Prediction of Ground Vibrations During Pile Driving

1 INTRODUCTION Pile foundation is widely used whether if the bearing capacity of soil layer under the building could not support the building and the force itself (Sardjono HS, 1988), or if the bearing capacity of the soil could support the structure of the building and the force on the depth from the soil surface > 8 m (Bowles, 1991). However, pile driving inevitably causes varying degrees of ground vibrations, which both may damage the surrounding structures and environment comfortable. Regarding to that reason, this study analyze the ground vibration during pile driving using finite element method. The result is peak particle velocity (ppv) as the parameter that used to analyse ground vibration. It shows the level of vibrations from several points and used to determined allowable ppv as a priliminary based before the constructions, hence it will help geotechnical engineers in designing and executing driven pile installation so as unjust restrictions can be avoid. 2 2-D FEM

The Concept of Home in Beloved

"How does it feel To be without a home Like a complete unknown Like a rolling stone?" - Bob Dylan Feminists have discussed the concept of the home as the earliest school of social justice, a place where people foment their egalitarian values. Communitarians, on the other hand, have envisaged the home as the realm of personal solace where people equip themselves with the skills to belong as prosperous members of a society. Both understandings emphasize the role of the home as a repository for the hopes and dreams and fears of its inhabitants. Thehome is less a physical edifice than it is a spiritual one. It is constructed not with wood and tools and concrete, but with the sum of the emotional strength of its indwellers; it is not a geographical location, but a "space" for the mind and body to gather strength, rest and formulate strategy. In this way, "home" is not a utopian or dystopian "destination," but a very literal extension of the self – a per

The Journey of a Plastic Bag

The journey a plastic bag takes from any convenience store is beyond anyones imagination. The efforts before and after the usage are far too advance for the simplicity of this convenience carrier. An excessive and unnecessary amount of energy is used to produce and demolish plastic bags after their short span of usage. Plastic bags have far exceeded their welcome in our environment as they take over oceans, landfills, cities, urban streets and the stomachs of animals. Plus, the amount of labor as a result of their daily destruction is something our country cannot afford. The dependency they create on natural oil is out of our countrys reach. As plastic bags continue to be produced, our environment and economy are going to suffer. If our government does not take forth actions to ban plastic bags, our country will continue to suffer through our natural resources, environment and oceans. Every day, we witness plastic bags that have been traveling the earth for decades. If the Pilgrims h

Basic Human Resource Requirements

Beginning a business is an extremely nerving task, there is a large amount of risk involved and statistics that suggest the business will fail. Many business' that open each year fail to even last as long, there is no guarantee for success nor guarantee that the journey will be easy, but for small business owners preparing and understanding the physical resources required to begin the business can make a large amount of difference. When considering the physical resources that will be required to begin a business it's easy to underestimate the type of items required plus costs, careful consideration needs to be used to acknowledge if the resource is needed or resource is natural/existing. All resources should have upmost value to a business in the early stages and all costs, potential suppliers and timing/need of the resource should be identified. Waingaro thermal spa and eco lodge is a business that is in high need of resources to begin the business including; Equipment/Property, furniture, office essentials, fixtures and stock. Some resources will be natural, while others are existing and many will need to be purchased. There are resources that aren't fully required

An Overview of Tide Pools

Tide pools may look like nothing more than puddles of water lining the edges of beaches, but they are actually home to many types of adaptable species that have attracted the attention of many people, including marine biologists and naturalists. What makes these types of animals unique is the fact that they must be able to adapt to constant changing of their environment, such as changes in the temperature and amounts of oxygen present. The location of the tide pools used in this experiment are found on the shores of Washington State, in the northwestern United States. In these tide pools there are nine species present, and consist of three producers, three sessile consumers, and three mobile consumers. The three species that are grouped as producers are Nori Seaweed (Porphyra), Black Pine (Neorhodomela), and Coral Weed (Corallina). These 3 species are types of algae, and considered producers because they all produce carbohydrates from inorganic carbon, in other words make their own f

Reconstruction of the Desert Heart

Australia is the driest inhabited continent. Two-thirds of Australia is dry and the centre is hot. But it is a place full of spectacular natural wonder and variety of wildlife which give an amazement endless. The first European explorers found tall grasses, spinifex. It is the only grass that can grow in the driest soils. The grassland cover a quarter of the continent which have strange red mounds. Termites, the only animals that can eat spinifex. They have modified an inedible grass into their bread. By chewing it up with spit and soil, termites can turn spinifex into hardening wall like brick. Inside the mound, there are also another crawling animals like spiders, centipedes, and geckos. While outside the mounds, there are millions of low-energy lizards which very nearly can survive with less food and water. There are also phenomenal lizards, namely the thorny lizards. They only eat little black ants, 1.000 a day. In the centre of the continent, aboriginal have survived for over 40.000 years. They thought how to make the desert work with them. They use fire stick to burn off the spinifex to grow edible plants there. The scorched land is a start

Perfume and the Scent of a Woman

It is safe to say that most women like to smell good. Perfume holds the power that woman are what they wear. Women's magazines everywhere show ad after ad about perfume and what she will be able to do once they wear it. However, not all women have the same tastes and interests. In order for perfume ads to be successful, advertisers cannot just use one kind of formula to appeal to attract women. Sporty women compared to high class conservative women probably do not have the same taste in perfume, as would a teenager compared to a 50-year-old woman. Advertisers must use a variety of tactics to sell women's perfume in order to appeal to the different types and personalities of today's women.      Many perfume ad campaigns nowadays use simple women doing simple things but clearly enjoying it. The ad campaign for Clinique's perfume lines is a very good example of this. In the May issue of Teen People, the ad for Clinique's perfume, "Happy," shows a woman wearing a sleeveless

The Hero in The Lord of The Rings

In The Lord of The Rings, Frodo Baggins, a simple hobbit, is seen by many as the hero of the story. A hero is defined as "a person who is admired for great or brave acts or fine qualities " ("Hero "). Most heroes in literature follow a proven pattern, or cycle. Joseph Campbell, author of The Hero with a Thousand Faces, discovered such a pattern, as well as a collection of archetypes, "running through hero myths and stories from around the world " (Hamby). Using these patterns, Frodo can truly be seen as a hero. Matthew Winkler compares this cycle to a clock, with each hour representing a different point in the hero's journey. Just like a clock, "the journey begins and ends " at twelve, "in the hero's ordinary world " (Winkler). At one o'clock, the hero receives a message or challenge that sets the journey in motion. Frodo's inheritance of the One Ring from his uncle Bilbo is his "call to adventure " (Winkler). The next point on the journey occurs when the hero receives assistance in h

Chemistry Assignment - Fuel Cells

INTRODUCTION A  fuel cell  is an electrochemical device that converts the energy in chemicals into electricity. A battery is also an electrochemical device that converts chemical energy into electricity, but there is a limited supply of chemicals in a battery, so eventually the chemicals are all consumed and the battery no longer supplies electricity. In a fuel cell, however, the chemicals can be replenished, so the fuel cell can continue to produce electricity. In a proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) the fuel used is hydrogen and the byproduct of the PEMFC is clean water. A big advantage of fuel cells is that they do not create pollution. In addition, the fuel cell has no moving parts so it doesn't break down like an internal combustion engine can. This means that there could be fewer breakdowns for a car that uses a fuel cell, compared to a car with a standard internal combustion engine. The fuel cell was first demonstrated by William Grove in 1839. The first thing that Grove did was to pass a current through water and separate water into its components: hydrogen and oxygen. This process is called  electrolysis.  He then wondered if electrolys

Peasant Desperation and the French Revolution

The quote "Life, liberty, fraternity or death " completely personifies the French Revolution. Men and women from all over the country of France rallied together to fight the injustice and cruelty of the French aristocracy. Their actions contributed to the fall of the aristocracy, although this allowed for a much crueler and more devastating system to arise. The French Revolution is the quintessence of a revolution's cyclical nature. The Revolution began with the injustice of ignorant rulers and ended with the maniacal tyranny of a paranoid revolutionary. The French society was highly based on social standing and occupation. The system was classified into three estates. The first estate consisted of the aristocracy and nobility of France. 130,000 French citizens were classified into the third estate and they owned twenty percent of the land in France. This estate included the French king, Louis XVI, and queen, Marie Antoinette. The second estate consisted of clerics and others heads of

The Iranian Revolution of 1979

The name Iran is derived from the word "Aryan ", meaning one nobleman or king. Before being called Iran, the country was known as the Persian Empire. The Persian Empire was ruled by a series of kings called Shah's for 2500 years. Because of its closed off past, the Persian Empire was under a feudalism system that was suffering from poverty. Because of its strategic location between Asia, Africa, and Europe, the Persian Empire struggled to keep its national sovereignty and stay independent during a period of European Imperialism during the outset of the 20th century. In August of 1907, an agreement was made in which Russia took control of the south while Britain took control in the north. After World War I ended, Iran found itself in a predicament. The Qajar dynasty, a regime that had been in control prior to the war, was overthrown. Reza Shah, a key leader who played a crucial role in the development of modern day Iran, replaced the government. Reza Shah introduced modern education, i

America and The Great Gatsby

F. Scott Fitzgerald saw America in the 1920's as a huge contradiction. In a country where you were supposed to be able to have endless possibilities to live out the "American Dream", it was never reachable. To make matters worse, the attempts to test social mobility led to a greater cost of moral and ethical values. Fitzgerald compares and contrasts the social realm of the twenties by using the dwellers of East and West Egg. Tom's East Egg nature, filled with carelessness and pride and also Jay's West Egg nature filled with futility and extravagance. Fitzgerald deliberately represents the social classes of the East and West people to show the over compensation for snob value, the ineffectiveness of social mobility and the inevitable decrease of morals. "Leisure held the first place at the start...came to hold a rank very much above wasteful consumption of goods... From that point onward, consumption has gained ground, until, at present, it unquestionably holds the primacy." This q

Bacon's Rebellion

Introduction: "We identify the flag with almost everything we hold dear on earth, peace, security, liberty, our family, our friends, our home. But when we look at our flag and behold it emblazoned with all our rights we must remember that it is equally a symbol of our duties. Every glory that we associate with it is the result of duty done. " The American flag represents more than just symbolic freedom, equality, and strength. We as Americans take pride in red, white, and blue and live for our history. America has created its own history since its discovery with the arrival of Christopher Columbus in 1492. Since then America has established Justice, a Constitution, and opportunity to its inhabitants. Throughout history there have been many significant turning points that have allowed our country to develop all of its characteristics that are still valid in our current time period. Three major events that have a great importance not only to history then but to our existing history tod

Concepts of Education Reform

America is faced with a challenge detrimental to the future success of the nation: education reform. This challenge was brought about by the idea that America's public school system is failing as a whole. There are many opinions as to why the system is not performing as it once had. These differing opinions have attributed to a variety of reform methods. The methods span form implementation of local policies to federal mandated policies. No matter the method, it is generally agreed upon that a change is desperately needed. With the future of the nation heavily reliant on the success of the younger generation and the role they take in society, education is one of the most important tools they can acquire. Scrutiny over public school systems is attributed to implementation of controversial legislature such as the No Child Left Behind act, reform of teacher education programs and qualification, and reform of the system as a whole. One of the most controversial issues in the battle for r

Catcher in the Rye - The Adolescent Holden

The Catcher in the Rye When one's desired image for life does not align with reality, it causes one to be depressed. Such is the case with Holden Caulfield, the main character in JD Salinger's 1951 novel The Catcher in the Rye. Holden is a lonely adolescent who is reluctant to accept the changes that come with life. As Holden starts to realize that change is inevitable, he becomes more and more unhappy with the world around him. Holden's battle between his dreams and reality causes him to feel despondent about his future. It is Holden's fear of children losing their innocence, loneliness, and unwillingness to accept change that cause him to be depressed. Holden is a teenager who fears the idea of children losing their innocence and growing into adulthood. On Holden's journey through New York City, he encounters several situations that illuminate his hatred for what adults turn out to be, which contributes to Holden's fear of children becoming corrupt. As Holden sleeps in Mr. Antoli

The Loneliness of A Women - Anne Sexton

Loneliness of A Woman There are three distinct ideas in the three stanzas of Anne Sextons "Her Kind. " By analyzing the first stanza as a period of darkness, the second as a stage of searching for a sense of composure, and the third and final being a very personal realization, it becomes evident who our speaker really is. Sexton expresses her poem through an ABABCBC pattern, which is different then your normal six or eight line stanzas and is instead seven. At the end of the three stanzas, she uses repetition to get her point across and to give a more personal feeling to what she is saying. She says, "I have been her kind "(7,14,21) and this is her relating herself back to everything she is talking about in the poem. She changes the second to last line in every stanza but only a little to summarize what she was saying in that specific stanza. That makes those three lines The first stanza straight from the start gives off a dark feeling as you read it. Our speaker calls herse

The Rebellions of Upper and Lower Canada

There are similar connections between the rebellions in Lower and Upper Canada and the seigneurial system. As described in the introduction of chapter nine, both these events were landmarks in defining the colonial period. And these events impacted the future of the places involved. From the ninety-Two Resolutions, in "Journals of the House of Assembly of Lower Canada ", it describes resolutions that were decided. Though some were more fundamental others seemed a bit hostile. The ninety-two resolutions included demands for an elected Legislative Council. And, the French just wanted more things done "their " way. It states that the government should take more interest in what people need , not just what the rich want. And as this article sets out that still was not approved. Resolution 49 seemed quite sad. It stated that should not "be exposed to receive insult from any man whomsoever ". It's interesting to think just the state some of these people were in. Lots of people would have gon

The Catholic Church and The Canterbury Tales

The Catholic Church is seen as such a holy place and when most people think of it, they think of a sacred place with holy people, especially the ones who devote their lives to the church like priests, monks, and nuns. They are typically described are perfect and follow every rule of God. These holy beings should be the examples on how to live good catholic lives. They are not expected to be perfect but people do see them as the standard and look to them as examples on how to live their lives in a Christian orderly fashion. Now a days, few times it is heard of in the news where a priest or any other church member is doing something that contradicts their religious duties. Like a priest or any other church member doing something that is frowned upon for their way of living. A priest for example, having an affair or a deacon stealing money from the church, these are examples of church corruption. However during the medieval times it was not uncommon for priests or deacons to do things lik

Britain, the Colonies and the Stamp Act

There were many parliamentary measures that were affecting most seriously the North American colonies from 1764 to 1774.The parliamentary measures that could be consider as most important ones during this 10 year period are: Sugar, Currency, Stamp, Quartering, Declaratory, Townshend, Tea, and Coercive Acts. By the cause of these parliamentary measures there was a push back from the colonies either by not obeying the law or by protesting against them. Some of the measures such as the Townshend and Stamp Acts were cut back because of the colonies unwillingness to obey them. The measures contributed to high political tensions between the Colonies and England. England had to be able to sustain their colonies so, The Parliament, desiring  revenue  from its North American colonies, passed the Sugar Act law specifically aimed to raise colonial money for the English Crown. The act increased duties on non-British goods shipped to the colonies. The  Currency Act regulated  paper m

Experiment - Heating Baking Soda

The results of the heating baking soda experiment were similar within the class. No results appeared within the first few minutes of heating the baking soda, but as the experiment progressed, droplets of liquid formed mostly on the upper half of the test tube, which formed condensation. Soon after this condensation appeared, bubbles starting coming out of the GCA inside of the GCB. As the stream of bubbles started to be more constant, the water level began to lower as the gas was pushing it out of the GCB. Different apparatus were quicker in the forming of gas as some the GCBs were full with gas while others were still mostly filled with water. One possibility of a flaw that may have occurred in the final results was not allowing the GCB to completely fill with gas. It was cut short due to the experiment taking more time than expected. Movies the Shaped My Life

There are many ways in which film has affected and shaped my life. I did not know much about myself and other aspects of the society until I watched a couple of films. I am an introvert and I find pleasure learning and doing things on my own. Watching films has shaped how I view the world and people around me. Similarly, there are a number of films that I have enjoyed watching, making me follow their themes to the end. Such films have provided important themes about gender, race, ethnicity, sexuality and other social identities. This paper explores a number of films, their ˜messages' and how they shaped my life. In terms of gender roles, Guido is concerned that he is not able to love his women. That illuminates the issue of love and gender. The person involved is a man. Love is seen to originate from men. This part influenced me as I found myself loving for the first time that love could not pass me. The film titled ˒ ½' changed my perception towards myself. After watching i
