Theme Analysis - Lord of the FliesIn most people's opinion, "Lord of the Flies," by William Golding is one of the best novels of all time. As a matter of fact, many popular television shows and films are based off of the themes and setting of this extravagant book such as Lost and Cast Away. Lord of the Flies is about a group of British schoolboys who crash-land on an uninhabited island and discover that there are adults present. At first it's all fun and games with the boys who have finally attained freedom and no longer live by rules. After a short period of time, havoc occurs and the reader questions themselves. Are rules necessary? Is freedom really a positive? Is innocence always good? In the book, the main characters consist of big uns, little uns, Ralph, Piggy, Roger, Jack, Sam, Eric, and Simon. In the book Lord of the Flies Jack and the painted savages represent loss of innocence as a theme. The painted savages are Jack's followers. Unlike Ralph and his followers, the painted savages consider their painted faces to be more than camouflage. They consider the paint to represent a d |

Modern-Day SlaveryToday, there are about twenty-seven million slaves around the world, more than ever before in history. A slave is defined as "a person who is forced to work for another against his/her will" (Slave" def. 2). All over the world, slaves are kidnapped and worked to death, abused and taken advantage of. There are many different types of slavery in different countries that undertake the process of breaking the law and capture others to be forced into slavery. Although modern day slavery can be hard to believe, people of all races, gender, and nationality are subject to being taken away from their homes to work in inhumane environments with terrible living conditions. Sex slavery is the largest offender of slavery, where 46 percent of slaves in the world are sex slaves. A prominent area where sex slavery sticks out is Eastern Europe. Moldova, Europe's poorest country, is estimated to have 400,000 women sold into sex slavery business since 1986. This is a large proportion compared to the 4 million sla |

Andrew Jackson's LegacyWhat if decisions made by you that you believed would benefit everyone instead ended up making people hate and despise you. Such was case in the life of Andrew Jackson, the seventh president of the United States of America. In my opinion the decisions made by Andrew Jackson were an attempt to benefit the country and its people. The fact that he was willing to make hard decisions that were unpopular at the time makes me believe that he was truly a hero of the people. They called Andrew Jackson "the people's president" because he was born and raised like most common people of his time. Andrew's father died the week before he was born and being son of poor Irish immigrants (1), he knew the meaning of hardship and was able to easily relate to the common person. By the age of 14 Jackson was an orphan and was forced to learn life's lessons the hard way. Andrew Jackson was the first president born into poverty and once stated "I was born for a storm, and a calm does not suit me" (2). The legacy of Andrew Jackson interests me because he was born into a harsh environ |

The Patient Protection and Affordable CareBack on March 30, 2010 president Barrack Obama signed The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) since it had been approved by the house on March 21, 2010. It was a great step in the direction of safeguarding healthcare for all the individuals and family of the USA regardless of whether they are insured or not. There are several types of classes of people that live in the USA, who doesn't have access to healthcare insurance. These people range from citizen of the United States to legal immigrants to others who are illegible but see insurance as very expensive and thus opt to stay away. There are many uninsured Americans which are estimated to be about 32 million people today, but now that the PPACA was signed in to law the number are expect to drop significantly to about 23 million people. Most of the uninsured are citizen and legal immigrants who cannot find a job or they work for minimum wage, also people that are illegal immigrants because they are not legible to receive |

The Downfall of King LearBruce Lee, one of the most influential martial artists of all time, said "Knowledge will give you power, but character respect." Respect is a very difficult thing to earn. It can take months or even years of good character demonstration to obtain. Most of all, it takes patience and clear thinking to obtain respect. When people think clearly and listen to those who are loyal to them, they may able to see what is happening and maintain healthy power. The same ideology stays true in life, for only when people with power are not blinded by unclear thinking will power not turn corrupt. Throughout the story of King Lear, the evidence used to support my claim is pervasive and is demonstrated by various elements throughout the play. King Lear is a Shakespearean tragedy, and the downfall of the protagonist highlights the importance of clear thinking in terms of power. A tragedy is a branch of drama or playwriting that portrays the sorrowful and terrible events encountered by a heroic |

GABAA ReceptorBIOL*1090 Writing Assignment Student Name: Robert Stanley Last 3 Digits of Student ID#: 896 Seminar Day: Thursday Seminar Time: 12:30pm Seminar Room: 2306B Assignment Title: Effects of Ethanol on the GABAA Receptor Ethanol is a form of alcohol and is a substance that has many profound effects on the human body when consumed. Recent evidence shows a connection between ligand gated ion channels, neurotransmitters and an inhibitory effect on the central nervous system (CNS) when ethanol is present(Davies). Specifically, the effect of alcohol on the neurotransmitter gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA). When GABA binds to the GABAA receptor with ethanol the result on the central nervous system is intoxication and multiple behavioural changes (Lobo). The GABAA receptor is nested in the cell membrane of neurons (post synaptic cell) and is classified as a ligand gated ion channel. These channels open in response to a neurotransmitter (GABA), allowing ions (e.g. chloride ions) to flow from the exterior to interior of the cell, increasing the cells polarization which prevents the spread of an action potential or signal to pass betwe |

Propaganda During the American RevolutionThe American Revolution was a war that was fought between a great power and an emerging country. America was greatly outnumbered in men, and it would be easy to infer that the colonists lost their hope immediately. However, propaganda played a huge roll in keeping the colonists rooting for their country. Propaganda came in many forms such as pamphlets, articles in newspapers, and posters. Clever and witty writers such as John Adams and Thomas Paine relayed information, and support through their writings; conveying to not to give up. The definition of propaganda is biased information, that is spread publicly, to publicize a particular cause. When one thinks of propaganda, one may think of the infamous posters created by Joseph Goebbels during the Holocaust. However, the propaganda used by the colonists during the American Revolutio |

I've Come to Realize...It's OKAt eight years old, I did not know enough about the labels people created for others. I also did not know how hurtful society could be when they do not understand something. At times I wish that I could write a letter to my younger self and tell her not to worry about the opinions of others, depending on the situation. I believe that there is nothing wrong with being different. It was raining and I was staring out the car window watching the trees pass by. My eldest sister was reading her book and my little sister was napping next to me. I could hear my parents' discussion about one of my dad's students. Their topic did not really interest me so I just let my wondrous imagination and thoughts take over. I knew nothing about people's behavior and how they made their decisions, nor did I really care. It never occurred to me what the world was like or how it could affect me. My biggest problem was figuring out what movie to watch when I got home. I leaned my head against the window contemplating on that problem. "Did you hear what I said, Alysa?" asked my dad. I could see his muddy brown e |

The Hunger Games by Suzanne CollinsI have always questioned myself how would it feel to be under somebody's control, and live a life that you cannot decide your fate. In the novel "The Hunger Games," written by Suzanne Collins, the districts have been controlled and tortured by the Capitol because of their rebellion. The punishment is that each district has to send two children from the ages of 14 to 18 as the tributes to fight in a battle against each others in able to find the winner. Katniss is one of the main character with her partner is Peeta, they are the champion of the Hunger Games. At the end of the book, when Katniss and Peeta can't stand to see either one of them die, they commit suicide so none of them will be alive to be a winner. These people are unwilling to do it, but they don't have any choice. I don't agree with the idea of the Capitol to be control over the districts and punish them. This idea of controlling other people is a cruel idea. The idea of controlling over other people is cruel because the kids are forced to fight for their chance of living. For example, they are sent to the arena every year to enter the Hunger Games, and they are not guaranteed that they will |

The Transformation of Frederick DouglassFrederick Douglass's Narrative acts as a protest literature against slavery. It reveals how he transformed from a slave to a man. Throughout the narrative, Frederick Douglass provides various examples of the ways he manages to gain literacy skills. Frederick Douglass makes it his goal to learn as much as he can, gradually learning how to read and write, his knowledge was his passport to becoming a free man. Frederick Douglass was born into slavery in Tuckahoe, Maryland in 1818. His original name was Frederick Augustus Washington Bailey. He was the son of a slave name Harriet Bailey, and his father was a white man who he never knew, or met before. When he was an infant, Douglass and his mother were separated. He never knew her as his mother because at an early age they separate children from their mothers which usually happens before the child becomes one year old. His mother made her way to see him only at night by traveling on foot. His mother soon died and Frederick Douglass was not able to be there for her sickness, her death, and the burial. Wind Energy in IdahoOne topic that turns Idahoans against each other-wind. Not just that it blows so much, but that power companies want to use it to make energy. Lately in Idaho, there has been a heated argument on whether or not Idaho should have wind turbines generating wind energy in the southern part of the state. Wind energy is a viable option for Idaho not only because it is a clean source of energy, but also because it is cost efficient and the wind farms can be built practically anywhere. This wind power debate has been going on for much longer than most people realize. In the article Wind Energy: Opponents Stress Problem with Subsidies; Proponets Insist it is a Property Rights Issue, it says, "What has become a wind energy development debate had its beginnings in 1978 with the passage of the Public Utility Regulatory Policies Act (PURPA)" (Coffman). The PURPA states that power companies have to buy power from other more efficient producers in order to promote a greater use of domestic |

Fences Against Freedom by Leslie Marmon SilkoRacism tends to be an extremely sensitive topic of discussion. Some people believe racism is fully alive to this day. Silko beautifully expresses her thoughts and experiences. Silko has personally been dealt the hand of racism, up close and personal, and is fully aware of the disturbing devils that lurk within. Silko vividly paints her experiences for the reader. Silko believes the government is the original keep of racism: frequently being stopped at the boarder for bearing colored skin, or being shooed out a tourists photograph, Silko has experienced the deserving reality know as racism. Often when one bears white flesh and born into a white family, racism has never been experienced first hand. Racism is well and thriving today. Young Adult Males with Absentee FathersProgress is something that we as people hope to develop in our lifetime; however, whether or not we actually develop and grow is a matter of different factors and circumstances that come together to mold and shape character during the adolescent stage. The strongest characteristic within development takes shape in the form of identity. As people, who we see ourselves as plays more of a role in our development than any other factor. It is with this notion in mind that the effect of role models and positive and negative influences take flight. For instance, for a child to be associated with a dominant identity that is skewed more towards the negative end of the spectrum entails possible adverse behavior patterns consistent with the identity of dominant associations. In short, people can best be categorized at a glance as representing who they choose to associate with in their day to day interactions. Just as it is near impossible to see to unlike things grouped together, the same can |

Ecology in the Modern WorldEcology is the study of the branch of biology dealing with the relations and interactions between organisms and their environment, including other organisms. In Barbara Kingsolver's "Animal, Vegetable, Miracle" (2007), she discusses her personal experience with self-grown eating and lists people that she met and create relationships with. The book revolves around the concept of improving her family's diet by eating only foods that they were able to grow themselves or obtain from the local market. The plan was to eat only organic products for a year. She spends much of her time explaining her family's reaction to their experiment, telling everyone about the rigorous sacrifices they had to make. Barbara Kingsolver argues that putting the kitchen and farms back at the center of family life would help diversify the American diet. Many Americans need to limit the amount of harmful products they consume because it is a danger to them and the environment. Eating farm grown products were not an issue in the book. Gro |

Caffeine and the Ability to SleepMany people use caffeine to keep themselves awake and energized during the day. Coffee and energy drinks are commonly consumed source of caffeine; and therefore whether caffeine actually affects the ability to sleep or not is the topic of this experiment. According to the Dr. Carol Ash, who did medicine research for 15 years, caffeine blocks the sleep induction of our body and increases the level of adrenalin; therefore, based on the current knowledge, the hypothesis is that caffeine is thought to affect people from falling asleep at night. Also, caffeine is predicted to affect people from having a deep sleep. To design an experiment to test the effect of caffeine consumption and sleep, a test should be carried |

Adam Smith and the Wealth of NationsAdam Smith's "The Wealth of Nations" explains his economical theories, which include how the concept of self-interest applies to economics, complications associated with mercantilism, and the role of the government. When explaining why division of labor has many advantages, he attributes them to human nature and self-interest (Smith, pg.21). He justifies self-interest for humans by stating how humans strive to exchange or barter goods and then the question of maximum efficiency comes into play (Smith, pg.23). He also finds it significant to include that human wisdom is not attributed for the need for division of labor but only self- interest is (Smith, pg.21). According to Smith, humans are rational and will go through any means to always do what is in their best self-interest, unlike animals that are incapable of the same. However, Smith fail |

My Journey to Mexico BeachAlthough my parents usually stole away at some point during the summer for their anniversary, the whole family jetted away on vacation together only once a year. Around the sun- filled month of July, my family finally began its trek toward Mexico Beach, FL, located near bustling Port Saint Joe. The drive to our vacation destination was filled with many non-eventful hours of pasture, sometimes broken with a rare sighting of some cattle or horses. As the drive began to come to a close, though, the scenery changed into a densely-forested area, which hid a military Air Force base. The only clues that the base was located there at all were an occasional "Keep Out – Bomb Disposal Area" sign or the ear-splitting sound of jets doing touch-and-go's. Line after mind-numbing line of pine trees all in a row sped by as we conquered one mile after another. Suddenly, the trees stop, and it was as if we had entered a totally different world altogether. Trees ended, and a virtual door opened. Befo |

Benefits and Drawbacks of Social NetworkingFacebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Skype: These are the major sites with which I come up when someone says "social networking." Among the young generation, connecting with friends or skimming their new posts, which tell you what they are recently up to, these sites dominant their daily routines. In "Is Technology Destroying Social Bonds?" the author Shawn Ghuman emphasizes both his positive perspective of social networking and its cost (110). Without the shadow of a doubt, it is an advanced way to keep in touch with your friends and peers, but could it benefit every part of our lives? Social networking sites are beneficial if used for communication, yet can also be harmful if it causes addiction. First of all, these social networking sites allow you to interact with your friends and family who may live far away; distance does not bother you at all in anyway. Whoever you may need, whenever you may need them, you are able to reach them instantly by using social network |

The Black Indian CommunityThe month of September 2003 would remain to be one of my best moment in the world that changed by notion about how I viewed the circumcision. Unlike the other days, this day I had wake up early in the morning than usual. The reason was because I was in a foreign country. I took my camera, packed it into a small bag which I had. I went to the next room only to found out my father had been waiting for me to take a shower so that we could go to the jungles of Gujarat state in western India. My father being a journalist, he had been given been given a task to investigate about the lost tribe of African living in India. Due to my curiosity of discovering new places, I had begged him to take me with him. Giving Juveniles a Second ChanceIf we begin to treat our kids like adults our society will no longer function properly. We'll be convicting first-time juveniles to prisons with adults that have committed a wide range of crimes. From child-molesters to murderers, do you want our kids to be sent to the mercy of these repeat-offenders in jail? The majority of Supreme Court have ruled that juveniles who committed murder could not sentenced to life in prison. I agree with the Supreme Court because juveniles are mentally underdeveloped, who deserves a second chance and there are many other influences to blame than them. A common phrase that is often used in this case of young juveniles committing crimes is "Old enough to do the crime, old enough to do the time." This phrase should be cleared to people that juveniles are not adults, and with this being said it will not make them one. Young juveniles are minors and less mature to think about the bigger picture of any given situation. In the article "Startlin |

Principles of Ethics in EngineeringAny professional, student, or person follows rules of ethics throughout their life. Different professional organizations have codes of ethics for their professionals to follow in the workplace. Students seeking degrees to become professionals must learn these rules of ethics so they can be successful in their jobs. Ethical situations can be faced in everyday life, taught throughout life, in educational courses, and the code of the code of ethics can be applied to life now as a student of engineering. As new engineering students and college students we will face many ethical situations. One of the most prominent ethical issues a student might face is the urge to cheat. Cheating is a serious problem, but some students might see it as their only option if they are struggling in a class or falling behind. The work load in college can be intense. Students may struggle to keep a balance between studying and a social life. When this happens they may feel that cheating is the only option left |

Abina and the Important MenDr. Seuss, with his wacky language and understanding of this harsh world, brought us the incredible story of Horton Hears a Who where, "a person is a person, no matter how small". Through this story, Horton, a courageous, loving elephant does everything in his power to protect the people who reside on a flower. Many seek to crush to what appears to be insanity, they seek to crush his and his people's voices. Through images and text Dr. Seuss tells a story of those not in power and their struggle towards equality. Similarly, Trevor R. Getz and Liz Clarke portray one, single story of an enslaved girl, Abina, who seeks freedom and for her voice to be heard. Abina And The Important Men, like Horton Hears a Who, aim for several different audiences through their relatable, child-like characters and these character's adult problems. Our Bully NationBullying in our country is becoming a growing epidemic. Especially with all the different types of bullying, like cyber, physical, and mental. Sometimes it can be hard to crackdown on every single case. According to the American Society for the Positive Care of Children, youth in the LGBT community, youth with disabilities, and socially isolated youth are prone to being bullied. About 70 percent of youth ages 12-19 have witnessed some type bullying but did not act on the incident. Thousands of bullying cases go unresolved, and in the James Jones incident the same was happening. On September 03, 2010, James Jones' 10 year old daughter told her parents of the problems she was having on her school bus with bullies and then Jones, in an attempt to defend his daughter, entered her school bus and began to scold his daughter's alleged tormentors.
