The Failures of John F. Kennedy's Foreign Policy

John F. Kennedy was not a president known for his strong foreign policy. John F. Kennedy's foreign policy was consisted of many failures with only a few successes. His failures in foreign policy were so great that they triumphed over his successes in foreign policy. Just because Kennedy's foreign policy was not as strong as he wished, does not mean that he was a bad president, but when it comes to John F. Kennedy's foreign policy, he needed a lot of work and improvement. When John F. Kennedy came into to office, he got right to business. James Diegueno, the author of the book Destiny Betrayed, believed that President John F. Kennedy's "unorthodox" style concerning foreign policy was adopted even before John. F. Kennedy came to office (Diegueno). In a way, this "unorthodox" style concerning the foreign policy, was not a style that the American people were used to. Not only was it a style that the American people were not used to, but the "unorthodox" foreig

Slavery in Latin America

The black experience in the Caribbean led to many issues that blacks are facing today in our society. The most common issue is racism and slavery in the Caribbean is the reason for it. Of those who survived the voyage to the New World, one-third landed in Brazil (60-70%) or the sugar colonies of the Caribbean (Mitnz: Digital History). It is estimated that 10 to 16 million African slaves survived the voyage. Surprisingly, only six percent of them arrived in what is now the United States. However by 1860, roughly two-thirds of all New World slaves lived in the American South. Slaves in the Caribbean faced many difficulties such as the horrible treatment by slave owners, hard labor, and poor living conditions. They also were the victim of discrimination and were treated in inhumane ways. Discrimination has been part of our society since the human existence. Since the initial periods of human existence, groups divided each other and developed prejudices toward others. As a result, t

Advertising in the 1920's

After the horrors of the first World War, the 1920s proved to be a time of great optimism and prosperity. The 'roaring 20s' was a decade of unprecedented affluence which enable the advertising industry to successfully generate more freedom for consumers, in the pursuit of happiness. The demand for thousands of consumer goods was inspired by advances in technology and cultural changes. Leiss, Kline, Jhally and Botterill state that "this was advertising's golden age, not merely because advertisers had grasped its almost unlimited transformational capabilities, but because society as a whole almost completely agreed with its key premise, that the road to happiness was paved with more goods and services". The claim is supported by the way advertising of the 1920s served as an engine for shaping the opinions of consumers and influencing the buying patterns of the public. The industrial expansion of the 1880s enabled mass production during the 20s, lowering costs in manufac

Common Core Education System

Does America honestly believe that segregation is gone? It is not. Discrimination and prejudice continue to occur in our society and they cause segregation. In the United States, the history of segregation in education for people of color is being repeated, but this time with students from backgrounds of poverty. Segregation is occurring as a result of implementing a common core. Common core is an education system in which academic standards are national. "The standards are aligned with college and work expectations and internationally benchmarked." (Education Digest, pg17). Nearly every state has adopted Common Core. However, many are having second thoughts due to the change in political leadership or a response to a pushback in its origins. (Education Digest, pg.17). If the United States implements common core, then people of lower class will not receive an equal education. Overtime Common Core, began to experience opposition. The opposition comes from Tea Party and libe

Juliet - A Dramatically Compelling Character

A person who is dramatically compelling is one who will make you believe in what he or she does and will make you feel for the character, even though he or she is just a work of fiction. At the start of the play, we are shown a Juliet who is innocent, delicate, vulnerable and submissive, seen evidently in the first scene which she is introduced: It is an honour that I dream not of. And stint thou too, I pray thee, Nurse, say I Ill look to like if looking liking move, But no more deep will I end art mine eye than your consent gives strength to make it fly (1.3.68-101) This scene occurs when Lady Capulet and the Nurse are discussing Juliet's marriage. All we are shown of Juliet is her agreeing meekly to their requests, without a voice or opinion on her own. In a sense, she contrasts with the other characters at the beginning of the play as she plays the role of the young child who is sheltered and relies heavily on her elders. However, later on in the play, she matures due to the si

Managing Multinational Organizations

Introduction Managers of multinational organisations need to be able to manage businesses internationally. One needs to possess knowledge and skills beyond those of usual business expertise to be in a position to manage at the international level. For instance, managers in multinational firms are required to understand the various regulations in the countries in which the organisation operates. They also need to understand the values and customs, as well as the laws in the various societies in different countries. The ability to execute transactions in various nations is also essential. Communication is of high importance in international management. It can emphatically be mentioned that communication varies from one society to another one and from one nation to another (Bilgin & Wührer 2013). Communication is a factor that can contribute to the success of a business organisation or the failure of the business. Therefore, an international manager should be able to understand the vari

Underage Drinking and Alcohol Abuse

Stuart, Florida was a calm town, until a fatal accident changed a family's life forever. Stephen Bromstrup, a sixteen-year-old boy, killed two teenage girls after he had been drinking at a party. Stephen ran through the stop sign where the two-lane road he had been on intersected the main highway; Stephen escaped from the accident with only a broken jaw, but the accident left his two childhood friends dead (Murphy 1). The National Institute of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism states each year, approximately 5,000 young people under the age of 21 die as a result of underage drinking. This includes about 1,900 deaths from motor vehicle crashes, 1,600 as a result of homicides, 300 from suicide, as well as hundreds from other injuries such as falls, burns, and drowning. However, drinking remains popular among teenagers. According to data from the 2005 Monitoring the Future study, three-fourths of 12th graders, more than two-thirds of 10th graders, and about two in every five 8th graders have c

Truth for All Time by John Calvin

John Calvin was born in early sixteenth century France to an affluent family. He was originally Catholic, but sometime around the spring of 1534, he experienced the conversion to Protestantism. His beliefs stressed God's sovereignty over all of Creation and the importance of man's duty to conform to it. Some would consider John Calvin to be Calvinism's perfect embodiment, as he is its namesake and the ideal he would strive to make the world become. (Kagan 282) Calvin's belief that men and women should live their life as their Christian beliefs calls them to. His firm holding to the Protestant way of life caused him to be expelled from where he previously worked and lived, in France, to flee from his accusers and those who disagreed with him. Calvin's determination to hold to his Calvinist beliefs despite his difficult and often treacherous life shows him to be a man that not only believes that God has a Plan for each and every one of his Children, but that it is the child's duty to fol

The Body and Stress

Stress is the body's reaction to difficult and challenging positions and circumstances. Helye Selye once said, "It is not stress that kills us; it is our reaction to it." This means when stressed, the body produces certain chemicals for a "fight-or-flight" response.I agree with Selye. This is because stress can effect our bodies in so many ways. Its not the stress that harms us but it is the strain that stress puts on the body. If a person is stressed frequently and over a long period of time, this can be harmful to the person. Richard Lazarus believes, how a person perceives and evaluates an event makes a difference in the level of stress this person feels. Lazarus took the cognitive approach of how people evaluate stress. The cognitive model of stress states that people will analyze and evaluate a situation before it is labeled as stressful. When a person must choose between two or more options that tend to result in opposing motives. This le

Poetry Analysis - Tourist and Boat People

The mistreatment of the Haitian people by white-Americans is a central theme in Felix Morriseau-Leroy's Tourist and Boat People. Both poems discuss how one's status in society is determined by race, color, culture and nationality. They show how people are judged and put in a negative light because of due to who they are. People have to deal with struggles due to insecurities of their culture and people degrading them for where they are from. Haitians, and many other nationalities and cultures are degraded for who they are and where they are from. They are belittled by people in better social situations in society and feel ashamed of themselves. Also, the use of terms that are offensive or untrue can damage people. Overall, Morriseau-Leroy touches base on the mistreatment of Haitians in Haiti and in the United States. Morriseau-Leroy was known for popularizing the Creole language in his literature. He wrote both poems in a first person point of view, which is only right since he is Haitian himself. The first poem Tourist is written as the thoughts of a Haitian man speaking to a white tourist. In Tourist he writes, "Don't take my picture,

Looking Backward: 2000-1887 by Edward Bellamy

The book Looking Backward by Edward Bellamy is a book about the ideas of the 19th century and how much the opinion of the 19th century American was different form the 21st century American. The Author is writing in the 19th century to a 19th century audience. He has very different ideas from others in is time period, and is viewed as very radical by the general population. The book starts out by taking place in 1887. The main character Julian West is an average 19th century citizen. It is a point in time where there is a small population of the world that has all of the wealth, and he Julian is part of that population. Others in his social class feel that they are superior to the rest of the world and deserve to be treated as so. He is married to Edith Bartlett who comes from an aristocrat family out of Boston. They were going to get married as soon as the house they were building was complete. It had been delayed a lot because of all the strikes going on at the time. They were very co

Mythologies of Death

Death has a universal presence in this world and as such, a universally present motif in all mythologies. The way death is presented in mythology, even across vastly dissimilar culture, are curiously similar. In reality, there is often little people can do about death other than grieve or be happy. But in myths across cultures, humans often have the ability to challenge death, to follow in its footsteps and retrieve their dead loved ones. Nevertheless, even in mythology and the fantasies of man, such task is nigh on impossible. The presence of an afterlife is pervasive in myths, nevertheless, those who move on to the afterlife cannot be brought back again to demonstrate the natural order of life. It is well known that myths attempt to explain the unknown, and humans, who exist from birth, cannot imagine the cessation of existence that is death. As such, there is always an afterlife where the dead go to continue living after deaths in mythology. In the Babylonian myths, it is the Under

The Greek Debt Crisis

Since early 2010, the Eurozone has been facing a major debt crisis. Greece as a Eurozone nation from the mid-1990's have been persistently spending more than its total accrued tax revenues. Because of this deficit, the country borrowed to contain and control its shortfalls and invariably its debt burden continued to rise. Underlying the Crisis As recently as 1990, the Greek state controlled about 75% of all business assets in the country and tightly regulated other sectors of the economy. The state reduced its stake to about 50% by 2008. However, according to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), much of the private sector continues to "suffer from weighty and complex regulations and from the lack of a coherent and systematic approach to rule-making." In the decade before the crisis, a significant portion of rising government expenditures was allocated to rising public sector wages and benefits. As recently as 2009, Greek government expenditures a

The man was late 40s, a heavy-set, balding man with stooped shoulders, as if he carried a great weight there. He wore brown slacks, brown shoes, a light brown shirt, a tie, and a

Narrative Essay - Iraq, 2005

The days seemed to be the longest days of my life. We were doing the same thing day in and day out, so it got very monotonous. Waking up and providing security for different units to go different places in the country got very old until the one day that changed my life completely. We started the morning with our normal safety briefing before we left the camp for the day. Everything was going well on the route that we had been on a dozen times before. Everything was going so well that maybe we did get a little lazy watching what was going on around us. When we went around the corner the u half of the convoy made it by the trash can without a problem; it was the second half of the convoy that went bad. It seemed to me that everything sort of started to go in slow motion, just like in a movie. Just then there was a massive explosion, forcing the truck ahead to a complete stop. The smell of burning oil, rubber and flesh could have made anyone sick. The blast made such a concussion that i

Comparing Malcolm X and MLK Jr.

When you think of America, what comes to mind? America, land of the free and home of brave, where equality is shared by all and opportunities for success are ample. It's 2015, and a black man sits proudly in the oval office, commanding the most powerful nation in the world. We've come quite a long way as a country since just a few decades ago. Just mere 50 years priors, people of color were regarded as second-class citizens. They didn't have equal rights or any of the opportunities that white folks did. The thought of one day having a black president would seem laughable. Blacks were oppressed and treated with distain, in order for the white man to keep his position a top his ivory tower. But out of the midst of all of this oppression and cruelty, black voices began to rise. New influential black figures started to take a stand for what was right. Men like Martin Lu

Marketing in the Music Industry

When you scroll through the music library on your phone, do you ever think about how much money those artists make? How many other people do you think have that same artist's music on their phone? Everybody knows that the "Billboards" artists are making millions of dollars a year and don't have to worry much about retirement, but what about the other guys?  Even if an artist's music isn't on millions of phones, they still deserve to make money because most artists have trouble garnering more than a small fan base. Money distribution in the music industry, however, is very controversial and doesn't occur how most people expect. It seems that all over the world, money issues take center stage; from defense spending to taxes, and there are always disagreements regarding its distribution. The truth is, when all else doesn't fail, the effective distribution of money does. For instance, the current average salary in the United States is about $50,000 per year, which many

Sleep is the Best Medication

William Blake once said, "Think in the morning. Act in the noon. Eat in the evening. Sleep in the night." In modern society influenced by early school schedules, most teenagers fail at fully adhering to Blake's last sentence: sleep in the night. Students' lack of sleep carries trying risks that can affect their well being and quality of life. As sleep deprivation serves as a leading catalyst threatening the health, safety, and academic performance of teens across the country, pushing for a later starting time provides for a logical solution to fix these troubling factors. The average high school student does not receive the highly recommended 8 ½ hours to 9 ½ hours of sleep per night that teens need for proper development and growth. Rising early in the morning interrupts sleep that is crucial for maintaining the natural sleep-cycle engineered into teenagers' biological makeup. We are more inclined to sleep later in the day as it is our bodies' natural tendency, and this l

The True M.V.P. in The Merchant of Venice

The Merchant of Venice, written by William Shakespeare in the 1590's, is known as a tragicomedy. Shakespeare creates a character named Shylock, a Jew, who is both the protagonist and antagonist and who turns out to be one, if not, the most important character in the drama. Shakespeare makes Shylock a Jew so he can prove a point about how Jews were regularly prejudiced against in the late 15th century. Also, Shylock is a unique character because he transforms himself throughout the play. He exhibits points of weakness and sorrow, yet deceives the reader as a cruel, heartless, monster when in reality, he is a tragic hero. Shylock is a victim who is constantly tormented by others. He is regarded as lower class by the other characters in the play. Shylock is Jewish, unlike everyone else, so it is easier for the townspeople to bully him because he is considered an outcast. He loses his daughter and money to a Christian named Lorenzo. Also, Shylock loses his lands, his possessions, and ha

The Gambling Addiction

Gambling is a dangerous addiction that can lead to financial ruin, and in order to avoid this trap people should have a designated friend who can keep their spending in check, especially when patronizing casinos. Each of those machines you sit in front of are the money cocaine of gambling, as soon as you begin for others it's a difficulty to quit. Sure, the poker machines may look completely innocent but they can be as cunning and mischievous as a robber. The victory chime and the glowing lights introducer bystanders just see gambling as a fun game. The image of casinos were formed by the Las Vegas movies that portrayed gambling as a win-all or lose-all past time. The adrenaline rush of winning and feeling even luckier after your first win and risking it all again only to get luckier. I for one love gambling so much, I have lost around $2,000 through approximately $3,000 since December of 2014. On April 18, 2015 my family and I went to Mohegan Sun to see Kevin Hart live. The Process of Conflict

Conflict is the process by which people perceive that others have taken some action. During this process we have learned that most people have a misconception about conflict. Levy states that conflict is a normal part of a team's life, yet most people have this idea that conflict is bad and it interferes with the team dynamic. The perception is it should be avoided yet we understand that team members misunderstanding one another causes conflict. This Conflict can also be bad for a team because it can create team members to have strong emotions and it can even add on stress due to matter of the conflict and the break in harmony. In order to resolve the conflict you have to interfere with the cohesion of communication; meaning you need to have hard and awkward conversations. During this course we learn that conflict is good and in a team dynamic conflict is the sing of a healthy team. Imagine a team that had no conflict, what that would say about this team? (Levy (126) suggest that

Sonny's Blues and The Yellow Wallpaper

The short stories "The Yellow Wallpaper" and "Sonny's Blues" are different in many respects. One is written by a white woman in the 19th century, the other by an African-American man in the 20th century. One deals with a depressed writer, the other with an emotionally fragile musician. However, the stories' similarities are greater than their differences. In each story, the protagonist is an artistic soul, and each struggles to fit into the "normal" world. Both Sonny and the wife in "The Yellow Wallpaper" also face deep emotional and mental problems that have affected their relationships as well as their ability to create their art. Each character faces oppression, one as a woman in the 19th century and the other as a black man in the early 20th century. In addition, each has a close family member who tries to control their artistic expression and therefore control their loved one. In "The Yellow Wallpaper," the narrator has been broug

The Rise of Business in Phoenix, Arizona

Being one of America's fastest growing cities, Phoenix, Arizona is careful about the way it presents itself to businesses and other financial entities. In Fortune Magazine's December 2014 issue, the City of Phoenix placed an advertisement that emphasized its strong economy and educated population. "The nation's most populous capital is emerging stronger than ever," read the headline. "[Our city has] a well educated workforce, a special quality of life, and an economy built on innovation." Throughout the 9-page advertisement, growth, quality of life, and education seem to be the focus. While these themes are some of the ones described in Short and Kim's piece on city representation, the City of Phoenix goes deeper by providing the business reader with evidence of the city's progressive nature. The advertisement's initial paragraph begins with a brief history of Arizona's "gold years". This is done to immediately set a low standard and to allow the reader t
