Heroic Patterns in Myths

For centuries heroes are seen as someone who's fought for the right thing, or to achieve their destinies. Their stories are all about their adventures and struggle in order to reach glory, not always getting the happy ending they deserve or want. In today's society, these heroes has gone from being all mighty and glorious legends to common men, without a tragic ending. The generations has changed the look of how heroes portrayed, from the way their stories are told, their beginnings, and how men and women's roles evolve. Famous mythological writer, Joseph Campbell, wrote the book The Hero of a Thousand Faces. He noted that each myth story is about everyone as a human being, the struggles they'd go through to find their place in the world. Each hero story portrays this meaning and is shown in multiple ways. (Thury 159) Common heroes does have their struggle but less drama than myth heroes. Common heroes does not only mean policemen and firefighters, they are anyone a person sees as a h

Principles of Compassion

Nikko, Olen, Nicole, Rodrigo English AP Compassionate Souls Barbara Ascher, in her essay, "On Compassion" she states that compassion is a something that humans must learn, not genetically obtained. I support the claim that all humans must learn to be compassionate, because I was not born with it, I was taught as I grew up, and I decide whether I apply it to my life. Personally my father, works for an organization that helps those in need. He creates opportunity for people to have a second chance. Throughout history, many people have showed compassion, one main figure being Gandhi. The love he showed for all of the people of India, and tolerating all their beliefs to fight for a greater good. His compassion has left a mark on Indian culture. Also in literature there are examples of com

Period Texts and Poetry Comparisons

Tennyson's 1856 poem, "The Charge of the Light Brigade" and Wilfred Owen's 1917 poem "Dulce Et Decorum Est" are salient examples of a text being a product of its time. These poems reflect the attitudes and values held in the society they were written. While Tennyson's poem focuses on a key battle of the 1850's Crimean War, Owen's poem presents a juxtaposing perspective on the reality of trench warfare during World War I (1914-1918). Tennyson sheds a positive light on war by celebrating and glorifying it. In stark contrast Owen exhibits an abhorrence of war, with both composers reflecting their personal experiences and the attitudes and concerns of the times in which these poems were composed. The text 'The Charge of the Light Brigade' by Tennyson celebrates the victory of a crucial battle in the Crimean War in 1856 between the British and the Russians. The scene depicts a horrific field of mass destruction imprisoned by cannons on every side being "the v

Characters in Hamlet

Claudius is presented as a multi-faced character. He desired the crown of king Denmark, and killed his brother King Hamlet to acquire it. Claudius seem to have a large, booming voice in the film. Branagh uses costumes to suggest the 19th century. Claudius is dressed with a nicely contemporary look. When we first see Claudius, he strikes us an intelligent and capable ruler. He gives a speech to make his court and country proud, addressing his brother's death. Claudius knows that a change in government could ignite civil unrest, and he is afraid of possible unlawful allegiances and rebellion. His speech compares the people's loss with the new beginning they will have under his care, and he uses the death of Hamlet's father to create a sense of national solidarity. In the beginning he does present the impression of being a good king. King Claudius, as seen in the film Hamlet, is both intelligent and well-spoken, two traits that, put together, complement his manipulative and dangerous na

Concepts of Corruption in Hamlet

In Shakespeare's Hamlet, the theme of corruption and decay is a recurring theme that is explored through the use of time and place. Shakespeare uses time and place in order to create a dystopian and corrupt Denmark, and further uses time and place as an instrument to gradually illuminate and uncover the corruptive morality of the personalities within Hamlet. The overarching use of the central setting of foul Denmark, alongside the careful sequence of plot and character development eventuates in the conveyance of a corruption that is as a result of the players with Denmark, and Denmark itself. Shakespeare uses the setting of dystopian Denmark to establish the basis of corruption in Hamlet as a result of the place and time – Denmark. In Act 1, Denmark is illustrated as an atmosphere of suspicion, this is seen in Act 1 Scene 2 as Francisco states that due to the metaphorical "bitter cold" nature of Denmark, he has become "sick at heart" leading to the representation of the state as an infectious root for corruption, further expounded as Marcellus illustrates with visual imagery "something is rotten in the state of Denmark.&qu

Intercultural Communication, stereotyping, perception, and verbal communication play a huge role in the characteristics of the movie "Crash." When Paul Haggis directed this film he did a fantastic job of showing how individuals from different cultures, and countries, sometimes interact with each other in society. It goes into great depth to link the problems and situations in the characters' lives in the setting of the movie making sure they are involved with each other in some way. Impact of Refrigeration

According to the author's inferences, there is a large social impact evident throughout the excerpt. The quote, "refrigeration brought distant production centers and the North American population together" is one of the few examples which exemplify the significance of this element of social impact. Another example that touches on the element of social impact is seen through the quote, "The household refrigerator changed the way people ate and socially affected the household". It is implied that the society experienced comfort with the development of refrigerators because people did not have to depend on external sources of ice delivery such as iceboxes for preserving their food and keeping it cool. The author expresses that refrigeration brought a great deal of comfort to the lives of both the rural and urban population. The element of discontinuity is brought in through the quotes, "ice wagons became a thing of the past" and "and they didn't have to

Symbolic analysis is actually when an organization or any entity is being changed by human being by use of their senses to draw conclusions thus come up with a certain image which represents the organizations (Bolman & Deal, 2013 p. 242). In Iggy's bread most successes that attained at first are attributed to the passion that Ivanovics had about their product, the way he valued their customers and respect he had towards their employees. In organizational symbol and culture normally has two things that are normally associated with them that is either failure or success (Bolman & Deal, 2013, p. 251). When McRae was hired by Iggy,s bread company as a consultant without any formal recruitment process a lot was expected out of him in terms of success but it evident that he failed completely by changing the administrative methods that were used by Ivanovics at first, was not being appreciated by employees and just recruited new people who were either family member of old friends. Character Study - Alex from XXY

Abstract This paper discusses the movie XXY and how its main character's, Alex, life can be examined via Sigmund Freud's Five Stages of Psychosexual Development. Alex is an intersex teenager who lives in Argentina and who was born with both female and male gene Talia. Although the viewer does not witness her childhood development, Alex is clearly in her teen years at the time during which the movie takes place. Her development in the movie directly parallels Sigmund Freud's last psychosexual development stage: the genital stage. Alex, who is referred to as a girl in this paper due to her parents considering to be such, establishes both independence from her family and experiences an romantic relationship with someone outside the family; these could both be considered criteria for Freud's last psychosexual stage. Additionally, Alex is also going through puberty and all the rigors that came with it.   XXY, which is a 2007 film directed by Lucia Penza, is the coming of age story of a t

Case Study on the Channel Tunnel

The Channel Tunnel, also widely known as the Chunnel, is a tunnel located underneath the English Channel at the Strait of Dover which links England and France since May 6th, 1994. This tunnel was selected as one of the Wonders of the world by the American Society of Civil Engineers in 1996 because of its unprecedented construction. In this case study, this Chunnel is analyzed based on system engineering life cycle model as shown in Figure 1 on how successive the Chunnel project was. Overview The idea of linking France and England was initially proposed by a French mining engineer Albert Mathieu in 1802 as to serve demands on transporting goods and people in which his design was illustrated as a tunnel propped up by wood beams and illuminated by candles so that horse drawn carriages could make the twenty mile trip between the nations as shown in Figure 2 which includes an artificial island halfway across for changing horses (Krystek, 2011). The Courage of Martin Luther King, Jr.

Courage against a mob is almost unattainable to rally; and fighting alone for a right is one of the most difficult positions there is. Regardless of the futility of that task, Martin Luther King, Jr. stood up for what he believed in. Although most people only knew him as the great man who helped end segregation of the African American community, they do not realize that he did not just fight for the black minority; he fought for all races suffering injustice. King was a civil rights reformer, who did not narrow his non-violent approach to the African American society; he was a hero who stood up for all minority groups such as the Arabic Americans, the Jewish, or any minority who had been treated unfairly by the oppressors. His non-violent advances, exceptional oratorical skills, and incredible courage have led the Arab-American community to step up and live their lives with daring bravery. On August 28, 1963, in Washington D.C, streets were bombarded with white police officers and po

Veneration without Understanding - Criticism of Rizal

Whenever we speak of Dr. Jose Rizal, we always think of our national hero as someone who believed in the power of pen rather of the sword. He fought for our country's freedom through his writings, unlike other heroes who literally raised their bolos and itaks just to have the independence we are experiencing right now. And since elementary school, we are taught to observe and celebrate Rizal's contribution to Philippines' Independence through commemorating his writings and death embedded in the school curriculum. In high school, Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo, the two powerful novel of Rizal were also discussed. Life and works of Jose Rizal were imposed on students in college. Truly, being a national hero is rewarding and poses as a figure for modeling nationalism and patriotism. People, especially the youth, are encourage to look up to Jose Rizal. Gender Segregation in the Work Place

When it comes to the Excerpts from The Gendered Society, writing by Michael Kimmel, he talks about how there are a bunch of variances when it comes to gender, for example how men and women are associated with certain jobs or responsibilities. With that being said, Kimmel is trying to say that this is the result of gender inequality not the sole cause of it. He questions the dramatic differences in the definitions of masculinity and femininity around the world. To support this statement he goes on to talk about how our jobs, families, schools, etc. are something he calls "Gendered Institutions." He says that these institutions show not just male and female differences but teach gender inequality by explaining how every single one of these examples introduces and supports male dominance. Plus, if you do not follow the rules of the blatant inequality presented up front you then you are seen as a deviant and then must be disciplined. Under the subtitle, The Variations in Gender Definitions, Kimmel states that "Mead was clear

Linux and Windows Device Support

Clients who think about rolling out as an improvement from Windows to Linux or Linux to Windows regularly need to know the points of interest and weaknesses of each of the working frameworks. In spite of the examinations made transparently on worldwide gatherings, one needs to set a criteria for settling on a decision. The general criteria for ordinary contemplations is as per the following: client experience (GUI, convenience, ...), accessibility of programming, accessibility of hardware, establishment and redesigning of working framework/ programming, security, and license/permit of use. Yet most importantly, we must look into that which gives the best gadget help. By gadget help we mean which stage has better capacity to handle directions at the same time and can give better yields. The issue of gadget backing on both stages is by all accounts a somewhat unstable issue. For each point that one side makes, the other side has a drawback. Both sides of the contention appear to have changed parts of gadget backin

Because of the time period taken place in the novel, Lily isn't used to her not being wanted because of her skin color. It's mostly Rosaleen and other colored people mistreated by the white people. She didn't think it could ever happen to her. She also understands that racism can work both ways from June. In chapter seven, Lily meets Zach, a negro teenage boy who works for August. He wants to become a Lawyer and changes how Lily sees the world when she tells him she

The Decline of the Catholic Church

During the Middle Ages, the Catholic Church was "the most powerful institution to be found anywhere in Europe." (Crompton 9) Prior to the Protestant Reformation, the Catholic Church affected almost every aspect of daily life and was once the highest power in all of Europe. The Catholic Church was able to collect money from local rulers and peasants to fund its projects, interfere with politics, and had a large influence over society. However, as a result of the Protestant Reformation, the Catholic Church lost power in areas where Protestantism was most dominant. The once all-powerful Catholic Church not only lost power within religion but was also deprived of its abundant wealth, control over European politics, and its influence over society was reduced. The Protestant Reformation, led by German monk Martin Luther, was a movement in sixteenth century Europe to reform the Catholic Church (which hereafter will be referred to as the Church) by expunging corruption and restrict
