Barriers to Immigrant Achievement

Immigrant children, more so than native born children come to face a variety of circumstances, such as low family income, poor education, and language confinement. These factors act as barriers and place them at risk of developmental delay and dissatisfactory academic performance upon entering school. I will be conducting research regarding the matter of children moving into Canada, and the barriers that they face. My hypothesis states the barriers that immigrant children and their families encounter, bring a negative affect to their academic performance. The article "Early care and Education for Children in Immigrant Families," written by Karoly and Gonzalez, examine the current role of and future possibility that early care and education (ECE) programs have in promoting healthy development for immigrant children. Overall, immigrant children have lower rates of participation in these non-parental care programs than their native counterparts. Karoly and Gonzalez summarize this by

Truman and the Soviet Union - 1945-1949

Following a catastrophic second world war, only two nations stood above the ashes of the world; the United States and the Soviet Union. The Soviet Union had control over much of eastern Europe and it was of great concern of the U.S that the Soviet's spread their influence to the weak western European countries. The Soviet Union was a single party state and held a communist economic system that the U.S wanted to hold a 'containment' foreign policy towards. Containment was first described in Defense Secretary George Kennan's Long Telegram. In it, he described Soviet power as scattered and dangerous, and claimed that it must be contained. Truman handled the nation's containment policy with great success that kept the democratic and free market integrity of western Europe. Through Truman's use of economic aid to suffering european countries, establishing military links with pro-democratic nations, and his firmness when responding to threatening soviet acts, Truman handled the soviet

GMOs - Too Much of a Good Thing

Are farmers taking short cuts to maximize their profits at the expense of humans health? In fact, when farmers take short-cuts by making genetically engineered seeds they are not just hurting humans, they're also hurting themselves. To begin with, by creating genetically engineered crops they are hurting the farms because they are creating superweeds which are now hard to kill. They're also hurting the environment because they contaminate organic plants and crops. People should try to eliminate genetically modified foods because they will increase health problems, they will increase superweeds, and they hurt the environment. Genetically modified food is bad for humans, and it will increase health problems for them. Genetically modified food/ crops hurt animals: "In 1990's rats were forced to eat gmos because they refused to eat it, the rat's then got stomach lesions, two weeks later seven of the forty rat's died"(Food & Water Watch 1). Genetically modified food is bad for th

History of the Colosseum

Introduction In the last decade of Vespasian's rule, uprisings and disasters around Rome and the Roman Empire were bringing his fame as a ruler down to levels that he did not like. To help get the Roman peoples admiration and votes back, he decided to give them a present like no other with the money and riches gained from the Siege of Jerusalem and the Jewish Temple; a feat that would last over 2 millennia and rival the biggest stadiums in today's "modern" world. He gave them the Colosseum, otherwise known as the Flavian Theatre. A political statement, as well as a statement of the astounding technology that Roman builders possessed, the Colosseum has stood for nearly 2,000 years, and although not nearly in the perfect state it was in when built, it has not fallen prey to the elements. Today, very few architects, and engineers can actually replicate, or even describe the very complex techniques that went into the building of the structure. Part of the reason for this is that

The Imperfect Family

What's your idea of a perfect family? Is there a perfect family? What is the normal family? Growing up I learned that the word family described exactly what I didn't have at home. Seeing all my friends with their families made me realize I wanted that more than anything, I wanted to feel comfortable with my family I wanted to feel like I wasn't such a screw up and I made a difference to my family. Being an only child I soon learned I would be on my own for many of life's challenges that other children had help from siblings for. When I was about 6 years old I recall my father acting very strangely and my mom described it as him acting "weird." So I guess my six year old mind went along with it for awhile. In the fourth or fifth grade our guidance counselor at school came into visit us and talks to us about drugs and alcohol. The more she talked, the more I started to connect the things she was saying to the ways my dad was acting. I later learn

Confucious and Aristotle on Virtue

Confucius and Aristotle were two philosophers of two very different and distinct backgrounds. Confucius' ideas were spawned as a result of his immersion and presence in the ancient Chinese culture while Aristotle's ideas were as a result of his immersion and presence in the ancient Greek culture. In spite of this, however, both touched on subjects of a similar nature quite frequently, including the concept of virtue, or of being of a good ethical character. Through a comparison of the teachings of the two individuals with the notions of virtue or good moral character and conduct will allow first for a determination of the similarities and differences between the two viewpoints. This information will then become possible to determine what those variations suggest about the differences between the two cultures. This comparison will make it possible to suggest ideas of virtue that may applied to ethics in a modern setting, such as a diverse workplace. Confucius, due in large part to the

The Stranger in My Life

I could always hear them. I don't know if they thought I was asleep, that I was too young to understand the altercation, or if they neglected my presence altogether. Either way, every night I could hear them. I'd pretend to be asleep whenever my mother would come in to check on me, but I'd lie awake listening until eventually I heard a door slam and a car back out of the driveway and into the gloomy night. It was usually my mother who was lucky enough to get out of the house. Unlucky for me, I was left alone in the house. With him. Growing up, it had always been just my mother and me. My biological father abandoned me at birth and hadn't been heard from since. The sting of abandonment had me in and out of counselor's offices for a few years, but I eventually grew to really enjoy the bond my mother and I had created. We didn't have much money. In fact, even that would be an understatement. We were living in a trailer park, getting benefits from the state, and I learned at an early age

Aristotle and the Search for Happiness

Nicomachean Ethics is arguably Aristotle's best known work on ethics. The work consists of ten books which originally were his lecture notes at the Lyceum that were later edited by his son, Nicomachus. Throughout the work, Aristotle spends the majority of his books providing his account of what he believes to be human beings' ultimate goal, one that is self-sufficient and absolute final. He also shows his belief regarding virtues and the method of upholding them. Aristotle argues that the ultimate end in life is eudaimonia, or happiness; in order to achieve this goal, one must act in accordance with virtue, the "golden mean" in between excess and deficiency. Aristotle argues that the ultimate goal that we all seek is happiness. He claims that every human activity is a stepping stone towards a goal that human beings consider "good". This goal's goodness does not necessarily have to be considered as good by others; it must be perceived as good for the person who comm

Biography of Stephen Hawking

Who is the best author of all times? Obviously everyone has their own opinion but I think that the top three authors are J.K Rowling, Suzanne Collins and Stephen Hawking. J.K Rowling was born on July 31st 1965 in Chipping Sudbury, Gloucestershire. She started writing the Harry Potter series in a coffee shop while her two daughters were taking a nap. I enjoy reading J.K Rowling's book series Harry Potter because they take you out of this world and when you read it feels like you are in a whole new world. The Harry Potter series has since then won numerous awards and become a tremendous success around the world. Suzanne Marie Collins was born on August 10, 1962 and started her writing career by writing as a writer for a television show. She got the idea of The Hunger Games from her father. Since her father was in the military she heard many stories about poverty, starvation and the effect of war that inspired her to write The Hunger Games. I enjoy reading Suzanne Collins book series The

Biography of Amelia Earhart

Amelia Earhart defied all odds by becoming a pilot. Women were not encouraged to join predominately male careers because it went against their nature. Earhart was the first woman to fly across the Atlantic, but she faced many challenges while striving to achieve that title. Earhart's early years were a little rough since she moved around a lot with her family. School work was never a problem though because she kept her grades up. She was in control of her own destiny from a very young age (Sherman, 2012). Her father took her to the Iowa State Fair when she was ten years old and that is where she saw her first plane. Earhart was not impressed with the exhibit at all. After graduating from school, she was drafted into World War I, where she served as a nurse with the Volunteer Aid Detachment for St John's Ambulance Brigade (Sherman, 2012). In 1920, Amelia joined Frank Hawks on a plane ride that changed her life forever. Her fascination with aviation had begun and she knew immediately that becoming a pilot and flying on her own was her ultimate goal. She states, "After midnight, the moon set, and I was alone with the stars. I have often said that

Literary Analysis - The Ballot or the Bullet

El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz, mostly known as Malcolm X, delivered the Ballot or the Bullet speech on April 3 of 1964 at a CORE (Congress of Racial Equality) meeting in Cleveland, Ohio. Race dominated the domestic agenda of America at the time. Also, a bill for outlawing segregation (Civil Rights Act of 1964) in public places was up for debate in Congress. The speech came a month after Martin Luther King Jr. gave his significant I Have a Dream speech. The speech was also was given a short time after Malcolm X announced that he was separating from the Nation of Islam and declared his Black Nationalist philosophy, a topic heavily discussed throughout the speech. The speech got its' title in reference to 1964 being the year that Lyndon B. Johnson was going to run for re-election. Throughout the speech, Malcolm X had tried to encourage Afro-Americans, as he referred to them, to increase their involvement in voters' registration and other political engagement. He made reference comparing the tw

A Moveable Feast and Midnight in Paris

"A Moveable Feast" and "A Midnight in Paris" are a comparison and contradistinction, for the fact that although they delve into the same focus and era, such as –literature, modernism, art, food and philosophy, the experiences and ideas in which a new perspective throws upon the old; is a generating and thought provoking concept which the comparisons between the eras is distinctly seen. Reframing these perceptions, are the texts of Ernest Hemingway and Woody Allen. Hemingway's context and purpose of his novel is a flowing mind scheme, in which his thoughts and actions were put into words. Paris, its people, places, art, and the startling culture of modernism was an accumulation of his memoirs, and he presented them in this particular way, so our grasp and familiarity of the place and time in Paris would not be lost. On the other hand, Allen spoke of the purpose and approach to the sense of reflexivity in texts, along with the contextualized traits of postmodern

Analysis of Hamlet's Ophelia

The tragedy of Hamlet was an extremely fascinating play with a lot of people exceptionally intriguing characters that did an incredible numerous chivalrous and baffling things regardless of the complexity and difficulty to comprehend the genuine identity William Shakespeare expected for each. Ophelia represents one of the two ladies caught between men set out for reprisal. In spite of not having too many lines throughout the play, her effect on the play was truly significant. Nonetheless, a standout amongst the most imperative inquiries to examine, and the inquiry this paper will investigate underneath is the reason she went mad. This paper will analyze what sort of individual Shakespeare depicts her as, why she is so effectively influenced, the variables creating her madness and the criticalness each of them play. One of the elements that may have been the beginning reason for the inconvenience Ophelia ended up with towards the end of the play may be her excellence. This is describe

Black Boy and the Great Migration

Throughout the novel, "Black Boy," Richard Wright addresses the many effects of racism on the black American. White America has more power through education than Black America; however, black America has more power and knowledge through experience rather than education. The idea of Marxism is that those with wealth are the ones who have the most power over others; wealth is in the hands of the few. In systematic racism, although an individual does not have racist thoughts, racism still persists in them. Through systematic racism, discrimination of blacks is pursued and kept alive in the American society. Though Wright and many others thought that by taking part in the Great Migration would help their current situation and eliminate the discrimination they are undergoing during that time, once they reached the north they encountered new types of racism that was unknown before. They also encountered new forms of love and compassion that were unfamiliar and scary to them. Throughout the novel, Wright explores many of the upsides and downfalls to the great Migration to the North.

Consequences of Having Too Little

Introduction "Having too little" is a phrase that is attributed to the poverty stricken people in a society. The Poor hardly have the resources to meet even their most basic needs such as food and clothing. Research shows that the poor form the largest part of the world's population. Many articles have been written by different authors in an attempt to try explain the existence of this state. According to the information that I obtained from my research, many authors have pointed out that how people organize the few resources they have is what will classify them to the social class that they belong to the society, either poor or rich. The poor are found to lead a lifestyle that reinforces the poverty conditions in their daily activities. In our discussion, we shall concentrate mostly on the ideas of Anuj K. Shah in his article, "Some Consequences Of Having Little." Anuj in his work tries to find out the cause of poverty in the society through making an in depth analysis of how

Earbuds in My Ear

As we make our way to the biggest rivalry in town, I lie here on this torn wrinkly brown leather, with ear buds in my ear, my Letterman jacket just under my head, like a mothers arm holding her baby, and the words you've thrown at me really strike me. "You missed out on a lot just by being a part of this stupid football team." "Am I really the one that's missed a lot." If I hadn't join the team 6 years back, I could only imagine where I would be in life. You are only enjoying your present moment, careless of the fact that you're making your future tougher by the decisions make. If only you could see through the eyes of the person you once were, then you would understand. This isn't grade 6 anymore. A lot has changed; being mister tough guy isn't the guy I see myself as and neither should you. But I guess we're just two different people. If you can't change your lifestyle according to mine, then what makes you think I will literally throw away my life in order to su

The Life and Work of Frida Kahlo

Frida Kahlo de Rivera, a Mexican artist, was born on July 6, 1907. under the name of Magdalena Carmen Frieda Kahlo y Calderon in Coyoacan, Mexico City. Her father, Wilhelm Kahlo was a painter and a photographer, and he was Jewish. He was a very kind man, introvert and withdrawn, he played the piano and read German philosophers. On the other hand, her mother, a devout Catholic, was illiterate, unsatisfied and mostly indisposed. Frida Kahlo was born immediately after the death of Wilhelm's first wife. She had two older and three younger half-sisters. When she was six years old she got sick of poliomyelitis and because of that, she was lying in bed for nine months in pain. After her recovery, as a consequence of the disease, one leg was shorter and thinner, and because of that she was mocked by her peers. However, that didn't discourage her. She wasn't ashamed, she was very proud, defiant and she turned her imperfection into advantage. Her mother was always pitying her, but her father wa

Disadvantages of Single Parenting

The family structure of a two-parent household has changed significantly over the years. The dynamics of relationships are constantly evolving and families face much more separations, divorce, or non-committed relationships with children being born out of wedlock. Because of failed relationships, or "freedom of choice", more children today face living in a single parent environment for all or a part of their lives. The majority of single parenting households are women, due to in separations they usually take the children with them. The results of single parenting can be both negative and positive on a child. There are three categories in which single parenting can have a disadvantage on a child with economic stress, time management, and child behavior. One disadvantage of becoming a single parent is the economic stress. Unless you are receiving financial support from the other parent, you are probably the sole financial provider. Moreover, this can add major stress. A one-i

Women in The Epic of Gilgamesh

The epic of Gilgamesh is translated by Benjamin R Foster a story whose main theme is finding your strength in adventures. On every step of his journey, there was a woman who was guiding him through every Adventure. Women played a very important role throughout the story, giving Gilgamesh the strength, confidence, and courage to breakthrough his difficult circumstances. Gilgamesh was the next heir to become King. However, his issues with morality in society didn't resonate well with his fellow people. He was overtly inappropriate with females by initiating violent sexual acts on them, costing the could be future Queens at their spot in higher society because after Gilgamesh attacked them, the young women no longer held purity in the eyes of the citizens. Despite his disapproving actions and negative attitude towards women, his guiding source was either a woman or a man sent by a woman. When his journey first begins, his mother Rimat-Ninsun, also known as The Wild Cow would pray to Sha

Descartes and External Objects

Descartes doubted everything. He wondered if there was anything he could know for certain. He pondered through the questions of God, ideas and the existence of external objects. He searched for answers to these questions even if the answer he received was that nothing can be known for certain. Even though Descartes knew they there was a chance that his judgment was not correct. He believed and justified the belief of the existence of external objects. He composed certain arguments to justify his beliefs which are demonstrated in his second and fourth meditations. In Descartes second meditation he proposes that the only reason that could give physical objects a reality is the effect of how are mind perceives them. (Descartes, 31) It is the rational characteristics that our mind attaches to any physical objects. In order to prove this he gives an example of wax. Descartes slowly examines a piece of wax, and he takes in all essential characteristics that a piece of wax has such as colo

Sickle Cell Anemia and Cell Disease

Abstract This research project will focus on the study of sickle cell anemia. This paper will focus on many key points. It will focus on what sickle cell anemia is, how a person may obtain or transfer this disease, and the function of cells carrying sickle cell anemia. I have chosen to do research on sickle cell anemia because I am a carrier of this disease. I hope in doing this research it will broaden my view on the potential dangers of this disease and if it can be passed on to my own offspring. Sickle Cell Anemia/ Sickle Cell Disease Definition "Sickle cell anemia (SCA) is an inherited form of anemia- a condition in which there is not enough healthy red blood cells to carry adequate oxygen throughout your body" (Mayo Clinic Staff). Sickle cell anemia is a dangerous disease, it can be inherited through genetics, and can cause potential death. This can be inherited from the genes of both parents or from the genes of one single parent. If one parent has this gene then

Research Report - African Lions

The African Lion is a fearsome mammal with sharp claws that are retractable. These claws can be 1.5 inches or more long (Lions of Africa). They also have soft pads on their paws to allow them to move quietly (Lions of Africa). The body of the lion is covered in a sandy brown colored fur that camouflages them to the golden-yellow grass that surrounds them (Hofer 1). The male lions have a mane that covers the back of the head and the shoulders (Lions of Africa). The eyes of the lion are well adapted to the darkness so they can hunt in the night (Lions of Africa). The lions are the only cat that has a tassel at the tip of the tail. The tassel contains the last tailbones fused together. The teeth of this magnificent beast are extremely sharp and adapted to kill its prey (Lions of Africa). The whiskers are used to sense their surroundings in the dark and they use their rough tongue to clean themselves and drink water from pools and puddles. The African Lion lives in groups called pride an

The Art of Video Games

It is difficult to determine whether something is a work of art or not, the definition of art varies with time and thinkers. Marcel Mauss for instance, states that an object is a work of art when a group of people consider it is one. This analysis raises the fundamental link between the work of art and the population, the relation between the creator, the product and the spectator. Art federates and divides, it is a medium of communication, a way to send a message to be exposed at the eyes of everybody. Art itself exists by the exposition of the work of art and the regular individual becomes the artist when someone calls him artist for the first time. Hence the importance of the reflection on the importance of the public and the place of the spectator in the definition of art. Long story short, art is about communication, links, bounds, messages. The history of video games starts in the early 50's where the first experiments are made in order to use machines in a ludic way. However t

The Affordable Care Act

Every citizen should be able and allowed to obtain health care insurance regardless of age, pre-existing conditions, financial means or anything of that nature. The Affordable Care Act entitles everyone to an affordable healthcare plan. This will help ensure that low income citizens be given the same opportunities for healthcare as the wealthy or citizens who can afford private insurance. Some of the cons of this program are that premiums are rising; people are paying more in taxes for a program they are not utilizing, as well as the prices of medical services being increased. The topics I am going to discussing are as follows: the pros of the Affordable Care Act and the cons of the Affordable Care Act. I will also discuss my view on the Act and how this act is affecting the citizens of the United States. I have encountered many people that this new Affordable Care Act has impacted in a beneficial manner. No one including children will no longer be denied or limited to health care plans for pre-existing conditions. Every year, since 2010, there have been many improvements in the
