk to persuade Gilgamesh to cease his quest for glory, Gilgamesh retorts, "Dear friend, has your courage returned? Are you ready to leave? Or are you still afraid of dying a hero's death?" (97). We also see that Gilgamesh is opposed to cowardice in the story when Enkidu questions their upcoming journey to kill Humbaba, Gilgamesh answered, "Why, dear friend, do you speak like a cowa

Girl by Jamaica Kincaid

Jamaica Kincaid wrote "Girl" in 1978. "Girl" is a story about a young female, a girl, getting advice from an older woman in a long single sentence narrative. Semicolons are used to separate advice but then at times the advice is repeated to add emphasis. The main theme in "Girl" is the dangers of female sexuality. The presumed dangers of female sexuality are seen across cultures and are even ingrained by women themselves. The older character imparts advice and scolds the young girl repeatedly. The older woman scolds her for how she walks, how she play marbles, and how she talks to other people. It's almost like she wants her daughter to realize that she is not a boy and never will be. She is essentially saying that a boy's life has more value than hers, and they can get away with acting a certain way. Gender inequality is at the backdrop of this story. Gender inequality happens in all cultures. Some cultures use mutilation, while others have a glass ceil

The Darkening Sea by Elizabeth Kolbert

Elizabeth Kolbert's "The Darkening Sea" was first published in The New Yorker but later appeared in the book, The Global Warming Reader, which brings light to the problem of pollution and its effect on the oceans. The book was published in 2012, and contains work from over 10 different climate authors. "The Darkening Sea" presents the mostly unknown argument that our oceans are absorbing upwards of 90% of the pollution that is released into the atmosphere. The article is aimed at an audience that believes that global warming is a problem, but may not realize that pollution is already affecting us, and will continue to get much worse. Kolbert argues that the repercussions of this "invisible" problem are more catastrophic than we understand. The problem is invisible because most people do not associate pollution with the ocean. Kolbert's underlying main argument disagrees with that belief by stating that pollution has a large effect on the ocean, and that l

Kashrut - Jewish Law and the Purity System

Jewish Orthodoxy teaches that a Jew is someone born of a Jewish mother or has converted, sometimes through marriage. There are three main denominations or branches of Judaism. The main division is along the lives of Orthodox, Reform and Conservative. There are also several smaller religious movements alongside them. All Jews are understood to keep many different mitzvahs although how strictly these rules are adhered to is dependent on the branch of Judaism followed. This essay will outline halakha, mainly the kashrut laws and how they offer a fuller appreciation of Judaism as it is lived. Kashrut is the body of Jewish law that deals with the 'purity' system. It comes from the Hebrew root Kak-Shin-Reish, meaning proper or correct. It is governed by a variance of observance of halakha, the entirety of Jewish teaching and law (Harvey, 2015). It rests foremost upon the commandments found in the written and oral Torah and concerns itself with the correct application of mitzvoh to

My Church Experience

Growing up I never really looked at religion as a huge thing. My family isn't very religious, and we just never really talked about it. I don't really know what I would call myself, but for the most part I don't know what to believe and honestly don't really believe in anything at all when it comes to religion. In high school I had some very religious friends but they never forced me to be involved with religion. This thanksgiving break I decided to attend church service at Cornerstone Christian Church in O'Fallon Illinois. I decided on this because it was something I was completely unaware of and was somewhat interested to learn about. My alarm went off at about 8:00 A.M to go to the church service at 9:45. I drove to my best friends house because I was attending church service with her and her family. When we arrived at the church I really didn't know what to expect. I sat there for the whole service and there was a lot that I learned from just one hour of listening. From the s

Argumentative Essay - Animal Testing

Animal testing may be cruel, but it's a vital part of research. Although the testing is at the cost of the animal's life, the information we have gained through the research has helped us make lots of advancements in medicine, space, and it's an ethical substitute for human testing. The people that are protesting against testing medicine on animals are, usually, the same people that are using these medicines when they get sick. In the article, "How much does Animal Testing Tell Us?", Frankie Trull claims that if we were to stop animal testing, then we would be closing the door to advancements, such as curing diseases, and treating sicknesses. What good are doctors if their are no medicines? People that have lived through a severe illness will tell you how grateful they are for the medications that saved their lives. In addition, Robin Mckie states that a ban on animal testing would be taking a step back in the race to cure canc

Collegiate Athletes: Not to Be Paid

Day after day, week after week, year after year, division I athletes have been putting their heart and soul into a sport. All their hard work for the love of the game has lead them to a University where they can showcase their skills and talent. At the division I level, it is a business where athletes contribute to bringing in profit, and by doing this, athletes have to perform well and win games to encourage more attendance. The common, controversial question that many people have asked is, should college athletes get paid? Since collegiate athletics are within an educational setting, they should not receive pay for their athletic contribution. The National Collegiate Athletic Association, NCAA, is an enterprise and requires no amateur athlete to be paid. Athletes are given their fair share benefits as being apart of a team, which could include food, clothes, or even receiving financial help through athletic scholarships, etc. Student athletes being paid would only create an ongoing p

Frederick Douglas - Slave Owner Letter

In recent events, Mr. Frederick Douglas has become a free man and that he is saying slavery was wrong to him. I said nay to that when he came into my care I did everything in my power to keep him, fed, clothed and safe. When he first came to me he was such a young child.. dirty, cold, skinned to the bone like he hasn't eaten in days. I felt horrified that some owner had put him through this such stage. Possibly how can someone do this to a human being? I purchased him for my son to have his servant just as his father have owned many slaves for our plantation. My wife grew fond of his image thinking he was a special person. Sort of like you see a strong horse that's meant for great things. Over the years passed we continued to have ownership my wife found out he knew how to read and write and that he knew how to speak out language as we do today. I always trusted my wife in her judgment. So I decided not to do anything about it. We further gathered information that he learned all that

Overview of Angelman Syndrome

What is Angelman Syndrome? Angelman Syndrome is a genetic disorder that affects the nervous system; this is a rare condition which is sometimes called the "happy puppet" syndrome because children with Angelman's Syndrome may look and move in ways similar to a puppet controlled by a string. The children have epilepsy, learning difficulties, severe speech delay, jerky movements, tongue-thrusting, a characteristic facial appearance and a happy mood with sudden bursts of laughter. Angelman syndrome is caused by the absence of certain genes normally presents on the copy of chromosome 15 inherited from the mother. What is Chromosome 15? Humans normally have 46 chromosomes in each cell, divided into 23 pairs. Two copies of chromosome 15, one copy inherited from each parent, form one of the pairs. Persuasive Writing: Legalizing Same-Sex Marriage

Ladies and gentlemen, I am fairly certain that most of you here must have loved before. Everyone loves and needs to be loved. But what if you can't marry the person you sincerely love, the person you feel like they are your soulmate. What if your sweet family can't be protected by the laws since it is an 'unofficial' marriage. This is what happening to Australian homosexual couples whose marriages are not recognized. Albeit voted as one of the most gay-friendly country, Australia still bans same-sex marriage, after the passing of the Marriage Amendment Act in 2004, in which the government chose to update and amend the Marriage Act 1961 and insert the words "marriage means the union of a man and a woman to the exclusion of all others, voluntarily entered into for life." The ban serves only to hurt, to discriminate and to deprive more than 33,700 same-sex couples and their families of equal dignity, rights and protection by the law. Subsequently, I strongly believe that it is time

Religion in the Age of Elizabeth

In a period when political and religious ideas were enmeshed and differences entrenched, the ascension of a Protestant Queen to a religiously confused nation was precarious. Despite the brevity of Mary's reign, she had managed legislatively to reassemble Catholicism. Following a decade of religious oscillation and volatile foreign relations, Elizabeth's religious settlement was not only fluid and ecumenical however Elizabeth was not predominantly concerned that every man, woman and child accepted the doctrines and practices of "one consistent religion. What she wanted was obedience and loyalty." It may have instituted quasi-Catholic church vestments and aesthetics, however the settlement punished those who were publicly defiant and refused to comply with its Protestant practices. When discussing the actual threat of English and continental Catholics posed, one must be cautious in regard to exaggerated accounts by Protestants with vested interests, such as Walter Mildmay and Ear

Love in Romeo and Juliet and Much Ado about Nothing

Shakespeare explains the idea of men in love with a fatal tragedy or sometimes a comic resolved endings. In Romeo and Juliet love is seen as a tragic sin that causes people to turn back on their family's belief and faith but also turn back on their religion that has so much importance to them both as Capulets and Montagues. Romeo was characterized to be seen as Petrarchan lover at the beginning of the play whilst later on as an archetypal courtly lover which results in a fatal tragic death. Whilst on the other hand, in Much Ado about Nothing love is portrayed in two different ways as of the fact of how each gender was seen and the status of males and females. Benedick at the beginning of the story was portrayed as an egocentric bombastic military man who can never be in love as he objectifies women and is very misogynistic which is the starting ground for all the conflict between Benedick and Beatrice. However as they are both very witty, sharp and perceptive they start their relationship with a hate-love relation and as it evolves Shakespeare ends the play by resolving it. Also, Shakespeare displays that both the men in love, Romeo and Benedick, are very dangerous and reveal

Transcendence from an Oppressed Society - The Bluest Eye

Toni Morrison's novel The Bluest Eye provides insight into the injustices of racism and poverty in America in the mid-1900s through the perspective of nine-year-old Claudia and ten-year-old Frieda MacTeer. Living in Lorain, Ohio, with their parents, the MacTeers take in a young girl as a resident named Pecola. Pecola is a young black girl who throughout the story is critiqued, shamed, and virtually destroyed due to the corrupt morals of her society. Morrison describes how African-American girls during this time period were encouraged to aspire to be white. All of the female African-American characters in the novel have grown up in a society that does not find them beautiful or even worthy of being looked at. Pecola is constantly identified by her ugliness, and she fixates on what society deems to be a symbol of beauty and purity – blue eyes. Pecola's belief that blue eyes will make her beautiful shows two specific effects of racism on young African-American girls: low self-esteem

Mental Health in the United States

There is a large estimate of individuals in the United States who experience an array of mental health issues. These issues include anxiety, PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder), BPD (borderline personality disorder), depression, schizophrenia, and bipolar disorder. There are different factors that contribute to these mental issues, and also, some show greater numbers from one gender to another as well as one race to another. In this paper, there will be an array of information gathered that identifies the powerful and consequential effects of mental issues, and how individuals can take preventive measures to mental health issues. Mental health, the poor identification and preventive measures of it have been and continue to be a major health concern. These health issues do not only affect people as an individual, but the communities that they are in and also the economy which mental health can limit the individuals from reaching their maximum potential as far as wage and earnings and promotional opportunities. This in no way indicates that indiv

Plato's Contibutions to Democracy

Democracy is a debatable aspect and it centres on different perspectives that are held by different theorists. The heated debate of democracy includes the differing views concerning the definition of democracy, controversy over the suitable form of democracy since there are different forms, lack of relevant cases where total democracy was implemented and there are questions on who sets down the agreed levels and standards of democracy as the yardstick which takes precedence over other forms of regimes. This then leads to a continuous and controversial debate on democracy, in which Plato also brought forward his argument which is more of a critic to democracy. There is no general accepted definition for democracy and it is a contentious subject which is open to debate and it has faced much criticism from different theorists in which case Plato is one of the major contributors. The term democracy is believed to have originated from a Greek term "demos kratos" which means the ru
