Symbolism in Cathedral by Raymond Carver

"Cathedral" by Raymond Carver, is a uniquely written short story that symbolizes the importance, knowledge and joy of understanding that can be gained by overcoming prejudices and fears. I describe this story as "unique" because of the way it is written; the sentences are very short and to the point, which was unusual in comparison to most literature that I have read. This story is about an unnamed man (the narrator) who is put in a situation where he is forced to socialize with a blind man named Robert. This situation occurs because Robert is an old friend of the narrator's wife, and she arranges for him to stay at her home for a visit following the death of his wife. It is very clear from the beginning that the narrator has no desire to have any association with the blind man, or any blind man for that matter. In the very first paragraph, he very bluntly tells us his disdain for this visit with to-the-point sentences such as "I wasn't enthusiastic about his

Olaudah Equiano and the Horrors of Enslavement (1757)

This paper analyzes a document in the primary source textbook Major Problems in American History Volume 1: To 1877 by Elizabeth Cobbs Hoffman, Edward J. Blum, and Jon Gjerde. The document to be discussed is titled ‒ African Olaudah Equiano Recounts the Horrors of Enslavement, 1757." This paper will also analyze information on the same issue from the secondary source document tilted The Unfinished Nation by Alan Brinkley. This paper will use these documents to describe the brutal treatment of African Americans as they were being captured and sent overseas to work as slaves. During the 1600's and 1700's the slave trade was booming. At first, mostly the Portuguese were controlling the slave trade, then the Dutch and French gradually joined in, and by the 1700's the English had dominated it. Slaves were wanted and needed for a number of reasons, some were to be domestic servants but the majority of slaves were needed to do labor for a wide assortment of crops. Some of these cro

Roosevelt and the New Deal

Roosevelt's New Deal was implemented when he was elected into office in the early 1930s. Roosevelt wanted to alleviate the impact of the great depression by introducing the three R's, Relief, Recovery, and Reform. FDR was successful to a certain extent; however, he was not able to completely reduce the country's economic instability. Because of the acts implemented during Roosevelt's relief, recovery, and reform program, he was able to provide jobs to the unemployed, recover the banking system, and reform so that the public would trust the government once again. During the early 1930s, Roosevelt was elected; he immediately attempted to provide relief to the U.S. by establishing several acts to alleviate the economic instability in the U.S. Roosevelt enforced the bank

Queen Elizabeth I and A Midsummer Night's Dream

The headstrong and chaotic personalities of the female characters in A Midsummer Night's Dream represent Queen Elizabeth I's resistance to male dominance throughout her reign as a Monarch of England. In A Midsummer Night's Dream, Shakespeare not only composes a simple and thoughtless comedy, but he constructs a social commentary that investigates the various gender roles and explores the inferiority of women in Elizabethan society. In A Midsummer Night's Dream elements of social critique are present in the opening seen with the conflict between Hermia and her father Egeus. Rather than submitting to her father's wishes, Hermia's headstrong attitude questions the belief that women are thought to always submit to the wishes of the male dominant authority. This independent spirit in a woman is a complete contradiction of the way women were believed to act at the time. At the time when Shakespeare composed this play a woman's role in society was limited to that of the wife and mother. Her

Employees and Economic Structures

Introduction Since the last two decades, the economy structure has been facing a transformation in the nature of employee and work. There is a growing level of service sector work in the world, especially the interactive service jobs. According to Sheane's study (2011), nearly three-quarters of all jobs in UK are the service industry. Besides, service sector growth speed in economy proportion more than other sectors, and this trend is still continuing. In the service sector, the 'customer service' like emotional and aesthetic component of the employee are significant for its competitive strategy. Therefore, research on emotional labour and aesthetic labour in the service sector could provide more suggestions for employee relationships and organizational management. Hairdresser is a typical occupation of interactive service work. Therefore, hairstylists are an ideal example to demonstrate emotional labour and aesthetic labour. On the one hand, they are workers who constantly nee

The Rwandad Genocide is a very important event in history, as is the Holocaust, both of these events are somewhat similar in the way people were treated, the rights they had, and the killing of many innocent people. Lyotard's Account of Avant-Garde Art

The question about the nature of art, what it is or how it is to be measured/judged, has been asked over and over again by various people that have in turn came up with various answers. It is not an easy question since what most understand from the word "art" is not something unified, at least on the surface. While some take art as an imitation of the world, others take it as a mere expression, not related to the outer world but derived from the inner psyche. This essay will take as its subject the somewhat feeling-oriented and anti-rationale account of art, which is modern art that is called the Avant-garde, by Jean-François Lyotard. Lyotard, in his work The Sublime and The Avant-Garde, talks about the change in our understanding of art through the notion of the sublime, which he claims to be the driving force of the avant-garde. In this essay first Lyotard's account will be explained, through the explanation of his understanding of the sublime and how this notion of subli

Sir Gawain and the Lord's Wife

Many of the characters in Sir Gawain and the Green Knight have supernatural powers. This is true with not only male characters but female as well. Though women are shown with a large role, their role is not a positive one in this tale. Instead of showing the female characters as individuals the unknown author shows them as a basis for the stereotypical female of that time. For instance, Lady Bertilak (the lords wife) plays a major role in this story testing chivalry but does not stand as the most honorable character. She is described purely by her sexuality labeling her as beautiful as opposed to wise. "Her chin is pale,/ her cheeks are ruddy red with health;/ her smile is sweet, she speaks with lips that love to laugh" (1200). The wife is sent to Gawain to test his honor and chivalry. In the fourteenth century females were often viewed as inferior to t

British Rule and the Muslim Revolution

In 1803, the Mughal kingdom down-fell. This conclusion happened from many days before due to the inner weakness of the Indian- subcontinent. The Mughal rule, in one word, had been easily turned in the hand of British Imperialism very easily, the power was given to the british , even before they realized their faults. Even if they saw the effects or predict the future they didn't give any kind of heed to it, due to their carelessness. The large and abundant riches wealth of Indian sub continent have been famous and its stories of abundant wealth have been rumoring and spread around the whole world. the pirates and traders of the europe have been attracted towards these immense riches and wealth of India which brought them here, which ended by the losing freedom in theirr hands. and later on the fate gave the winning pearls to the imperialism of the British. But what's done had been done, it was too late for them, every one woke up, every one became astonished; all that was left w

Lose Yourself by Eminem

Featured as the main single on the soundtrack to rapper Eminem's biopic film, 8 mile, the song, "Lose Yourself", is seemingly the perfect theme song for the underdog. Written and performed by Eminem," Lose Yourself", gives voice to the need for one to take advantage of every single opportunity that comes his or her way because no one knows which opportunity might be the one that will change his or her life's trajectory. This essay will examine how the rapper effectively employs ethos, pathos and logos in his lyrics to convey his view of life-you only have one shot. Born Matthew Marshall, III, American rapper, producer and actor, "Eminem", represents himself as an authority on notion of carpe diem. Before Eminem takes his audience on a lyrical voyage through his life via his autobiographical lyrics in "Lose Yourself", he opens the song with a rhetorical question asking his audience if they had "one shot, or one opportunity" would the

Ghengis Khan and the Making of the Modern World

Genghis Khan is said to be one of the greatest rulers in all of history. He conquered lands from Zhongdu (Today known as Beijing) all the way to Baghdad. He gained control of land by using many unique warfare tactics, a strong army formation and a lot of trickery. He also used propaganda and acceptance of new people to gain and keep control over land. He also instituted new laws that helped his army, society, and his new conquered lands to be successful. All of these things helped Genghis Khan conquer and keep control over his new land. Technology had a huge impact on Genghis Khan's rule over his land. Land cultivation techniques and communication held great mind and his ideas to defeat the Song dynasty's technology. The Islamic and European empires fell due to the fact that the Mongols had better weapons and better strategic ideas. Genghis Khan spread his technology and ideas through the people he conquered and by merchants and travelers that went outside the Mongols territory. Geng

Story of My Father

How to start a story that has no beginning or end? Here I am, alone in my room, even after all these years your image is not erased from my mind, your firm gaze and sometimes even threatening look troubles my mind and my existence. You demanded of me too much, that I always felt that no effort of mine was enough to satisfy you. However, I always admired and loved you. How not to do it, after all you were my father. Like many parents before mine, and many who do the same for their children after my passage through this world is over, my story is no different from any other story of a boy who grew up in a distant country in South America during a military dictatorship, and a father recently retired after a long and successful military career. My father, a tall man with tanned skin, athletic figure, and penetrating gaze, grew up in a small town in Ecuador, called Vinces, which the locals call "Little Paris", located two hours from Guayaquil, the city where I was born. My father

Argumentative Debate - The Right to Bear Arms

What would be the effect of depriving ordinary, law-abiding citizens from taking up firearms in self-defense? Society has placed blame on the availability of firearms for countless homicides, domestic abuses, robberies and many other senseless crimes. In fact it is people that kill people, not guns. Not only do firearms play a large role in self protection, but also the use of firearms as sport has become very popular and needed. The hunting of deer and other wild game keeps the animal population low enough to keep them from starving. Onlookers have become a huge helping hand to law enforcement as of late. Outlawing guns would not necessarily lower crime rates countrywide, but more likely only stop the lawful citizens from intervening. In this country people have always had the right to bear arms; it has not only become a hobby, but also a sport. The right, that the American people have become so accustomed to, should not be taken away, but instead purchases more heavily regulated and

The British Constitution and Contract Law

The British constitution is one of the very few uncodified constitutions in the world. There are many reasons provided for this by various political philosophers. Although the absence of a codified constitution raises questions as to what institution of the government has the ultimate power, the various coexisting institutions of the United Kingdom undertake the responsibility of governance while Parliament is the law making body. This division of powers allow the uncodified constitution of Britain to operate smoothly. The debate about this kind of governmental system has always raised the question about what ought to be and what in fact is the ultimate controlling institution in the British political system. This essay in the first part aims to define, distinguish and analyse the concepts of parliamentary sovereignty (PS) and rule of law (RoL) which will help in the discussion and analysis of questions raised by the case of Jackson1 and how the issues raised in that case is seen by v

Sternberg's Theory of Love

A lot of people wonder what love is. For centuries people have tried to explain the mysterious phenomenon that is love. Is it an emotion that can simply just not be explained or is it more like a chemical reaction? Is it the feeling you get when you're with your significant other or the is it feeling you get when your with your family? Is there only one type of love or are there many? If you ask around people will give you many different answers. A man named Robert Sternberg came up with a theory. He said that love was attributed to combinations of three things intimacy, passion, and commitment. Intimacy according to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary is "something of a personal or private nature." Passion is defined by Merriam-Webster Dictionary has "a strong sexual or romantic feeling for someone." Commitment is "a promise to be loyal to someone or something" according to Merriam-Webster Dictionary. These three

Perfecting My Writing Skills

My name is Eduardo _______________. I am neither a great nor a proficient writer, but I do write when I have to. Whether its essays or short stories, I am able to say that I am not a constant writer, but my writing has improved drastically over the course of 18 years. Some years are better than others and I might have a motivational breakthrough and start writing some genius material. At times I might not pick-up the pen and paper for months on end. Like any other writer I have been influenced by many, our processes of writing are different, and some writing ends might need tying up and of course we all have our strength and weaknesses in writing and possibly that favorite subject to write about as well. I am not great but I am a writer. Coming from a Hispanic background and not having the English language as my first language as a child, the only firm of writing support I have ever received from my family is the legibility of my handwriting. Even till today my

Vaccine Safety and Testing

There are many procedures and medicines that determine the safety of our health. Expanded technology and enhanced thinking brings new ideas for longer, healthier lives. Vaccine tests, and other lengths, such as safety reports, are held to ensure the health of the general public. A vaccine does not get released until it is proven safe and effective. The CDC, Center for Disease Control and Prevention, ensure the safety of vaccines with safety research done, by the nation's leading vaccine safety experts, assessing the cause of any possible risk factors, and also searching for adverse events. The CDC's Immunization of Safety Offices conduct three primary vaccine safety activities, which are: Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System, Vaccine Safety Datalink, and Clinical Immunization Safety Assessment Network. Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System, or VAERS, is "an early warning public health system where people can report vaccine concerns, that helps CDC and FDA detect possible side

The True Hero of the Iliad

"Sing, goddess, the anger of Peleus' son Achilles/ and its devastation" (Homer 1.1-2). So begins The Iliad, Homer's classic tale of the Trojan War and some of its finest warriors. In his ninth year of battle against the city of Troy, Achilles is introduced as the most courageous, honorable, and victorious of all the Achaian warriors. Having triumphantly led his troops through numerous battles, he is portrayed as the most noble among all Greeks, often being referred to as "the brilliant" and "swift-footed" Achilles. While his actions usually result in heroic and lionizing outcomes, as the story progresses it becomes apparent that Achilles motives are not always that in the nature of a true warrior. After his dispute with Agamemnon, Achilles' true nature shows through in his vindictive behavior, ultimately overshadowing his previous heroic attributes. Though Achilles loses sight of what it truly means to be a warrior, Patroklos, his close comrade, never falters. When all seems to be los

Love and Hate in Romeo and Juliet

Throughout the play, Romeo and Juliet are forced to show their love for others. When Romeo marries Juliet, he is forced to show love and respect for Tybalt. But when Tybalt kills Mercutio, Romeo's genuine love for Mercutio overshadows his love out of duty, and Romeo kills Tybalt, which leads to his banishment. Romeo kills himself when he cannot be with the woman he loves, proving that love is a much stronger emotion than hate. Shakespeare shows us that the two passions of love and hate are similar. Typically thought of as opposite emotions, in Romeo & Juliet, they are two sides of the same coin. Our young lovers turn their families' hatred for each other into insatiable passion. Passionate love is defined as: "A state of intense longing for union with another. Reciprocated love (union with the other) is associated with fulfillment and ecstasy. Unrequited love (separation) with emptiness; with anxiety or despair. A state of intense physiological arousal." (Hatfield

Biography of Ho Chi Minh

Introduction The individual who has a tremendous impact on me is a person I have never had an opportunity to meet. He was the first President of Vietnam who drove the entire country out of the haziness of oppression and enduring French colonialism. He was Ho Chi Minh, and I admire him because of different reasons. Firstly, Uncle Ho taught me to be faithful to the nation and dedicated to the people by sacrificing all his life for the purpose of the country and citizens. All that he had done was not for his benefit such as personal thriving; it was for everyone. Secondly, uncle Ho was a determined man in my mind. For instance, he decided to go overseas to gain new knowledge since he was a young adult so that he could rescue the country from enslavement. Lastly, although he could request for sumptuous equipment for himself such as luxuries meal and clothes by what he have done, however, he was austerity. He dressed in regular clothes and lived in a hut even worse than other people. In my

A Look at the Life of Sylvia Plath

Sylvia Plath was an American poet, novelist, and short-story writer. Born on October 27, 1932, in Boston, Massachusetts, she studied at Smith College and Newnham College at the University of Cambridge, before receiving praise as a poet and writer. Sylvia was clinically depressed for most of her life, and committed suicide in 1963. In 1982, she won a posthumous Pulitzer Prize for The Collected Poems. Plath is a well-known feminist writer. Sylvia has always felt that she is inferior to men and was victimized greatly by her father. Sylvia's own experiences with the men in her life comes out in a lot of her writing, and this style of writing is common for her. Her writing seems to be her response to the oppression she felt from men. Sylvia could face her father, and never found closure with the abuse she felt so she used her styling techniques and strong metaphors to feel some sort of relief. Sylvia was also tortured by her husband, and she was victimized by him just like she was by her f

Methods of Defining Religion

Since the eighteenth century, when the first rudimentary beginning was made in the study of religion in a scientific manner, scholars have been confronted by the problem of definition, which became more complicated with the rise of a philosophical humanism in Western Europe that denied the notion of the supernatural, (Harrison, 2006:1). Few seem to have difficulty in distinguishing between religious and secular institutions, yet there is widespread discrepancy regarding what "religion" actually means. In fact, some go so far as to question whether there is anything at all distinctive about religions. Hence, formulating a definition of "religion" that can command wide assent has proven to be an extremely difficult task. In this article I will endeavor to explain why "religion" is a challenging concept to define and citing some scholarly references in my argument. I conclude in my preamble that there are pragmatic reasons for favouring the formerly popular

Shaping the Future of Books

The digitization of millions of books and new technology has brought not only convenience but also many issues for everyone that partakes, or uses the technology needed to access these books, commonly referred to as "e-books". The "e" denotes "electronic". Several decades ago, the Internet was used only through a phone line to a house and now can be accessed anywhere or time from nearly every phone used today. As new technologies became more evolved, media and personal habits were taken to another level. Commonly, people now read local or world news on their favorite or subscribed internet news forum or setup email alerts for any particular news topic or location, which sets off an alert on the person's phone. The future outlook for books stores and libraries is not a positive one, nor is there hope for small newspaper companies. Reporters Alex Pham and David Sarno for the Los Angeles Times, created a series of writings on evolution of electronic books.

This story is about his experiences in the vocational education track in his first years of high school as well as, his involvement in the college prep later in his high school career. Both of these stories have a theme of if someone believes in you will find the ability to believe in yourself and this will motivate you to reach your goals. "I Just Wanna be Average" demonstrates this theme because throughout the entire story, Mike Rose explains that
