Short Story - Where Am I?

I cannot see anything. It is very dark. I am sitting on the floor and leaning on what seems to be a wall. I put my hands on my face and my head starts to hurt. I feel what seems like dried up blood on my forehead. That must explain why I was passed out. I put my hands in front of me and I feel a zipper attached to something- a backpack? I unzip the backpack and the first thing I feel is a long metal object. It is a little heavy and it has a rubber circle in the middle. I push the circle and there is light. It is a flash light! I look around and all I see is a red door. I open it and go inside. I look around me and I just see a narrow walkway in front of me. "Hello?" I scream. All I hear back is my echo. I look in the backpack again and I find a map. I open it up and It looks like a maze. Where am I? I stand up and I feel a throbbing pain going straight to my right ankle. It hurts to stand on it so I just try to drag it. I walk straight trying to find out where I am. After walking fo

Global Causes of Conflict

There is always conflict in this world and there always will be. Humanity as a whole has faced many conflicts and as it has progressed, conflicts have increased. With the increase in knowledge, there are more things in this world to form opinions on. As a result, this creates more opposition. The causes of these conflicts are religion, laws, and want One of the most common and violent conflicts in history is religion. According to Voltaire, "It is characteristics of fanatics who read the holy scriptures to tell themselves: God killed, so I must kill." This means that people are using the holy scriptures to justify murder and deception. This is important because it shows how these differences in opinions could affect the world immensely. Furthermore, by examining Voltaire's ideas, while one person may believe that one must follow the bible and live their l

Heroes in Oral and Written Tradition

Traditions, which may appear fixed in society, are often subject to changes and adaptations as future generations attempt to mould these traditions to fit their contemporary values. Although the basic structure of these traditions are still evident, modifications occur so the custom is able to maintain its relevance. This is also true of the epic tradition. In ancient epics, the hero traditionally represents that culture's ideals and appeals to the citizens on a personal level; however, as the epic tradition progresses, the author increasingly begins to use the hero and other central characters as a tool to promote his own agenda: to shape, and potentially change, the values of his society. Through the examination of the central characters in The Iliad, The Faerie Queene, and Paradise Lost, one can come to comprehend this transition throughout the epic tradition. The first known poems in the classical epic tradition were the two Homeric epics: The Iliad and The Odyssey. Although the

Critical Analysis of The Things They Carried

"How many roads must a man walk down, Before you call him a man? How many seas must a white dove sail, Before she sleeps in the sand? Yes, how many times must the cannon balls fly, Before they're forever banned? The answer my friend is blowin' in the wind, The answer is blowin' in the wind. Yes, how many years can a mountain exist, Before it's washed to the sea? Yes, how many years can some people exist, Before they're allowed to be free? Yes, how many times can a man turn his head, Pretending he just doesn't see? The answer my friend is blowin' in the wind, The answer is blowin' in the wind. Yes, how many times must a man look up, Before he can really see the sky? Yes, how many ears must one man have, Before he can hear people cry? Yes, how many deaths will it take till he knows, That too many people have died? The answer my friend is blowin' in the wind, The answer is blowin' in the wind." Bob Dylan "The Things They Carried" is a story of love during the wartime. Every m

History of the Samurai

Introduction The samurai (bushi) were the military class of ancient and pre-modern Japan, the Japanese equivalent of medieval knights in England. The samurai had a major influence in the development of Shogun Japan; in order to understand this, the following should be known about the samurai. These warriors typically wore the kimono in their everyday life, and wore loincloth beneath their unique elaborate armour. Military training mainly consisted of firing arrows on horseback and sword fighting. The role of the samurai was to obey and protect their daimyo/lord. They followed the seven principles of the Bushido code. Unlike the English knights, their life was mostly about philosophy and loyalty. What did they wear? Samurai wore interesting clothing. The hakama was the traditional samurai pants used by samurai horsemen to protect the legs (Little Star Enterprises Inc. n.d). Anyways, the samurai wore the kimono most of the time; however the hitatare style of clothing and loincloth beca

Dramatic Irony in Roman Fever

In the story "Roman Fever," one of Edith Wharton's outstanding works, dramatic irony is a powerful ingredient that makes readers overwhelmed. The title "Roman Fever" runs through the whole story and provides both psychological and physical meanings on dramatic irony, which are about the 25-year-ago letter and Mrs. Ansley's illness. The psychological meaning of Roman fever refers to Mrs. Slade's jealousy of Mrs. Ansley's daughter, Barbara, who she thought is better than her daughter, Jenny: "I appreciate her. And perhaps envy you. Oh, my girl is perfect; if I were a chronic invalid I'd-well, I think I'd rather be in Jenny's hands I always wanted a brilliant daughter and never quite understood why I got an angel instead" (123). Due to this kind of intense feeling, Mrs. Slade started to talk about the 25-year-old letter, which is the beginning of the whole dramatic irony event: "Well, you went to meet the man I was engaged to-and I can repeat every word of the letter that took you the

The Endangered Black-Footed Ferret

An endangered species is defined as "a native species that faces a significant risk of extinction in the near future throughout all or a significant portion of its range. Such species may be declining in number due to threats such as habitat destruction, climate change, or pressure from invasive species" (Endangered Species). In an ever changing world we live in, we gain many aspects that are positive through conservation and protection. Sadly, we are destroying more than we are gaining. In the past century, our planet has grown from 1.75 billion to 7 billion people. As our planet gets bigger and bigger we are destroying more of our resources. These sources consist of oil, food, and species. Of the many species we have seen diminish, such as elephants, Rhinos, and Tigers, other species are not as getting as much credit and are also disappearing. One of these species is the Black-Footed Ferret. Through conservation efforts from the past thirty years the native ferret is making

The Homework Ban

In this essay I will be explaining why homework should be banned. In my opinion homework is a waste of time and is a bad way for kids to learn. Homework creates really bad and unnecessary working habits, homework creates stress for students especially those in higher grades, they need to study for tests, homework shortens your free time, for yourself and when wanting to spend time with family members and friends. Lastly homework creates school within our own home which is bad for out developing mind. The first reason homework should be banned is because it shortens your free time. Since so much time is spent doing homework because we get given so much, less time is actually spent doing what we want. For example we may want to spend time with our family members, relatives, friends or doing extra curricular activities like exercising

Informative Essay - Blood Donation

In 2007, Rick's wife, Kelly, was in premature labor with their second son Christian. Fortunately, Christian was born without any defects but Kelly was not so fortunate. She suffered a life threatening hemorrhage. Kelly needed thirteen units of blood in order to survive the hemorrhage. Two years later, Kelly was going through yet another premature labour with their first daughter Amy. Another thirteen units of blood was used to save Kelly's life. During both times Kelly went into labour, Rick knew there was nothing he could do to help except to donate blood to help save lives of other people in need of it in emergencies just as his wife did. "I owe my life, my wife's and therefore my children's lives to the service and more importantly to those who selflessly give blood. You can't make blood, it has to be donated and I see it as this - pay in now as you never know when you, a family member or friend may need it," says Rick. Rick has devoted the past two years encouraging people to dona

Grant in A Lesson Before Dying

In the story, "A Lesson before Dying," by Earnest J. Gaines, the lessons Grant learned throughout the story would affect his life continually. Ironically, he learns lessons by teaching lessons. He teaches a man a lesson before dying. This story takes place when segregation was occurring in the late 1940s in Bayonne, Louisiana. At the beginning of the story, Grant is very tenacious and pessimistic, but he will later learn a lot from this experience. The lessons Grant learns will affect not only him, but the people around him too. Understanding life beyond education was very important to Reverend Ambrose. The fact that Grant did not talk about God with Jefferson made him very distraught. "If we didn't talk about God, them what else on earth was important enough to talk about to someone who was about to meet God?" (Rev. Ambrose pg. 101). Reverend Ambrose senses the need for Jefferson to know about God because he is alarmed about his spiritual needs. G

Character Analysis of Hamlet's Ophelia

Have you ever had a week where you felt like absolutely nothing in your life was going your way? Hamlet certainly feels this way throughout Hamlet by William Shakespeare but in his case his turmoil lasts longer than a week. His problems start after he receives the news of the death of his father. To further his anguish he then finds out that his mother has married his Uncle Claudius. After being visited by the ghost of his father, Hamlet discovers that his Uncle Claudius was behind the murder of his father. Hamlet's mission then becomes avenging his father's death. In the process of fulfilling his new mission Hamlet kills his girlfriend's father, Polonius, and drives himself and Ophelia further into madness. Ophelia portrays many different character traits that will be explained throughout this essay. Ophelia expresses naivety throughout the story. This

Tourism Industry in Bathurst, New Brunswick

Tourism is a huge deal in Bathurst, is at least it should be. While he have had successful business in the past, with things like the Smurfit-Stone paper mill or the mines/smelter, our biggest draw is no doubt what we have to offer outsiders. With New Brunswick's (or at the very least Bathurst's) economy dwindling, we rely heavily on tourism and the tourism industry to help keep us afloat. There can, however, be huge drawbacks to tourism, such as pollution, litter, vandalism, etc. One of Bathurst's most famous landmarks is the Daly Point Nature Reserve. It boasts an impressive 100 acres of pristine salt marsh and wooded plots. Home to rare specimens such as the Maritime Ringlet Butterfly, the beautiful Reserve has long been a point of pride for the city and its people. This is not always a good thing, as naturally the reserve draws people to it from near and far. With increased traffic in the trails, you can be sure of two things: an increase in litter/pollution, and a decrease in local wildlife sightings. Although the point is home to a plethora of wild animals and insects, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that more people in the trail

Physical Movement Analysis

Introduction The skill to be investigated for this movement analysis paper is the tennis serve. The tennis serve is one of the most complex strokes in competitive tennis. I did not choose a specific serve but there are three types of tennis serves. There is the flat, slice, and topspin. The flat serve is a hit on a flat trajectory with a minimum of spin and it is the most commonly used serve. The slice serve is a sidespin that makes the ball serve in the air and after the bounce and it has the lowest force and torque. The topspin serve is a high arching trajectory and a high, kicking bounce. This serve has been found to have the highest potential for injuries and it has the greatest force and torque. I chose this movement because I am in the process of learning how to play tennis and I could not understand the technique of the swing. It was very difficult for me to hit the ball at the timed swing. I read that injury rate from playing tennis ranges from 2 to 20 injuries per 1000 hours p

Classroom Management Theories

As an individual who went through the extreme academic and exam oriented schooling system in an Asian country, I strive to create a teaching environment that will inspire hope, ignite the light of imagination and creativity as well as instill respect and love for education amongst my students. I believe that teaching is the only profession that allows an individual to create all other professions, hence being of upmost respect. I would like to be a teacher who inspires students through blending the given course structure with various resources, but at the same time fitting it into the same conventional teaching box. My idea class would have a common goal created by both myself and my students, and steps taken together to satisfactorily achieve the goal. As a Media Studies teacher, I am well aware that facts are easily available on the internet (Attwood, 2008). The aim of teaching has now shifted from making students know things, to making students learn things on their own. I believe

The Concept of Morality in Frankenstein

Morality is a topic that has been debated throughout all time. Questions are asked about its origin, its definition, and its purpose. In Frankenstein, morality is a topic that is discussed in the characters actions and thoughts. The creature is one character that has morality issues and they can be seen clearly. In the book Frankenstein, the creature is truly immoral. However, this immorality is caused by his creator and the world around him. In order to understand what immorality is, first one must understand what morality is. Merriam-Webster defines moral as "considered right and good by most people : agreeing with a standard of right behavior". Morals can be discussed in both a religious way and in a secular way. From the religious viewpoint, morality is seen as following Jesus Christ's example, to aim to be sinless and pure. From the secular viewpoint, being moral usually just means being good to others. Respect, love, and kindness are important parts of being moral. No

Racial Residential Segregation

Strides towards racial equality define American society. Yet, racial residential segregation remains an issue today despite efforts to remove this expression of racial inequality. Racial residential segregation can be defined as "the separation of racial groups in urban space" (Boustan, 2013, p.2). The definition covers five dimensions of segregation, which are 1) evenness measured by the dissimilarity index, 2) exposure measured by the isolation index, 3) concentration measured by the delta index, 4) centralization measured by the absolute centralization index, and 5) clustering measured by the spatial proximity index (Steinmetz, Weinberg, & Iceland, 2002). Analysis of census data using these measures shows some improvement in racial residential segregation but not enough to indicate the desired level of integration (Charles, 2003; Boustan, 2013). Persisting racial residential segregation has been linked to a wide range of negative consequences that affect black communities

Piety and Censorship

Philosophers often struggle to define justice – what it is, who controls it, and who suffers or benefits from it. Aeschylus presents controversy about defining justice between different gods in the Eumenides. He expresses this through the magical features of the ancient world and through a trial of conflicting interpretations of justice that results in the first signs of democracy. There is an immediate transition from the main ideas of this compared to that of Plato's Euthyphro. Euthyphro clearly demonstrates that there is no place for piety to have an influence in justice. He establishes the extent to which we are responsible for our own actions and how we should go about correcting a wrong. This idea is furthered in Plato's Republic when he offers an alternative item that will influence justice – censorship. This proves that human knowledge and wisdom can serve as justice without the direct intervention of the gods. Ultimately, piety and censorship are both very influen

History of the Trojan War

The Trojan War started at the wedding of King Peleus, king of Myrmidons and the sea nymph named Thetis. When Eris, the daughter of Zeus wasn't invited to the wedding, she was angered and discord the banquet hall in the form of a golden apple, inscribed with the words "for the fairest," then throw it among the guests. The goddesses argue over who deserves the apple. Goddesses Hera, Athena and Aphrodite each thought that she was the fairest out of all. They asked Zeus to decide who is the fairest. Zeus didn't want to get involved, so he sent a prince named Paris, the son of King Priam of Troy in Anatolia to be the judge because he was the most honest person on earth (or he was too stupid to know the dispute between the goddess). The goddesses bribed and offered Paris deals in order to win the contest. Athena promised him to become successful in the battle against the Greeks. Hera offered power to make him the King of Europe and Asia. And Aphrodite promised to give him the w

United States Crime Databases

The United States incarcerates more men and women annually, than any other nation in the world. This statistic holds a direct correlation with the everlasting issue of crime that is dealt with in America. A major tool that measures crime, and subsequently counteracts it, are crime databases. These databases include, but are not limited to, the National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS), Uniform Crime Report (UCR), National Incident-Based Reporting System (NIBRS), and others. These programs are used so that we can effectively measure criminal trends, and their societal effects. This essay focuses specifically on our nation's 2 major crime statistics gathering programs, National Crime Victimization Surveys and Uniform Crime Reports, and their importance within our criminal justice system. These criminal statistic programs have their strengths and weaknesses. The Uniform Crime Report is an annual statistical summary of all arrests, and reported crime in the United States. These s

Henry Ford and the Model T

In the early 1920's, the streets of the United States began to change from the clip-clop of horses, to the roaring sounds of gasoline engines. The roaring twenties marked a time where Americans were spending money, and enjoying life with new inventions such as movies, the radio, theme parks, and the widespread use of electricity. The most important invention of the early twenties was Ford's introduction of the Model T. Ford was the first car company to bring a cheap and reliable car, to the masses. The impact of the Model T was enormous, influencing the national economy, and creating a new American lifestyle. Roads were being built, and cities grew as people could now travel to the cities with ease, from the rural countrysides. The Model T paved the way for all modern cars, and its designs and mechanics are still used to this very day. Henry Ford brought his company from a one-man business, headquartered in his garage, to a multi-million dollar business, that has become a staple of th

Work Discrimination and Gender Inequality

Since the early 1900's women have been fighting against the suppression of gender inequality, whether at home or in the workplace. Women have come a long way, of course, and are definitely fighting to win the battle of equality, but gender roles are very important in our society. They have been acquired in life from birth and society continues to uphold these gender roles. Male gender treatment is very different from women. This issue has become very important to me, as a woman. As early as infancy, we learn to adjust to the specific gender roles, and as we grow, they become more apparent, more important to our roles in society (norms). There is a lot of sexual discrimination against women and because of this discrimination, social mobility has been difficult, but it is certainly changing to benefit women. However, women are still belittled in society, men are still dominant. I think that this issue is very important, not only for women, but for everyone. This is a problem that affects

The Importance of Corn in Hopi Society

Modern agriculture is widely used all across the world. It makes large scale agriculture much simpler and less time consuming. So why do the Native American tribe of the Hopi refuse to use these techniques? To the Hopi, corn is the most important crop. Corn is a part of everything they create and eat. So why would they limit their productivity? Why wouldn't they use machines to produce as much corn as possible? These unique Native Americans view corn as somewhat of a savior to the horrible world that once was. Their fourth world was created to reform the evils of the third world, fueled greed and selfishness. It is possible that their resistance to these agricultural technologies is to prevent these types of behaviors. If the most important thing became the corn yield for the season, wouldn't there be feelings of greed and material wealth? The corn that the Hopi grow can be found in the dry dirt in the farming lands of Hopi vi

Analysis of Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Birthmark

Perfection is something everyone strives for, yet no one can truly achieve. In today's society, an immeasurable amount of time is wasted, and millions of dollars are spent, in the hopes to reach this unreachable goal. In Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Birthmark, he takes readers into a world where the foolishness of trying to achieve physical perfection is discovered. Hawthorne's ongoing theme shows how striving for perfection can wind up being the downfall of mankind. The moral of the story is that there is a high price for the pursuit of perfection. The main character Aylmer wanted his wife Georgiana to be free of blemishes. It was mentioned that everything about her is good, except he could not stop staring at the birthmark on her face. Aylmer believed the crimson hand "was the bond by which an angelic spirit kept itself in union with a mortal frame" (29). In other words, it was ugly and kept her from being perfect. This is relatable to religion. Aylmer in this story, is simi

Overview of the Immune System

The immune system is the body's defense mechanism against pathogens. This system comprises of many cells that work together to protect the body from foreign invaders such as bacteria, viruses, parasites as well as tumors. The immune system is divided into two primitive forms, the innate and adaptive systems. The roles for both types are vital in the immune system; the innate is the rapid, non-specific primary response against any foreign material the body encounters, whereas the adaptive system is a secondary response and a more specific line of defense. The adaptive as well as the innate responses initiation are hugely associated with each other. The innate response consists of many components; these include mechanical, chemical, humoral as well as cellular barriers. The main line of defense in the innate system is the cellular component; there are different types of cells involved, however, the most critical cell of all other different immune cells is called a macrophage. Macrophag
