Social Influences on BehaviorThere are many things that influence human behavior, one of the biggest is that of other people. The field of social psychology looks at and studies "human behavior as influenced by other people and the social context in which this occurs" (McLeod, 2008). There is a wide variety of ways that people can influence the behaviors of others, most often in the form of a set of social expectations. There are particular expectations, or "proper" ways of behaving, for all the different types of social situations and we expect people to act in accordance with these (Kowalski & Westen, 2011). Sometimes the expectations are subtle, as in the roles that a man or a woman should play. At other times, we can more easily see the social influence, like the growing number of people who have been diagnosed with eating disorders. In both gender roles and eating disorders, the social influence can great. Gender Roles The first forms of social influence we see on the gender roles of m |

Budget Speech - Global EconomicsIn his 2009 budget speech, then Minister of Finance Trevor Manuel announced his response to the unfolding global economic crisis. With the overarching priority of the South African focus remaining in job creation and growth acceleration, some new changes to the budget were announced with the aim to "reinforce macroeconomic stability... and provide a temporary cushion to the South African economy" (Manuel, 2009:10). The changes he made were larger budget allocations to social welfare spending, to state employment and job creation initiatives, and finally to increased public works investment. Three budget speeches later, economists are now in a position to critically evaluate the success of the measures implemented from 2008-2012. This essay will assess the effectiveness of countercyclical spending in South Africa before moving to a discussion of the wage bill and infrastructure outlays in the context of South Africa as a developmental state. The analysis starts with the broade |

Compare and Contrast Jay Gatsby and Tom BuchananTom Buchanan and Jay Gatsby show both similarities and differences throughout the novel, The Great Gatsby. This essay discusses the characteristics that prove Gatsby's and Tom's unlikeness, as well as their alikeness. Two wealthy men who love the same woman must share some common characteristics, however, Daisy, the most important woman in both their lives, only picks one of them, so there must be some differences. Jay Gatsby and Tom Buchanan display their differences through their wealth, their temper and their social aspects. Tom, from East Egg, and Gatsby, from West Egg, display a significant difference in how they earn their money. Mr.Buchanan was born into his old money riches, whereas Gatsby comes from nothing, working his way to the top by laboring on Dan Cody's Yacht and illegally bootlegging. Considering Tom is born with money and privilege, he is used to spending his money very casually. On the same note, Gatsby spends his money with ease too, but for a different purpose. & |

The Death of a Ball Turret Gunner by Randall JarrellThe Death of a Ball Turret Gunner by Randall Jarrell is a super short poem but packs a powerful meaning. Randall was clearly saying that war is like a paradox or in other words like an abortion. He explains the ball turret area as womb like enclosure in the plane's belly when he states, " From my mothers sleep" and " I hunched in its belly." Told from the gunner's point of view of his last moments of life. "I fell into the state" the gunner never got to live to his full potential. The different state provides a death womb for the gunner. Going "into state" the gunner "loosed from its dream of life" knew his death was upon him not even having a fighting chance. Waking up only to die among the "black flak and the nightmare fighters." His body only to be washed "out of the turret with a hose." The poem leaves a scar on peoples mind that war is a result of wasted life Randall Jarrell wrote this poem while he was in the m |

Narrator of The Cask of AmontilladoEdgar Allen Poe's "The Cask of Amontillado" is the story of a man who leads another man into the catacombs of Italy to commit murder upon him. There is also another sub plot that the man telling the story is giving a confession of this act, from around 50 years earlier, to a priest so that he may have his sins forgiven and be let into heaven. The plot is driven in a particular manner by the narration of the story. The narrator in this story has an ulterior motive that greatly changes the way the story is told. In this work, the person telling the story, a man named Montresor, is making a confession about committing the murder of a man named Fortunato. Because the narrator is making a confession of his sins in order to get him into heaven, he has a way of twisting details to make the person being confessed to, and even the reader, feel like he wasn't completely in the wrong for committing murder. The narrator uses these twisted details in order to change the story into one tha |

Analysis of A Dream Within a DreamEdgar Allan Poe's "A Dream within a Dream" deals with a man's struggle to find out the meaning of life. This poem seems to be about a man parting from his lover. The poem is in first person narrative and the speaker seems to be the man. The audience is mainly the people reading that poem however, Poe may have targeted a more gothic audience. This poem contains nine couplets and two triplets. For example, the opening stanza of "A Dream within a Dream" starts off with a triplet, and then switches to couplets. The setting of this poem is near the sea. This setting correlates to the anguish that the narrator faces while questioning his life and all the dreams that he was unable to accomplish. The poem contains two stanzas that have two separate but connected scenes. The juxtaposed stanzas contrasts in many ways such as their two different tones. The first stanza is calm and peaceful part of the poem because it is orchestrated in a departure from the narrator's love. The first stanza deals with the narrator kissing a woman. They seem to be lovers that are parting from each other. After the man kisses her, he tells the woman that she |

Major Christian HolidaysAsh Wednesday marks the beginning of the Lent season which I will describe later in my paper. During Ash Wednesday mass is held in church, after the mass priests or other church officials mark people's foreheads with a cross of ash. These ashes is not just any ashes. Ashes used to mark people during this day was made from palms used in Palm Sunday from the previous year. The ashes are christened with Holy Water and are scented by exposure to incense. While the ashes symbolize penance and contrition, they are also a reminder that God is gracious and merciful to those who call on Him with repentant hearts. Lent is an extremely important time period in many denominations of Christianity. It is mostly practiced by Lutheran, Methodist, Presbyterian, Anglican, and Roman Catholic churches. Lent is a period of forty days prior to Easter. In Western Christianity Ash Wednesday marks the first day or the beginning of the Lent period, Sundays are not included in the forty day count. The Marriage of FigaroThe Marriage of Figaro was an instant success throughout the opera community with the way it did early on. Many people have seen this play and it is performed all over the world. I really did enjoy this performance on Youtube. This was definitely a little different seeing the performance on Youtube instead of going and seeing the opera performed in person. Overall, I really enjoyed the performance and I thought the smooth tones throughout the performance were quite peaceful. Mozart was one of the most prolific composers of his time, for that matter of all time. He is widely known around the world for his musical pieces and even his opera. This opera was actually not done by Mozart's willingness. Mozart actually was ordered by King Joseph to compose the piece. Before I even listened to the opera on Youtube I had actually heard of this opera before. Last year I attended Belmont Abbey which is a private division II college in Belmont, North Carolina and we had a class there called First Y |

Rhetorical Analysis - Fashion AdsWhat do you do every morning when you're getting ready to start your day? Usually, you look for something to wear or do your makeup in some cases. So when you step out, you would look up to date with today's everyday fashion or look. Vogue was one of the first fashion magazines, created in 1916, giving people a new outlook on fashion. In the Vogue British ad, you will notice that the women have long natural hair, beautiful skin tone, tank tops and other blouses. Fashion was more natural and bare. W Magazine, created in 1972 ad shows how with time the progression of fashion has become more flashy, dramatic, and flamboyant. Fashion now has become even bigger than it was before. Fashion from past eras versus now has changed, which is evident as seen throughout the ads extensive use of wording. Notice there's a major difference from things of the past then, as they are now. Should fashion take as much out of life as it does now? These two ads attempt to convince the reader that fashion |

Legalizing Marijuana in AmericaMore than half the population of America supports the legalization of marijuana. Already twenty states have legalized marijuana, some for medical purposes while others like Colorado and Washington, for recreational purposes. Alaska may soon join this league as it is pushing for the legalization of pot and has already scheduled a vote on this matter on 19th August, 2014 during the primary elections. Benefits of legalizing marijuana in America far outweigh the negatives. For instance, a report released by the FBI points out that thirty U.S citizens were arrested every minute by the police in 2012 for possession of pot. In the same period, over 750,000 U.S residents were arrested and jailed for marijuana related offences most of them young Americans. The human cost of arres |

The Story of Young Goodman BrownThe story of Young Goodman Brown's expedition with the devil becomes his disparaging revelation of human nature. In the beginning of the story Young Goodman Brown is faithful to the idea that the people he respects and loves remain pure and stray from sin. At the end of Brown's experience he has lost his faith in humanity, and continues through life scornful and distrustful. Brown realizes throughout his trip through the forest that the people he venerates are not the holy figures that they appear. When Goodman Brown loses his faith he spins into madness and after his own maniacal rage he is wary of the evils others commit. Brown's human perception is altered by his realization that even the most honorable and purest of visages can hide a soul riddled with treachery. Initially during Brown's walk with the devil he is timid and reluctant to continue on their forbidden path. He first attempts to stray from his companion by claiming that he would shame his father's memory by continuing on their journey. His pride in his family's name prevents him from tainting his conscious. The devil undermines this excuse by reveali |

Leadership in MacbethThe great visionary Cesar Chavez once said "We cannot seek achievement for ourselves and forget about progress and prosperity for our community". A great leader must prioritize the needs of his own people ahead of his own. They must put aside what they want and strive to achieve what his loved ones want. When one does not do this they become over ambitious and selfish and hurt the ones they love. When Macbeth is told that he has been promoted to Thane of Cawdor, which is right after he hears a prophecy from the weird sisters saying that he is to gain this title ,and also become king, he says in an aside, "The prince of Cumberland! That is a step On which I must fall down or else o'erleap, For in my way it lies. Stars, hide your fires; Let not light see my black and deep desires. The eye wink at the hand, yet let that be Which the eye fears, when it is done, to see" (1.4.55-60). In order to find Macbeth's tragic flaw one must analyze this aside and wonder what it is |

Impressions of San Francisco HotelsThe Grand Hyatt San Francisco From the outside, the building is very large and the appearance is not conspicuous, but it is located at Union Square that might be easily to be found. After walking in the hotel, it gives a feeling like siting and reading in the study at home. There are several studies are with some sofas and chairs. Then the lobby could make me feel comfortable and I would like to sit down and wait for check it, if I were a business man who needed a hotel to have a rest. However, the front desk has few staff that people might need to wait a little longer; also the design of the front desk probably coordinates to the lobby, quiet and concise. Finally, I think this hotel is made for businessmen who always fly round the nation. Its construction looks like a huge castle which makes it more beautiful and attractive. Its entrances are also conv |

In Search of Simplicity in Into the WildIs it ethical to completely abandon your life, and live off of the land? A life free of laws, regulation, free of friends and family. In Jon Krakauer's Into the Wild, the protagonist, Christopher McCandless does exactly that. He grew up fairly happy, but as he got older he realized how materialistic and brainwashed his parents were, reflecting America. He sees how greedy and wasteful people get when they are exposed to all of these luxuries of life, and how it blinds them from what really matters in life. Based on Chris' observations and experiences, he grew up the opposite, not wanting everything, and only wanting what he needs. All of these displeasing images McCandless sees, are exactly what eventually drives him to drop everything and goes off on his wild adventure, "Into the Wild." Christopher comes from an upper-class family who has seemingly achieved the "American Dream." Christopher's father, Walt, was a cheating and selfish man was an antenna specialist emp |

David Hume on SuicideThough the gift of life is a virtue so invaluable that it would seem immensely farcical to throw it away, the reality of suicide is upsettingly prevalent in Canada, and all over the world. Though it seems stereotypically immoral, philosopher David Hume defended the act, labeling suicide as sometimes permissible. Using absurdist and deontological ethics, I wish to prove that although Hume's argument is valid, the argument is not fundamentally sound. Hume's positioning on suicide is reflective of Epicurean and Platonic philosophies, because of its emphasis on living a good life, rather than a long, unpleasant one. The main fundamentals of Plato and Epicurus's philosophies rely on maximizing pleasure and reducing any evil in one's life. David Hume's innovative essay entitled 'Of Suicide' generated discussions of how one's life could sustain so much evil, that the possibility of suicide could be seen as permissible. The essay was published in 1782, a time when philosophers were tra |

Book Review - Candide by VoltaireHistorical fiction is a genre, which fascinates many readers. Voltaire is a very well known writer and philosopher from 18th Century France. In the year of 1759, Voltaire wrote one of his most famous satires, Candide. The genre of historical fiction varies greatly in accuracy from story to story, but Voltaire chose to make this famous satire very historically accurate, in order for the people of his time period to be able to relate to it. Personally, I enjoyed this book very much and can see why it is so famous. I was continually interested as the story follows Candide through many fast moving events as he travels throughout Europe. In the beginning, young Candide was living with his uncle who was a famous Baron in Whestphalia, Germany. While Candide was living here, his mentor, Pangloss, teaches h |

The Courage of Jem in To Kill A MockingbirdCourage: Jem Finch Jem Finch is a very dynamic character, and portrays courage through bravery. From the start of the novel Jem's idea of valor, was simply touching the Radley house, and only then because, "In all his life, Jem had never declined a dare."(Lee 13). As Jem matures, and the story progresses, Jem's thoughts on what makes himself a courageous person change. Courage is a theme that shows precedence throughout To Kill a Mockingbird. Harper Lee uses a multitude of examples and characters to make this theme evident. Jem is the character that best allows us to derive the true meaning of the theme courage. Jem has a drive deep within himself to help others, he is brave and does what no one else dares to do, and learns from the examples set by his father. Jem's first acts of audacity was his interest in Boo Radley. A man described as a huge, evil beast of a man, who feasts on raw squirrels. When dared to touch the Radley house, Jem does so, "Jem threw open the gate and |

A Justification for TortureA 2014 Washington Post-ABC News poll found that 59% of Americans said that they support the CIA's interrogation methods for uncovering valuable intelligence information (Goldman). This, of course, is after it was made widely public that the CIA had employed "torture" methodologies – such as forced sleep deprivation and waterboarding – in order to derive information that may safeguard the United States from further terrorist attacks. The CIA's publicized detention and interrogation program has since been ended in 2009 by President Obama, and a Senate Intelligence Committee investigation into the program's interrogation techniques had, surprisingly, concluded by stating that torture methods such as waterboarding, stress-position placing, and extreme human confinement were ineffective means of acquiring information. The same report found that nearly a dozen individuals detained and tortured as terrorists were in fact wrongly held (Priest & Smith). Such reports would |

Sexual Desires In DraculaOur bodies are filled with a need to be sexually fulfilled, but the way in which these sexual desires are accomplished differs between men and women. In The novel Dracula, by Bram Stoker, the author presents both the similarities and differences in the way male and female characters are presented sexually. The erotic situations they are placed in and the symbolism of sex is a constant motif in the novel. These sexual interactions all seem to stem from one focal point. That focal point being Count Dracula. Dracula has manipulated almost all the characters and created a sense of sexual chaos in his never- ending search for blood. In the novel, both men and women are represented as capable of performing lewd acts that run parallel to the idea of rape. The male characters are introduced into performing the act in the scene that takes place at the site of Lucy's burial. Convinced Lucy has been transformed into a vampire, Van Helsing has persuaded Dr. Seward and Arthur to help him in disemb |
