White Fang is very sad and cries and whines for his mother. The other dogs in the village begin to terrorize White Fang. One dog, Lip-Lip forces himself at White Fang. Each time White Fang is attacked, he becomes more vicious and vicious. White Fang becomes more wolf like than a dog. Gray Beaver sees this as a great opportunity and beats White Fang everyday to make him meaner.
During a visit in the village, White Fang finds his mother, the she-wolf, and turns back into a puppy. The she-wolf does not recognize him. White Fang becomes very aggressive and kills the other dogs in the village which have been tormenting him. .
Gray Beaver takes White Fang with him when he goes to Fort Yukon to trade. Gray Beaver trades well and has found whiskey. Gray Beaver calls whiskey "sweet water." White fang is traded to Beauty Smith in return for whiskey for Gray Beaver. .
Beauty Smith is a terrible man who tricked Gray Beaver into selling White Fang to him in return for whiskey. Beauty Smith takes White Fang into the area of dog fighting. Beauty Smith wants to make money and make it fast. He does not care if White Fang is injured or killed. All he wants White Fang to do is to fight and win. He beats White Fang all the time and hardly feeds him to make him mean and nasty. .
White Fang fights and beats the other dogs until he is put in the fight ring with another dog. He has never met a dog that is this ferocious. The dog is from the east and is a bulldog. White Fang is beaten nearly to death and is only saved by the intervention of an outsider human named Scott.
White Fang has great difficulty trusting Scott, but somewhere in his being he senses that Scott is good. He becomes Scott's protector and will allow no one to touch Scott.
Scott tries to leave White Fang with his friend in the north, but White Fang escapes and will not leave Scott. Scott realizes that he cannot leave White Fang behind.
