Wycherley's The Country Wife

The Country Wife is the third Restoration comedy by William Wycherley written in 1675. The exact date of the first performance of the play is unknown. January 12, 1675 is first appearance before royalty, indicated by The Lord Chamberlains records. Though some scenes of the play are indebted to Molieres plays LEcole des Maris and LEcole des Femmes, the play is Wycherleys own. The Country Wife has been approached with much controversy since its original publishing for its sexually explicit subject matter and moral tone. The play depicts a snobbish and anti-Puritan ideology. Structurally the play surpasses most comedies of the Restoration in dramatic situations, characterization, comic dialogue, and in satiric wit and irony. It rises above realistic comedy into the realm of intellectual comedy (Fujimura, xvii). Although it still consists of three sources and three plots, typical of the time. The three sections of plot that consist of Horner impotence scheme, the life of married Pinchwife

Love, Marriage and Gay Rights

The U.S. Supreme Court is set to tackle gay marriage in a matter of months, but legislative action this week in Rhode Island and Illinois shows that supporters aren't in wait-and-see mode. Buoyed by ballot victories in four states in November, they're now on the offensive in two more; wins would mean that more than 20 percent of Americans live in places that have approved same-sex marriage. Opponents are pushing back hard to make sure that doesn't happen, even as they express confidence that the nation's high court will rule in their favor when it weighs in on the Defense of Marriage Act and California's Proposition 8. "Everyone is looking at the Supreme Court. What happens then defines a lot of more about what happens next in the fight," said Brian Brown, president of the National Organization for Marriage." "We're gonna win that and then there's going to be a state-by-state fight, and our record on that is amazing." The scope of any Supreme Court decision

Correlation Between Food and Body Mass Index

The topic and definition of 'food desert' has been highly debated in the past few decades. It seems, though, that through steady research and statistical analysis we are coming close to finding the evidence needed to support the theory. As it stands, the USDA defines 'food desert' as 'a census tract with a substantial share of residents who live in low-income areas that have low levels of access to a grocery store or healthy, affordable food retail outlet.' The distance one would have to travel to obtain healthy food and qualify their residency as within a food desert would be one mile in urban areas and 10 miles in rural areas ("USDA"). Everything within that area would contain fast food restaurants, convenience stores and other shops with a limited variety of merchandise. Unfortunately, this leaves inhabitants within those specified zones with extremely limited options for food buying. Those inhabitants include families with low median income, people with

Women in Commercials - AXE Advertising

Daveon Logan English 101-01 Professor Myers "Clean Your Balls AXE Advertisement" The use of sexual appeals in advertising is increasingly prevalent in today's society. Women of our society are specific targets in these types of genre in everyday advertisement. Women are conditioned into dressing in a provocative manner revealing displays of various body parts of the women anatomy such as; the breast, thighs, legs, and behind. If you're in denial about this you clearly haven't paid attention to advertisements like the low-rider magazine, burger king commercials, herbal essence, and the most popular one of them all, the AXE commercials. In all of these advertisement institutions that I previously listed I will elaborate on how women are being portrayed in this advertisement over sexuality, stereotypes, and image. I will focus more towards a specific AXE commercial that has several sexual components involved. As a man I personally feel that women shouldn't be degraded for m

Discourse Analysis on Hell's Kitchen

Introduction Systemic functional linguists have long been arguing that speakers, though unconsciously, do make choices in language use, corresponding to the particular contexts, to construct different meanings; and thus, the social and cultural context can mostly be revealed through looking into these language selections. (Martin 2010) This paper hopes to justify the above ideas based on the analysis of linguistic features and the context of the text. The text being analyzed is a transcription of "Hell's Kitchen", a British cookery reality TV show hosted by the head chef Gordon Ramsay. Every episode challenging tasks are given to the contestants who strive for a place for next round of competition, until only one of them survive and win the prize – being a head chef of some exclusive restaurant. The transcribed conversation exchange between Gordon Ramsay and the contestants happens when the teams are serving appetizers. Register variables With respect to the re

Distributive Bargaining and Mediation

Introduction Dispute resolution takes into consideration the various processes used in resolving disputes between conflicting parties (Campbell 2010). Disputes usually arise in any ideal work setting. They typically occur when two or more parties disagree on something, making matters to remain unsolved. Taking this into consideration, dispute resolution mechanisms are crucial for any organization. Effective dispute resolution mechanisms can significantly help workers when it comes to maintaining healthy relations with their seniors. This is through handling workplace issues at early stages. In most cases, employees become more productive and cooperative when they are assured that their grievances are taken care of (Berger 2006). A good dispute resolution mechanism should focus on effective solution. This is because it can substantially help in avoiding costs of resolving the conflicts externally (Taylor 2002). Taking this into consideration, this paper focuses on the two methods of re

Adrian Monk and Sherlock Holmes

This world is one full of malignancy, fiends, and dismay. For these many reasons, this generation creates fictional characters that reflects their shared beliefs and different personalities in order to fight off the evil in town. These heroic characters helps society feel safe in their own skin and when they walk out of their front doors, they are not as scared as before. There are many fictional superheroes, villains, and my favorite- detectives. Selecting between all of America's well-loved detectives can be strenuous, but the two most distinct detectives have to be the famous Sherlock Holmes and Adrian Monk. Why them? And not superheroes like Batman, Spiderman, and Superman? The answer is undoubtedly because they are exceedingly intelligent, renowned, and heroic characters each in their own ways. The first point to consider is that Sherlock Holmes and Adrian Monk are both astute and sagacious men. Holmes is one of Europe's most prized possessions with his excellent reasoning and

Overview of Abnormal Psychology

1. Define mental disorder. According to Christopher A. Kearney and Timothy J. Trull, a mental disorder is a group of emotional (feelings), cognitive (thinking), or behavioral symptoms that cause distress or significant problems. 2. Define and describe the three (3) components to abnormality. The three (3) components to abnormality are: deviance from the norm, difficulty adapting to life's demand and experience of personal distress. 3. Be able to describe the biological, humanistic, cognitive-behavioral, psychodynamic, and social-cultural models of mental disorders. Scientist and mental health professionals develop perspective or models to piece together why someone has problems. These models are systematic ways of viewing and explaining what we see in the world. (i) The biological model focuses on genetics, neurotransmitters, brain changes, and other physical factors. This model rests on the assumption that mental states, emotions, and behaviors arise from brain function and oth

The Applicant by Sylvia Plath

In Sylvia Plaths poem The Applicant she writes But in twenty-five years shell be silver, / I fifty, gold. / A living doll, everywhere you look. / It can sew, it can cook, / It can talk, talk, talk (ll. 31-35). We see visual imagery when Plath discusses the life of a living doll; dolls normally do not cook or clean or even talk hence it is very surreal. Plaths use of visual imagery is used to represent how women only have duties towards the house. Plath later on transitions to auditory imagery because women can talk and gossip as oppose to working. This shows there is no sense of a real job besides being a housewife. Another way to look at this is by thinking of dolls as being controlled and owned by someone. In connection to women being like dolls the line everywhere you look implies that everywhere you looked and saw a women you would see all of them doing the same thing cooking, cleaning, talking, doing domestic duties and most importantly following the instructions of their husband

Short Story - Death by Scrabble by Charlie Fish

"Death By Scrabble" delivers a satisfying glimpse into the world of marriage, along with plenty of humor to clinch the attention of the reader. The humor is not only used for entertainment purposes but rather for leeway into the implication of the story as a whole. The story's plot revolves around a couple playing scrabble, and the humor the story delivers allows the reader to clearly understand the significance of the story and why the humor is vital to the main character's actions. The beginning of "Death by Scrabble" is particularly funny and carries a great deal of meaning to the proceedings of the story. The first line "It's a hot day and I hate my wife," This is a very interesting way to start out a story. The couple is in their early forty's, and the husband feels like his wife is holding him back from exploring the world. "If she wasn't around, I'd be doing something interesting right now." all they do is sit around the house. He has n

The Controversy Surrounding George Orwell's Masterwork: 1984

Isidor Feinstein Stone, a famous American journalist once said: "Every government is run by liars and nothing they say should be believed" (ihr). Winston Smith lives his life by this ideal and strives to rebel against his neglectful government. 1984 is a dystopian novel written by George Orwell which tells the story of Winston Smith, an outer party member of the totalitarian Ingsoc (English Socialism Party), for whom he censors news and histories: "Who controls the past controls the future: who controls the present controls the past" (Orwell, 227). He feels rebellious towards the government and dreams about the Brotherhood, a rumored organization combating Ingsoc. The novel was written in nineteen forty six and published in nineteen forty nine; it takes place in a futuristic England which is known as 'Air Strip One'. Orwell envisions the future that he feared to be realistic and portrays it in 1984. Through the examination of the sexual content, graphic violen

Messages from The Fault in Our Stars

"Forget yesterday - it has already forgotten you. Don't sweat tomorrow - you haven't even met. Instead, open your eyes and your heart to a truly precious gift - today." This quote conveys the message that the author John Green, had for teens while reading The Fault In Our Stars. Throughout the novel, John Green sent a message to teens that you should appreciate the time you have together with someone because you don't know how long you have together. "There are days, many of them, when I resent the size of my unbounded set. I want more numbers than I'm likely to get, and God, I want more numbers for Augustus Waters than he got. But, Gus, my love, I cannot tell you how thankful I am for our little infinity. I wouldn't trade it for the world. You gave me a forever within the numbered days, and I'm grateful." (Page 206). This quote emphasizes the message on how Hazel cherished

Single Focus Literary Essay - The Heart of Darkness

The pursuit of power is common in those seeking control over their lives. It can quickly become all consuming and intoxicate the person in pursuit, clouding their goals and over turning their morals. In Joseph Conrad's The Heart of Darkness, Kurtz' dying words "the horror! The horror!" describe how, through the pursuit of power and wealth, one will ultimately sacrifice themselves. Kurtz was drawn to the jungle for the ivory, but once there was given a taste of power and craved it in excess. This led to power being derived from the brute force he extends upon the Congolese, which in turn instills fear giving him ultimate control. Finally, Kurtz' physical deterioration is a direct result of his attempt to posses an unattainable amount of control and power of those around him. Kurtz began his quest for power almost immediately after arriving in the jungle. He was given a glimpse of the value and business of collecting ivory, which created a crave for a monopoly. He was aggress

Values of US Nationalism

Throughout the course of history, civilizations have been at their strongest when there are many ways in which the people are unified. This has been the case with the United States as seen in the 1800's. The challenges of slavery and sectionalism were difficult to overcome, however, due to a unified nation fostered by nationalism, our nation was able to overcome these challenges. Different Factors including political, economical and cultural changes contributed to the strong sense of nationalism in the early 1800's. There were several key political events and decisions that contributed enormously to the U.S. gaining power and respect worldwide. Tensions with European nations lead to the Embargo Act and eventually the war of 1812. Although the Embargo Act hurt the U.S. economy rather than Britain's, it cause American industry to increase. This would allow for the

How to Iimplement Internal Controls as a CEO

As the CEO of an organization your job is to set goals and put internal controls in place; and leave the management of these controls in the hands of your middle and lower management, managers. If I where the CEO of a business I would use the following outline as a guide to help me implement and manage the proper production financial, operational, and other controls needed to make the business successful. Internal controls are essential to the effective operation of many organizations. Simply put, internal controls are activities or procedures designed to provide reasonable assurance that operations are "going according to plan." Without adequate internal controls, management has little assurance that its goals and objectives will be achieved. Properly designed and functioning controls reduce the likelihood that significant errors or fraud will occur and remain undetected. Internal controls also help ensure that departments (other than the main finance office) are perfor

Ebola - Targeting the Poor

Ebola is a virus that does not attack certain people based off of their bank accounts, it's a disease that attacks anyone who comes into contact with it. It is rare for one to survive with Ebola in any country. It's major in some of the poorest countries because the countries don't have the medical assistance that America has. The level of development in a country is very important to such a deadly virus. If a country is a poorer country then more likely for more deaths to occur from the Ebola virus. More people would die in poorer countries because they don't have the things more economically developed countries have. The education that MEDC countries have are very big impact on the disease. The education MEDC countries have can help with medical assista

Ideas and Themes in The Catcher in the Rye

Analyse how the writer develops a significant idea or theme in The Catcher in the Rye. In the novel Catcher in the Rye, by J.D Salinger is about a 17 year old boy called Holden Caulfield, and his development into adulthood. This novel was unique to the time is was written, 1951, due to the fact that books almost never had a teenager boy as the protagonist, and his views upon the world, the book is narrated in a broken up and cynical voice and Holden finds many phoney things about the adult world that he tries to protect himself against. Firstly, there is the issue of Holdens childhood, his identity and the symbol of the red hunting cap. An important theme in The Catcher in the Rye, would be Holdens childhood and Salinger had shown that Holden had seen his childhood as a period of innocence and purity, and that the road to adult hood is terrifying to him. His state of mind is like a childs, because he tries to act like an adult but fails almost immediately, "Last year I made a rule that I was going to quit horsing around with girls that, deep down, gave me a pain in the ass. I broke it though, the same week I made it- the

The American Ideal - Free Trade and Political Liberties

The creation of the United States was by no means predictable. The English were not the earliest colonizers of the Americas nor did the English possess an exceptionally large piece of North American territory. It might have seemed that with their territorial advantage and early start, the Spanish colonies were best posed to take control of the new world. Nonetheless, some of the earliest Americans always felt their nation was destined for greatness. John Winthrop and the puritans believed that their superior morality would propel them to become the envy of the world1. Later Americans added ethnic, political, and economic justifications for the rise of the United States. The unique transformation the United States underwent, from colony to international power, shaped its foreign policy; starting out as an outsider to affairs dominated by Europe, the United States sought to promote self-benefiting policies like free trade while encouraging the growth of the American ideal and standing i

A Good Man Is Hard To Find - Analysis

While the concept of grace seems like the last theme in this story of murder and selfishness, it is actually represented quite frequently and as a big part of the story line. "A Good Man is hard to Find" focuses mainly on the personalities and traits of the two main characters, grandma and The Misfit. These two seem like complete opposites, which creates for a very intriguing comparison when it comes to their intelligence and capacity for grace in this short story. The Misfit displays a clear superiority in intelligence through his behavior and actions. The Misfit also has an obvious capacity for grace that exceeds the grandmother by analyzing his thoughts and conversations with the grandmother. The readers can infer that some of the grandmother's traits are being close-minded and selfish. She lies to her grandchildren, complains about how the present times cannot even compare to the superiority of the past, and manipulates her son. The grandmother displays no self-awareness and is not open to reality and the current world around her. During the conversation moments before the grandmother was shot, her words prove these previous points. She portrays obvious ignoran

Sigmund Freud - Theories on Aggressive Behavior

In Sigmund Freud's book Civilization and Its Discontents we hear Freud discuss many different terms, from that of "ego" vs. "super ego", the "oceanic" feeling along with many others. Freud, who became known as the father of psychoanalysis, has written many books throughout history and one of his pieces of writing that always seem to come up is Civilization and Its Discontents. While there are many terms that Freud focuses on throughout his book, there are also many major themes in which Freud discusses. One of those themes is the act of aggression. Aggression as a broad term in Freudian theory is that it is human instinct to act aggressive towards one another. This does apply more towards the males as he says, "men are not gentle creatures who want to be loved, an who at the most can defend themselves if they are attacked; they are, on the contrary" (Freud, 94). Creon, in the tragedy Antigone, personifies this theme of aggression that Freud discusses throughout his book by the way he shows no remorse for his niece Antigone and sentences her to death for her actio

Obesity - Sugar, Calories and Genetics

What makes people fat? Not just chubby or over weight, but morbidly obese. The obvious answer is that many obese people over eat or eat unhealthy amounts of sugars and fast foods. But can obesity also come from a person's genetic makeup? Many dietician, and myself, can argue why and how obesity can also come from a person's genes. Obesity affects hundreds of people in today's society, not only nationally but locally as well. Many of which may have genes that contain obesity. Trying to find an answer to why so many people have obesity is a huge problem in itself. While trying to find a way to locally lower obesity levels, one must know if one has obesity from genetics or from over eating. Well first things first, what causes or what is obesity? "Obesity results from a chronic disruption of energy balance," (Ravussin, Bogardus S17). Eric Ravussin and Clifton Bogardus from the Journal of British Nutrition gave a short yet descriptive definition of what obesity basically i
