Literary Takes on Frankenstein

The term "Frankenstein" has undergone sequences of alterations, and an elongated lifetime than its carrier, Victor Frankenstein. The memoir of the title can likewise be perceived as more intensely appealing than that of the expert scientist. Frankenstein written by Mary Shelley, has certainly originated an elongated way since 1818, even though Shelley's inventive drive has remained cooperated for the sake of showbiz and income. Through numerous assumptions during the course of the twentieth century, Frankenstein has developed and is looked upon as a tool for entertaining motivations, rather than the envisioned moral and technical example, it remained first inscribed to teach. I strongly believe this due to the fact that the time eras are altering, as well as humanity's arrogances towards the convinced subjects and how it comprises many morals elevated within the novel. A lot of the previous movie revisions of Shelley's Frankenstein, seized the unconventional facets of the manuscript

Ancient Greek Tragedies

In the stories "Oedipus Rex" and "Antigone", many actions turn out to have peripeteia outcomes. "Oedipus Rex", by John Bennett and Moira Kerr, is a story about a young man named "Oedipus", son of the Corinth, who attempts to escape his fate of killing his father. In "Antigone", by E.F. Watling, Antigone, the daughter of Oedipus, wants to give her traitorous brother, Polynices, a proper burial. But, her uncle "King Creon" is against helping the traitor and decides to punish Antigone with a death sentence. Through their actions, Oedipus and Creon experience peripeteia by avoiding their fate, becoming king, and making the wrong choices, which made them suffer tremendously. It is evident that Oedipus' actions created the most unexpected form of peripeteia because his fate was sealed by the will of God, which is inevitable even when you try to escape it. For Creon, he had the chance to change his future, since he was warned of the

Women, Sexism and Classical Islam

Leila Ahmed corroborated that autonomy and participation of women were curtailed with the establishment of Islam and steadily declined in the Islamic period. However, Homa Hoodfar alluded that Muslim women could employ veiling, a symbol of oppression, for their empowerment. How do you understand the seemingly opposing arguments of these two Muslim feminists? Or do you find common ground in their discourse about the status of women in Islam? In your opinion, how their approaches are significant for the Muslim women to challenge oppressive structures and practices? Leila Ahmed's main argument as demonstrated in "women and gender in Islam" surrounds the topics about status of women in Islam and the rise of the oppressive society that leaves women with nearly no rights to live by. She argues over the issue of male dominancy and their oppressive practices that are due to the commonness of the patriarchal interpretations of the religion. Leila achieves to compare the changing time

Aristotle and Views of God

Eric Marshall Professor Feldman PHL 115 1 July 2015 What are the moral implications of the existence or non-existence of God or an afterlife? In this paper I will argue that Aquinas's view that since God is proved to be the beginning, and the creator of the first being, then there has to be an afterlife as well. My first argument comes from the text " Now everything that is produced through the will of an agent is directed to an end by that agent, because the good and the end are the proper object of the will; and therefore whatever proceeds from a will must needs be directed to an end" (Saint Aquinas pg 78). From that passage I got that If God is the creator of all beings and he is perfect in every way, then all that has a beginning has an end since God is perfect and good. The apparent connection between morality and religion appears to many people to support the claim that moral truths require a religious foundation, or can best be explained by God's existence, or

Infection Control in Healthcare

Abstract Every day more and more people are exposed to, contract and even die due to the infections in the hospitals or other health care facilities. In this essay, you will learn about the history of how infection control was implemented and the importance of infection control. I will tell you about the discoveries that were made by scientists and a nurse that changed healthcare. I will explain to you, how providing health care to patients has changed and the devices used in today's healthcare. You will learn how, although these devices were a great improvement in providing care; they have also become a major source for infections. I will also tell you the shocking number of hospital associated infections and the number of patients' death that have been caused by these infections. Infection Control in Health Care For many years infection control has been a large of the publics' concern. Many people fear going to the hospital for proper treatments, because they are afraid of what

Charisma in the 1952 Political Campaign

Being able to inspire interest, enthusiasm or affection in others is a gift believed to be divinely conferred on people thus charisma has a religious meaning. This meaning was however turned political by Max Weber who portrayed it as an act of having self-confidence and complete self-devoutness in qualities of personal leadership like boldness and disclosure (Davies, 1954). He distinguishes charisma from leadership on the basis of tradition and through this he defines a charismatic leader as a leader who is well equipped with extraordinary powers to solve political problems. Charisma is a relationship between a leader and his followers and the relationship is gained through the ability of the leader to influence the followers through appeal and dedication. The relationship does however not depend just on the leader but also on the followers. A charismatic follower is more concerned with the political figure as opposed to the politi

Alexander Delarge in A Clockwork Orange

In Stanley Kubrick's film adaptation of Anthony Burgess's best known work, A Clockwork Orange, the perception of the protagonist was drastically altered. While the last two chapters are a key of the story in the novel, Kubrick omitted them for his adaptation and hereby suggested a different focus in what concerns the morality or final impression of the plot. While the book ends with Alex's transformation from a sadistic crook to an adult man seeking for a woman to start a family, the film adaptation ends right before readers of the book would be lead into said change of heart. This omission of key information divides the character of Alex into two separate ones. Viewers of Kubrick's film get to know that Alex has come to a full recovery of his disputable treatment and might get back to his life as rapist, thug and robber. They receive no guidance in getting an idea of what happens next, but they know Alex. Keeping the last tests by the psychologist at the hospital in mind; he might ver

Barley's Ethnography Research in Cameroon

The Innocent Anthropologist is a written account of Nigel Barley's experience of doing fieldwork among the Dowayo in rural Cameroon in the early 1980s.  The strength of the book is that it includes the personal problems that emerge with the frustrations, boredom, tribulations, and misinterpretations that inevitably emerge in the context of "doing ethnography" as well as a true test of cultural relativism through out his journey. Barley's methodology is mainly clouded by his inexperience. Fieldwork is made up of fact gathering data and turning it into ethnography. It is often seen as though it will make a great contribution to human knowledge. This is not the case in Barley's experience, as what he encounters in the tribulations while he studies in the field the language, culture, rituals, and beliefs – more or less leads to self discovery more than content for contribution. Most anthropologists decide their location with out yet even knowing what their thesis will be

Children and Counseling Intervention

1.0 CLIENT CENTERED THEORY AND SKILLS IN CONDUCTING A SESSION From my point of view, guidance and counseling is a concept of helping individuals discover and develop their psychological, educational, and vocational potentialities, to achieve an optimal level of personal happiness and social usefulness. It is essentially democratic in that each individual has the right to shape his own destiny. I have chosen Shaidi Nur Hisham bin Shaidi as my client for my guidance session task. Shaidi Nur Hisham bin Shaidi is from 5 UPM, and his father and mother had divorced when he was still a small child. Frankly speaking, I was his English teacher and often saw him fall asleep during my class. So I decided to ask every subject teachers that teach him and they said he did the same thing during their class. I do some research about his family background by seeking information with his classroom teacher. On 8th March 2015, 11.00 a.m. I had conducted a guidance session with him until 11.30 a.m. I had

An Overview of Indian Classical Music

Indian Classical Music is probably the most ancient form of world music and it dates back to Vedic Age. The time of this age is debatable but most of the historians commonly agree that it started from 2000 BCE. Hindus believe that the creation was started with a indistinct sound which later manifests itself as a two note sound,OM( It originates from the tonal frequency and eventually rises upto the perfect fourth.) and then everything happened from that divine sound. This itself proves how old the connection of music was with the Vedic civilisation. Vedic literature was preserved in a verbal form for many years. Therefore Vedas are known as "Sruti". The similar trend has also permeated into the musical culture and that's why it doesn't have any staff notation for many years until the great scholar Vishnu Narayan Bhatkhande introduced his notation system in early twentieth century. The whole learning process of Indian Classical Music depends on a great teacher-student relationship where a student stays at his guru's house for

Ethical Dilemmas in the Penal System

The purpose of the United States correctional system is to protect citizens from criminals, rehabilitate inmates, and remove their rights as free citizens to pay their debt to society. Unfortunately, prisoners are doing time but are not appropriately punished for crimes. Prisoners are not paying their debt to society because they have nothing to offer society while imprisoned. Yet while locked up, the prisoners are steady sucking the taxpayers of thousands of dollars just to incarcerate and provide them every basic necessity. Longer incarceration for non-violent inmates caused unprecedented social and economic problems in California. Newer sentencing guidelines caused expenses to skyrocket that led to an overview of the laws. Offenders are given harsher sentences for non-violent crimes and consequently overcrowding has beleaguered the prison system, specifically California. Subsequently, in 2010, the United States prison population increased by 790% in the federal prison population alo

Moving Your Feet Forward - Slaughterhouse Five

Nelson Mandela once said, "Part of being optimistic is keeping one's head pointed toward the sun, one's feet moving forward. There were many dark moments when my faith in humanity was sorely tested, but I would not and could not give myself up to despair. That way lays defeat and death" (Nelson Mandela). In this quote we learn to keep moving forward in life no matter what. We are going to face hard times in life, but we have to accept that and move forward without looking back and regretting the past. Slaughterhouse Five gives us three views of moving forward: the Tralfamadorian's, Kurt Vonnegut's and poor Billy's view who is stuck in the middle. As we are comparing these views what we are really diving into is the views of the non-human versus human view or the Tralfamadorians versus Kurt Vonnegut. When looking at Billy, we see he is in the middle. He has moments of strength where his views are those of an alien, and he also has breakdowns where he shows his human nature.

My Life - Moving from Place to Place

Moving around was a common thing for my family back when we were younger. It happened so many times I lost count. The reason was always either something we the kids did or because of my father, most of the time my dad was the reason. He was always up to something, usually no good. It was just him and us for a while before our mother was able to finally come over here from the Dominican Republic. I remember how much I missed her and wished she would hurry up and get over here already. Even though my mom wasn't here, it's not like my dad was exactly raising us alone. I don't even want to remember how many "step moms" we had as kids, it was probably more than how many times we moved. "Raising four kids alone is too hard for just one person" he used to say. They weren't all bad, some were actually pretty nice. One I can remember was the step mom we had when we lived on spring field St. in south Lawrence. Her name was Yolanda, she was nice and pretty too if I remember ri

The Importance of the Theologian Tertullian

Introduction In the period of documenting Christian scriptures and teachings, Tertullian works and theologies have a visible impact. He entered into Christianity before 197 and rendered his services for illustrating and defending the orthodox principles of the Christian faith. His works can be classified into the categories of apologetic, ethical and polemical, in which he has tried to clear the misconception and confusion of people, due to the amalgamation of Greek and Christian concepts. Tertullian's conversion to Montanism has also a significant importance in forming Christian's doctrines as then his worked was influenced by the concepts of spirits, and attaining the esoteric objective behind religious traditions and practices (Barnes). Tertullian considered that Heretics were altering the religious teachings and scriptures to fulfill their personal desires, which is leading people towards corruption and confusion about religion and its core believes. He has mentioned it in his t

Energy Drinks and Class Identity

Choosing a cold, on the go beverage has never been as hard as it is now with so much variety and the range of drinks in the chiller at supermarkets and corner shops; a bulk of these drinks are 'new world' Energy Drinks. The appeal for energy drinks over regular carbonated drinks or coffee is that they contain caffeine, which is a stimulant, and they also have a very high sugar content which makes them very sweet, as opposed to coffee which is bitter, so after consumption individual's can get a 'buzz' and gives them more energy and keep them alert for them to get along with their daily activities. A person will most likely first consume an energy drink when they are in their teenage years- between 15 and 17; they start consuming them because their friends are having them. People are either regular consumers of them and consume them a few times a week or they have them occasionally, only when they need this energy they supposedly give. Significant Person Essay - Moses Maimonides

Moses Maimonides was a famous philosopher and physician who was heavily influenced by many varieties of sciences, mathematics and classical philosophy, mainly the works of Aristotle. These influences allowed him, not only to provide rational but meaningful Jewish texts and teachings that have been impacting the Jewish community for years, but to provide contributions that paved the way for Judaism to cultivate into the modern, meaningful and relevant religion that it is today. Maimonides was a Sephardic Jew born in Cordoba, Spain in 1136. He was well educated in Jewish religion, secularist sciences and philosophy, most of which were taught to him by his father who was also very well educated. In 1148, Maimonides and his family were forced to flee Cordoba due to the increasing threat of invasion of the Almohades. Eventually Maimonides and his family settled in Fostat, Egypt where they were able to practice their religion freely. Shortly after their arrival in Fostat, Maimonides' father

Mary Wollstonecraft - Working for Women

Wollstonecraft wrote a book titled "A Vindication of the Rights of Woman" it focuses on how women should be declared, the same rights as men to an education, as well as other civil opportunities. Wollstonecraft was born in London 1759. Mary's father Edward John Wollstonecraft bullied and mistreated her mother. This helped her to write the books she wrote to help women, simple because she grew up in a home watching her mother being treated unfair by her father. A Vindication of the Rights of Woman begins with a dedication to Talleyrand asking him to reconsider his view about women and girls education. Women are not prepared by education just to be a companion for men, but they can be so much more, if they are allowed a chance by society. I believe if women and men are educated equally they can

Business Strategies for Callaway Golf

In this paper, appropriate value discipline, generic and grand strategies will be discussed for Callaway Golf. Historical data will be examined and used as support throughout this paper. An overview of value discipline as described by Michael Treacy and Fred Wiersema will be given. Michael Porter's views on generic and grand strategies are discussed and applied appropriately to Callaway Golf and its current business strategies. Value Discipline All three value disciplines as described by Michael Treacy and Fred Wiersema greatly benefit Callaway golf in a variety of ways. Operational excellence and the convenience and product reliability it provides its customers is important to Callaway. However Callaway is not attempting to lead the industry in price and convenience, thus placing operational excellence as a value discipline behind customer intimacy (Pearce II & Robinson, Jr., 2013). Product leadership and Customer Intimacy by definition fit the Callaway brand. Callaway is continuousl

The Failing Prison System

In Wilber Rideau's "Why Prisons Don't Work" he argues that prisons have little to no effect on crime because "it is a response after the fact, a mop-up operation." He explains that prison does not deter criminals, but instead causes them to leave or stay the same way they came in, which is uneducated and unskilled. Rideau also argues that prisoners tend to stay the same with their criminal lifestyle, because being behind bars is their life or a large portion of it. Furthermore, he claims that young men are mostly the ones committing these harsh crimes, and after fifteen to thirty years in prison, are seen as little to no risk to society. He adds that penologists have studied murder and say it is "almost always a once-in-a-lifetime act." Also, Rideau points out that prisons focus more on giving criminals long, extensive amounts of time rather than taking more action into rehabilitating them, which he believes can be the solution to the prison system. Two Approaches to Parenting

In an ideal world, a child is well mannered, with good behavior, and always listens to instructions. The idea seems highly impossible at times because let's face it; raising a child is an extremely tough job. Parents take different approaches or styles in raising their children no matter what age, or gender the child is. Some parents pursue an authoritative, stricter, and create a tyrannical approach to raise their children. While others are less strict with an easy flowing trusting approach. In conclusion, a parent who is less strict on their children is a better parental approach than being an authoritative strict parent. To begin with, the first reason I believe a parent who is less strict with a child gains trust and more respect when raising a child. A household with a less strict parent on their children is more trust worthy. They are seen more as a friend rather than an authority figure. A parent who is strict is seen as an enemy and the child be

Corrupt Government in Animal Farm

"All animals are equal but some are more equal than others"(Orwell 134), is the theme of George Orwell's 'Animal Farm'. They went from overturning one powerful human leader to gaining a harsher animal leader who is respected and honored because of his species. The lives of the animals on the farm take a wild turn after the successful rebellion against the humans Throughout the novel Orwell uses ideas and characters to demonstrate that propaganda, hypocrisy, and pride can trigger totalitarian control in a community. Throughout Animal Farm propaganda was used by the pigs to gain support and control over the farm and the animals. Old Major uses multiple types of propaganda to persuade the animals to think about the possibility of rebelling against the farmers. He influences the animals to believe that all animals are friends and all humans are enemies by using difficult arguments that the other animals couldn't comprehend, so they had to agree. Once the pigs gain control

Men, Women and Gender

The subject matter of men and women is timeless. From Adam and Eve, in Genesis 2:4-3:24 to John Gray's Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Venus published in 1992, men and women have lived in this perpetual state of battle. Since we live in a world that for a very long time up until recently, had only been observing of only two particular sexes; the male sex and female sex, there has forever been an ageless conflict and as one of my classmates so bluntly put it, "Men and women are eternal partners." Thus, meaning, we are everlastingly interconnected, we are spiritually intwined to each other and without man no woman, and without woman no man. Gender on the other hand doesn't relate to the biological and physiological characteristics that define men and women. Gender describes the socially constructed roles, behaviors and activities given to each sex by our societal counterparts according to the World Health Organizations website. (www.who.int) In the following paragraphs I wi

Sex Without Love by Sharon Olds

In the poem "Sex without Love" by Sharon Olds, the speaker is confused about how people can engage in the act of intercourse without love. Casual sex was something that was just being introduced during this time of free love and sexual liberation during the 1960s. Olds compares the purist, to athletes who train their entire life to obtain that personal record or perfect orgasm. The "pros" were more interested in experiencing passion and euphoria through sex then the connection of love. Boundaries and rules shouldn't limit the experience of having that infinite moment with another person, even if love isn't involved. People who can have intimate physical relations without the ugly and burdensome weight of cultural or religious dependence, is a truly independent hero, an athlete, one who can face the toughest tests of endurance with grace and beauty even though this will ultimately leave the person alone in the universe because they can never be satisfied without love. Olds uses the first couple stanzas to describe professionals of their crafts relating them to people who love to have sex: "Beautiful as dancers, glidin

The Effects of Volcano Eruptions

One of the greatest and most immediate dangers presented by eruptions of volcanoes is lava. The temperature of lava ranges from 600 to 1200 degrees centigrade, a high temperature moving stream of melted rock, that is emitted during an eruption. Moving from the crater downhill at a significant speed, covering and burning down everything on its way. The speed at which the lava moves depends on its composition, how viscous it is, and how steep the slope is, the speed and amount at which it erupts. Its speed can reach thirty kilometers per hour, however a more common speed is around one kilometer per hour. Such speed gives people sufficient time to escape the flow. The flow can reach dozens of kilometers from the crater. The dangers of lava being erupted by under-ice volcanoes have to do with creation of lahars – flows of mud, which are far-reaching and destructive, it can cause the increase of the water-levels, consequently creating floods. If lava flows across water, it causes the
