Cuba, Castro and the Reinaldo Arenas

To an average American, all that goes on in Cuba and the Castro government is what we hear from the news. Unless you are a historian, you happen to have connections within Cuba or you just happen to take a class on the country itself, you only know what you are told. Reinaldo Arenas' memoir takes you to his country and relive his life throughout the revolution and all that he endured in his life in Cuba and in his exile. I was able to feel his pain through his words. He takes you on a journey that leads up to the reasons why he desperately needed to leave Cuba. Three themes that are emphasized throughout the book explain why. One apparent reason would be his lifestyle as a homosexual. The second is less obvious but important, his inability to trust most of his friends for fear of being turned in. Finally, the most important reason of all, the restrictions that were placed on his writings and the persecution he was subjected to because of it. Before getting deep into the reasons behind

The Real Strength of Dove Men Products

The commercial of dove men products claiming that the men who uses it is stronger and that cares. But cared in what sense who says or who measures men strength just by using a product. Dove care line or products have only emphasized on women but for some time now they have seen that not only women need to pampered men do to. The real strength of dove commercial for men invokes a sense of integrity, masculinity, caring, the aspects of fatherhood and how people view father's role in the family unit. The way to show that is by the company to show the commercial in the super bowl since many men look forward not only to watch the 49th super bowl but to see the advertising. Spot Trender, a research company [who did a study to see how people view the commercial concluded that,] "How viewers reacted to big Super Bowl commercials second-by-second. This year it's back on the case, starting with one of the first 2015 Super Bowl ads to be pre-released: Dove Men+Care's ode to fatherhood, w

Freedmen's Lives During 1865-1896

African Americans did not have it easy when first arriving to the U.S. They faced many years of pain and humiliation. For many years, they didn't know what life was like outside of slavery. When the 13th amendment was passed, they were finally called freemen. However, this momentous event soon turned out to be not so glorious. The lives of freedmen changed socially, economically, and politically during 1865-1896, because freedmen now had civil rights, sharecropping became popular in the South, and segregation occurred throughout the country. First, Freedmen's lives changed politically, because they were granted the right to vote. As shown in Document E, the 15th amendment grants the power for Freedmen men to vote. Document A also shows a Freedman voting. Not only was voting a big leap for Freedmen, but, as show in Document B, Freedmen could also now run for Congress. The reason these two things changed the Freedmen's lives politically, is

Around the world, there are many great countries that dominate or had dominated the world for years. In that type, we can cite the USA and France. France is a European country that had, over many centuries, imposed its language and its culture in almost every African country. In other side, USA is a country that fought out the England in order the have its independence, and since that time, it became the world greatest country in almost everything. Both countries have an important power position over all activities sectors. They are both members of the OECD, members of the United Nations, and permanent members of the Security Council. Each country has a VETO right as well as they are directed by a president who represent the voice of the nation. However, despite all these similarities between the USA and France, there is an urge gap of differences between them from politics to culture through the economy, but those differences don't affect the great quality of relationship between thes

Toni Morrison's Beloved

When the four horsemen, including school teacher from Sweet Home, came to 124, Sethe was terrified that she and her children was going to be brought back to the plantation. Sethe had to make the most difficult decision to kill her children, but only was successful in killing her baby, Beloved (Morrison, 174-180). Most people would say that Sethe made the wrong decision, but if we examine Sethe's character or personality and the conditions of living on a slave plantation, there will be better evidence to conclude that Sethe's decision is justified. One could argue that Sethe was being selfish because she did not want to be enslaved again, but throughout the novel Sethe always puts others first, and as a mother, she did not want her children to be raised into slavery or die as a slave. Another reason she could be said to be selfish is Sethe was able to go on and live her life, but Beloved was not even given the chance. However, although Sethe was able to live and remain free from slaver

Torture, Incarceration and War in the U.S.

The majority of Americans twenty years ago would agree that unwarranted, mass incarceration, torture and perpetual war are products of a morally corrupt society. The view of this in our society has changed drastically since. A facade has been set up to cultivate false fear in the minds of our population. We are indoctrinated to unquestioningly fear what our government deems as terrorism, mass drug addiction, and the crumbling of our holy capitalistic system which every American schoolchild is taught repeatedly to hold dear to their heart. Thus, through this, we find justification in these things that were once known as morally abhorrent. Hollywood Bush-era war propaganda, widespread neo-conservatism, and politically propagated theological beliefs have glorified violence, torture of the accused, and mass incarceration of nonviolent drug offenders. A sense of Nationalistic pride is created through this, we feel as if we are cleansing our society, ridding it of danger. This is a very dan

Desires Gone Wrong in Macbeth

In Shakespeare's Macbeth the story is set in the eleventh century Scotland. Macbeth, a noble kinsman to King Duncan, is approached by three witches with a prophecy. Their prophecy predicts that he will become Thane of Glamis, Thane of Cawdor, and soon after, the King of Scotland. Macbeth, being the loyal kinsman that he is, realizes that in order to become king, King Duncan would need to be overthrown or exiled. Neither of which, are part of Macbeth's mindset in becoming king, that is, until Macbeth informs his wife about the prophecy. This was the start of the influence of evil that was brought upon Macbeth's life. Macbeth is not worried about being king at all until the witches come to Macbeth with their prophecy. Lady Macbeth is able to persuade her husband into killing Duncan, thus making him king. The witches and Lady Macbeth cause not only a spark, but also an influential push into the direction of evilness. Macbeth is persuaded into killing Duncan by Lady Macbeth, which star

The Benefits of Mass Transit

With a population of almost 3.8 million people, the City of Los Angeles is the second largest city in the United States. The County of Los Angeles has almost 10 million people making it larger than New York City. Given such a large population base, and the geographic region in which the city is spread out over 4,752 square miles, it is extremely important for a metropolitan area such as Los Angeles to have a comprehensive mass transit system. Its mass transit program must be geared to not only accommodate its residents, but also provide efficient transportation to the millions of visitors that come to the City of Angels every year. Most cities across the globe that have great public transportation systems do not cover such large geographic areas. They are typically located in condensed high rise regions where the development of a metro rail is warranted because of the need to transport a great number of people in a relatively short distance. The task in Los Angeles is a little more co

Criminal Justice and Juvenile Rehabilitation

As of this moment there are many juveniles being sentenced to detention facilities as harsh punishments. The juveniles that are sent to these detention centers are mostly first time crime committers so they should be given the chance of rehabilitation. There might be some mistakes in which the juvenile was following their friends because of peer pressure and have been arrested without the consequences of the crime. Many situations come where the juvenile justice system should consider community based treatment like rehabilitation for the juveniles but instead the justice system would just incarcerate the juvenile. Rehabilitation should be the focus of the juvenile justice system and not just throwing kids in jails. The juvenile justice system needs to focus more on rehabilitation because it will lessen the time juveniles spend incarcerated. This will allow for more time to address the problems that made the juveniles become delinquents in the first place. The juvenile justice system wa

America - The Medication Nation

American Society has become more accepting of taking prescription medication for illnesses that, in the past, were dealt with without medication. The trend is growing toward acceptance of taking drugs for issues such as hyperactivity, depression and anxiety. Doctors are prescribing a wide range of medications and are prescribing them more frequently and without first using non-medication alternatives. Medications can have side effects that may lead to other health issues in the future. In the article "Medicating Ourselves" Robyn Sarah describes how differently hyperactivity is dealt with in today's society. When Sarah was in school a boy who misbehaved was labeled as a "bad boy" and was punished for his actions. Today, a child who acts out or does not follow the rules is recommended for treatment for Attention Deficit Diso

The Importance of Being Authentic

There are many ways we form a sense of self and there are numerous reasons why we should strive to be authentic! Batcheder says to accept the "center" of other person's worlds in order to gain a second opinion. This allows us to pass on what we learn to the next person helping to change the world. Walker embodies the fact that we are all beautiful in our own way and, although it may be hard she suggests we accept it no matter what. This allows us to recognize our own gifts a talents helping us keep hold of our inner selves. Zora Neal Huston is an example of someone who worked hard and strived to be at the top of society when everyone doubted her. While managing to keep her roots in mind, overcoming the toughest obstacles helped her gain positive perspective on her true potential. Malcom X by simple reading a dictionary opened his mind to the entire new world, helping us understand our place in society, educating us on how to find and become who we want to become. Mi

Science and Morality

The worlds of science and literature, seemingly academic polar opposites, actually rely upon one another. Neither world can exist without the other and this necessary symbiosis comes to the forefront of attention in novels that draw from a scientific pool of resource. Countless literary works have been written with science being its primary theme and inspiration. They use ideas written about scientifically and use them to write a literary work of art. Many novels can be written on the same scientific idea. For example, both "Copenhagen" and "Intuition" deal with the moral implications of science and the troubles that face the members of the scientific world. In both works the results of stressed and afraid scientists play a major role in the development of the plot, this directly relates to Steven Chapin's ideas present in his work "The Scientific Life". In this piece Shapin discusses the two perceptions of scientific minds, the first being scientists as

Roller Coasters of Life

Life is often referred to as a roller coaster. Sudden rises and falls, twists and turns when you least expect them. Similar to a heart monitor the way it jumps and drops with your heartbeat. But what if it were just a flat line? Well if we're referring to your heart monitor of course that would mean you are no longer alive. But metaphorically, this could mean the absence of ups and downs throughout your life here on Earth, means you aren't really living. But no one ever talks about what happens if your life stays on a steady downward line. Life is always referred to as a roller coaster but for some maybe that ride ends at the bottom of the drop, never to rise again. I believe that the poems "Greed" by Philip Schultz and "The Secretary Chant" by Marge Piercy are contrasting deeply in the sense that "Greed" shows the rollercoaster effect maintaining a sense of hope and understanding of happiness while "The Secretary Chant" shows the dark side of so

My Love of the Mountains

Huge trees, hiking, fishing, and family. All of the most peaceful things in the summer time. It's our first day up on the mountain and as we go outside to start our day we take a walk down the trail. The gravel turning sounds like bones being crushed; the bugs spray on my lips tastes so bitter and nasty, and the big blue sky above me looks more beautiful every time I look at it. Behind me I see my cousins driving four wheelers and they are all excited to go fishing. As we speed along the road going toward the river, the dust that is being kicked up under the wheels makes my throat feel dry and my eyes tear up. The motors from the four wheelers yell at us to give them a break but we simply ignore them. As we quietly creep up on the river, the fish are already jumping at grasshoppers and flies. Quickly, but ever so carefully, I throw my pole into the water. SNAG, my fly is gone; the fish is wrestling with it under the water, so I quickly hank on my pole

Concepts of Self Regulation

At first, my partner and I didn't know how to approach these students but somehow overcame that feeling since we didn't have that much time left with the project. Arriving there we got to approach our teacher Fernando Salinas, which is in charge of the Go-Center, and easily got to work on the project. He set up appointments with classes all around campus, which was a huge help for us, and that was our start up plan. The very first day we actually got started, we approached around 22 students and explained to them top to bottom in regards to the project. As Corno & Mandinach explain, "Self-regulation of cognition and behavior is an important aspect of student learning and academic performance in the classroom context."(1983). We explained three major components especially important for classroom performance. First, self-regulated learning includes "students' metacognitive strategies for planning, monitoring, and modifying their cognition," meaning important strategies for planning a

Burrell and Morgan's Four Paradigms Framework

Introduction In this assignment, I will apply the Burrell and Morgan's Four Paradigms framework to analyse the organisational structure of Bank of China. The data for my analysis is mainly based on my past working experience in this organisation. In order to support for my structural analysis, the theory of bureaucracy developed by Max Weber (1947) will be employed. The assignment begins by discussing Burrell and Morgan's multiple paradigms with emphasis on the Functionalist Paradigm, as the preferred paradigm and the Weber's theory that I will apply to my study. The main part of this assignment will focus on analysis of researched organisation. It then draws some conclusions and recommendations based on the findings. My Analytical Framework/Paradigm The Four Paradigms of organizational analysis developed by Burrell and Morgen (1979) is one of the most widely applied paradigmatic frameworks in analysing organisations (Grant & Perren, 2002). The model classifies sociological theories

Managing Crisis and Building Team Spirit

Introduction Managing a Crisis or how a CEO manages a crisis can be a crucial factor in the success or failure of that organization. Although there may actually be multiple correct ways to go about solving or handling with the crisis, by picking an incorrect one, you could be putting your entire organization at risk. This holds true for both organizations participating in the Airplane game, as well as organizations participating in the game we call life. The stakes however for the game of life could be much steeper, we could in fact be talking about the loss of a career rather than just a loss of a grade. Although the CEO's of the Airplane game cannot actually lose their job, they do have their own grade, as well as the grades of their other team members riding on their shoulders. In order to be successful in their role of CEO of the Airplane game, it is very important that they display leadership skills that will help them in overcoming any and/or every crisis that comes their way thr

Manufacturing Methods and Processes

1. How is the pitch of screw threads measured? The thread pitch can be measured with a steel ruler, or a caliper or comparator can be used. The thread pitch is the axial distance from one thread groove to the next. By laying a steel ruler down the axis of a screw and counting the number of thread crests in a given length. A common mistake is to count the number of threads starting with "one". This will lead to a one pitch error. Make sure you start with "zero" for the first thread. To double check your pitch determination, check your pitch determined by count against your actual pitch measurement. 2. What is the difference in profiles between metric and imperial threads? Imperial threads allow sharp roots in internal threads, which is perfectly reasonable as there is no risk of material failure in this area from a stress concentration. Metric threads allow for flat bottom external thread roots which is also perfectly reasonable as it must be accompanied by minimum

Judging Physical Appearance

The way one looks does not express his or her talent. As people are becoming more modern tattoos and body piercings are becoming more acceptable. Tattoos and body piercing are still not favored by many businesses. People are often judged by their appearance. Someone once said, "Don't judge a book by its cover, it's what inside that counts." Roni is a hiring manager at a restaurant. When asked about hiring people on their appearance, he said, "I have been working in restaurant for 3 years, and I have always paid attention to applicant's appearance." He also rejected many applicants based on their clothing, piercing, and tattooing. His idea of hiring applicants based on their appearance changed, when he hired josh. The author, Bonny Gainley in page 661, supports the idea of judging applicants based on their appearance while some people are against it. Research Assignment - Memory

Memory is such a natural part of our everyday lives that we don't realize how big of a role it plays in how we function every day. Our brains change with experience. The brain cells respond, and record the environment around us and stores the information for later use. This is considered our memory. As our brain is developing, our memories get stronger. I'm sure everyone has wondered why they can't remember their childhood up to a certain age and what it was like being a baby. This is childhood amnesia, everyone experiences this because our brains aren't fully developed yet. For most people, it is impossible to remember anything younger then the age of 5. John Forbes shared his story in this documentary on how his premature birth as effected his memory. He is forced to write things down and stick to the same routines every day because his memory was never able to fully develop. Our memories are not only used to remember the past, but we also use it to help imagine our future. When we a

Greek and Roman Architecture

Over time Rome has built a lot of great structures that still stand today and still look great. The engineering and design that Rome used had an impact on how structures, monuments, and public works will work for the future. The Renaissance Era which were around the 14th century through the 17th century were greatly inspired by Roman and Greek styles and Rome was greatly influenced by Greece when it came to engineering and art too. The three Roman structures that will be presented in this paper will be the Colosseum and Pantheon. The first famous monument of Rome that will be talked about will be the Colosseum. The construction of the Colosseum began 70 AD under the emperor Vespasian. The construction of the Colosseum was completed around 80 AD. For a monument this big to only take ten years to build was unheard of back then. In order to build something this big many workers were needed to make this happen. There were an estimated 100,000 prisoners that were bought back to Rome as

Portrayal of Women in the film Blow Up

Over the decades films have been used as a way to portray human imaginations to the point that they are surreal. In fact, in the film "Blow Up", Michelangelo Antonioni reveals how women were mistreated in the 1960's culture, I argue that this representation remains inappropriate and sexist. Recent research shows that cultural norms have become a problem because it is keeping women from their potential and building their self-esteem. This evidence shows that media portrays the power and is a weakness in education for young women. Due to this film being noticed for its nudity and expressions of sexuality, does this make is ok to treat women the way they were treated in this film? Although we cannot control what the media puts out there and how it is presented, I believe that this film represents how women are degraded and mistreated. The characters in films have a huge impact, with regard to gender stereotype, on audiences of all ages. In the 1966 film "Blow Up" dire

Education: Power to Change the World

The functions of education is to create citizens whom positively contribute to society and pass on knowledge obtained to the following generations. By completing these functions of education, citizens will ultimately develop the ability to think critically. Since my education has caused me to develop this ability of critical thinking, I believe the education provided to me has prepared me for a future career; however, I believe I am unprepared in regards to effectively manage the responsibilities of adults. Education is the primary reason that slavery no longer exists in a majority of the world because education allows individualization to occur. Individualization allows for citizens to develop their own identity and contribute to society wi
