As Birds Bring Forth the Sun by Alistair MacLeaod

Karma is a popular belief that most of the world's population has adopted for years; it's what drives most, if not all of human actions. It is the thought that words, and/or actions often determine what will come around. Judging by the fates of 'good' people, there is no certainty that the consequence of doing a good deed will produce either a good or bad outcome. Superstitious beliefs are also what drive the belief of karma, the notion that history will always repeat itself, one deed done a million times will always produce the same outcome. This paper will show that the outcome of karma is inevitable, which will be seen through the character of the protagonist. The effect of superstitious beliefs will also be a topic of discussion. The author highlights some of these effects through the text. In this text the author establishes setting by the good use near vivid description. Firstly, the narrator creates the scene with proper vocabulary, giving readers a good sense of the surr

DBQ Essay - The Great Depression

There was a significant difference in the Federal Government's reaction to the prosperity of the Roaring Twenties and the economic disaster of the Great Depression. Hoover's decision to maintain a laissez-faire approach ultimately failed. When Franklin Roosevelt came to office, he imposed the New Deal, which drastically altered the Federal Government's role in the economy and created a very proactive approach to combating the depression. President Herbert Hoover was the president in office at the time of the stock market crash and the start of the Great Depression. He believed that a laissez-faire approach to government was best and upheld these beliefs in his attempts to resolve the nation's economic problems. Hoover thought that trickle down economics would be the solution. Trickle down economics is the concept that the rich will spend their money at businesses in the U.S. which will "trickle down" and put money in the paychecks of the workers. Hoover said, "The wise and judi

Taking Care of a Needy World

6.8 million people residing around the world, including, three million children, are in need of sustenance. They need somewhere stay, a place to call home, and parents in desperate need to find food for there children and them selves. People all over the world live in poverty, many children around the world are deprived of quality education, and people in Syria are forced to seek out refugee camps due to the danger in their country. I would donate $50,000 to the charity Save the Children (STC) because I believe in bettering the lives and future of people all around the world. Poverty is all around the world including the United States. It is something that people encounter on a daily basis; STC gives these people aspiration for a greater tomorrow. They provide them with food that has been donated by people around the world. Imagine STC didn't exist and these people would starve to death, knowing that there is so much to give in this advanced world that we live in. Think about all the canned tom

Bioethical Issue: Mandatory DNA Fingerprinting

Bioethical Issue: Mandatory DNA Fingerprinting Science has come a long way in DNA fingerprinting. DNA fingerprinting isn't just a sample of your fingerprint; it is a sample of your DNA. "DNA fingerprinting is a test to identify and evaluate genetic information" (webmd.com) There are definite up sides to this as well as down sides. In the book, Essentials to biology, it states "Arthur Lee Whitfield has served 22 years of a 63-year sentence for rape when he was notified that he had gained the right to use DNA fingerprinting to establish his innocence. Luckily, biological evidence had been saved form his jury trial, and DNA fingerprinting shower that his DNA did not match that of the rapist. However, this DNA did match that of another inmate, who was serving a life sentence for an unrelated rape conviction." This is a fantastic example of how DNA mandatory fingerprinting would be great to have. Without it, this man would have spent most of his life behind bars for a

Mental Development in Northanger Abbey

In Jane Austen's Northanger Abbey, the characterization of the protagonist -Catherine Morland- seems to be constructed by her own fantasies, extracted by her reading of Gothic novels and her simple and naive thinking, which corresponds to her equally simple actions. At least, this is the start of the story Jane Austen displays at the beginning of the book. The fact that Catherine does not have the capacity to properly deal with her social environment, can be seen as the complication (Klarer 172) of the plot, meaning that the denouement (Klarer 173) of the plot would be her eventual mental development displayed in the last scenes of the book, when Catherine interprets the letter from Isabella impeccably and acts in a way that is suitable for an adult woman, and the exposition the exhibition of her innocence and naivety in the beginning. Jane Austen uses the alienation of the protagonist in Northanger Abbey to establish a mental development, triggered by prodding the bubble fabricated

NFL: Inconsistent Officiators or Unfair Rules?

The reality of football is that there are 46 different types of penalties that referees are looking for in every play. As a referee, this means that every play you have to be making sure none of these rules are being broken, and because of the vast amount of them it becomes as inconsistent a job that you can have. Penalties/fouls are a huge part of every sports game, but unfortunately they are a more inconsistent part, in particular, to football than in any other sport. There's always controversy in sports games, but regardless it seems that the NFL gets the most heat when it comes to controversial issues from its bad calls/lack of calls and poor and inconsistent rulings on disciplinary issues. A football player's job is to play football, but the inconsistency of football can make a lasting impact on football players' careers. The need for change has come and gone; it is now affecting sports fans, the players themselves, and teams as a whole. The NFL has numerous amounts of issues to

Stalin and Animal Farm

The dystopian novel "Animal Farm," published in August 1945, is an allegory of the Russian Revolution. The animals and the events in George Orwell's novel parallel the characters and incidents of the Russian Revolution. Orwell laments that the 1917 Russian Revolution resulted in a government more totalitarian and oppressive than the one it overthrew. Manor Farm represents Russia, and Old Major, Snowball, and Napoleon represent the prominent figures of the Russian Revolution namely Marx/ Lenin, Trotsky and Stalin respectively. "Animal Farm" is primarily a condemnation of Stalinism and his misuse of power to suit his own needs. Joseph Stalin (1878-1953) was the dictator of Soviet Union from 1929 to 1953. Born into poverty as Joseph Vissarionovich Djugashvili, Stalin became involved in revolutionary politics as a young man. Stalin joined up with the Bolshevik revolutionaries. This was an underground group of people that followed the commu

The Benefits of Breastfeeding

Each year 800,000 children would survive if they were breastfed from birth up until the age of two years old. Breastfeeding is the most superlative way to provide infants with the proper nutrients and vitamins for growth and development. The process of breastfeeding has been around since the beginning of time, and for that reason it has become a common practice among all mothers. However, an abundant amount of mothers find it strenuous and stressful to breast feed because it requires utmost attention towards the baby, and maximum responsibility. These setbacks will only cause severe consequences in the future for the baby and for the mother. Breastfeeding is prominent because it consists of nutrients, protects from developing allergies and certain illnesses, and reduces post partum depression for mothers. Breast milk contains an ample amount of nutrients. The vitamins in breast milk helps fight several dangerous germs by creating a protective layer made up of the infant's mucus membr

Science and the National Curriculum for England

Science is a core subject in the National Curriculum for England, and this position is rarely questioned. However, is this justified? This essay will outline the main arguments for science's, currently secure, place in education. There is also the question of whether school science can truly reflect science in the 'real world' and how relevant it is to the lives of the students that study it. The discussion does not just not end with the place of science, there are also multiple running disputes about the content and structure of the Science Curriculum. These disputes and the current changes to the curriculum will also be addressed. The National Curriculum was introduced in 1988, following the Education Reform Act. The establishment of a National Curriculum was deemed necessary in order to standardise the content and objectives of school teaching (Nicolson and Holman, 2003). Science is a core and compulsory subject in the National curriculum and should be taught from ages 5 to 16.

America and the Syrian Refugees

Throughout its history, America has proven itself to be a nation of immigrants. It was founded by immigrants, and immigrants have played an important role in the development of America. Also, America is known as the place which has welcomed refugees when they have suffered in their own countries. According to the U.S. Department of State, there have been more than 650,000 displaced Europeans given admission into America with refugee status. Millions of people from China, Cuba, the former Soviet Union, Hungary, Korea, Poland, Yugoslavia, and Vietnam fleeing Communism have been welcomed to America. By February 2016, millions of refugees from Syria fled their homes because of the Syrian Civil War. To find asylum, the refugees migrated into European countries, such as Turkey, France, the United Kingdom, Spain, Middle Eastern countries like Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, and many countries around the world. They are very welcomed in these countries. America, however, literally slammed the doo

Masters and Slaves in Gulliver's Travels and Frankenstein

Relationships are a continually evolving and developing process. The way relationships unfold depends greatly on the structure. The most successful are those that have the best intentions for both parties involved at the top of mind at all times. On the opposite spectrum, those who are focused solely on utilizing another to accomplish an individual selfish desire are often left broken and short-lived. The relationships formed in both Gulliver's Travel and Frankenstein highlight how they can evolve for the negative should one side attempt to selfishly take advantage of the other. The taking advantage of another to accomplish personal goals can be defined as slavery. In both Gulliver's Travel's by Jonathan Swift and Frankenstein by Mary Shelly, there is a striking resemblance to the relationship between a parent and child in regards to development. In the beginning, they were fully influenced and controlled by their masters or parents and did what their influencers pleased. They create

Choosing a Career as an Engineer

I could never picture myself sitting in a cubicle, staring at a computer screen, counting the seconds until I could go home. Ever since I can remember, I have always worked and learned better with a hands-on activity rather than a simple worksheet or reading assignment. It just seems so natural for me to create and build. Nothing can beat the feeling of watching your creation that you've put hours of sweat and tears in work successfully. And for that reason, I chose engineering to be my path. As a child I always felt the urge to take something apart. I need to see what's inside and what makes it work. When I see a machine or a cool electronic I don't just notice the function of the device but instead, the parts working together to get its job done. I nee

Philosophy Essay - Affirmative Action

According to philosopher Albert Mosley, affirmative action is morally justified because a diverse environmental benefit everyone and policies should be adopted if they are beneficial to all. I will defend Mosely's position in response to the objection that one's qualifications are superior to ensuring diversity in the work force. A diverse environment aids in counteracting our accustomed thoughts of other races and cultures. Therefor, Mosley believes affirmative action is justified. Affirmative actions are governmental policies developed in light of racial and sexual discrimination in society (Mosley, 125). The goal of these regulations are to provide minorities with access to positions they otherwise would be unlikely to attain because of the impact of historical injustices. By removing the stigma surrounding minorities it ensures everyone is given equal opportunities. To reinforce his claim on the benefits of diversity Mosely uses the Regents of the Univ

The Free Mason Fraternity

Sometimes when someone is in distress they look for someone that can help. That person can be a friend or sibling. In some cases those bonds can grow further reaching many people, and they can eventually form groups, organizations, and fraternities. A fraternity is a group of individuals with common professions and/or interests that look to uplift their community. With the rising of violent crimes, the accessibility of people through social media, and having the world in the palm of an individual's hands by owning a smart phone it is refreshing to have a small sector of people devoted to the concerns of each other. In many cases these individuals in these groups or organizations are business owners, politicians, physicians and etc. These groups often help their member's network for job opportunities, investment ventures, and the well-being of the organizations family members. Some organizations have developed their own way of communicating with other members in their group and with

My Mother - She Carried Me

Over the past seven years, I have had a stomach condition. Doctors have not been able to diagnose what it is. This condition causes me to throw up randomly and without warning. My mother has spent endless nights in the hospital with me, screaming at doctors because they are doctors, and they are supposed to know what is wrong. Of course when something is wrong, we want to know what is wrong right then and there. Sadly, this is not always possible, because doctors have run so many tests but still have no answers. My mother has taken me from doctor to doctor in an attempt to figure out what might be wrong with my stomach. The first year of my problem, I decided to go gluten free. The second year, I eliminated dairy, and the third year I had to kick caffeine out which is pretty much pop and coffee. Each year brought personal sacrifices mentally and physically. Although it was hard for me to stay strong, I had an even stronger woman by my side. My mom is my main supporter and care giver.

Literature Genre - Fantasy

In the fantasy genre, the reader gets the chance to enter an ancient and forgotten world that no longer exists. In this genre you will automatically go back to a time where everything was made of wood and steel. All this puts the reader in a comfort zone where you don't have to be afraid of possible evil technology and nuclear weapons. Furthermore, there you can drop your fears from potentials evil scientist with distasteful behaviors. Today we mainly call that 'the social medias'. They are posting all danger, miserable tragedies, etc. In addition to all this, how is it possible for the fantasy genre to be so popular when we are living in the century? Why isn't high-tech and flying cars the most beloved subject, and why do we still want to listen those old stories from the past century? This is what I want to illuminate. First, in the short text 'Feeding on Fantasy' by Lev Grossman, he describes the vision on the medieval age as nostalgic and sentimental. The future isn't what it used to be – the past is ga

A Human Tide - The Refugee Crisis

There is a refugee crisis happening right now. Not a migrant crisis, for that would imply that the Syrians fleeing their bombed out, war-torn country are doing so because they'd like a change of scenery. These people are running for their lives, from people, native and foreign who kill indiscriminately. Millions of people have already fled their homeland in the hope of finding a life without violence, without danger, without war. So they flee to Europe, the closest neighbour who just so happens to be capable of aiding the refugees until their country is safe again. Despite the relative ease of doing so, there is still an astounding amount of xenophobia regarding this issue. If it were not for the ignorance of the vocal minority, the refugees would not be as harassed and abused as they have been. The media is also guilty of this, but is capable of changing it's opinion on matter far too easily. Racists and xenophobes shout about why letting other human beings into their precious coun

Silvercrest by Carl Philips - Literary Devices

Symbolism is the use of an object or action to express ideas, emotions, or a state of mind. Writers use symbols as a way to allude or imply something. Symbols are often more powerful than directly stating an idea, and they tend to move on a deeper level. They can even bring a subconscious connection to the poem when used correctly. There are many reasons why writers and authors use symbols, and many people can agree that they bring life and essence to their writing. Throughout the collections of poems in Silverchest, Carl Phillips uses symbolism often, in a lot of different ways. Throughout reading the compilation poems of Silverchest, I came across the use of a horse a few different times. This stood out to me in many different ways because I have always had the idea that a horse symbolizes freedom or passion. While looking deeper into the poems, I began to see that the horse might symbolize more than that. In the poem "Anyone Who Had A Heart", Phillips talks about the idea of

The NAACP and Brown Vs. Board of Education

In 1896, there was a white man sitting next to another man on a train car in Louisiana. They were having a wonderful conversation that soon turned towards their origin stories. The country was going through changing times, known as Reconstruction. In, 1896 there was a situation in Louisiana About this black man called Plessy, who was one-eighth black. The situation happened on a train car in Louisiana from a white man who was outraged when he found out that this man was black. He kicked him out of the train car, then the black man took his anger to court and changed America. That black man's name was Plessy and the Plessy v. Ferguson court case began because Plessy violated the Louisiana 1890 separate-car law. So, later that year, Plessy went to court to argue that the "Separate Car Act" violated the Thirteenth and Fourteenth Amendments to the Constitution. After several more years in 1954, this started five more court cases, like Brown vs. Board of Education. The Brown v. Board case used the ruling set by the supreme court of the Plessy v. Ferguson case to abolish the separate but equal law in Topeka, Kansa

Technology, Global Competition and Organization

Executive Summary In this era of technology and global competition, an organisation has to undergo changes to sustain its competitive advantage in the market. However, with changes, employees are the ones affected and might be resistant to changes. This is observed in the newly formed accounting team when three firms merged to become "Goldberg, Choo and McKay Associates". Analysis of the team's behaviour from information provided in the case study reveals that the causes of inefficiency and unproductiveness were largely due to adverse team processes, poor communication which led to conflict and frustration amongst team members. Not to mention, due to the scattered locations of the team members, working as a virtual team in different time zones brought its set of challenges. The individualist culture of each team member with different values and expectations made it impossible for the team to develop further in the 'forming' stage under '5 stages of team development' model.

Women Who Defied Restrictions

The great nation today known as the United States of America, has not always existed in its current state of glory. It too had to start from the bottom of the chain, and work its way up to the greatness of today. This start began during the time period that can be referred to as the age of exploration and colonization, and it took place between the years of 1492 and 1750. This time period is extremely important to the birth of American Literature, and it was thanks to many settlers coming to this New Land, now the United States, that we have great literary works to refer back to when speaking about the beginning of our nation. The focus for the duration of this paper will lean more towards the important women writers of this time period. This is due to the fact that during this time where Puritanism was the common religion, women had certain restrictions placed upon them due to the ideals and beliefs of the Puritans. One of these specific restrictions is that women of this time were no

Writing - The Paragraph as a Basic Organization

Abstract Writing and putting an accurate word on a paper is quite an easy task, but writing a sentence is a bet difficult. Writing a paragraph is the most difficult academic activity. It is much more required as compared to any other activity in the major of writing. To know and organize a paragraph in a coherent, cohesive and united way, it means that you know and have the command on the foundation in any pyramid of academic writing. Writing a simple cover letter, an academic essay, B.A thesis or Ph.D. dissertation is impossible in a case when you as a writer do not have sound and reliable knowledge on paragraph. The length of paragraph depends on the writer. It is varied from a single sentence to a full page. Starting with a few simple sentences on a paper is not enough. Instead, we need to make it sure that our paragraph is based on good coherence, cohesion and unity Preface Writing dates back thousands of years. People used to write on cave walls, stones and on various other th
