Political Figures in The Prince

Machiavelli's The Prince has been around for over five hundred years, and has influenced many great, and many terrible leaders, but the political leader I believe embodied Machiavelli's principles is the thirty-seventh president of the United States, Richard Nixon. Nixon's following of Machiavelli's principles of sabotage, deception, and cover-ups can be seen throughout Nixon's presidency and even before, while trying to get more votes, to the infamous Watergate Scandal. "Any man who tries to be good all the time is bound to come to ruin among the great number who are not good. Hence a prince who wants to keep his authority must learn how not to be good, and use that knowledge, or refrain from using it, as necessity requires." In accords to this Machiavellian principle, Donald Segretti was tasked by Nixon to stage "dirty tricks" against potential Democratic nominees, which included mail

The Distance Between Life and Death

Elisabeth Kubler-Ross once said, "It is not the end of the physical body that should worry us. Rather, our concern must be to live while we're alive - to release our inner selves from the spiritual death that comes with living behind a facade designed to conform to external definitions of who and what we are." "What does it mean?" I looked into mother's eyes with my most innocent face, suddenly, her eyes narrowed with sadness. She closed her mouth tight then turned around and looked into the sun, that at any moment was to disappear into the night. "Death?" she murmured, then turned back momentarily and forced a smile that I didn't comprehend. She didn't say another word, just thoughtfully grabbed my little hand while we continued walking. I didn't ask another question, enjoying the warmth her coarse big hand around mine. Unnoticed, the incident began to grow in my heart. What is death? Why mother had such an expression of what I haven't seen before? Slowly, as I grow up, as the seed grows, my sense and my experience become the manure and water urging it to develop. Finally, in the presence of today, I begin to understand the meaning of death and

A Modernistic Critique of Steadfast Hope

America was birthed, and still thrives, on a sense of hope for a better future. This hope is the basis for most of America's development and advancement. Even our current president's general election campaign slogan was simply "hope". American's have this concept of steadfast hope ingrained in them as a society. However, modernistic ideals contradict commonplace traditional American values as in this steadfast hope. In fact, through the experiences of characters in The Death of a Salesman, A Streetcar Named Desire, and The Great Gatsby, a steadfast hope ultimately results in an inevitable death. In the first piece, The Death of a Salesman, there is a ubiquitous representation of hope and the resulting success, or rather lack thereof. Willy Loman has several hopes, but they all stem from his single personal mantra: "Be well liked"(Cite this). He believes that the key to success in life is to follow the aforementioned mantra. The main goal of Willy is to prove hi

Poor Tom and Chaos in King Lear

In Shakespeare's King Lear, Poor Tom-a figure of madness, poverty, and linguistic play-acts as the personification of the semi-apocalyptic state into which the social world of the play descends. Edgar first appears fully as Poor Tom in Act 3, in the midst of the storm, when Lear's madness becomes fully displayed. That we encounter Poor Tom in the setting of the storm-addled heath associates him with the tempest, but in fact this association is suggested by the text from the very first introduction of the Poor Tom persona. In Act 1, scene 2, Edmund responds to Edgar's entrance with the following: "Pat he comes, like the catastrophe of the old comedy. My cue is villainous melancholy, with a sigh like Tom o'Bedlam. –O, these eclipses do portend these divisions. Fa, sol, la, mi." (134-137) Edmund's introduction of the Tom o'Bedlam character is preceded by his disparagement of astrological superstitions, which he then performs for Edmund as if in the voice of Tom o'Bedlam. Thus these

A Rose for Emily and The Cask of Amontillado

We all say from time to time, "I could kill that person" when we are severely angered, but the actual act is something many could never have the heart to do. On the other hand, people actually do express the desire to see someone dead. Although every murder is different, some can even cause you to feel pity, or sympathy. In "A Rose for Emily" and "The Cask of Amontillado" both authors try to draw out sympathy from their audience for their main characters. Although Emily and Montresor are both equally murderous main characters, Emily is more of a sympathetic character. Many different things can drive someone to commit the crime of murder. It can be pure hatred, jealousy, or love. In William Faulkner's "A Rose for Emily," Emily Grierson is the main character responsible for the murder of her lover, Homer Barron. "What was left of him rotted beneath what was left of the nightshirt, and upon him and upon the pillow beside him lay that even coati

Nunez, on finding himself amongst the community, fails to understand how they live. However, as he continues living among the people, he gets to understand their ways of lives and even marries one of them. The following discourse is a literary analysis of the discourse in reference to disability and how people wrongly perceive it. Blindness is a form of disability. By definition, disability refers to being physically incapacitated to an extent where one lacks the normal five senses. In the story, blindness is the form of disability that the members of the isolated community in Ecuador face. The stor

Aristotle and the Greek Miracle

The origin of modern science was founded upon by key moments in time in which philosophical thinkers begin to construct foundational roots to the science we know today. It began with a society not like any other, in which an atmosphere of new and innovative ideas could flourish. In which questions of matter, motion, and change begin to be explored; while unlocking the questions of certainty and true knowledge. Ending with the discussion of Aristotle and his System in which ultimately becomes a widely accepted science and the apex of Greek natural philosophy. Science can be said to be the result of ancient Greek philosophers who paved the way for exploring and understanding the natural world. But these conditions would not at all be possible without giving credit to ancient Greek society. The nature of Greek society provided the perfect nourishment for new and groundbreaking ideas that no other civilization had delved into for religious and social reasons. The majority of other cultures

Nevertheless leaving the world of Feluda and entering Tintin's does not really alter the feeling of anticipation since Tintin almost does something similar in the story "Land of the Black Gold". Dying Well: Growth at the End of Life

In Dying Well, Byock approaches death as not a problem to be solved but something to be looked at outside the regular scope of medicine as it is taught in medical school. The author believes that end of life care should focus on the alleviating the pain and discomfort of dying. The terminally ill patient/loved one should be made as comfortable as possible. He also does not believe in unnecessarily prolonging the person's life to make those that are grieving that person feel better. (Byock, 1997) That just prolongs the patient's suffering and essentially can bankrupt them. Hospice allows the person to die at home or in a home environment, surrounded by family and friends. It gives a sense of security and safety to the dying. Hospice is beneficial to both the ill person and their loved ones. Both parties benefit from the family providing care with the correct guidance. This allows them both to grieve the death and feel the emotional pain together. It gives a sense of purpose and mean

The Church and the Crusades

The Crusades The Crusades had a profound effect on the way the Church is viewed. They represent a time in the Church where zealous believers were taken to cause through warfare as a sign of their faith and belief in God. The Crusades represented, for some, the ideal actions of authentic Christians, but, for others, the fanatic and misguided beliefs of overzealous believers. The intent and religious implications of the Crusades has been a topic that has divided many. On one side, you have those that believed the Crusades pleased God and through them they would be benefit spiritually; yet on the other, you have those that saw the Crusades as a malicious attach and atrocity by Christians. The Crusades undoubtedly benefited the cause of the Church, yet the negative consequences as well as specific Crusades will be surveyed throughout the work. Jerusalem had been captured by the Muslims Turks in 1076 which made it difficult for Christians to journey to, worship in and live within the city.

Cosmetic Surgery - Beauty or Beast?

Society has always valued beauty. In literature, attractiveness often indicates the admirable protagonist, while ugliness symbolizes an abominable antagonist. From a young age we are taught, without even realizing it, to prize beauty. As a result, in today's modern world everyone feels pressure to meet society's beauty standards. To do this many go to extremes -plastic surgery - which is unethical and poses many risks. Firstly, plastic surgery is a work in progress and there are physical dangers associated with it. Financially, cosmetic surgery is a poor choice of investment. Although people often claim that plastic surgery has psychological benefits, there are large risks associated with dissatisfaction and potential mental health issues. Finally, cosmetic surgery has a negative impact on society as whole and gives beauty a new meaning. This is why people should not be able to have plastic surgeries for cosmetic reasons, only for reconstructive ones. The foremost reason for not getti

John Lennon, Music and Christianity

When thinking about media that reflects faith, one normally would not think of John Lennon, or his music, as an example of this. John Lennon was the legendary founder of the best selling band band to date, The Beatles. After his days with The Beatles, Lennon continued to make music and perhaps his most well known song "Imagine" has evoked emotions of humanity including Christians. John Lennon was born on October 9, 1940, during WWII. Over his lifetime Lennon gained international recognition first as a musician but also as a humanitarian. Born and raised a Liverpool boy, Lennon started his first band at the age of 17, a band that would later become The Beatles. Alongside friends Paul McCartney and George Harrison, these young men would become international stars. Both religiously and politically, Lennon was a figure of controversy from his early days in the working class environments to his assassination in 1980 in New York City. A statement that caused a lot of scrutiny, Lennon's claim to be bigger than Jesus was certainly blown

America and the Legalization of Marijuana

The word drug is a medical term that describes any substance that affects the functioning of living creatures. By this definition, many substances that are common in American households would be considered drugs such as coffee that contains caffeine, alcohol, nicotine (dominant in cigarettes) and even turkey (tryptophan). Plants and herbs have been used for medicinal purposes for millennia by the world's physicians to treat, cure, and prevent disease but most of these "natural" drugs have been replaced with synthetic pharmaceutical drugs, which are usually more effective and more profitable than herbs. The drug marijuana is a plant and consuming it causes a number of effects on the user, though the total set of effects varies from person to person. A commonly reported unpleasant side effect of marijuana is anxiety and panic. One reason marijuana causes anxiety is that it can increase the user's heart rate by 20 to 50 percent within about ten minutes of smoking it and about half an hour of eating it. This elevated heart rate in combination w

Introduction to Old Testament Studies

Archaeology, in the past, has largely been formulated to prove that the Old Testament is historically factual. Unfortunately this has caused significant problems that have impacted modern archaeology. Biblical scholars sought to prove that the Bible was historically correct in order to qualify it's authenticity spiritually. They failed to address the problems of genre within the Bible. Today, archaeology is more about collecting evidence, making assumptions and in developing theories about the society of the Old Testament time. Whether it offers credible information to the validity of Old Testament history remains debatable. In fact, Dever (1992) maintains that the Old Testament cannot be proved historically correct and only some of the books of the Bible can be used to show any pertinent historical information. He does question the damage that has been perpetrated by Biblical archaeology. However, archaeology has made many relevant contributions in the past, and future developments ma

The Sociology of Abortion

Not everyone believes in abortion due to their religious beliefs. Some people believe in abortion just for one reason and that is if someone was raped. The bible was written 3,500 years ago and people believe every word that is in the bible. This is the reason why people fight against whether abortion should be illegal or legal. Abortion should be legal in the United States. In life you can't always chose what happens to you and being raped is one of them. Abortion should be legal because a woman should not have to carry a baby in her if it is not what she wants and not by her consent. Making abortion legal will help a lot of woman because they won't have to get an abortion illegally. Being raped is something that you don't want to remember, you want to try to forget about it any way possible and having to carry a baby for 9 months will not help anyone forget about the rape. People have their own opinions about abortion and some say that no matter what abortion is not a choice but ever

Is There a Superhero in All of Us?

In "Is There a Superhero in all of Us?" Peter and Gabriella Hancock, they make the case that we all have potential to achieve more than we can. Are they correct? How does Batman fit this idea? "Is There a Superhero in all of Us?" One would normally answer this question by saying "yes there is a Superhero in all of us, it is the everyday good deeds we make every day that make use a Superhero", or some other variation of that. By no means is this untrue, but Peter and Gabriella Hancock take a bit more in depth look at achieving more than we can as Superheroes than as mere humans we can achieve. They are correct in their saying that Superheroes have a different way of seeing the world, that if one does not have superpowers then technology is the next logical step to gain all the "powers" of a Superhero. The first and most basic way Superheroes differentiate themselves from humanity is the difference in their perceptions of the world. If a Superher

My Career Goal - Web Designer

When I was in high school, I remember the first time I learned what a blog was. I remember spending more time with how the blog should look than actually making posts or talking to people. But it wasn't until recently that I became very interested in the web designs. With time the more I learned about computers, the more curious I became on how websites were designed. My goal now is to become a Web designer. Web designers must code programs to properly format and add content pages for websites. Using the following skills; remain up to the task with technology, creativity, communication, and concentration. I will complete my goal. I am currently in my first semester of web design but I still have a long way to go. A web designer has remained up to the task with technological advances because new tools are being developed very frequently. Nowadays, since the web is being accessed by a number of wireless devices such as the cell phone and Bluetooth enabled computers, the web designer has to work more towards optimization of the web pages. Via social media and news sites, books and magazines I have found out man

Basic Beliefs of Buddhism

The basic Buddhism beliefs come from the teachings of the Buddha. The Buddha laid the foundations of Buddhism once he, himself became enlightened. The foundations of Buddhism lay with the Four Noble Truths, The Eightfold Path, nirvana, karma and reincarnation. The goal in Buddhism, as a "religion" is to live a moral life and reach spiritual liberation, or spiritual bliss. Many argue that Buddhism is not a religion, because in Buddhism, there is no central god or deity that created life. They argue that Buddhism is a way of life, a way to better one self morally and spiritually, while being compassionate and caring to those around you. The Buddha journeyed for many years until he became enlightened. Upon enlightenment, his compassion compelled him to teach others how to obtain spiritual liberations. He taught the Four Noble Truths, which leads to the Eightfold Path, the instructions on how to live the Four Noble Truths. The Buddha also spoke of cycle of reincarnation and how

Financial Systems of the NCAA

Since 1906 the NCAA has claimed to "protect young people from the dangerous and exploitive athletic practices of the time." It was according to an NCAA survey that the average football player spends almost 50 hours a week on athletics with the average overall time spent in any sport being 35. These athletes are putting in more time than most full time jobs and generate billions of dollars a year, yet they are only compensated by tuition reimbursement, a virtually free fee from the universities. These athletes are abused for their time and health from a massively profitable industry. College athletes need to be paid to play these sports that directly generates revenue. Music Research Paper - Für Elise

Abstract/Introduction When one thinks of legendary artists, it would come as no surprise that the names of Beethoven and Michael Jackson would arise in conversation. On one hand you have the "King of Pop", who is most widely known for his contributions to contemporary music and dance all over the world. While on the other, you have a master composer and pianist; a musical prodigy from a young age. Both were geniuses in their own right. In this paper we will make an analysis of two individual pieces respective to both men and the impact they had upon society on a more universal level. First will be Jackson's Thriller, the seventh and final single hit from his sixth studio album. Then we will move on to Beethoven's Für Elise, otherwise known as, "For Elise". It is perhaps one of his most well known compositions for its iconic introduction. Thriller, by genre, is classified as a disco-funk song. It is set in the key of C# and its instrumentation c
