Qualitative and Quantitative ResearchA strong debate within the field of psychology, and that of the social sciences more generally, has existed almost as long as the field itself; qualitative versus quantitative research methods. Research is presented as distinctly qualitative or quantitative, with some attempts at an integrative approach [ CITATION Sec95 l 3081 f "see " m Yan06 ]. Other research has attempted to clarify the definitions of each method. It is of little value to research to establish a 'better' kind of method; rather, clearer instructions for how to employ various research methods to deliver unbiased and ethical research are needed for the social sciences. Rather than simply commentate on the two research methods, this paper aims to compare and contrast quantitative and qualitative research methods. A brief overview of qualitative and quantitative research methods will be followed by a comparison between the two approaches and a demonstration of how various research techniques are used in either a qu |

Eviornmental EthicsAlex Johnson Environmental Ethic So what is an ethic? An ethic is a set of moral principles or guidelines by which people ought to live. In other words an ethic is comprised of standards that people believe in, and set fourth for themselves that deal with right and wrong and have a duty or obligation attached. So what then is an environmental ethic you ask? An environmental ethic is a set of moral principles or guidelines by which people ought to live by in relationship to the environment. It's all about right and wrong ways to treat or use the environment, and our obligations and responsibilities to the environment. As the human race God gave us the responsibility to care for the Earth. In Genesis 1: 26 God says, "Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, and over all the creatures that move along the ground." First I feel we need to define dominion. Accor |

Mandatory Drug ScreeningShould drug testing be mandatory to gain employment? Many people would argue that it should not be done, possibly just as many people would argue that it should be. The reasons for a company to require drug screening are surely different from the reason the government would require for legal matters. Whatever the differences are isn't what matters, what matters is the importance that a company has placed on the screening results. There are many arguments as to why drug screening should not be mandatory, one of those arguments is that a person's privacy is being violated. Each company, however, should have the right to screen for drugs to ensure the safety of their company, the safety other employees, and keep workplace injuries at a minimum. W |

The Ego of OedipusAccording to the story, Oedipus accuses Kreon of trying to take his place as king and Teiresias acted as if he didn't know what was going on in the first scene, "Why, he is no more clairvoyant than I am!" After accusing Kreon of this crime, Oedipus has realized that he has placed his "curse" ironically upon himself than on Teirasias or Kreon. The curse that Oedipus articulates is: "May I never see the day! Never! Rather let me vanish from the race of men, Than know the abomination destined me!" When Oedipus finds out the truth in Scene 3, he says: "O light, may I look on you for the last time! I, Oedipus, Oedipus, damned in his birth, in his marriage damned, Damned in his blood he shed with his own hand! Oedipus was an evil person who married his mother, killed his father and caused pain |

The Benefits of FailureFailing at a task is typically looked at as a bad thing, but failing is human and failing is something we all have experienced. I believe it is how I react to failure that will determine my future success. To get better at something, I know I must be persistent and not to be afraid to try to do something that is harder than what I have done before. In order to improve, I know I must take on more difficult challenges and progressively harder tasks. Failing for me is not always bad and failing is motivation for me to achieve something. For that matter, failure is only failure if you decide to quit and never proceed past that point. One of my earliest recollections of failure that I experienced was trying to ride a bike. At the time I was about five or six years old. I remember watching my brother ride his bike and I wanted to be just like him, so I was going to try my hardest to ride my bike. My dad had taken off the training wheels and I started out riding on the grass. I had fallen dozens of times before I got the hold of it. Once I was able to ride it a good twenty or thirty feet, dad and I took my bike to the street. |

The beast also invokes a mob mentality causing the boys to act savagely. Once we face one of these events, our lives and personalities may be altered permanently, and we are left to wonder what would have been different had this event not happened. The play, Hamlet by William Shakespeare, is the perfect example of a "coming of age" archetype. The audience meets the main character, Hamlet, when he is a college student. Hamlet experiences multiple events that forever change his personality over the course of the play. True to the coming of age archetype, Hamlet experiences his father's death, falls in love, and is called to action, which causes Hamlet's transition into adulthood. But Hamlet resists this progression, and by prolonging his transition into adulthood actually speeds his own death. In the very beginning of the play, Hamlet's father mysteriously dies, beginning Hamlet's transformation from a carefree college student into an adult. Shakespeare doesn't describe t |

Some people contend that death sentence is cruel, inhumanity and inherently violates the Constitutional ban against cruel and unusual punishment. But in my opinion, capital punishment is appropriate. Death Sentence is like a terror weapon for offender, compensation for the victim. Murders and server criminals deserve capital punishment. There are many people who doubt that artificial intelligence would ever become a reality but achieving artificial intelligence seems to be the ultimate goal for big technology companies like Microsoft and Apple. There are many reasons behind this conflict. One of the main reasons is based on the definition of the term, "Artificial Intelligence" itself and the criteria required for a machine to be called "intelligent". Throughout history, people have developed various tests to measure the intelligence of machines. S |

Use of Color in The Great GatsbyIn F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby, the "roaring twenties" depicts the post-war generation of the newly rich and wannabes, whose extravagant lifestyles center around parties, wealth and affairs. Fitzgerald builds his cast around such facades while simultaneously revealing to his reader their true essence. Magical Realism in The Elephant VanishesThe sudden disappearance of the elephant shrouds the story with unresolved mystery. Based on the story, the elephant seems to have become a normal part of the town's life since its adoption a year ago that its disappearance created a commotion. The fact that this event made it to the lead of the newspaper's regional section with the headline "Elephant Missing in Tokyo SuburbCitizen's Fear Mount, Some Call for Probe" shows the town's distress over the disappearance of the elephant (Murakami 453). One may find the headline alone as implausible in the first place, asking how can an elephant vanish into thin air. But as the narrator continues recounts the events from its adoption up to its disappearance, one can see how he and the town's citizens are very concerned about the mystery of this issue. The struggle to make sense of this realistic tale of the elephant's disappearance gives one support for being a magical realist text. In the story, the narrator tells about the pecul |

What Made Me Who I AmFor the most part, I was raised in a very small, Cajun country town. In this town everyone knew my name and who my mom, dad, sisters and brothers were. Looking back, I cannot recall seeing or interacting with many African-Americans in school, in the grocery store, or anywhere around town. I can remember them being there, but it seemed like they stayed in their own part of town and not much mixing took place. While living in a small town can have its perks, it can limit the perspective of one's mind, leaving people to believe that hardly anything exists beyond the borders of that little town. When I was in the fourth grade, my dad moved us to Pennsylvania for six months for his job. The town we lived in was an Amish townso you can imagine the culture shock that I, along with the rest of my family, was in. Gender Issues in the WorkplaceImagine for a second the 1910's and the women who lived in that era. Women were not allowed to even cast their vote on a ballot, while men were looked down upon if they took care of the children or did household chores. Society has definitely came a long way in the past fifty years for gender equality, yet we still have a long way to go. Since 1980, there have been more female students enrolled in higher education institutions than men. However, once women enter the job market their gender inequality goes downhill. Although gender issues in the workplace cannot be solved overnight, it is important that we make them an issue of the past. Encouraging a healthier workplace that brings down the barriers that prevent it should be accomplished. For instance, in the U.S today, men make up only 42% of college students. According to census figures released in 2011, among the 25-29 year old age group, 36% of woman had a 4-year degree compared to men. In addition a woman only earns eighty cent |

Supertoys Last All Summer LongAs society develops and grows technologically, Man is faced with new questions about life and humanity. Brian Aldiss in, "Supertoys Last All Summer Long," presents these questions in a domestic and intimate setting in a futuristic society, surrounding the Swintons and their boy David. David's existence as an artificial child does not condone the wrongful and indifferent treatment of him by 'parents' Monica and Henry Swinton. Throughout the short story, it is revealed that David's purpose in the Swinton household is a diversion for the fact that the Swintons could not have children. The Swintons were incapable of having children due to population control. Monica and Henry desperately wanted a child though. This was made possible by Henry Swinton's job as a managing director of a company dealing with synthetic life forms. It is implied that Henry provided David for his wife Monica. Power in The OdysseyThroughout Homer's, "The Odyssey," there are many different types of power exhibited by different characters. It's normal for people to hold power over others, however, taking the time period this epic was written in, into consideration, and paying close attention to the power of the different characters, the reader would question why most of the women have some way of exerting power over others. Perhaps Homer was trying to be different and try to branch out and try different things as most poets/authors do and intentionally putting these women in positions of power, or maybe he didn't intend to make it seem as though the women had power at all. Of many important parts and characters in, "The Odyssey," one that almost all people continuously fail to notice and account for is the relation between Telemachus and Nausicaa. Although there aren't actually any physical relationships between the two characters presented in The Odyssey, the article, "Telemachus and Nausicaa: A Study of Y |

School's Website FiltersSchools all across the world have access to the internet. The internet has the ability to be a very resourceful tool for education development. It also has the capability to taint the learning process. Adding filters and limiting access to internet seemed ideal to keep students on task, but school systems have taken the filtering too far. Censoring websites is not the way to correct student's behavior. Doing so restricts the learning process and does not allow the student's to reach full learning capacity. Aztecs and Human SacrificeThe Aztec culture was a group of people that lived in Central Mexico from the 12th century to the 16th century. The Aztecs were mainly polytheistic, which means they worshipped multiple gods and goddesses. To please these gods and goddesses, they performed many rituals of sacrifice including animals, adults and even children. Many cultures within that timeframe took part in human sacrifice, but the Aztecs are renowned for their gifts to the gods and goddesses because the act was so gruesome and was an everyday occurrence. In, "The Mystery of Aztec Sacrifice," the author, Michel Graulich, stated, "'In the centuries before the Spanish conquest in the early 1500s, the Aztecs of Mexico ritually sacrificed at least 20,000 people a year. What was their intent? The usual explanations given by scholars are that the Aztecs wanted to propitiate their gods, to nourish them with the victims' hearts, or to revitalize these deities by symbolically killing them.' In the memoirs of the author's mother and of himself, they constantly face discrimination from their race in certain neighborhoods and of their religious beliefs. The trials and tribulations faced by these two characters have taught readers universally that everyone faces difficulties in life, but they can all be surmounted. For most of McBride's life, he was yearning for an identity to call his own. He was neither entirely black nor white; his mother told him to not associate with outsiders. He was at different times, a model student and a drop-out. In short, he did not have a group to call his own, outside of his immediate family. As a result, he began a search to understand himself and his own mother's life. After learning about Ruth's upbringing, he decides to visit her hometown of Suffolk in order to piece together her childhood. What gave McBride this sense of be |
