The American Higher Education SystemUniversities and colleges have lost their basic mission of offering the best services to students. The once huge and vital sector has turned out to be a sector that charges huge fees yet students graduate with low grades that are way below average. The young generation deserve better than the undernourished and above all the overprice diet they are fed with. The higher education system needs a reform, a reform that individuals will view their obligations to the upcoming generation. The sole purpose of higher education institutions is offering education; other activities offered should be justified why they exist on campuses. For instance, activities that impede learning and teaching in campuses include administrative officer like the varsity athletics chairman. This papers aims to look how the higher education system has completely lost its major aim of offering quality education to the young generation. It also gives insights of what needs to be done so as the education system can onc |

Globalization has brought change throughout the years and, it has developed new business, tools, and the way people think and do things. Ethnography and RitualsA ritual can be understood as the meeting point of myth and a reflective thought or even a religious living. It is the border between time and eternity; the known and the unknown. Many people believe that rituals are necessary because they enable them to comprehend and to realize the ultimate foundation and origin of life, to communicate with the powers that preside over the destinies of the universe to which one belongs. This essay will draw on the ethnographies of Nelson (2013) and Graeber (1997) and discuss the links between ritual practices and the wider historical contexts that they engage. Rituals are usually taken to be ancient and traditional and associated objects or performances are thus also thought to be traditional and ancient. In his writings, Roy Rappaport (1979:175) defines ritual as 'the performance of more or less invariant sequences of formal acts and utterances not encoded by the performers'. That is, these formal acts and utterances are learned from the teac |

Response Paper - The Dali MuseumOn Saturday, June 8, 2013, I visited the Dali Museum in downtown St. Petersburg for the very first time. I was eager to see the numerous paintings and sculptures Dali had created. The three pieces of art work that stood out to me were, Daddy Longlegs of The Evening, The Hallucinogenic Toreador, and The Lobster Telephone. These works stood out to me because art should function as a means of expression between life's realities and what ones dreams or imagines. Daddy Longlegs of The Evening was an oil canvas painting by Dali from 1940. In the painting there is a horse being shot out of a canon, a woman melting into a violin, the daddy longlegs is on the blouse of the melting woman, and a boy is sitting with his back toward the viewer of the art. The painting grabbed my attention with all the different characters in it tha |

Minimum Wage and the Wealth GapEvery morning my father wakes up and goes to work construction. Doing something like this used to be enough but due to factors like the increasing gap in wealth this is no longer the case. Blue collar jobs like construction no longer provide enough to make a comfortable living. This is a direct result in the gap between the rich and poor. In a democracy run government it is crazy to think that the rich have all the power. In the words of the great philosopher Aristotle "In a democracy the poor will have more power than the rich, because there are more of them, and the will of the majority is supreme". Aristotle is stating that the majority have the power in a democracy. In order to fix the problem the lower class must use its power of being the majority and support higher taxes on the wealthy, a higher minimum wage and an increase in education opportunities for the poor as ways to narrow the wealth gap. The gap on wealth has been going on for a very long time. One of the ma |

It's My Day Off and ErmoDuring the past 60 years, China made a huge revolution. Some noticeable changes were also depicted in Chinese films produced within this time. The focus of work change in Chinese Communist Party smoothly transforms the theme of films from socialism to capitalism, from community to individual, from altruism to egoism. To acquire better understanding of these improvements, drawing a comparison between the film It's My Day Off in 1950s and Ermo in 1990s is a good start. This examination will facilitate the process because both films focus on how individual roles have progressed in different developing stages in China. Competition between different groups and parties is one of the highlights in the two films. If one steps back and views It's My Day Off politically and globally, the competition reveals itself. China was starting to catch up with some developing country during the first few five-year plans. As a result, Tianmin Ma's story shows Chinese strong enthusiasm and ambition of com |

The Basalt Statue of CleopatraLike every ancient piece of art, the basalt statue of Cleopatra was uniquely crafted to the specifications of its cultural origin and era. It was crafted around 51-30 B.C. (The British Museum) as a representation of the last Pharaoh of Egypt, one of the most influential ancient characters in modern times. A lot is yet to be learned about the statue, and one persistent path for analysis is in uncovering its significance. To this effect, historic and archaeological deductions have helped shed some light. Perhaps, more knowledge on the model character will help reveal some of the mysteries of the abstract elements surrounding the art. The sculpture stands approximately forty-one inches high. Basalt, originally named as basaltes in Latin (Merriam-Webster), is a hard black igneous rock rich in both magnesium and iron. It makes up majority of the oceanic crust today and is formed just as tectonic plates pull apart. (Galleries). Compared to alternative crafting materials of that time (such a |

Tibetan Buddhists - Pilgrimage and LoveThe ways in which Tibetan Buddhists practice their religion have always been intriguing to me. Many people choose Potala Palace as their pilgrimage destination because it is said to be the closest place to the Paradise. Most of them go on their journeys on foot and crawl on their hands and knees for the entire way. They lie down and touch the ground with their foreheads in every five or ten steps, in order to measure the length of their journeys and feel the power of the earth. This is one practice by which they show their devotion to the Buddha. They also believe it is the way to wash away their sins in previous lives by torturing their bodies. Many have spent most proportion of their time to do such religious practices. Due to the extreme weather in Tibet, lack of oxygen, cold, rain and storm, it is easy to die on half way of the pilgrimage. The question that confuses me the most whenever I saw and heard such austere practices is why so many people are willing to risk their lives for |

American Government - Political Party PreferencesIn the significant number of issues that face America today, along with the previous issues that have been discussed before, the Democrat party has delivered many points that has closely reflected the way I wanted to personally see the government control our country. Both Democratic and Republican parties have an immense influence over America's political spectrum, however they both differ greatly in their philosophies and belief systems. In my research I have concluded that the candidates/people of the Democratic party are more inclined to want the government to have an active role and to get more involved with society. Through this they believe that the government getting involved in society makes the possibility of the quality of people's lives gradually increase. They are referred to as being liberal because their belief system is based off of favoring maximum individual liberty in political and social reform. I feel as though the Democrats have given their approach rationally and s |

The Socioeconomic Views of GandhiIn the 21st century continuous modernization and development are seen as critical to world progress, India's recently elected Prime Mister Narendra Modi stated that his governments vision for India focused on development1. However the father of the Indian nation Mahatma Gandhi's views on modernity and especially modern civilization, are extremely intriguing. Although many world leaders today view growth and modernization as imperative to the advancement of the human race, some view it as harmful to cultural and spiritual awareness and a step towards a materialistic lifestyle and world. Gandhi, as stated in Anthony J. Parel's book, 'Hind Swaraj' and Other Writings, was one of the people that believed the latter. Gandhi voiced his apprehension towards the modern civilization in Hind Swaraj's fifth edition published in 1922. He said, "This booklet is a severe condemnation of 'modern civilization"2. His views on this topic have been a matter of debate since the days |

The Vietnam War and The Things They CarriedThis story is a very dark and deep one. The goes inside the mind of the Vietnam solider and the burdens these men had to face, or carry as the author put it. The story goes through the physical things these men were forced to carry, weapons, food etc. But I think the central theme is the things we carry that we can't dispose of. And I think the author keeps that theme simple, as in the way he describes it, so for those of us that have never faced that adversity can really grasp the mental conflict these men were forced to handle. In the story it talks about things that they no longer needed, they just dropped on the trail and walked away. And all the characters struggled with the fact that they could not just drop the mental baggage they carry, as much as they may want to. They find throughout their humping through the countryside, that since they cannot drop what burdens them in their minds, they mask is and put on a face that revels nothing of their personal internal struggle. William Cullen Bryant and American RomanticismWilliam Cullen Bryant was considered as a major voice of American Romanticism who would greatly influence the Transcendental Movement. Bryant composed his perspectives to fulfill his duties as expressing elements of American Romanticism and Transcendentalism. American "Romanticism is crucial to American culture to the extent that the very creation of the United States has been considered an expression of romantic thought" (Matterson1). Bryant incorporated another element otherwise known as Transcendentalism which expresses an idea that a higher power, men, and nature are all linked to and in order to get to the higher power one must surround oneself with nature. Bryant used these elements throughout his works of poetry. Although some authors possessed both elements, Bryant views appear to be different from other authors during this era. Bryant unlike others was not able to fulfill his passion for the path of a writer. "Bryan |

Functions of a Healthy LifestyleToday I will be talking about health and fitness. According to the center of disease control and prevention, CDC. 90,500,000 people in United States will be obese in 2017- 2018. That is 90.5 million of family, friends, and coworkers that come to heart diseases and wide variety of people will be getting diabetes. You know why I care so much. As a member of national guard, I have an obligation to stay fit and healthy. Not because I have a physical test to pass. Because I have to be faster and stronger to against my enemy. Unfortunately, staying fit and healthy in the winter also impossible to people. We forget to incorporate proper diets, exercise, and enough sleep into the busy schedule. We are so consumed with works and captivated with the taste of fast food like burgers and French fries or food that contains high level of fats. With that's being said, let's me first discuss how to incorporate proper diets and live a healthy lifestyle. In 2005, the department of the U.S. Agriculture had published a |

Expressions of Love - Mrs. DallowayExpressing your feelings to someone is not as simple as one may think or imagine. For love to grow and prosper, it demands to be expressed and felt all the time. One may have hidden affection for someone but it will fade away if it is only one sided. In the novel Mrs. Dalloway by Virginia Woolf, there are some characters who find it difficult to express their love, have hidden feelings or have their feelings fading away slowly. Richard and Clarissa are married but their marriage is more of a showoff to the public than actual marriage. Peter once proposed Clarissa but got rejected, while Lucrezia's love is fading away as Septimus's mental health worsen. Clarissa is well known only because of his husband who is member of Parliament in the Conservative government. Although he loves Clarissa but he always struggles to tell her that like if something prevents him in doing so. He blames Clarissa for that and thinks that she is too difficult and complicated to be understood. He is very show |

Photography in the Vietnam WarPhotographs do not lie; they represent the truest and most objective form of journalism, because of this, the work of photojournalists in the Vietnam War was the main influence of changing views on the home front, which made the war end earlier. There were many photojournalists in the war, but Larry Burrows and Denis Gibbons were two of the most influential. The Vietnam War was also a part of the Cold War, and the ongoing 'war' between the US and the Soviet Union. Photographers have been a part of wars for decades however the Vietnam War was the first war that was shot and actually shown to the people at home on a daily basis. This is why a lot of people think that photojournalism was the most influential part of changing people's views back home. However, some people disagree that photojournalism was the main influence and think that other factors were more important in changing people's opinions. The definition of a cold war is an 'intense economic, political, military |

Teenagers and CurfewsTeenager curfews have been around for centuries as the adults have tried to keep adolescents safe. Teenagers should be off the streets on certain days of the week at certain times. This would do so much for your community you live in. The curfew is for safety reason. It is not for safety but responsibility as well. There are many necessary reasons why teenagers should have a curfew. The first one is because they care for their teen and want them to be safe. Parents have a responsibility to take care of their children. They need to keep them safe and make sure they're doing the right things and staying out of trouble. It is also a matter of when to expect a teenager to be home and they should have a time they know in mind. Parents need to know when their child is coming home so |

Biography of Wilt ChamberlainWilt Chamberlain was a normal child, though he ended up being one of the greatest basketball players of all time. Entering Overbrook High School, he was 6'11 and realized he needed to focus on basketball (Straub, Browne 3). As a child he was an avid track and field runner and thought basketball was a sissy game. He and his family of eight eventually realized basketball, would be taking him to bigger and better things (3). Despite all of the people who had made fun of his height and speaking disabilities, "The Stilt" which was a common nickname he hated managed to work harder than any other athlete in the country and, coming out of high school, he was one of the top-rated basketball players in America (Straub, Browne 3). Wilt knew his ability was unmatched, but he didn't expect to have such a huge impact on the game. Growing up in a crowded home in a racially-mixed neighborhood in Philadelphia as a child, Wilt had 8 siblings, but he was definitely the most talented out of all |

Risks and Rewards in High School FootballSeptember 13, 2013, was sixteen year old Damon Janes' last football game. Why, because he was pronounced dead in a local Buffalo hospital three days after that game. His cause of death, brain damage. Janes took numerous hits to the head during a varsity football game. He seemed perfectly healthy, but in actuality, he suffered brain swelling, bleeding, and bruising all resulting from numerous hits to the head while playing football. Janes was only one of the eight high school athletes who died in 2013 from the brain and spine injuries they suffered while playing high school football. In addition to brain trauma, heart conditions, asthma and heat stroke have contributed to three times more deaths in high school players than in college football; all of which may have been prevented. Since the early 1900s the game of football has continuously evolved in an effort to protect its players from injuries and fatalities. In fact, the rules and equipment changes over the years have done just |

A Trip to the Emergency RoomEvery day, people suffer from disease. As long as there is medicines to cure diseases, those patients still have chances to be saved. Patients are saved in hospitals where doctors, nurses and researchers work hard to bring them back to life. When I was a patient in a hospital, I observed a lot of activities there. The experience linked me to my future career-nurse anesthesia. The first time I went to a hospital in an emergency state was a year ago. My health was in a dangerous situation. I could not breathe comfortably and I had to use oxygen to help me breathe. I could not feel anything around me, yet my eyes did open a little. I could see the light on hospital's ceiling, and then I drifted in sleep. When I woke up, I realized that I was lying on a rigid bed with a suffocating smell of sterilization gas. At first, I heard someone crying outside my room, and I guessed that someone was really in pain. As I walked around the hospital, I saw people coming in and out. I went to the registration office to ask where I was at and learned I was aware that I was at emergency ward. As long as I exited, I saw nurses and doctors actively walking. They looked beautiful in |

Attending and Funding CollegeCollege may not be the right choice for everyone out of high school, but one can never know until they try. Those who choose to attend college should prepare themselves for a long and exciting ride full of experiences that will build character. Any level of higher education is beneficial to not only the way an individual perceives the world, but also the way the world perceives the individual. An education opens the mind to new ideas and allows students to gain access to opportunities that were not accessible prior to a formal education setting. College can be a short or even a long-term investment that results in significant debt, but it is worth every penny towards a successful future. In the essay, "A Lifetime of Student Debt? Not Likely," by Robin Wilson, it breaks down the benefits of educational debt and provides quantitative facts about the reality of college debt. Wilson starts the article by firmly stating "despite stories of a large number of students who face |

Petition and Proclamation Cloth Workers and MerchantsThe "Petition of Yorkshire Cloth Workers "(1786) and "Proclamation of the Leeds Cloth Merchants" (1791), documents the first big social change brought on by the English Industrial Revolution. The Petition of Yorkshire Cloth Workers in 1786 , was written in the form of a letter written by the factory workers addressed to the owners. This petition details the negative aspects of the new industrialization and transition from hand -woven textiles to machine produced textiles. The factory workers complained of such issues as, loss of jobs.increase in the length of the workday and strict supervision from managers. But, a mere five years later, the Proclamation of the Leeds Cloth Merchants in 1791, was written by the cloth merchants praising the Industrial Revolution. The proclamation states many positives, such as the Industrial revolution and the transition to machinery has put England at the very top of the cloth empire, that the global demand will only mean higher wages and the need for new and improved technology is paramount to achieve this. Prior to the Industrial Revolution, cloth workers did their trade by hand and in the comf |

The Reputation of Women in Trifles by Susan GlaspellIn Susan Glaspell's Trifles, published during 1916, she uses Mrs. Wright to represent the reputation of women. It starts as an investigation murder scene at an abandoned farmhouse. Men and women then go to the place to investigate for the evidence. However, finding an evidence is not then most important thing that Glaspell is trying to show the audience, but the representation of how society think of women. Most of that time, men view women as having lower status than themselves. Women are expected to serve men and accept their fate of unequal treatment from their husbands. This situation happens with Mrs. Wright, who murders her husband due to the fact that he kills her precious bird, which represents her only hope in life. Therefore, Glaspell uses Mrs. Wright to show the inequality women face in that society Susan Glaspell is an American writer who was born in 1876 and she graduated from University of Chicago. Two of her notable works are the Trifles and Alison's house. Glaspell al |

Composers Hindemith, Wolf-Ferrari and DunhillPaul Hindemith was a violinist, violist, teacher, conductor, and composer. Early in 1934, the Nazi party began a campaign to discredit Hindemith; which resulted in a boycott of the composer's works. In January 1935, Hindemith was given a six-month leave from his teaching job, but was eventually able to return in 1937, the year the boycott was endorsed by the music division of the Nazi party. He was also offered a series of concert tours abroad, to have his music published, and to enter into an agreement with the Turkish government to establish a steady musical life in that country. In 1937, Hindemith fled to Switzerland with his family. He resided there for one year before moving to America in 1940, when he became an American citizen a professor at Yale. The Attacks at Charlie HebdoCharlie Hebdo is a French satirical magazine that has been running for years, which I would personally describe as quite left wing and very secular as it appears to depict all aspects of society in a very crude humorous way. Over the years Charlie hebdo has been sued nearly 50 times. The attack was due to the much controversial content of the magazine mainly of its depictions of the prophet Muhamad as in some interpretations of Islam any depictions of Muhammad are strictly forbidden. In 2006 the magazine depicted twelve images of the prophet Muhammad including an image of a weeping Muhamad with the text "Muhammad overwhelmed by fundamentalists". This sparked huge amounts of controversy and made the magazine very well-known and highly condemned around the Muslim world. The magazine was brought to court due to this publication and was attempted to be prosecuted for hate speech by the French council for Muslim faith, however they were unsuccessful and before the case had finishe |
