Women in Hip-Hop

Like countless other industries, the hip-hop industry has an omnipresent male foothold that has been the precedent since its inception in the 1970s, and continues to be even today. The most visible element of hip-hop, the most commercially viable, is the art of rap, one enjoyed and performed by both men and women alike. However, the ratio of female to male emcees are greatly disproportionate--as mentioned, it is a male-dominated industry and culture. Although the number of female artists have increased since its inception, female artists still remain far behind their male counterparts. Additionally, the amount of sexual objectification and exploitation of women within the industry continues to increase, portraying women through a derogatory lens--much of this content produced majority by men. Women are not finding much success within this cultural revolution that has been prompted off of the idea of moving forward, instead women are being suppressed and restrained from doing so.. Hip

Reactive Attachment Disorder

In the article, Reactive Attachment Disorder: Recognition, Action, and Considerations for School Social Workers, Steven R. Shaw and Doris Pdez educate social workers on this relatively new disorder called Reactive Attachment Disorder (RAD). RAD is a complex psychiatric disorder that begins in infancy or very early childhood. The cause of RAD is psychological, resulting from not establishing attachment with a caregiver in early years. A child's attachment to primary caregivers is normally created during infancy and throughout the first very few years of life. Failure to form those attachments can result in attachment problems and trust issues, the most severe cases being RAD (Shaw, & Paez, 2007). Attachment may not be formed for numerous reasons; there is not just one simple cause. Some children may have experienced several caregivers or indifferent caregivers during the first year of life that attachments were never made. Many children with RAD may have been physically, emotionall

Punishment of the Death Penalty

Crime is a stigma on the fabric of society. It is not a new problem, as it was also prevalent in ancient times. To combat it, oftentimes, the government law officials and other law authorities impose some kind of laws and punishments. Punishment depends upon the level of crime: for petty crimes, criminals get short and soft punishments, whereas for heinous crimes they may get long time imprisonment or death. Death penalty is often a controversial issue. Some people think that it is the only way to deter the crime but the people who oppose death penalty think that it is against humanity and its retribution. Ralph Dellapiana, in his article "Should We Put Death Penalty on the Chopping Block" states that "the top five countries in executions in 2008 were China, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, and United States. On the other hand, 135 civilized countries in the world have abolished the death penalty" (25). There are also religious viewpoints for killing people like this.

Family, Dreams and Regrets

Everybody's been torn between family and their dreams before no matter who you are, whether it be a tragedy that strikes the family or just a twist of fate. Ron Rash's "Blackberries in June" is about a young couple that are madly in love with each other who are slowly attaining their dream of becoming successful and living a good life. But tragedy strikes and now their dreams are interrupted by their responsibility and loyalty to their family. The three main symbols that I have chosen from Ron Rash's "Blackberries in June" the lake, the house, Jamie's mother and Linda, her sister-in-law. The lake gives their spirits and bodies cleansing. It symbolizes their sanctuary and serenity away from the outside world, away from people who try to drag you and your dreams down with them. The lake confirms their love and strength for each other. It gives them peace of mind and brings them together as one as Ron Rash describes the moment as "The sway of water eased away the

My Red-Eye Flight

When I was 14 years old I received a letter from the PTPSAP asking me to travel to Australia with them for 6 months, and I was very happy. The PTPSAP is an organization that allows smart students to travel the world to different countries. We got to travel as student ambassadors and represent not only our home state but America as well. This organization allows students as young as 12 years old to travel and represent themselves in countries. I decided to take the opportunity and travel to Australia. In the beginning, I did not know any of the other students that were traveling with me. But by the end of the trip I knew every single 1 of them. Before we left for our long journey, we spent a lot of time in meetings discussing what we were going to do while we were gone. Additionally, we constructed projects that focused on the landmarks that we would be seeing. For 1 of my projects I built a model of the Sydney Harbor Bridge and the Opera House Learning about the variety of places to v

Concepts of Culture Shock

"Cultural pattern is a set of combined characteristics and traits that are related to a particular group of people." Each country has its own cultural patterns, but some countries may have corresponding cultural patterns too. People today move frequently searching for jobs or an educational degree. They encounter a lot of problems, conflicts, and misunderstandings with people having new values and beliefs. A foreign visitor to my country, Yemen, should be aware of new values, communication styles, and concept of time in order to adjust more easily and avoid intercultural conflicts and misunderstandings. First, foreign visitor should consider values as the most important part of the culture in my country. Yemen has its own different traditional values. For instance, a person coming from the United States will not find it easy to cope with people in my country. Many values survey explored how people change over time and their social and potential impacts. People in my country love to live in groups that are connected to each other most of the time. For example,

Code of Ethics for Radiologic Technologists

As radiologic technologists we interact with the general public on a daily basis. Radiologic technologists are given a set of rules that they must follow to help them provide the best quality care for their patients. These rules are called the ASRT code of ethics. It is extremely important that technologists are well acquainted with these rules to guarantee that the patient's quality of care is not compromised. The ASRT code of ethics can be broken down into 10 different sections. The first code states that when you are assisting patients you are expected to carry yourself in a professional manner at all times. This means that you should always be dressed in appropriate attire and use appropriate language when communicating with patients. Additionally, it is important to support and communicate with other radiologic technologists because it gives you an opportunity to collaborate ideas to come up with the best possible plan for your patient. Also it is important that you listen to yo

Immortality Through Creation

A man can achieve immortality by seeing achievement in his work. Author, Mary Shelley lived in an era where technology and the idea of science were beginning to rise. During the beginning of the 1800's, one sees this taking place through the invention of the steamboat. Another new invention was taking place as well. Electricity was becoming a worldwide phenomenon and Mary Shelley knew this was something amazing. Her biggest inspiration was Luigi Galvani, an Italian physician of the 18th century, who discovered in 1780, that the muscles of dead frogs' legs twitched when struck by a spark of electricity. This began the way for scientific research and scientific belief; one of the first steps into the study of bioelectricity, a field that, still today, studies the electrical patterns and signals of the nervous system. Mary Shelley was intrigued by the idea of electrical current being used to bring a dead creature back to life, so that one evening, while relaxing with her husband Percy Sh

Book Summary - In Cold Blood

Truman Capote accomplishes organic unity in In Cold Blood by focusing on one central theme throughout the novel: Christian ethics. The main story line of the Clutter family being brutally murdered is the central basis of where the theme of Christian ethics are created, maintained, and amplified through the story's parallels. These Christian ethics are the rights and the wrongs done according to what Jesus and God tell us to do, so the reader can positively use their Christian ethics. In the novel, words become images, symbols connect to the theme, and characters face ethical and unethical decisions. To effectively create, maintain, and amplify this theme of Christian ethics, the use of imagery, symbols, and characters create, maintain, and amplify the central theme throughout the book. Imagery is a literary tool used to help support and sustain the theme of Christian ethics by showing unjust Christian ethics. Imagery is used to both create an image in the reader's mind and also to mak

Literary Analysis - The End of Tradition

Since the beginning of Industrialization, between European and American countries/states, in the 19th century, a dramatic change from modernization reflected in society's methods, ideas, and lifestyles. For example, when the first American train was developed it eventually led to cars and buses. Also, women had a standard position at home, but now they are allowed to have any freedom reflected on their clothes, jobs, and identity overall. Having said, Americans began to focus so much on the modern world and neglect tradition. In the short story "A Rose for Emily" by William Faulkner, emphasizes on the evolution of industrialization using characters such as Emily to reflect on tradition. William Faulkner uses the symbol of death, society's view on modernization, and ignorance on tradition, highly developed throughout the last two centuries, that is changing humanity and its ideology forever. The word "death" can be best defined as, a permanent ending of something o

Biokinesiology - Normal and Disordered Movement

The first phase is the windup. The primary goal in the windup phase is to set a rhythm that correlates the timing of body parts and to prepare/build kinetic energy (1). The windup phase begins with the initiation of leg movement. At the beginning of the windup phase, the throwing hand and the glove hand are together and in proximity to the body's midline, anywhere from the waist to the head while taking a step back using the leg on the non-glove side. This leg is also used as the stride leg and the contrary leg is used as the support leg. When the weight is transferred, the body rotates 90 degrees while the stride leg tightens at the hip and knee so that the pelvis rotates towards the throwing arm (11). The body winds up so that all components of the body, from the leg to the arms, are able to contribute to the ball's driving force. Energy expenditure, force generated, and speed are a relatively at low levels. Even though the windup phase doesn't contribute to the balls driving force,

Should Women Wear Makeup?

Since the early Egyptian civilizations, makeup was always a "must" to seek the approval or to signify the power of the elite. Even though many people nowadays may not see wearing makeup the same as the past generations, the beliefs still prevail in some sort of level. In the 21st century, women are almost required to wear makeup to even be decently presentable, either to impress someone by covering up flaws, or just to satisfy one's self. Although many may argue that wearing makeup is solely a form of expression, society has a picture of perfection and anyone who does not look perfect is unacceptable. Women should not be imposed to wear makeup because it can be very costly, takes away worth from the idea of social equality, and there are actually many misconceptions that may even worsen flaws. For starters, buying makeup can be very costly, especially if the objective is getting quality makeup. In a makeup blog called "The Gloss", Rachel Segal wrote an article stating, "The report, Beau

History of Mount Rushmore

In the Black Hills of South Dakota stands the largest sculpture in the world carved into the side of a mountain. The faces of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln were the four courageous men that were considered for the carving. These men stood for the upbringing of our country, America. Mount Rushmore has served as a patriotic symbol that stands for America's freedom and history. These individuals have also set the standards for our country that have helped with the judicial system and setting morals for citizens to live by. The marvelous idea for this carving was inspired by Doane Robinson, who was Secretary of the South Dakota Historical Society (Presnall 15). Robinson proposed the idea to Senator Peter Norbeck. Both of these men strived for an attraction to put South Dakota on the map, they believed this monument would be the answer. Before any further thoughts of such a project they proposed this idea to the citizens of South Dakota. Many

Mystery of the Bermuda Triangle

The Bermuda Triangle is a triangular location in the Atlantic Ocean formed by three points at Puerto Rico, Bermuda, and Florida, this triangle is surrounded in mystery from planes and ships disappearing to them being placed in a time warp, it is shrouded in a paranormal cloud that may already be scientifically explained. While many people are skeptical of the Bermuda triangle many who have had experiences say things such as "It has become a permanent part of my memory, since I have been memorizing it for over 30 years." (Bermuda-triangle) Many times the experiences that have plenty of logical explanations come across as paranormal to the victim since during the event they cannot form a clear thought about what had just occurred to them. Many top scientist and dive exploration teams have gone out into the Bermuda Triangle also known as the Devils Triangle to do a scientific test and take samples which have helped them explain many of the mysteries surrounding the triangle. Araby and A Hunger Artist

After reading "A Hunger Artist," by Franz Kafka and "Araby," by James Joyce, I felt a strong connection between the two. The stories themselves are very different, however the literary elements are quite similar. Personally, character, symbol and plot structure stood out the most to me. The authors of these two stories use character and symbol among many others, to illustrate the common themes of "A Hunger Artist" and "Araby." The first element that stood out the most prominently to me was character. In "A Hunger Artist," the main character is a man who starves himself as part of an act all because he wants people to pay attention and love him. In "Araby" the main character is a boy who is obsessed with a girl who he hardly knows, and when he gets a chance at possibly being with her things don't work out and he is heart-broken. Both of these stories have an unhappy ending and they constantly revolve around heartache and disap

A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L'Engle

It's common for people to believe that a hero is someone who is perfect- a character without faults and who always has the right answers. However, I do not believe this is true. I believe a hero can have many faults, and can even learn to use those faults to his or her advantage. This may seem like a strange belief to most people, but after reading the novel A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L'Engle, it's become clear to me that this is true. At the beginning of the novel, we first meet our protagonist and future heroine, Meg Murry. Meg is a very unlikely hero. This is because she's impatient, headstrong, lacks self-confidence, and is overall very immature. Meg's impatience is shown many times throughout the story, especially when she demands answers and explanations to things. This also shows that Meg is headstrong, because she refuses to accept that certain things cannot be explained. For example, during a conversation with her mom, Meg asks her mother question after question, trying

Reaction to George Orwell's 1984

In George Orwell's American Classic called "1984" explains how the perfect utopian society would come out to be. It also explores how government corruptions and power comes to play a huge role in George Orwell's dystopia society. As of government corruptions in the novel 1984, the government altered anything they could to prevent the timeline from opposing their totalitarian ideology. Winston Smith did not believe in altering the past timeline in order to satisfy "The Big Brother." In the United States, we aren't like some 3rd world countries that follow a totalitarian lifestyle. George Orwell's dystonic novel 1984, made me feel like the United States is not as free as you think it is. For an example, freedom of speech is not absolute and it allows everyone to think twice about what they do/say, when they say it or do it and where they say/do it. Language isn't freely accessible at any location because of specific precautions. For instance, you would not be able to scream fire in a movie theater, scream "Hi, Jack&q

Excellence in Sports and Academic Competition

Everything in life isn't constant, it isn't stagnant, and it keeps on moving on from here to there, thus, in other words, life changes throughout the years. As we look back to our past life, we will surely see through the alterations from the past up to the present, and with those differences, there are ongoing changes. As though life changes, we can't deny the fact that we, humans, also change in various ways like we aren't getting any younger instead, we're getting older and with these changes, we are trying to seek for numerous ways to rejuvenate ourselves and our lifestyles also. Most of us don't want to look at ourselves getting older, do we? We need to face the reality and do some ways in coping with it. Excellence is right through us, it's just that we keep on ignoring it; we keep on forgetting it, leaving it behind our backs not knowing its great essence. When we have it, it's just like also that we're having the capacity to work things both in mind and heart, doing things independently makes us powerful in a sense that we could rule over our entire selves and most importantly, it makes ourselves braver than we thought, standing on our own st

Educational Changes I Would Make

Have you ever wondered why you take those general education classes? Why are they required? They bring down your GPA if you do not pass them, and the subjects are not related to your major. Imagine a college or university system that offers classes that are only based on majors, no more general education classes that are not relate. Students have the same amount of general education class as they do core major classes, and they take just as long to complete. General ed classes should not be required and are a waste of time. In order to change these circumstances, we can change the way public school approaches education, not require general ed courses after high school, and base colleges on major core classes. First, public school systems should take education more serious, there have been many incidents that I have seen a teacher not make an effort to motivate students into really applying themselves. This may be because of the public school teacher salary, by increasing their income

Inheritance Pattern of White Eye Color in Drosophila

Abstract Drosophila melanogaster was being tested to see how their eye color traits were being passed down through generations. Specifically, the red eyed trait, also known as the wild type, and the white-eyed trait, also known as the mutant trait. These traits can be passed as either autosomal or sex-linked traits. Sex-linked traits can be passed on the X or Y chromosome, but more commonly on the X chromosome rather than the Y chromosome. Two different crosses were performed in two separate tubes. One cross with wild type females and white-eyed males and the other cross was just a reciprocal of the phenotypes. Each cross was facilitated to produce an F1 generation and an F2 generation, and the results were there after collected. These results gave significant evidence that the trait that codes for white eyes in drosophila are passed on to offspring on the X chromosome. The results also suggested that the trait was an X-linked recessive trait. Introduction Drosophila melanogaster is

Genetic Screening as Public Policy

Introduction Genetic testing is vast of medical test which can identify changes in genes, chromosomes and proteins which helps determine an individual chance of getting a genetic disorder. There are many tests available to determine many common genetic diseases. Some methods of genetic testing are molecular genetic tests and biochemical genetic tests. Molecular genetic tests can determine a disorder by discovering single genes or short lengths of DNA to see the mutations or variation of that gene. Biochemical genetic tests look at the amount of movement from a protein and discovers the changes to the DNA for the result of the genetic disorder. Moreover, genetic tests are regulated by several agencies within the federal government such as the Center of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The FDA regulates the test kits that are a part of genetic testing. According to Genetic Alliance, the FDA oversees "the devices accuracy clinical sen

Unconventional Writing in Slaughterhouse-Five

Kurt Vonnegut tells the story of Billy Pilgrim in Slaughterhouse-Five; His uncontrollable time traveling takes Billy back to his experiences in World War II and on the planet which is called Traflamadore. Throughout this novel Vonnegut blatantly disobeys the conventional rules of storytelling. He does this after trying multiple times to write a straight-forward book on the bombing of Dresden. After realizing he does not want it to be a regular war book, Vonnegut tries a different strategy of writing. He boldly inserts more than one surrogate, ignores chronology and disregards sticking to one perspective of narration. This is because he does not know how to write about such a dark topic any other way. He wants to tell the world what really happened, but the only way he can make sense of this terrible event in his life is by inserting these eccentric elements. Due to Billy Pilgrim's uncontrollable time-traveling, chronology is almost nonexistent. A reader can first experience Billy's t
