Louis Riel - Distinguished Champion

History was at its turning point and the beginning of Canada's identity were in the making in the late nineteenth century. Many influential characters arose during that period of time, achieving great success and valor. Louis Riel was one of them; he fought for equality and protected the Métis from being exterminated by the British. Born in St. Boniface at the Red River Settlement on October 22, 1844, Louis Riel anticipated that he one day would follow his father's path and become an extraordinary Métis leader just like him. Eventually, Riel was seen as a hero to the French-speaking Métis. In the west side of Canada, however, most people viewed him as a villain due to his execution in 1885. Nevertheless, Louis Riel was not truly a rebel; only a flawed man who made many faults in his life. Today many more people are seeing him as a dedicated person, and recognizing the numerous contributions that he made to building Canada up as a nation. He was unquestionably a Can

Also the time Americans were afraid of communist, because they thought every communist would be out to destroy America, Americans were afraid that the communist would take their rights away, also all Americans should be treated fairly and should not have their lives dictated. McCarthyism is a time-period that is best known for its cruel and insane accusations of supposed betrayal and disloyalty. Same-Sex Couples and Adoption

In the United States citizens have the privilege of equal rights. Every citizen has the freedom to do as they please with their own lives as long as one is not violating the laws that are in place. Some of the rights every citizen has are stated within the constitution and there are also rights extended to everyone beyond this. Some of our rights within the Bill of Rights are freedom of religion, speedy trial, petition, speech; furthermore our rights beyond this are freedom of privacy, occupation, marriage, and residence. A person literally can map out their entire life and how they would like to spend each day. When ethical dilemmas conflict with these freedoms, the law tends to intervene. Sometimes, when one uses his or her rights in an ethically wrong way, one suffers the repercussions of the law because the action is considered ethically wrong. Such as one using his or her freedom of religion as means to justify murdering someone, or if one delivers a hate speech. These are both ob

Open and Accountable Canadian Government

In today's society political decisions exemplifies a paradox. To illustrate, this paradox reveals the ideology that politics is the underlying factor of power, with the autonomy of utility. Added to this, ethics is the basis of principle, which is lead by moralities. The correlations between the two variables are the cornerstone of transparency and accountability. In this case, federal cabinet ministers misused their public authority, and were not upholding the doctrine of ministerial responsibility. For these reasons, there was a lack of confidence in the government's ability, which resulted in a low voters turnout. In fact, the 2011 federal election recorded the second lowest voter turnout at 53.8 per cent (Unknown, 2012). Inevitably, the public's stance of the government has been negative. Nevertheless, there are political figures that exercise their autonomy with the goal of changing the public's perception. For example, Prime Minister Stephen Harper is constantly projecting new go

Judges in American Federal and State Systems

Explain how judges are selected in the Federal and in state systems across the United States. What factors will be likely to determine the viability of a judicial candidate under any system? United States of America is a federal republic with a division of powers (legislative, executive and judiciary) between the federal authorities and the state authorities. The range of independence held by states is a very disputable question which historically raised many conflicts (the most vivid being the American Civil War). Each state has slightly different legal system, however the highest court in U.S (Supreme Court) has a jurisdiction over whole territory of the country. As it was mentioned, there are two main court systems in America: a federal court system and a state court system. A federal court system has jurisdiction over cases such as violating federal regulations (taxes, civil rights, etc), international disputes, intellectual property issues, bankruptcy matters and disp

Methods of Effective Teaching

Education is one of the most important thing a child can receive. However, having a teacher that can positively instruct and impact a child's life is an effective teacher. Every child is not the same, due to this reason; teachers have to make modifications lesson plan to accommodate their students. It is crucial for a teacher to be effective in the classroom. Teachers who have students in their class may follow the four instructional practices: Universal Design for Learning, Differentiated instructions, modifications, and accommodations. Effective teaching is when a teacher can successfully impact and educate students in a positive manner. Being an effective teacher includes being well prepared and educated on the subject that is being taught, having a positive attitude towards students, and the ability to answer questions or problems a student might have. Students are not the exact same. Some childre

Canada, America and the War of 1812

The War of 1812 was a war fought between the United States and Great-Britain, at the time Canada was colonized by the British and was invaded by the Americans multiple times throughout the war. The war lasted from 1812-1814, and begun due to decades of tension between the two forces. Most of the tension originated from the Revolutionary War, where Great-Britain employed war methods that simply aggravated the United States. The British use of impressment had a huge effect on the start of the war, for the British it provided them with the necessary amount of men to fight the war and man their ships. This frustrated the Americans because the British had American-born men working their ships. There is no widely agreed on winner to the war as it is still a very controversial topic, but if I had to decide it seemed that Canada prevailed. Even though the British colonized Canada at the time and fought against the Americans they abandoned their Aboriginal friends just as they had done many tim

The World Overcome by Conformity

"Conformity is the jailer of freedom and the enemy of growth" – John F. Kennedy. This quote shows that conformity is the act of being the same as others and does not allow freedom or growth in a society. This relates to the book, Anthem, because one of the major themes is conformity. In Ayn Rand's Anthem, the author presents the theme that conformity restricts people from being individuals through the characterizations of dialogue, reaction of others and action or incident for the characters of the Council. The Council shows conformity through the dialogue exchanged between those in the Council and between the Council and others. When Equality showed the Council of Scholars his invention, Collective 0-0009 said, "'How dared you think that your mind held greater wisdom than the minds of your brothers?'" (Rand 71). Equality is beginning to become an individual and the society does not accept that. The laws of the society state that all things must be done as a gr

Acting Techniques of Stanislavski

The Magic If The "magic if" is a method acting technique, where an actor must try to answer the question "what would I do IF I were the character or in their situation?" Stanislavski thought that an actor cannot genuinely believe in the reality of events on the stage to be true, but he said that an actor could believe in the possibility of the events. It is used to strongly stimulate the actor's inner creativity and it transports the actor into the imaginary circumstances. "The Magic If" is a powerful stimulus to the actor's thoughts, imagination, and his logical actions. It allows the actor to explore new emotions and helps to put you in the character's shoes. It gives a "feeling of truth" and makes an actor's actions more believable to both him and the audience. Emotion Memory Another technique, which came from Stanislavski's belief of realistic acting, is Emotional Memory, also known

Techniques of Advertising

In this day and age, the factor that may contribute to a product's success more than quality, price, or accessibility is the way it is marketed or advertised. A lot of times, it just so happens that an excellent product fails and gets outsold by an inferior competitor due to lacking in the advertisement campaign. Especially now, since humans are exposed to so many types of screens and billboards, companies are spending a lot of money to try and fill up as much advertisement space on as many mediums they can possibly find in order to drill their product into people's heads. Companies use a variety of methods in order for their marketing to stick to the public ranging from comedy to celebrity endorsements to complete bombardment of commercials. Very few products and brands are an exception when it comes to these techniques and mass marketing in general. Whether they want to or not, this has become the way to sell, the way to tell the billions of people on this planet that they have made

Symbolism of Windows in Madame Bovary

People stare out windows quite often, sometimes without realizing what they are actually doing. While looking out windows, people search for the truth behind their thoughts, instead of just looking outside. In the novel, Flaubert uses windows for various reasons and associates them with different characters. Flaubert mainly associates windows with Emma. She often stares out the window, sometimes to see what is outside, but most of the time to look within herself. In the novel, Madame Bovary, Gustave Flaubert uses the motif of windows to highlight Emma's desires, limitations, and corruption. Flaubert uses windows to convey Emma's unhappiness and show her desires as she longs for a more exquisite, more interesting life instead of the life provided for her. Towards the end of the ball in Vaubyessard, she leans out the window in order "to prolong the illusion of this luxurious life that she would have to abandon in a short while" (51-52). The diction within this sentence emphasi

The Power of Silence

There is something incredibly beautiful in the way two souls can be together in absolute silence, but completely understand what one another is going through at that moment in their life. I have no idea if everyone is fortunate enough to experience this at least once in their lifetime, however I am confident that I share this type of connection with another. It only makes sense that deeply emotional situations would bring out this connection between two people and that is what happened to me. Silence is pure; it draws people together because only those who are comfortable with each other can sit and be content without speaking. The person I share this connection with is Travis, who I dated for over a year and is still a very special part of my life. From the very beginning we quickly formed a unique bond. It was obvious that we were at ease with each other and never felt awkward or disconnected from one another. We shared times in the car just simply listening to music and enjoying each others' company wit

Promoting Creativity in Children

Imagine an eight-year-old girl, full of ideas and curiosity, unsettled and hyperactive, and the most important quality is that she is not afraid of being wrong. She has a big juicy brain full of original and authentic beliefs, but probably for some people she is extremely annoying. Suddenly, some teacher at math class says she has a learning disorder because she is not able to concentrate. He says that probably she has ADHD. Next, her mom takes her to see a specialist, now she is watching how mom explains everything that is supposedly wrong to the doctor, but he turns on the radio that was sitting on his desk. Suddenly she feels her feet randomly moving and she cannot stop. They are watching her and for a few minutes she feels free and out of the world. The doctor notices her energy and fantastic potential, and he convinces mom to take her to a dance school. At the moment she enters to the room, she notices it is full of people like her. People who cannot sit still, people who have to

Achieving The American Dream

I would like to begin by presenting an abridged account of what I believe to be the American Dream. The American Dream is, to me, not an individualistic concept, but rather, a collective one. It is the achievement of a higher-order state of being on a national scale; a collective consciousness that is unified in its enlightenment and reform. A dream not centered on any individual's capacity to acquire materials, but one that places its emphasis on psychic harmony as the necessary predicate to ultimately achieve a higher standard of living for all. My American Dream is not my career, my car, or my castle; it is not an end but a means to an end, a means that collects the cooperation and talents of each individual, yet remains greater than the sum of its parts. Tolerance towards differences in each person's or groups of peoples' race, sexual orientation, gender and lifestyle is critical to the realization of the dream described above, as this branch of tolerance is evidently progressive

Immigration Laws in the United States

At one time, the nationality of a person was determined by the principle of jus sanguinis (right of blood),a tenet of the Roman law which it is still prominent in European countries This establish that an individual belongs to a family, or a tribe, not to a specific territory. It was not until the dates from Cleisthenes' reforms of ancient Athenian law that the principle of jus soli (right of the soil) was developed. And it was later after the English colonies in America got their independency that this principle was adopted in the new society of the United States. The just soil principle is the right of anyone born in the territory of a state to have the nationality or the citizenship of that state. This is associated with birth rights to obtain a citizenship. According to a study of the Center for Immigration Study in 2010 found that only 30 of the world's 194 countries grant citizenship at birth to the children of undocumented foreign residents, (Feere, Jon). This is the situation

Research Essay - Death with Dignity

If I were terminally ill, would I want to be euthanized so that I would not suffer anymore? In a couple of states our country, including Oregon and Washington it is legal to die through euthanasia also known as assisted suicide. Oregon was the first state to pass this type of law, commonly known as the Death with Dignity Act. This is a debatable topic because there is several pros and cons to both, which are either pro life or pro choice. It is a topic the average American should know about because they may know someone who might be in that predicament within their lifespan. I was torn between which side of the argument I would choose because I believe that both sides have valid points, but I believe more states should adopt this law. I choose this topic because I want to learn more about it, there are many of counter arguments, and it will make an interesting research paper.

Heaven is Beyond Positive

Have you ever sat and wondered what is really positive in your life? Is it your children, your dog, your job, your husband, or yourself? I have sat around many years wondering if my life would ever be positive; it felt that no matter what I tried I seemed to stay in a depressed mood all the time. It seemed all I did was lay around in bed feeling as though my world had come to an end. That is one feeling I can say I would never wish upon anyone even my worst enemy (Johnson). The one thing I remained doing through all my feelings is going to church, I felt that if anything could help me it would be God. So every time I went to church I would expect some miracle to take place and it never happened. It seemed that I just kept falling deeper and deeper into the dark. All I wanted was someone to come and pull me out of the dark and save me from myself. The question I had to ask myself was do I keep trying or just give up? Am I strong enough to hold on un

The Benefits of Watching Television

The television was invented by J.L. Baird of Scotland in the year 1944. It's been 68 years now, and television is an inescapable part of our modern 21st century culture. We depend on the television for entertainment, news, education, culture, weather, sports and even music since the advent of music videos. People normally associate television as "the idiot box". In order to experience life in a positive manner, we are usually asked to look at the glass half full rather than half empty, we can actually use the same principle when we are discussing about television. We can either use the television to gain knowledge or use it for all the wrong purpose in which the saying "idiot box" is then correctly used. Nowadays, there are many programs on television that can provide us with much information and it can help us to increase our general knowledge and see how wide and vast is the world. The Role of Preproduction in Coraline

Coraline is an animated film, and its development required fastidious preproduction and production. Due to the nature of the film, each second required 24 distinct shots, and an animator can only complete two to seven seconds of footage per week. The preproduction involved is similar to that of a non-animated film, if not more demanding. The puppet-actors appearing on screen have to be well thought out and designed; locations, clothes, and props have to be chosen and designed, and the shots have to be sorted by location and assigned to various animators. But even before any of this, the plot has to be created, along with a script and storyboard. The script has to be very clear so that props can be created accordingly. In fact, it takes the costume artist at least six weeks to design and knit a single piece of clothing, and some take up to 6 months. Thus the clothes represent a significant investment and must be sure to satisfy the intent

Booms And Busts of the United States

The United States has gone through periods of dramatic growth known as "booms" as well as periods of crisis known as "busts." These booms and busts didn't occur out of nowhere. There were causes that led up to these economic cycles. During the 1920's, which later on became to be known as the "Roaring Twenties", the United States economy grew rapidly due to people spending on new goods as well as new ideas for a better lifestyle were born. Prior to the 1920's, only the rich were able to obtain the luxuries while the working class lived in poor conditions. But during this time period, people were able to spend money so when the new goods came out, they bought them in hopes that it would help improve their lives. Some of those goods were telephones, radios, refrigerators, microwaves, cars, and other things. Besides the consumption of goods, another industry that helped the 1920's boom in the United States was the credit industry. Before, only people who were well off could borr

In My Sister's Shoes

Everyone has a story; stories that are self-defining, stories that explain circumstance and stories that change the course of life. People evolve into their current selves as a result of their surroundings and what they allow to influence their psyche. These influences are can be precipitated by government, religion, family dynamics and environment. For some people, there is an innate struggle to develop into who they want to be because, in truth, they are not always the narrators of their own story. Often times, individuals are forced to play a role that is foreign to their nature and attempt to live their lives in the shadow of a character in which they are encouraged by others to play. This is my story. I come from an immigrant family who set goals for their lives and family immediately upon arrival. Their dreams would have longevity through their daughters. I am the middle daughter in my strong willed Guyanese family and I was fortunate to have an older sister blazed an incredible trail for her sisters. This blazing trail, however, set me on fire. As far as my parents were concerned, there was o

The Hidden Evils of Tradition

The traditions of a society are a significant representation of the history, faith, and language of the group. However, allowing tradition to blindly influence human relationships and interactions can be harmful. Shirley Jackson's "The Lottery" depicts the consequences that relate to society's quest for perfection through tradition. Characters strive to solidify tradition but they become blindly influenced by their ambition in the process. Similarly, "Battle Royal" by Ralph Ellison conveys the way African Americans behaved when choosing between their natural self and what was expected of them as members of society. Essentially, the stories target the negative effect tradition holds on human relationships and interactions from a psychological point of view. The irony of the title, "The Lottery" as well as the banquet hall setting in "Battle Royale" depict the hidden violence behind tradition. Additionally, the motifs that drives the characters and

The Life of Bob Marley

Robert Nesta Marley, more commonly known as Bob Marley, was the greatest and most influential reggae musicians of the 20th Century. His music did more than just make people sing and dance, it brought people together in a way that no one else could. His lyrics travelled the world, bringing peace and happiness to the most violent of places, and his legacy did end with his death. Bob Marley's music continues to touch the hearts and souls of millions of people worldwide and deliver a message of hope to all. His music openly discuses the cultural and political issues at the time and provides talking points to tackle the difficult subjects present in Jamaica in the 60s and 70s when political violence and racial discrimination were huge problems for Jamaicans. Bob Marley was fit to heal the country with his music because he was of no particular political party and was also abused because of his mixed racial background. Marley was also one of the most popular advocate of the Rastafari movemen

Women in Shakespearian Comedies

One of the main topics of interest in the field of Shakespearian studies is that which considers the various roles that women play in the Shakespeare's comedies and tragedies. Literary and historical scholars agree that women did not enjoy political, economic, or social parity with men during Shakespeare's time, and this historical reality is important to keep in mind when analyzing the variety of female characters in the plays of Shakespeare. In this Shakespearean society, it was men who held exclusively the official posts of authority and power, and men who kept the agency and influence to direct the outcome of events. Nevertheless, the careful reader notices a curious trend in many of Shakespeare's plays: many of Shakespeare's female characters exercise a rather great deal of delicate forms of power and influence, and often do so in unusual and even subversive ways that challenge traditional gender roles. Although the male characters generally fail to notice or refuse to acknowledg
