Sculpting a Parent-Child Relationship

A parent-child relationship is a special relationship that has a huge effect on the way that the child will turn out. This relationship is formed through love, disappointment, and discipline. Parenting requires a great deal of adaptation. The parents want to develop a strong bond with their child but they also want to maintain a healthy relationship among themselves along with their other friendships. Through life, the bond between a child and parent will grow and expand in many ways. Whether the child makes mistakes or not the parent can't help but to love their child unconditionally. In the end the parent is always there to help mold, and sculpt the child's brain to become who they are. As for myself my parents have impacted my life dramatically. From the beginning I lived with both of my parents. From watching home movies it seemed as if my parents were happy together. They were married for eight long years. During that last year they decided they were not compatible any longer, b

Gaverick Matheny's Utilitarianism and Animals

Utilitarianism is defined as an ethical theory with the decree, "act in such a way as to maximize the expected satisfaction of interests in the world, equally considered " (Matheny, 14). In other words, do what is best for everyone, not yourself; the greatest good for the greatest number. In Utilitarianism and Animals, philosopher Gaverick Matheny argues how utilitarianism is a rational and ethical theory, how utilitarianism involves the regards of factory-farmed animals in consideration with the natural universe, and how humans' current treatment of factory-farmed animals is chastised by utilitarianism; therefore concluding that the consumption of factory-farmed produce is not ethically acceptable. Matheny's first premise behind his argument is explaining how utilitarianism is a rational and ethical theory. So readers may ask why it is considered this way. Well, Matheny asserts how his theory is higher-ranking towards other ethical assumptions, basically meaning that utilitarianism

Tsuklakhang: A Peaceful Place

Dalai Lama Temple, also known as Tsuklakhang in native Tibetan language, which means ˜the residence of the three sublime jewels' is located in McLeod Ganj, a little town at the foothills of Himalayas, Himachal Pradesh in Northern India. McLeod Ganj is also known as little Lhasa because of the continuous flow of refugees from Tibet after the Chinese occupation of Tibet. Because of the peaceful environment, beautiful surroundings and the sacred texts and sculptures, Tsuklakhang of McLeod Ganj is uniquely suited to provide tourists, locals, and pilgrims from all over the world with opportunity to generate positive energies within oneself, meditate, and accumulate merits. First, the peaceful environment of Tsuklakhang may help to create a meditational space and generate one's positive energy. With the melody of singing bowl, smell of incense, perfect moderate climate condition and the spiritually filled monks and nuns develop an environment so positive. While looking for ways to m

The United Kingdom and Legal Sovereignty

The location of sovereignty has changed a fair bit in recent years, but in order to answer this question, others must first be asked. Firstly, what is meant by the term ˜sovereignty' and is this referring to political or legal sovereignty? Sovereignty is ultimate political power and the source of all authority. Legal sovereignty is the ultimate source of legal authority. It amounts to the source of all laws and legal power. Whereas, political sovereignty refers to the location of real political power. This shows us who actually makes the political decisions. These two types of sovereignty are quite different, showing us that the concept of sovereignty may not be as simple as it seems. The position of legal sovereignty in the UK has always been in Parliament. However, various bodies have challenged this in the past and present. The European Union (EU) have challenged this legal sovereignty a lot in recent years, which has led to some very notable examples. The UK and Ireland j

Memory and Response Times

Introduction Many biological phenomena influence our daily circadian routines and affect our cognitive processes and behaviors (1 and 3). A research found memory formation and response time to be influenced by the time of day (2). However, what remains unclear is what specific periods is the peak time for memory development and responsiveness (1). Therefore this experiment will address this issue. This research will determine whether picture recognition as well as its rates is more aroused during the morning or afternoon based on The Memory Interference Test (MIT). For this study, the hypothesis states that there will be a difference in the response time and a difference in memory recognition between the morning and afternoon groups. The null hypothesis asserts that there will not be a difference in either response time or memory between the morning and afternoon groups. Materials and Methods In this experiment we will be using the online MIT, which is conducted among University of California, Los Angeles students' that are enrolled in LS23L. MIT tests for participant's memory and reaction time while taking into account their demographics variables such as habits and bac

Biology, Environment and Behavior

According to Gordon Allport, a cardinal trait is defined as a dominant characteristic of a person's personality. Neuroticism was one of the dominant characteristics of Michael Jackson. He had a high neurotic trait in which he was a very nervous, anxious, high strung, vulnerable and insecure person. His father verbally abused him by calling him ugly and made fun of his big nose. Michael mentioned multiple times during interviews that whenever his father would come into a room he was in, Michael would throw up. He loved his father but the thought of his father made him feel sad and angry to the point of getting sick. Not only did he get mistreated by his father, but also from strangers. When going door to door to proselytize about his faith he would sometimes be insulted and made fun of due to the appearance of his skin, which were later to be diagnosed as lupus and vitiligo. While recording a music video he had an incident where his head and face were accidentally burned. This made him

Autism - Seeing the World in a New Light

Seeing the world through an autistic person's point of view can be confusing yet amazing. They have the ability to relate to other living things and understand their feelings, many have a photographic memory as well. When they are younger they cannot use their diagnosis to the best of their ability but when provided with the proper tools they can reach a high level of understanding later in their life. Because they are able to live such normal lives later on, it is safe to say that autism is not a diagnosis of a terminal illness and in fact, many if the symptoms can be overcome. The first step and a big part in the process of coping with autism and its symptoms is early diagnosis. According to Serena Wieder, a psychologist and conductor of an experiment involving autistic children's progress, sensory symptoms such as auditory, tactile, and anxiety problems are the easiest to be oppressed if early diagnosis is possible. Being diagnos

Vietnam and the Tet Offensive

The Tet offensive which began at the end of January 1968 was the largest operation of the war in Vietnam to date. The Vietcong launched a massive attack on towns and cities throughout South Vietnam which stunned the US government and their commanders in Vietnam, especially as there was meant to be a two-day ceasefire for the Tet festival. Although the offensive was a military disaster for the Vietcong, who suffered massive casualties, it had major effects on US policy. The attacks on the south continued for many months and had the effect of dramatically changing US military and political policies towards the whole Vietnam War. At first Tet was a great success for the North Vietnamese. In Saigon, they took over many important buildings, including the US embassy (though only for a few hours before being repulsed by US marines), many important government buildings, the presidential palace and the airfield. It took three weeks for the US and ARVN troops to remove the VC from Saigon. The largest battle of the entire war took place in Hué, which the VC held for a month. They executed over 5,000 civilians loyal to the South Vietnamese, and when the ARVN took t

Pschoanilitic Pioneer - Karen Horney

Psychoanalytic Pioneer: Karen Horney Brandy Bruner and Rennae LaPan Indiana Tech Author Note This paper was prepared for Theories of Personalities, Psychology 2760, Session 1-2014. Abstract Karen Horney was a pioneer of psychoanalysis in the early 1900's. She was born in Germany, where she went to medical school, got married, and had three children. She studied under Freud for time, before creating her own theories. She dared to defy traditional psychoanalysis, because it was completely focused on the male point of view with no consideration for women. In the middle of her carrier she moved with her children to the United States, where she had to prove herself once again. In the end she was a professor at the Chicago school of psychoanalysis, and then the New York school of psychoanalysis where she trained new students of the profession. She published several books and papers on her theories over the entirety of her career. This paper covers just the basics and beginnings of her th

Men, Work, Children and Paternity Leave

Just because women get maternity leave there should be no reason why men should get it also. I don't believe they should because the baby didn't come out of them. Yes men should help with the child after it's born but you really cannot do much to help. I had a baby three years ago and the only thing I was able to help with was the changing of the baby. She would always feed the child. The only time I didn't help with the baby was when I was at work other than that I was taking care of it while she got some sleep. When the baby slept you could get some sleep, but that's all the baby's do is sleep and poop. One of the reason woman get maternity is so they are there to take care of the baby and be able to breast feed. Men cannot breast feed a child. If the man does take off from work he should only get a couple of days for the wife or mother to rest after she just had the baby. After my daughter was born the next day I was back at work, and then took two days off so the wife could rest.

The Alchemist by Paublo Coelho

People nowadays tend to give up on their dreams that were supposed to accomplish in life, either because of rocks on their way or because they lose inspiration. There are a few people in this world that have aspirations of achieving big things in life, and usually those are the ones that separate themselves from the rest of the world. These people are called legend makers; people who never gave up on their aspirations. In the book called The Alchemist written by Paulo Coelho he illustrates the story of a guy in which for some reason believed that what he was doing; was not enough for his life. According to the book, is it possible to live a fulfilling life without ever achieving one's Personal Legend? Coelho paints the picture perfectly of a legend maker named Santiago; he was a young courageous Andalusian shepherd who slept under a sycamore tree that grew out of the ruins of a church. Every time he slept under this tree he had the same exact dream of a child telling him to go out an

A Modest Proposal by Jonathan Swift

A Modest Proposal is a satirical essay by Jonathan Swift. Swift intentionally uses the essay to draw attention to the horrible economy in Ireland and how oppressed it was by England. Many pamphlets have been handed out during this time regarding the horrible conditions in Ireland, but they were mostly discarded. Taking advantage of this, Swift decides to come up with an absurd proposal to catch the reader's attention. The essay, or proposal, begins with Swift explaining the happenings in Ireland and then makes a pretty smooth transition into the proposal: selling poor Irish women's newborns and eating them. The mock proposal is oddly convincing, but then transitions into an ideal proposal that still has a bit of humor towards the end. Swift uses satire to get his point across, and does a great job at it. The whole idea of infanticide and the fact that Swift even mentions different food preparation styles for eating an infant can be considered risky. Cannibalism has and will probably

Stem Cell Reserach

Imagine waking up in a hospital bed. The doctor comes close to the bedside and states that you have been in a car accident and are paralyzed from the neck down. This may seem like the end of the road for you and for many others it has been; but there may be an opportunity for you to regain full control in all of your limbs. The solution to your problem may be stem cell research. Stem cell research is a highly controversial topic and many people support both sides of the argument. The research has the potential to benefit many different people in many different ways. In this essay I will explain what stem cell research is, why the general public should support the research and the united states should take advantage of the uses of the research. I will also point out the flaws in arguments opposed to this type of research. Throughout this essay I will show the benefits of stem cell research are worth suffering through the consequences and prove that the research should be legalized in

An Overview of Dungeons and Dragons

Case #1: Dungeons and Dragons Since its creation in 1974, Dungeons and Dragons has been the most popular tabletop role-playing game. Recently however, its market share has been shrinking because of the release of its 4th edition. The 4th edition was an effort to capture a part of online gaming's action oriented market, but in doing so it moved away from its storytelling roots. Now the designers of D&D, Wizards of Coast, are looking to reclaim its position as the best of the TRPGs. The 5th edition of the game will have many challenges as new competitors have risen in recent years. Company: Wizards of the Coast is responsible for D&Ds; massively successful 3rd edition, and less than spectacular 4th edition. Wizards was acquired by Hasbro in 1999, and has some of the best talent in game design. As a company they emphasize story-telling, creativity, and art. Wizards also own many other games such as "Magic: the gathering", "robo-rally", and the Star Wars roleplaying g

Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson

Speak is a story of a ninth-grader named Melinda Sordino, a rape victim. Throughout the novel, Melinda is in her own world of despair and physically cannot speak to others about her rape. As the novel progresses, she slowly starts to deal with the rape and finally accepts it and decides to move on with her life. In Speak, Anderson's use of rhetorical devices like allusions, symbolism, and metaphors and similes helps to create the texts depressed tone that later change to hopeful. Using allusions like Picasso's cubism and The Scarlet Letter help to show Melinda's internal pain. Picasso's art style of cubism helps show how Melinda feels about her life. Cubism is a style where the picture seems to be cut and rearranged in a way that does not make sense. This reflects how her life has changed. Melinda says she understands that cubism is about "seeing beyond what is on the surface" (119). This shows how she sees herself and how the other characters are unable to understand the rea

Cell Structures and Organelles (Lab)

Cell Structure and Organelles Purpose To study the structure and function of organelles in eukaryotic plant and animal cells. Procedure A Questions 1. The function of cell membrane is that defines cell boundary; regulates molecule passage into and out of cells. 2. Yes, there is an intercellular space between two cell membranes; water, nutrients, wastes can be found in this space. 3. Each membrane appears as a light layer sandwiched between two darker layers because of the phospholipids bilayer structure. The nonpolar (hydrophobic) tails will be inside which is the light layer, and the polar (hydrophilic) head will be outside which is the darker layers. 4. The role of a cytoskeleton in a living cell is to supply structure to the cell, give the cell the ability to move and ensure proper cell division during cellular reproduction. 5. Microfilaments are two-stranded (double helix) helical polymers of the protein actin. They appear as flexible structures with a diameter of 5 - 9 nm a

Methods and Principles of an Effective Teacher

"Teachers play an important role in the education of every student and have the very important responsibility of shaping the lives of young, impressionable children" (Ferroni). Therefore, teachers should work towards being an "effective teacher." An effective teacher is someone who always demonstrates caring, engaging, and encouraging attitudes in order to help students get through their education successfully. An effective teacher demonstrates a caring attitude. For example, teachers with caring attitudes go the extra mile to ensure that every student is successful no matter what. One teacher that I had is Mr. Collins. He is a very lovely teacher. He is always giving care and attention to every one of his students. One time my history teacher gave a reading assignment of approximately five pages; this is the time when I was newly arrived in America and did not have a very good comprehension of English. I was really nervous and afraid that I would not be able to re

Individualism and Immersion in Western Life

Over the long run of history, the Greek thinkers first introduced the idea of Individualism, and the Western philosophers, navigators, artistscontinued to discover and renovate this idea. Nowadays Individualism has already immersed into the western culture and plays an important role in people's life, while its opposite behavior: collectivism is slowly leaving the stage. Humans are able to survive and pass on their civilizations on this planet due to interactions with other living organisms, which is a necessary element that makes life meaningful; however, due to culture habits and different histories backgrounds, people's behavioral styles differentiate geographically. In John Donne's epigraph, "No Man is an Island": "No Man is an island; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of main." Donne expresses the idea that humans can only survive within a community instead of living alone by himself or herself. He compares individual man to an island, which stands alone in the mi

Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS)

ISIS, a self-proclaimed Islamic state, is a wealthy terrorist group that defies the reputation of the Fertile Crescent. What was once the "cradle of civilization," (Fulford) is now a hotspot of ISIS terrorist activity. ISIS has begun to make headlines in the news for the continued violence that they continue to spread throughout the Middle East. Through the combination of: barbarism, military skill, strong religious beliefs, and the twisted use of social media, ISIS has become one of the most notorious terrorist groups in the world, and the actions of this group of outlaws have prompted reactions from various world leaders. If ISIS is not combatted, they could become powerful enough to wreak havoc amongst the entirety of the Middle East. According to the New York Times, President Barack Obama considers ISIS, "A once-obscure group of Sunni militants that has now upended the Middle East and overshadowed Al Qaeda" (Cooper). After breaking away from al-Qaeda, Isis, or

Being Bullied - I Am Stronger

There are many reasons why I was bullied during my middle school years. My middle school experience was horrible, and it was not easy getting use to the students. My parents separated in year 2005. So, my mother decided to move out in her own place far away from my father. We packed up our things and we left to our new house in Middletown, Delaware. I felt very odd not having my father here, but I knew we were not that far from Delaware. He lived like 20 minutes away from here to Maryland. After a while unpacking into our new house, my mom stated that tomorrow will be my first day of school in a new environment. The scary part was that I was starting a new chapter in middle school, and will not know anyone. It was a bad middle school years because I was being bullied by six grader girl triples for my nationality, intelligence, and personality. First reason is my nationality, where I am from. The Watts and Los Angeles Riots

The Watts and LA riots Tension between the LAPD and African Americans boiled over and had its hand in starting the Watts riots. The traffic stop of Marquette Frye made the community believe excessive force was used. Once the residents of the Watts suburb witnessed Marquette, his brother and mother get arrested they went into battle mode. The Watts riot was also a result of the Watts community's longstanding grievances and growing discontentment with high unemployment rates, substandard housing, and inadequate schools. The oppression the community felt caused them to feel as if they weren't good enough for help. The unemployment rates were on purpose. This is true since many trade unions and apprenticeship programs were practices resulted in the discrimination for Negroes (Herald). When they went looking for jobs that were clearly available they found they weren't available to them. Those who went to predominantly African and Mexican American schools were not offered the same educatio

Scientific Management and Human Relations

Both Scientific Management and Human Relations have had a massive impact on the world since they were first mentioned and applied by Frederick Winslow Taylor (1856 – 1915) and George Elton Mayo (1880 – 1949). First of all, both concepts have in common the fact that they were used to increase mass production. Henry Ford's factory is one example of these means of production, a Ford car being produced by the masses for the masses. But according to Scientific Management, this can only be done with the complete standardization of the entire process of production. Moreover, timing is crucial and the human element is replaced by machines because every millisecond counts (Taylor 1911). Human relations theory, also

Biotechnology - Extending Our Life Expectancy

Biotechnology is used every day to change life, as we know it. In fact, people do not realize that early humans used biotechnology 10,000 years ago. Early humans were producing beer, wine, bread, and yogurt by means of fermentation. Biotechnology is any technique that uses organisms or their products to make a new product, to improve the life of humans or to develop microorganisms for specific scientific uses (Cooley, 2014). As early as 1500 BC humans were storing plants with certain traits such as disease resistance in order to selectively breed certain plants with certain traits to better their lives (Kruck-Langland, 1999). A huge breakthrough in biotechnology was the creation of penicillin in 1942 (Cooley 2014). This was a huge breakthrough and it save a lot of lives from disease during World War II. According to Cooley (2014) in 1980 biotechnology was used to rid the world of smallpox. Much disease such as breast cancer has been discovered through biotechnology such as breast cance

Basics of Being a Good Leader

To prepare for a job as a team leader, people usually want to impress their future co-workers or manager on what they have worked hard to get a high-class job in a business. The interviewer must show-off his or her talent, but they are frightened to even step in the building or office. People's first day on the job as a leader are tough and wise because they have to show their team that they can really lead the team to a great success. Becoming a good leader like for a professional team or business requires many skills. In order for a leader to reach their goals to be the best to succeed, they must have these qualities: positive attitude, communication, and sense of humor. One of the qualities to succeed this goal is having a positive attitude all the time. A good leader role model is like the president of the United States or chief of the USA Army. A leader takes hard work to accomplish and complete their duties, but the hard work is not impossible to do. Any leader cannot have a laz
