Sexual Violence During the Sierra Leone Civil War

Throughout the ten-year long civil war, hundreds and thousands of women and girls were subject to widespread sexual violence in Sierra Leone. This means around 215,000 to 257,000 women and girls may have been subjected to such violence during this time. ("We'll Kill You If You Cry " p.25). Nicholas Kristof, journalist, claims that during the Civil War, rape was okay in Sierra Leone. Yet when the war ended and it was no longer allowed to shoot people, rape was still occurring. All women are at risk. The youngest victims reported are two and half years old claims Amie Kandah, runner of the Rainbow Centre. Sexual violence makes up much of the reported human rights abuses (Classroom Module, video). Despite the fact that sexual violence is ongoing, in post-Civil War Sierra Leone, evidence suggests that women are now becoming educated of their rights. Sexual violence can be referred to as intimate partner violence (IPV), and is classified to include sexual as well as physical violence. Arg

Caracteristics of Schizophrenia

I chose to write my research paper over Schizophrenia. It is a psychological disorder that I have always found fascinating. Approximately 20% of North Americans will be affected by a mental illness during the course of their lifetime. (MHA, 'What You Should Know About Mental Illness') More specifically, 1 in 100 Americans will suffer from schizophrenia. That means that 300,000 people in America will, at some point in their life, be affected by a very serious and highly misunderstood mental disorder. (Schizophrenia Society of America) It is a serious disorder that consumes a person's life and is nearly impossible to control. In this paper, I will talk about the definition of Schizophrenia, the symptoms of Schizophrenia, the three minor categories of schizophrenia, the Genetics of schizophrenia, sleep disorders caused by the disease, differences in the disease on different ethnicities, and insensitivity to pain. Schizophrenia is a mental disorder characterized by disorganized an

Jazz Concert Review - Ensemble I and II

The overall performance of the Drury Jazz Fall Concert on October 28 impressed me. It was different than the jazz I've listened to before because of the live setting. The band played several pieces by several arrangers, composers, musicians and bandleaders. The students performing these pieces were saxophonists, trumpeters, trombonists and rhythmists; all of which performed together beautifully. The group opened with "St. James Infirmary" arranged by Mike Kamuf. It being my first time hearing the song, it was very enjoyable to have the faster tempo, upbeat introduction to the song and then the smooth transition into a slower tempo. After the transition the viola became more apparent and it almost seemed to vary from jazz to a more classical tone. Before the trumpeter's solo the violist played a very soothing, yet upbeat solo. The texture of the ending of this song seemed a little grimy at times when the trumpet would chime in a few notes over the saxophone, almost drowning i

The Triumphs and Tribulations of Interfaith Families

Interfaith dualities among families can create turmoil when it comes to raising children or it can be a positive experience for all. "Americans are leaving behind single-faith identities. According to a 2009 study by the Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life, almost one quarter of all Americans attend religious services of more than one faith or denomination " (Miller 2013). However for some families of two or more different religions there can be conflict when deciding how to raise a child because one family member might be firmly for his or her own beliefs. In this essay I will argue, that despite all the stigmatizations surrounding interfaith families that raising a child of an interfaith identity can be a beneficial practice that can serve as an advantage for the child by expanding his or her beliefs. With the help of my sources I will first discuss why interfaith identities are an advantage, then the issues that still surround interfaith families and finally, give my own opinion along with information gathered from an informal interview I conducted on someone who was raised with both Catholi

The Neurovascular Disease and Stroke

Description Stroke is a neurovascular disease that occurs when the blood flow to a region of the brain is cut off. When deprived of oxygen, the brain cells begin to die. Depending on where in the brain this happens different abilities that are controlled by that area are affected such as memory and motor control. Based on the severity of the stroke the lasting effects could be anywhere from temporary weakness of a limb to being permanently paralyzed or lose of the ability to speak. Some of those affected by stroke recover fully but more that 2/3 of victims will be disabled in some way. There are two different types of stroke, hemorrhagic and ischemic stroke. Of the two types of stroke hemorrhagic is much less common, accounting for a mere 15 of strokes, but is much more deadly as it is responsible for 40 percent of all stroke related fatalities. The two types of hemorrhagic stroke are Intracerebral and subarachnoid. Intracerebral is the more common of the two and occurs when a blood

Erasmus Against Catholic Church

Question To what extent did the works of Erasmus undermine the Church? " Response Desiderius Erasmus was one of the most significant Christian humanists in the 15-16 centuries. He was born in Rotterdam in 1467 and known classically as Erasmus of Rotterdam, whereas his real name was Gerrit Gerritzoon. According to his lifestyle, he did not have an outstanding wealthy life; conversely, he consumed a poor meal, slept in the uncomfortable hard bad and so on. But Erasmus had a huge knowledge of classical literature and writings of the early Church. Through his works, such as "Adages "(1500), "Handbook of a Christian Soldier "(2003), "Praise of Folly "(1511), "New Testament in Greek "(1516), "Freedom of the Will "(1524), he expressed his learning and interests, and reflect every aspect of Christian Humanism But there is a controversy whether Erasmus was a friend or an enemy of the Church. This essay will evaluate to what extent did the works of Erasmus undermine the Church. On the one hand

Fear and the Danger Barrier

Fear is a chain reaction in the brain that starts with a stressful stimulus and ends with the release of chemicals that cause a racing heart, fast breathing and energized muscles, among other things. Fear is an emotion that everyone at some point in life feels, whether is fear of a spider, death or even life itself, we have all felt it. The existence of fear leads us to put up walls or barriers. For example when someone is afraid of being hurt by other people emotionally they stop themselves from opening up and connecting with others. In Natalie Gordimer's Once Upon a Time she tells a story of a family living in a society where there is anarchy and Riots all around, so to protect themselves they install an alarm system, burglar bars on the windows, put up a brick wall and installed razor bladed coils all around the wall.In the story the reader sees the family put up all these safeguards to protect their home and possessions so much so they are unable to see the beautiful neighborhood t

Overcoming My Educational Obstacles

There are a few of obstacles that interfere with my education. The choice is mine whether I let these obstacles break me or make me. There are three prominent things that currently interfere with my education, one of them being the College Placement Test, my finances, and managing my responsibilities while doing well in school. By far these challenges have limited my ability to prioritize my educational goals. Although these are all matters I know I can overcome, I find they often hinder my focus on my education. The College Placement Test has been very challenging for me. Reading and math are not my strongest subjects and not being able to understand the material has caused me a lot of frustration. I took the test more than three times within one week, all three tests came back with the same results. As a result, I have to work my

Katherine's Speech in The Taming of the Shrew

Hortensio's declaration that the "curst shrow" Katherine had been tamed is astonishing to all the audience in the final scene of The Taming of the Shrew. After hurling furniture, throwing fits and attacking her sister, Katherine delivers a speech that praises obedience and scorns rough behavior. Supposedly, this speech demonstrates Katherine's obedience to her husband, Petruchio, who has forced her to realize the error of her previous behavior. Genuine submission, however, is an unlikely characteristic for Katherine to adopt. A complete reformation becomes more improbable after an analysis of the scenes surrounding her "taming." Several of these engagements confirm the excellence of her acting ability. This evidence suggests her ability to impersonate the character of a tamed shrew. Her dialogue during these moments of obedience seems to mirror the language Petruchio uses earlier to tame her, implying that Katherine employs Petruchio's own misleading strategies agai

Creative Writing Diary - Heart of Darkness

Creative Writing I will be adopting the voice of Kurtz in the form of diary excerpts, lucidly revealing the transition and transformation from sane and civilized to mad and savagely. Kurtz' intended is a major symbol of sanity and also functions as his moral compass. After a prolonged period of time absent from his intended and the centre of morality and civilization (Brussels, Company Headquarters), the wildness inevitably consumes him and thus consumes his sanity resulting in madness due to primarily imperialism, and greed. His intended is also a major symbol in my essay because she justified his decision for lucrative enterprise and colonial growth, consequently when she is absent from him for this protracted period of time, he begins to question certain actions and decisions as he is overlooking what was intended. Day 1 Irretrievable time will go by until I sojourn in the Congo with great plans for wealth, power and fame in obtaining a substantial amount of ivory, moreover the abi

Synthesis of Sources on Anarchy in Action

Anarchism poses an ideal form of society in which popular rule reigns supreme. However, due to systematic flaws and external pressures, the philosophy has fallen short in practice. While examples of anarchism in action have existed, these failures raise questions on the validity of the organization of the system and what characteristics are needed for the success of an existing anarchist society. Experts argue that the political practice of anarchism promotes human welfare by inducing popular control of society through an emphasis on the values of liberty, solidarity and egalitarianism in the structure of society itself. For example, French Anarcho-communist author Daniel Guerin outlines the manner in which anarchism would organize the workplace by the form of worker self-management known as syndicalism. Similarly, American Anarcho-communist author Eddie Conlon stresses the potential of decentralized universal healthcare as shown in revolutionary Spain based upon mutual concern without

The USA Patriot Act and the Violation of Human Rights

The ten years between 2000 and 2010 mark what must be considered one of the most important, transformative and controversial decades in the history of the United States of America. Immediately following the contested election of George W. Bush, the country was attacked by Islamic terrorists on September11th, leading to the invasions of Iraq and Afghanistan-two wars that would indebt the country and last throughout the duration of the decade. The election of President Barack Obama was seen as a marked shift in American attitudes both domestically and abroad, but even his presidency was defined by a severe economic crisis and a succession of embittered political debates. Ultimately, this decade will likely be remembered by the foreign policies of presidents Bush and Obama, and the wide-ranging implications of these policies abroad. Many critics, in fact, point to some of the blunders of these policies-such as Guantanamo Bay and the Iraq War-as severe violations of human rights. However,

Sweet Child O' Mine by Guns N' Roses

The song I chose as one of my favorites is "Sweet Child O' Mine," by Guns N' Roses. I listened to the audio using a pair of MDR-ZX100 Sony Studio (Stereo) headphones. Engineering Slash, the guitarist of the band, used a lot of reverb on lead guitar track in the initial recording, giving it thick sound. The reflections and ambience of the reverb sort of creates its own version of a delay sound. I don't think any actual delay was used on the lead guitar intro in this song, however it might seem that way due to the heavy reverb. He also used effects pedals I am sure, but am not certain what his settings were. The vocals, drums and bass also have a pretty heavy reverb on them as well. Because so much heavy reverb is used, the recoding as a whole is very wet sounding. This helps the instruments sit more back in the mix and blend together more nicely so that one isn't out front much more than the other. The engineers panned the different instrument tracks so that the song is more open and I can hear little guitar riffs come

Here is a list of qualities that I think all of us should look for in a friend. These are also qualities that we should be developing in ourselves.  In order to have good friends, you need to be a good friend first! So let's get started on quality number 1. Trustworthy Finding a friend that is trustworthy is like finding a gem. A person who is trustworthy is a person that you can trust and be confident in. Critical Film Overview - Winter's Bone

In the movie Winter's Bone, Daniel Woodrell demonstrates that being a good family member does not always mean acting like one. The Dolly clan, a group of wayward, backcountry folk all related in one way or another, lives in a shoddy town nestled in the Ozark mountains. Ree Dolly, the protagonist of this country noir novel, is the daughter of the notorious "crank" cook, Jessup Dolly, who has recently gone missing. Jessup has disappeared from home numerous times before and no one has ever bothered to question where he is, but this time is different. This time Jessup is in trouble with the law and it is up to Ree to find him or else she could lose her family's house and land. On her quest to find her father, Ree quickly learns that asking questions of the austere Dolly clan can be a fatal mistake. The Dollys will stop at no end to protect the family's name and Ree, unfortunately, becomes the target of their tough love. Teardrop, Ree's meth-addicted uncle, is the first person s

Our Campus and the Noblest Library

Before starting my first college semester my sister gave me a tour of campus to show me around so I could be familiar with where my classes were before school started. As we were walking through campus she would point to a building and explain what classes were taught in it. As we were passing by Noble Library a small smile came upon her face as she explained to me how much time she has spent in this building. According to her it was her "best friend" through college and has always been a great place to settle down for a few hours to study. Noble Library, located on Tyler Mall at the Tempe Campus of Arizona State University, houses information on everything from astronomy and physics to medicine and mathematics. This library includes approximately 425,000 volumes; 1,200 of which are print as well as thousands of electronic journals. This building is named in honor of Daniel E. Noble, a technological innovator and inventor who is called the "father of Arizona industry.

Facing the Life Ahead of Me

Nervous and stirring, my soul is now as tight as a string on a violin, but is also capable of providing dulcetly melodious music to share with you. Summer has sneaked off through the gaps of my fingers, disappearing before I had a chance to clench it. While I am stressed because of the academic challenges of this coming school year, I am also really looking forward to spending at least a year with you as a humble student and a friend of yours. Hopefully at the end of this year, both of us will find it meaningful and worthwhile. 1776 - Adapting Film to a Broadway Musical

Nominated film adaptation of a hit Broadway musical about the First Continental Congress and the events in Philadelphia surrounding the signing of the Declaration of Independence. This film was nominated for both, the Golden Globe Award for Best Motion Picture – Musical or comedy and the Academy Award for Best Cinematography. 1776 is an example of a motion picture that shows you can still create an entertaining, humorous, and dramatic work of art without straying from the histories roots by displaying numerous events that were recorded in our nation's history. On May 8th of 1776, the first continental congress meets together in Philadelphia to vote on the matter of "whether or not to grant General Washington's request that all Rhode Island militia be required to wear matching uniforms"1. Congressman of Massachusetts, John Adams, runs down into the Pennsylvania State House and displays his disgust in the lack of seriousness of the issues that the congress must vote on.

Letter from Sir George Buchanan

17 March 1918 Most Highly Esteemed Sir, I write to you with an update on the current situation in Petrograd. Last November, the Bolsheviks led a massive revolution against Kerensky's provisional government. From my office, I witnessed the Red Guards forcibly seizing control of all the government buildings, communication lines and railway stations. For two days, gunshots penetrated the air and attacks were launched against government officials, prompting Kerensky to flee in panic. Now, they have full control of the city and have established a new Communist government under Lenin. It is astounding how a second revolution could ever take hold; ever since the monarchy was overthrown, we a

Simon Bolivar - Making a Difference in Latin America

Simon Bolivar was born in Caracas, New Grenada (now known as Venezuela), on July 24, 1783, son of prominent military Colonel Juan Vicente Bolivar y Ponte and Concepcion Palacios Blanco. He came from a wealthy family who earned their money from rich gold and copper mines in Venezuela. Bolivar lost both of his parents at a rather young age and was forced to live with relatives by the age of 12. He was privileged to have befriended the headmaster at an elementary school where he studied writing, arithmetic, history, religion and Latin. At the age of 14, Bolivar joined the Battalion in the White Militia in the Aragua, a battalion that his own father headed up years before as the Colonel. It is apparent that Bolivar was an intelligent and well respected young man as he was promoted to Second Lieutenant within his first year of service. Bolivar moved to Spain in 1799 following the death of his parents where he went to further his education. It is clear that education was important and i

Women, Work, and Protest in the Early Lowell Mills

Booming in America, industrialization boosted the economy and social status of various areas, mainly the Northeast throughout the 1800's. Throughout Massachusetts and mainly along the Merrimack River, many large mills were built before 1840. The construction of these mills strengthened the economy by creating new jobs and in turn, attracted many workers. Industrialization was most prevalent in a town called Lowell, a mining town. Consisting of mostly female mill workers, they lived together in boarding houses across from the factory. Their bonds that formed as a result of their close living quarters, similar job, and same social status caused a strong united feeling in the community, which would contribute to the early start of the formation of labor unions. Spending all their time with fellow workers, most women with an occupation at the mill would work and socialize seventy-three hours a week with their fellow workers. Through long periods of time spent together, the
