I want to be able to spend time with my family! "Some parents noted that students in school longer would have to stay up later to complete their homework" (Text C). Teachers tend to issue a large amount of homework to students that is a review of what was done. Yes, homework may be a review for students to reinforce the lesson, but some don't even know what was taught at all. This will lead to students getting tutoring on the side. This takes even more time out of the day which will mean no family time because of longer school days. Making the school days longer is going to be difficult and will most likely be unsuccessful. "Extending the school day would also help families. In two-parent households, women have increasing entered the workplace, and in single-parent households, there is more of a need for the adults to work" (Text B). Just because both parents work does not mean it's okay to make the school day longer! There are people that baby-sit! .
Some people may agree with President Obama and think that extending the school day and year is a good idea. "American children spend the least amount of time in the classroom when compared to other countries"(Text A). Just because we aren't in a classroom as long as others does not mean we learn any less. The amount in which we learn really depends on the type of teacher they have. Certain teachers take to long to start so they get nothing done! That doesn't mean that we have to lengthen the school days because of how our teachers approach the lessons! Based on the chart from Text A, we have the lowest amount of school days compared to the rest of the countries that were documented.(180 days) Which in turn shows why we may have lower SAT and standardized test scores; however Finland may have 10 more days of school than the United States, but they don't give homework! Also, Japan with the most amount of school days (243 days) only requires nine years of compulsory education.
