Title Word Count

House Made of Dawn by N. Scott Momaday

In Navarre Scott Momaday's novel, House Made of Dawn, he clearly demonstrates to readers a significant difference in the use of language between the Natives and non-Natives. Momaday refers to the Native's word as the "spoken word," and the non-Native's word as the "written word." Momaday expresses the idea that the whites (non-Natives) lack a sense of imagery in their speaking, and focus only on correct definition and proper grammar. The author makes it apparent that the words of the Natives speak volumes for themselves, and go far beyond definition. Momaday provides us the message that words are an incredibly important part of the Native culture. One of the first places we are able to see how powerful words are to the Natives is in chapter two. A key point in Momaday's writing is that he wants to show that the whites do not value language as the Natives do. Momaday uses Tosamah to speak about the Word and how it is used by non-Natives. Tosamah speaks of the white

Input and Output Analysis -The Leontief Models

Input-Output Analysis with Leontief Models Nicholas Kallem FVCC- Math 201 Abstract. Input-output analysis is useful for modelling economies. The Leontief models are economic models that show the relationships betweens different industries in an economy. The closed Leontief model and the open Leontief model represent different types of economies. It is possible to tell whether an economy is productive or non-productive by looking at the Leontief models. It is also possible to find production levels that will meet the demands of all sectors inside and outside of that economy. I. Introduction Input-output analysis is a method used to analyze the relationships between sectors in an economy. It is said that these sectors are dependent on the other sectors in the economy because in order to produce something, each sector needs to consume some kind of output from the other sectors. An individual sector of the economy will often need to consume some of its own output, as well. For example,

Theoretical Factors Assumed to Cause Crime

Abstract The purpose of this assignment is to explain, understand, and analyze the factors and forces that move the offender to commit a crime. Criminologists over the centuries have struggled while trying to understand why people commit crimes in our society. To help us understand crime, researchers such as biologists, psychologists, psychiatrists, criminologists, and sociologists have come together to develop different theories to explain this complex field. In this assignment, I will explain the theories linked to criminology including the rational choice theories, biological theories, psychological theories, social structural theories, social process theories, and social conflict theories. Also, I will explain the major factors assumed to cause crime in our society. Theories of Criminology We watch it on the news every day, we read about it in the newspaper, and many of us have been victims of it, but have we ever asked ourselves why do people commit crime? This question can have

Easy as Pie - Making the Perfect Pie

The term "Easy as Pie" portrays that pie is an easy task to have at hand. Some may think pie can be as easy as buying a pre made crust, and a can of pie filling. These people do not know how to make real pie, they are mistaken. In my own experience, pie has proven to be harder than many other baked goods. Not only does one need to prepare the perfect pie crust from scratch, ignoring the pre made pie crusts that are offered in grocery stores, the home made crust is far more superior. One must also prepare the filling of the pie from scratch and not use the canned pie filling also offered in stores, these fillings will have an artificial taste that is not recommended for the perfect pie. After having my own great deal of pie making experience, it has been easy to break it down into simpler steps and make it easier for the beginners in pie making. One must prepare themselves for a trip to the grocery store, making a list may help, either in your own head or on paper. You will n

The Roles of Friendship and Family

Family can be defined in many ways, but when you have a family like the NJROTC family, you forget all about other things and treat one another like family. I have been in the NJROTC program for four years now, and I enjoy every second of it. We have an after-school activity called the Drill Team. I am currently the overall commander of the drill team. We are always together and we spend about eight hours a week training and practicing with each other. I spend more time with them than with my actual family. I can honestly consider each and every one of them as family. We meet in the NJROTC classroom everyday after-school, our headquarters. NJROTC is a military based program, so when we are practicing and performing, we are professional.

Girls Playing Football

Why I picked why girls should be allowed to play boys sports is because I played football. I didn't see anything about girls are not allowed to play. I loved playing football. I think its fine to allow girls to play boys sports because they can do the same thing boys can do. If you look at cheerleading I think that is for girls but boys can cheer to. If men can cheer to then why can't women play men's sports? Girls have their rights and can choose if they want to play sports with boys or not. Girls could have their own sports and not include boys to make them see how it feels to be rejected. Difference in gender is not a reason for this type of discrimination. We will change things so that were treated equally. We were all created equally and that's how God created us. If boys and girls were on the same team the boys would leave the girls out, most boys think of girls as weak while they are strong. Equal opportunities should be given to all, no matter what religion they follow, which r

Film - Dystopia in Children of Men

Othello, written around 1603, is one of William Shakespeares most well regarded plays. The play, set in the city state of Venice and the island of Cyprus, recounts the demise of a respected Venetian general Othello, after falling victim to the treachery of his ensign Iago, while also being affected by his own flaws. The notions of acceptance and love, demonstrated in Othellos speech at the beginning of the play; personal gains, shown primarily through the antagonist Iago; and illusion and reality are outlined through the text, and these notions effectively display the fragile nature of human connectivity as shown by the central characters of Othello. Although he was a General by status, Othello was not fully trusted by the Venetian society due to his difference in race, causing him the need to prove his love for Desdemona and prove that he had not forced her into marriage with witchcraft. Othello does not back away from the accusations Brabantio puts upon him, but rather, begins calml

Film Overview - Empire of the Sun

This film Empire of the Sun, directed by Steven Spielberg is a story about a boy called Jamie (later Jim) who lives in the lap of luxury in the wealthy suburbs of Shanghai, China. His lifestyle is then pulled apart after the effects of Pearl Harbor when the Japanese decided to bomb the crowded streets of Shanghai. Jamie then has many challenges to face such as his separation from his parents and kin, the hardships faced in the POW camp, and his experience of death all round him. In the final stages of the movie he does overcome the challenges, but at a large personal cost. The director used many camera techniques and film techniques to express things such as: Jim being older, and the PTS that Jim suffers at the final stage of the movie (high angle to make him look weak). In the end, however, Spielberg does a great job in showing how Jamie had changed over the course of the movie, which was his intention right from the start.  Jamie, the main character, faces many challenges thr

Air Pollution in China and India

ir Pollution in China and India Global warming has been a widespread issue for many years now, and thanks to Al Gore, lots of people now know about it. Al Gore describes our climate change in his essay entitled We Cant Wish Away Climate Change as man-made pollutants getting trapped inside our atmosphere, and heating up the earth. He talks about how the pollutants have been increasing rapidly with the growth in the burning of coal, oil, natural gas and forests, and temperatures have increased over the same period. The weather will soon change, as he says that hurricanes are predicted to grow stronger and more destructive, droughts are predicted to go on longer than usually, and flooding will increase as well. According to the EPA, humans are largely responsible for any climate change that we will experience or have experienced in the past. The greenhouse gases that are causing our atmosphere to heat up have come from humans burning fossil fuels for energy. A contributor to global warmin

Macbeth and Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde

The main protagonists, Dr Jekyll and Macbeth, go through a series of changes throughout the duration of the novel and play. Their main motivation of their change is to reach their ambitions and goals but seem to collide with the social standards at the time inevitably leading to their downfall. Undeniably, both Dr Jekyll and Macbeth are admired and continuously reminded of their nobility and goodness, although actually what they appear to be is just a facade and truly they each have a manifestation of immorality deep within them. During the battle of Act 1 scene 2, we learn of Macbeths heroic acts against the Irish invaders, leading his men to victory. Macbeth is described as a valiant cousin, worthy gentlemen by none other than the king Duncan himself. This immediately gives the impression that Macbeth is not only considered to be a fantastic warrior on the battle field but also a well respected and cherished man. The use of the word cousin has deeper connotations of a relative or a c

Concepts of the American Presidency

The framers of the U.S. Constitution created a presidency of limited powers. It is also important to remember that when they created the office of the presidency, they did so without any model to go by. When the framers met in Philadelphia in 1787 to "revise the Articles of Confederation" and ended up creating an entirely new constitution, in no country in the world was there a democratically selected chief executive. What the framers of the U.S. Constitution wanted in a president: a national leader a statesman in foreign policy a commander in time of war & enforcement of the laws. The framers wanted a strong and independent chief executive [remember, there had not been one under the Articles], but they did not want to create a monarch [like the one we had rid ourselves of in the American Revolution]. The framers of the constitution also represented the "elite" and feared that if the masses elected the president they would select "demagogues" [politic

Foreign Direct Investment in the Chinese Energy Market

Recently surpassing Japan, China is now the second largest economy in the world following the United States (U.S. Department of State). This rise has taken place over the last three decades as China has slowly loosened its trade policies from a central system to a more market-orientated system (CIA). In 2009 its $4.814 trillion economy was one third the size of the United States (U.S. Department of State). This shift has allowed China to become one of the largest players in the world market. It is the most populated country in the world with a population of 1,330,141,295 billion people and a literacy rate of 93 percent (CIA). It has an inflation rate of 4.4% as of October 2010, which is relatively high compared to the rest of 2010 (see figure 1in the appendix). If this inflation rate continues to rise, this may mean that the money supply is growing faster than the rate of the economy and could negatively affect our foreign direct investment. In terms of energy opportunit

Public International Law

INTRODUCTION Public International Law governs the conduct of states and international organisations such as the United Nations (UN)1, and the relations between them. Areas of public international law include air law, diplomatic relations, the law of armed conflict, environmental law and trade law.2 Therefore, the International Rule of Law is within the context of Public International Law since the rule of law is generally supported at the international level. The United Nations is an international organization consisting currently of 193 Member States. It was founded in 1945 after the Second World War by 51 countries committed to maintaining international peace and security, developing friendly relations among nations and promoting social progress, better living standards and human rights.3 Due to its international character and the powers vested in the United Nations Charter, it can take action on a wide range of issues,4 and provide a forum for the Member States to express their

Emerging Mobile Technologies

Abstract With the increasing availability of online connectivity the business world is going mobile. Many companies are now starting to implement Mobile Device Management policies in support of Bring Your Own Device which allows employees to use their own smart phones, tablets and notebook computers. There are many concerns for companies implementing Mobile Device Management such as security, manageability, and cost. Therefore, Mobile Device Management platforms and solutions need to be easy to deploy as well as cost effective. Bring Your Own Device As the world becomes more interconnected and more mobile, businesses of all sizes are starting to implement Bring Your Own Device strategies. This saves companies money because they don't have to maintain and issue an inventory of mobile devices, instead employees are allowed to use the smartphone, tablet or laptop computer of their choice. By using this strategy companies are able to develop mobile applications to enable their employees and customers to better access company resources. Research by the SMB Group, Inc in December of 2013 indicates that 67% of small-medium business cons

Case Study of NFL Commissioner, Roger Goodell

1a. Discuss Zaleznik's basic premises and set forth the criteria he presents which distinguish a manager from a leader. In "Managers and Leaders: Are They Different?" Abraham Zaleznik presents five main characteristics that distinguish a manager from a leader. Zaleznik discusses the process of seeing a difference in a manager's and a leader's personality as a determinant of their leadership style. A manager's personality is to focus his or her energy through three common elements: (1) goals and objectives, (2) limited resources and (3) people. Managers work with people and the organization's goals, resources and structures to effectively and efficiently solve problems to prevent the contribution to the organization from being stifled or hindered. A manager's personality includes persistence, tough-mindedness, hard work, and most important tolerance and goodwill (p. 127). Managers are driven by narrow purposes and do not value an imaginative capacity for innovation or ingen

Basics of Error Analysis

Universidad Nacional Andrés Bello Professor Danisa Salinas Linguistics Leslie Schiller Abstract: Errors and mistakes are part of our daily lives, not only in everyday situations but also in the learning processes such as Second Language Acquisition. In order to improve the learning process it is needed to begin by understanding the reason behind these errors and mistakes, this way, teachers have a richer and greater insight of the student's problems in the learning process and the students with teacher assessment can successfully overcome their errors and mistakes. Just like in our daily lives, facing the problems and obstacles head on is the best way to learn. Key words: Error, mistakes, analysis, assessment, language system. Introduction: For many years we as future EFL teachers have been learning the intricate systems of the English language in order to grasp the language properly and to eventually be able to teach the language we are still learning about. We as student

Is a College Education Worth It?

Daniel, age 28 has over $40,000 in student loan debt, pays 24% of his monthly salary to student loans, and works in a job that doesnt require a college degree. It would seem that Daniels college degree was not worth it. Although soaring tuition costs are burdening college students with excessive student loan debt in an uncertain economy, the increased employment opportunities, higher salaries, and knowledge and skills that are gained makes a college education worth it. Quantitative data using employment and earning statistics is a good comparison to evaluate if a college education is worth it. According to the Bureau of Labor statistics the unemployment rates for 2013 were 6.1% for all workers, 7.5% for high school graduates, and 4% for college graduates with a bachelors degree. Based on 1997 1999 earnings the U.S. Census Bureau statistics calculated average lifetime earnings as follows: with a high school diploma $1.2 million, with a bachelors degree $2.1 million, and with a

Group Counseling for Children - Negative Interactions with Peers

Introduction Positive communication is essential for students to build healthy peer relationships and interactions. Communication skills are often learned in the home environment, daycare, or in the first years of school. Students spend a great deal of time together on a daily basis over several years and behaviors of bullying and non-bullying episodes are likely to influence each other according to Murphy & Faulkner (2010). They are learning a wide range of communication skills from teachers and students alike. Clients Situation Negative interactions can become common for students lacking the positive communication skills necessary to maintain healthy peer relationships. These interactions can affect general education classroom activity and lesson time. Students may exhibit disruptive behaviors towards peers, act out during class, become isolated or withdrawn during class time, or act aggressively towards others (bully). These behaviors will interfere with the students academic

Facebook - A Serious Invasion of Privacy

The Invasion of Privacy Through Facebook Social networks are used to connect users to family, friends and new people through mutual acquaintances and common interests. Facebook is one of the most popular used social networking sites as of today. It has been attracting people of all ages to interact with each other to exchange views about topics like politics, news, music and more. However, people are increasingly sharing more personal information on Facebook than they did in the past. Sharing personal information on Facebook can put peoples' safety at risk and it can reveal information others should not know about. The lack of physical interaction provides a false sense of security. Facebook allows others to know a person's contact information, interests, habits, and whereabouts.  The consequences of sharing this information can be dangerous because it can lead to stalking.  Stalkers can hurt others due to the accessibility and amount of personal information available. For instance, my one

Poet - Pablo Neruda

Pablo Neruda uses the extended metaphor of fruit and flies throughout the poem to explain how the industry preyed on his hometown of Chile. He describes the feeling of despair created by the United Fruit Company and felt by his native people. In the opening stanza, Neruda alludes to the Creation by saying in a great gesture God bestowed the earth to Coca-Cola Inc.90-, Anaconda, Ford Motors and other industrial companies instead of giving it to mankind to share. The tone of industrial conglomerates has always been that destiny has led them to power and to reign over the common man. By sarcastically saying that God gave the world to the industries, Neruda shows how powerless his people feel. They have no way to counteract "God's will" and just have to stand by and suffer. He goes on to say how God gave the world to the United Fruit Company much in the same way The Bible says that God gave his only begotten son to the world. Neruda plays with this similarity in order to show how his peopl

Prison or House Arrest -Solution to A Rising Prison Overflow

The United States of America houses the most prisoners worldwide. In 2008 the United States held 2.3 million prisoners. Of that number sixty percent were charged of non-violent crimes. Many of these crimes are drug related in nature. Starting in the 1970's the Federal Government started an initiative to lock up people convicted of drug offenses and other non-violent crimes. Because of these initiatives prison populations have risen by three hundred and eighty percent. To put that in perspective the United States Census data revealed that the nation's population rose only thirty-three percent during the same period. Comparatively speaking, the number of people incarcerated in state and federal facilities has grown ten times faster than the rate of our entire population. The purpose of prison is to rehabilitate criminals and help keep them from committing crimes in the future while punishing them for their wrongdoings. However this system of sending so many people to prison is obviously not working as over forty percent of convicts and convicted on ne

The Issue of Child Marriage

Child marriage and child betrothal customs occur in various times and places, whereby children are given in matrimony – before marriageable age as defined by the commentator and often before puberty. Today such customs are fairly widespread in parts of Africa, Asia, Oceania and South America: in former times it occurred also in Europe. It is frequently associated with arranged marriage. In some cases only one marriage-partner is a child, usually the female, due to importance placed upon female virginity, the inability of women to work for money and to women's shorter reproductive life period relative to men's. An increase in the advocacy ofhuman rights, whether as women's rights or as children's rights, has caused traditions of child Child marriages may depend upon socio-economic status. The aristocracy of some cultures, as in the European feudal era tended to use child marriage as a method to secure political ties. Families are able to cement political and/or fin

The American Dream in Death Of a Salesman

The idea that if one believes and tries hard enough he or she can succeed, and be rewarded with the most desirable prize; happiness, which in other words is described as the American Dream. Arthur Miller's Death Of A Salesman demoralizes the idea of this dream that everyone hopes to achieve. Miller is able to portray this dream through the delusional life of Willy Loman, a typical low income American trying to provide for his family. America in the late 19th century was experiencing an economical up rise, and Miller shows the effect of this on average individuals through Willy and his family. Through the play Willy is striving to live the American Dream, to have a better, happier life. His main focus was on personal magnetism, making that perfect impression, and having the right contacts. He was always preaching to his son's that in order to be successful, you must be well liked and that isn't the true secret to achieving the success he always hoped for. The play should be seen as

The Banking Concept of Education - Dehumanizing Students

Over the course of many years in the education system, along with the help of Pablo Freire's The "Banking" Concept of Education, it is becoming more noticeable that students have suffered from narration sickness and loss of creativity. The ability to be creative dies off in the classroom when the students submit their work for the teacher's scrutiny; thus not allowing the students to discuss and question one another, giving them the opportunity to open their minds and think for themselves rather than being "containers," according to Freire. One quality that Freire touches on is, "the teacher chooses and enforces his choice, and the students comply" (319). Where is the ability to think for oneself in the situation? This clearly shows that the education system is filling the minds of the young with copious amounts of information, dulling creativity to the point of inability to simply think for themselves. In America's education system, there is still dif
