Advertising: Alcohol - All Fun and Games

Exposure to alcohol advertising is an everyday occurrence. Alcohol advertising is persuasive not only to adults but to those who are too young to buy and drink alcohol legally. Parents and peers have a large impact on youths decisions to drink, but marketing also has a great impact by influencing the attitudes of children and their peers, as well as helping to create an environment that promotes underage drinking. Alcohol companies spend billions of dollars on advertising their products through the most powerful tool, the television, seeing, almost everyone who lives America has a television. Alcohol is the most commonly used drug in the United States. Alcohol companies generate more than sixty-five billion dollars a year in revenue, and spend way over one billion dollars a year on advertising alcoholic beverages. With all this knowledge alcohol companies and marketing industries still claim that the effect is minimal. I strongly disagree with this claim and believe that alcohol compan

Graduation Requirements

Since the first moment I walked through my high school main entrance, it was nothing but intimidating. A whole new three story brick building with high ceilings and hallways that looked identical every corner you turned. Walking into a school filled with 1,200 other student, I couldn't help but feel insignificant. On the first day the entire freshman class, which makes up roughly about 400 students, are packed into a enormous theater inside the school. Even with the entire freshman class packed in the theater, it was still only less than half full. I sat with friends all from the same middle school. Me and everybody else were looking around trying to catch a glimpse of other kids we might have know as we eagerly waited for somebody to walk up to the lonely microphone on stage. Ten minutes went by of socializing, asking how each others summers were and what they have been doing, until four formally dressed people stepped up on to the stage. With a short pause the once buzzing theater

The Choral Ode - Analysis Essay

The people of Thebes are struck with a plague and are told that if they find the man who killed Laius, their former king, the plague will finally end. A blind prophet, Tiresias, has accused their current king, Oedipus, of being the murderer. Upon hearing this, Oedipus is outraged, and the townspeople are concerned. The townspeople are represented by the chorus in Sophocles's plays and during this particular moment in the play, they are simply talking out loud amongst themselves. This choral ode serves to show how the townspeople feel towards the gods, the plague, and the accusations made against Oedipus. Through the chorus, Sophocles employs literary devices such as imagery, repetition, and shifting of tone to convey how the townspeople feel in this current situation. As the choral ode progresses, it is seen that the people still have faith in their honored king, despite what the prophet has said. Sophocles begins the ode with a series of rhetorical questions that serve to immediately

Opening their store in Burlington, Vermont in 1978, they immediately began interfacing with the local populace by hosting a free summer movie festival, projecting movies on the wall of their renovated gas station. In 1985, they introduced New York Super Fudge Chunk ®, a flavor suggested by a writer from New York City

Later an orangutang floats close by on a ton of bananas and hops aboard the lifeboat. The hyena tak

Religion in Voltaire

Religion was a means to achieve something for everyone, while countless were abused and used because of their religious motives; religious figures instead took advantage of their power and acted against others making it more like a monarchy. The King and all the heads of families did as they wished and did not mind wasting money on many luxuries without thinking of their people, they "sing solemn canticles of thanksgiving every morning, accompanied by five or six thousand musicians." Also El Dorado lords lied about their actions and principles. People there believed there was no need for prisons or courts because they lived in a trance of continual gratitude. They thought that there was a god that looked after them and that there was nothing to worry about. Catholicism is the most common religion in Voltaire and is seen with respect but challenged nevertheless. Voltaire used satire to describe many religious figures' attitudes and t

Prison and Lawbreakers

A person who violates or breaks the law is classified as law breakers, criminal offenders, perpetrator, convict, jailbird and etc. The right retribution for villainous crime such as rape, robbery, murder, kidnapping and other crime of extreme violence is imprisonment. According to the International Centre for prison studies, total count of prisoners in Malaysia in year 2007 was 50305, whereas in June 2013 it has decreased to 39,144(("international centre for prison studies"). This has proven that imprisonment is one of the best ways to reduce crime rate in Malaysia and any other country. Therefore, a convict should be imprisoned for his or her offence. First of all, law breakers have to face their consequences for their offence in the prison. Life as a prisoner will be very miserable and they will not tend to repeat the mistake again. It is totally different from the outside world and society. Everything a prisoner do has to be done on time, for example eating, bathing, sleeping and other activities. Moreover, twenty four hours their movement will be watched closely to avoid any fights and quar

Shopping on the Internet

The marketing world has gone through many trends and transformations throughout their existence. The current and most popular one is the mobile marketing trend. It has gone through many changes, many marketers twisted this concept in a way never imagined before and it has been growing exponentially. The mobile marketing trend has a greater and greater impact on the society either done directly or indirectly. Many commercials currently on the market are monopolizing every single webpage. We can see them on Facebook, Youtube, and so on. They are not simply there; they actually will make sure it is the first thing that a viewer will see. Whenever I select a link to watch a free TV show, there are always numerous pop-ups over the actual page that I want to see. The advertisements force us to see them because we have to close every single window. In addition, the access to an application can also be denied if the viewer does not w

Fathers and Paternity Leave

During a recent White House summit on working family, President Obama said "A whole lot of father would love to be home for their new baby's first weeks in the world " (Gretchen, 2014). Of course Obama is a father in his family and he would want to be with his family for his newborn baby like other men do. But in general those men cannot take the leave because of the negative consequences that will come after. Some companies do not offer the leave and some that do offer the leave show the unspoken disapproval and they know exactly what punishments they will get after they come back to work from the leave. The consequences are most likely to effect on the earnings and other benefits from work. Although men who take paternity leave offer career penalties and social backlash, but there are many benefits from it that worth the risks. The opponents of paternity leave for men claim that dads are considered providers first and nurturing second (Poniewozik, 2014), but the truth is men can be either of them or both. There ar

The Importance of a College Degree

Today, schools are increasing in number worldwide. This is particularly true in the United States, where there is an emphasis on increasing the quality of education. In many countries, the largest part of the budget goes the administration of primary and secondary schools, with higher education being the most privileged. For example. Universities will remain open, even during crisis or government shut down. This illustrates the importance that is placed on education in society, and how increasing intelligence will more effectively expand knowledge of technology, science, and business in todays youth. The world needs more skilled scientists, entrepreneurs, and teachers who can more successfully encourage global development and economic growth. By furthering education, development in any country also benefits. Exposition Analysis Haydn: Symphony No. 104

Haydn opens the exposition by modulating from the tonic minor in the slow introduction to the tonic major and opens with 4 main motifs to be used throughout the exposition. Motif (a) being the first 4 note legato motif; (b) being the scalic quaver rise of a fifth; (c) being the staccato notes all playing the same with an appoggiatura on the last note; and (d) being the descending four note fall following that. The rise of a fifth between (b) and (c) gives link back to the slow intro where it does the same in the first two bars, the appoggiatura in (c) also links back to the many seen in the slow intro. Haydn harmonizes (d) between the bass and violin 1 in thirds and has violin 2 playing a similar fall syncopated between that of the bass to give a feeling of a driving rhythm. The phrase ends with an imperfect cadence; then it's repeated only (d) is inverted and the acceding scale gives a feeling of anticipation with a perfect cadence at the end as it leads into the transition section. Tyrannical Bureaucracy at its Finest

Nikolai Gogol is known to have a satirical type of comedy in his works. This holds true for his pieces The Inspector General, Dead souls, and his short story The Overcoat. The Overcoat was one of his most influential short stories ever written, and with its accurate depiction of lower-class life in Russia it is cited as the beginning of Realism in Russia. While Gogol uses a realistic depiction of the lower-class life he also uses humor in his tone in order to satirize the government bureaucracy throughout the story. Though some would argue that a label such as Realism would seem to ignore the comedy and fantasy presented in the story. Gogol's comedic tone is first seen when he is introducing the department in which Akaky Akakievich work department is being first introduced by stating that "there is nothing touchier than departments, regiments, bureaus, in fact, any caste of officials " (632). Gogol's teasing of the departments sets the tone for the rest of the story and how he will be treating the matter of the government bureaucracy in the departments. Shortly after introducing the de

The Reuirements of Moral Repsonsibility

In Freedom and Necessity, A. J. Ayer makes the claim that one cannot be morally responsible if placed under constraint, or given a cause that makes him/her do certain actions involuntarily. On the other hand, Harry G. Frankfurt comes to the conclusion that to be morally responsible, one must have no other option or intention to do otherwise in Alternate Possibilities and Moral Responsibility. They may sound similar, but the clear difference will be pointed out. Putting a different twist on things, Thomas Nagel states that there are other factors in play that we cannot control that can possibly place us in situations in which we would have to make questionable decisions. In such circumstances, Nagel contends that those that could be considered responsible by law are no more morally responsible than the other. In this paper I will analyze the argument of whether moral responsibility requires the ability to do otherwise, and argue that although the ability to choose is not always availabl

Does Religion Cause War?

My friend Michael doesn't like cheeseburgers. He refuses to eat them and if we go to McDonalds he always gets Chicken McNuggets. I should probably kill him for not having the same beliefs as me, right? I think that everyone would tell me not to do that because it is too extreme. Fighting over one's beliefs is extreme and extremely wrong. Many people say that religion is one of the main reasons of war around the world, but they are wrong. "History simply does not support the hypothesis that religion is the major cause of conflict. " (Lurie, Rabbi A) Various theologies and differing views on them are only small portions of the factors of conflict. Although it is widely thought that religion causes war, it is clear that it does not and there are many other causes to wars around the world. Religion is a unique force in society. A force so great that it "helped abolish slavery, as well as promoting equal rights for africans and women historically " (Why Religions Sometimes ) and yet a

The Alliances' Hand in the Start of World War I

Why did World War I turn into a global war as opposed to just a regional conflict? The answer lies in the alliance system. The alliance system was in place far before World War I started but a series of events caused the alliances to take a more prominent form and consequently have a larger role in the start of the Great War. There were multiple reasons behind that that contributed to the alliance system being the main cause of the war. The assassination of Franz Ferdinand, the archduke of Austro-Hungary, tied into as one of the main instigators for joining the countries together into more prevalent relations; the Dual Alliance was formed, and later the Central Alliance; and nationalism played a key role in the coming together of the alliances, as it promoted a sense of unity for their own countries and in turn led them to fight against the countries on the opposite alliance party. All three of those reasons contributed to alliances being the main cause of World War I, as opposed to an

Diving into the Wreck by Adrienne Rich

Adrienne Rich dives into the new underwater world and is uncertain of her surroundings. Rich's poem "Diving into the Wreck " is about a female who dives into a shipwreck and explores the area for "treasure ". Soon after she has been exposed to this new underwater world long enough she becomes one with her environment and the native merpeople who live there. Adrienne Rich lived during the mid-twentieth century which was a difficult time for women to find a proper place in society rather than leading a life predetermined by gender roles. Women struggled in order to leave the social trap, but even when they do the rest of the society rejects them because they are not men. This was an opportunity for Rich to try to get the word of the common woman and into the mind of others. Rich uses the diving metaphor and symbolism to convey her thoughts and ideals on how it was to have a woman attempt to traverse to a new society in life and overcome the patriarchal society. The diving metaphor is use

The Essential Role of Women in Post Conflict Reconstruction

Historically women have not played any significant role in post-conflict peacebuilding. The international and national communities have shown little concern for gender-oriented collaboration. However, in recent years the United Nations has strengthened its commitment to encouraging more balanced gender representation.i Four Security Council resolutions were passed in the year 2000 on women, peace, and security.ii UN research has concluded that the role of women in peacekeeping is both significant and essential. Peacebuilding in post-conflict Iraq has denied women a role, but in Sri Lanka, progress has been substantial in reconstruction and it has included women in every stage. While Sri Lanka has made some positive progress, Iraq is still in the grips of an ongoing insurgency.iii Ignoring the needs of half the population has been Iraq's major stumbling block, as the marginalization of women has hindered successful peacebuilding. There are many reasons why women's participation in pe

Who Moved My Cheese? by Spencer Johnson

Who Moved My Cheese The book ,Who Moved My Cheese, is basically a short story that shows us a simpler way on how to deal with change. The change that we may come face to face with in our family life and in our work environment. It uses metaphors that may be odd , but can be easily interpreted and applied to ourselves. While it is a small book that can be read in an hour it holds plenty of information. The book starts off when some friends meet up at a school reunion. When one person tells a story to his friends on how to deal with change. There are four fictional characters named Sniff, Scurry, Hem,and Haw. You can somewhat figure out what each character does by their names. Sniff and Scurry ,which are mice, would see the change and then act quickly on it which would be the more logical thing to do. While Hem and Haw ,which are little people, show the more complex side by overthinking everything. The four character are put into a maze and are meant to find the cheese that has been placed . The True Story of Aladdin

Different tales have been passed down from generation to generation throughout history. Some of the old tales passed down have been changed by the modern day world for different purposes. Some purposes include enhancing and making the tales more appealing for the listeners and viewers of the current generation. The story of "Aladdin and the enchanted lamp" from the one thousand and one nights is among the several tales that have been changed a little from the original version and modified to a modern day version, is the Disney film production, Aladdin. The two different version of Aladdin have some differences in the portrayal of the main character Aladdin; however, they also have a similar love at first sight concept. While the book made Aladdin look like a lazy and timorous person, the Disney version made Aladdin's character wise. In the book, the main character, Aladdin lived in China with both his mother and father. Aladdin preferred to play on the s

Keeping To Kill a Mockingbird in the Classroom

It is always a controversy in public schools, should a particular book be taught? Some may argue for or against based on the book's content, language, and morals. To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee is a debatable book on the required reading list for the tenth grade curriculum. Scout, or Jean Louise Finch, tells the story of Maycomb County in a way which is easy for the reader to understand and connect to. Although the book is yet another learning curve in the tenth grade's curriculum, many believe tenth graders are not yet mature enough to understand the messages To Kill a Mockingbird is voicing. While the argument against the book's language and actions are valid, the truth is that tenth grade students are more than capable of handling the material. In today's society, students are more developed in their maturity levels and what they see, learn, and hear in their everyday lives. Crime is inevitable, profane language is unavoidable, and student history courses for tenth grade

Teamwork in Nursing

The health care system is complex and its myriad and interconnected parts give it a unique perspective regarding workplace communication. Effective communication has been linked to the delivery of high quality health care and safety in the work environment (World Health Organization, 2009). Furthermore, teamwork in nursing is an important component of effective healthcare because it supports patient wellness, job satisfaction, and commitment to organizations (Gonzalez & Rotman, 2010). In addition, teamwork in nursing leads to greater efficiency. This is due to the synergies among colleagues and the collective pooling of skills, knowledge and resources around problems that teamwork promotes. Therefore, teamwork is important in nursing because it ensures safety in work, commitment to organization, job satisfaction and most importantly high quality healthcare to patients. Safety in nursing is directly rela

The High Price of Plastic

Did you know that plastic bags are one of the largest sources of litter in the world? According to research discussed on How Stuff Works, plastic bags can take anywhere from two hundred to a thousand years to break down. They also give off toxic chemicals when burned, so burning is a hazardous way to rid of the material. Because of this it is difficult to safely dispose of plastic. According to the same site, less than 1% of plastic bags used in the US are recycled due to recycling costs being much higher than the recovered plastic is worth. States are attempting to find new strategies to reduce the number of plastic carry-out bags from grocery stores and other retail outlets to help with the issues arising. They believe regulating the use of bags can lower harmful impacts to oceans, rivers, lakes and the wildlife that inhabits them. Reducing bag use can also relieve pressure on landfills and waste management. One of the methods being experimented with is charging for the plastic bags
