In Liberia the government is going back and forth on if this issue should be legal or illegal. Some view the death penalty as unfair because they feel like the state is taking that person from their family, others do not seem to be bothered with the issue and think do the crimes pay the prices. While the death penalty is becoming illegal in several states and is legal in many more states, regardless of what others think, the penalty should be continued to be used on criminals because it keeps them from harming other people. Themes of Wall-E

WALL-E is an animated movie produced by Pixar and Disney in 2008. Directed by Andrew Stanton, the story follows a robot named Wall-E, who is designed to clean up an abandoned, waste-covered Earth seven-hundred years into the future. WALL-E presents a cautionary tale by representing a potential future where we face the global impacts of overconsumption, corporate control, total lifestyle automation and cultural conformity. This urges the viewer to stop and look around at how their day to day actions determine their own future and the future of our planet. Stanton has used a number of devices to convey the warnings to the audience, including use of a futuristic, familiar, harsh dystopian setting, subtle symbolism, juxtaposition and clever characterization reversals. A number of film techniques such as camera angles, shots, movement, lighting and sound have also helped deliver these messages. The first important message Stanton presents in WALL-E is that overconsumption leads to exce

The Impact of Nationalism

When nationalism first hit Europe it caused social, political, and economical change. The ideals of nationalism are loyalty to a people, pride in culture, language, and religion, and desire to have independence. Many cultures were forced to join a nation that had no historical or cultural relation. In Europe social classes were in societies were categorized into three groups, the conservatives, the liberals, and the radicals. The conservatives were the people who wanted no political change in society. These people were mainly nobles who were educated and benefitted from the current society. The liberals were people who wanted a small amount of change in society and government. They wanted more authority in what happened in the government. These people were usually middle-class politics who had wealth and education, but they did not have a title as the nobility did. The last group is the radicals. They believed that there should be significant amount of change in the society in a short

Julius Caesar and Rome's Most Important Decision

Honesty, bravery, and loyalty are components that a good striving leader should possess. In William Shakespeare play, The Tragedy of Julius Caesar, soon to be emperor Julius Caesar is murdered by the Conspiracy and Rome is left powerless and out of control. Four armies meet at Philippi and they are not only fighting for their lives, but also to see who will become the next ruler for Rome. Antony, Brutus, and Cassius all possess positive and negative characteristics, but Brutus would be the best ruler for Rome because he is very intelligent & determined and that is the leader Rome needs. To begin with, Cassius may seem like a potential ruler for Rome he is very intelligent, but is meaningless when most of the time he acts cowardly and corrupt. Cassius is quite intelligent and you find this part of him when he has the discussion with Brutus. When Cassius and Brutus decide what their plan for the battle is, Cassius wisely expresses that "Tis better that the enemy seek us" (IV.ii

The Art of Communication

The world is a lonely place without the ability to communicate. I discovered this truth at an early age as a result of speech delay. When other children were learning to crawl, I crawled alongside them. When other children were walking and running, I walked and even sprinted ahead of them. However, when other children started forming complete sentences and were able to express themselves, I was unable to string a coherent sentence together until the age of five. Whatever thoughts I deemed comprehensible were, to others, gibberish. The clash of my thoughts and my expressions trapped me in a growing confinement of frustration. I have never underestimated the importance of words. The effects of my speech delay permeated throughout all areas of my life. At home, I couldn't tell my parents how my day went or even ask for the food I wanted. At school, administrators perceived my inability to speak properly as a symptom of mental impairment and assigned me to remedial classes in the special

Othello and Iago's Soliloquies

Othello is one of Shakespeare's most famous tragedies. One of the most infamous characters throughout this play is Iago. When Iago's name is mentioned, one can only imagine how the audience must feel being that he was a very treacherous character. However, in Iagos mind he is nothing like he is acting throughout this play. He believes that he is the victim, "I am not what I am"(1.1.66) and believes that he is justified to be the treacherous snake that he is. Victim? I think not. Iago has many soliloquies that show his true colors as well how he felt about everybody. Iago was overlooked to become lieutenant, therefore, manipulation, hatred and revenge was all that he possessed throughout this play. In Act 1 scene 3, Iago clearly states, "I hate the Moor" (1.3.387), meaning that he hates Othello. Now if we back up a little in 1.3, Iago is laying out his plan to Roderigo. What plan you might ask? The plan to have Roderigo continue to pursue Desdemona, which is Othello's wife. He goes on to tell

The Road to Resilience

How does one learn to deal with difficult occurrences in life? Considering the rapid rate at which time flies by, how can one cope with the changing environment? How can one overcome the pain of failing, of losing, of loving, of trying? The answer is simple-resiliency. It is known as the process of adapting well in the face of adversity, trauma, tragedy, threats or significant sources of stress. But being resilient does not necessarily imply a burden-free life. It simply shows that you were strong enough to hold on and move forward. Strong enough to go on despite the constant letdowns from people. Strong enough to be strong. It all dates back to when I first took an entrance exam in St. Pedra Poveda College. Having a dad who was an Overseas Filipino Worker, I was a kid who lived a suitcase life; Traveling to different places, moving to different houses, and shifting from school to school, gave me the confidence to believe that I was overqualified to enter any school I wanted without exerting much effort -- BIG MISTAKE. I was too complacent that even when I was already informed about the exams being arduous, I still insisted on relying through the basi

The main problems that Fonterra facing is that the profit of the company is decreasing a lot as compared by previous year. The profit of the decrease by 16% from the previous year. Richard III and Looking for Richard

In what ways does a comparative study accentuate the distinctive contexts of Richard III and Looking for Richard? Through a comparative study, one is able to identify the contextual differences and similarities between two texts. By studying the connections between Shakespeare's play Richard III and Pacino's adaptation "Looking for Richard", the change in context and respective values are made apparent. Shakespeare's constructs Richard III as propaganda in a strict political and religious society during the Elizabethan era. Thus, Shakespeare portrays Richard as an ambitious and evil character. However Pacino's production is free from such religious and political confines due to secularism, thus the purpose of his production is to educate and entertain modern audience. This meant that Pacino was not limited in his production, hence portrayed Richard as an ambitious but understandable character. Thus, a comparative study allows one to identify the connections between two texts to gain an

The Effects of Advertising on Children

The main purpose of advertisements is to persuade the audience about a product and to instill in the audience to keep purchasing their product. Advertisement plays an important role in society because it influence the minds of young children. In today's society, more children are watching more television, thus increasing the amount of advertisement that they see. Advertisers tend to target children because they are more vulnerable and easier to persuade. Between the ages of 2 and 11 years old, children see more than 25,000 advertisement a year on television (Levin). Advertisers tend to promote sugary sweets, soda, ice cream, pizza, and other kinds of unhealthy snacks, as well as name brand clothing items, and toys. Flashy magazines and billboards makes children wants to buy on impulse. Television advertise dangerous stunts, which influence children to do the same, which often ends with sometimes fatal results. There are five main negative effects advertisements have on children. Advertisements have a negative effect on children behavior. When a child sees a commercial that is advertising a certain toy that they want, they wa

Should NCAA Athletes be Paid?

The title "Student Athlete" refers to individuals who participate in an NCAA sport while attending a university full time. The lives of student athletes revolve equally around both the classroom and the sport of the athlete. Successful student athletes are known to be the pride and joy of their universities, and often represent the traditions and values that the colleges stands for. Acting as leaders on and off of the field, student athletes spend a great amount of time and effort committing themselves to not only better their sports, but their academics as well. Student athletes are held to high standards due to their magnified presence and reputation in the media and sports culture. Their skills as athletes contribute to the overall marketability of a college, and pull in millions of dollars in game revenue every season. For reasons like this, I believe that college athletes should be paid for their role as athletes. Athletes spend an incredible amount of time improving t

My Last First Date

Many people spend much of their life looking for someone to share their life with. As someone who has been married and had children and divorced, I can attest that this is no easy task. There have been many dates since my divorce but the one I enjoyed and will remember the most is what I hope to be my "last first date". Dates don't always have to go perfectly to workout perfectly for two people. My last first date is an example of this I will never forget. It was late July, which in upstate New York is a very hot month, I was at a pretty miserable point because I was missing my kids, who live in Washington, and had just returned home from a visit to see them. I remember it being early morning, I was at work, when I received a message on my phone. It was an old friend I hadn't seen in about 15 years. We traded messages for a little while and decided we should get together soon. Knowing I had to work late that night, I asked her if she had plans for the late evening, unfortunately she

Anthropology - The Desire to Acquire

Daniel Miller, Bourdieu, Deborah Posel, Baudrillard and other authors suggest that we consume things often for reasons other than simply satisfying our basic needs. Why, in a time of such plenty, do we consume at such high rates? Or rather, is it because of such plenty that we are driven to consume? We live in a time where even our children are dependent on a technological and materialistic way of life – for entertainment, education and even social status. By analysing my personal observations and investigating certain trends, this essay aims to bring to light the motive behind consuming more than what is necessary to satisfy ones basic needs. Without fully understanding or questioning our desire to acquire, we repeatedly aim to obtain 'things' merely for superficial reasons, often, under the pretences of trying to satisfy our basic needs. To guarantee a pleasurable life lived, we have filled our lifeless creations with significance and instilled great importance and v

Growth and Decline of the Dark Ages

In the fifth century, the Germanic invaders took over Rome. In effect to this, drastic declines in learning took place. The invaders knew neither to read not write, this then in effect caused illiteracy across all of Rome. This also caused the population to plummet because the Romans were leaving. The few that could read and write consisted of Priests and other high church officials. The Germanic tribes had rich oral traditions of storytelling and songs. Therefore, no written language existed. Language also saw a decline. Latin changed as Germans and Romans mixed together. The official language still lingered but unfortunately it could not be understood. The languages mixed together creating new words and phrases. The various languages slowly but surely continued to separate the already declining empire. French, Spanish and other languages evolved from this crazy mixed up language. Lower people in the social order were known as peasants or serfs. Although peasants aren't classified as slaves, life as a serf stil

WWII Hero - Oskar Schindler

Imagine a man who lies, cheats, gambles, and drinks... Now imagine the same man saving thousands of innocent lives. Imagine a man who was once known as selfish, risking his own life to save others. A man who was well-known and well-liked sent to jail for a group who were being persecuted. It would be hard to believe that this liar, cheater, gambler, drunkard and self centered man rolled into one would save lives, right? Well there is a man who actually did all that. Clearly, Oskar Schindler had a very positive impact on the Holocaust because he saved more than 1000 lives during World War 2 by risking his own life and losing all his money. First, I will consider how Oskar's childhood played a part in his involvement in the Holocaust. Then, I will discuss events that lead up to his involvement in the Holocaust. Finally, I will explain what positive contributions he had during the Holocaust. To begin, Oskar's childhood and upbringing was significant. According to Roberts, the first signi

Love Displayed by Heinrich Heine and William Blake

Tess Nader Kirk English II – Pre IB 22 April 2014 The More Pessimistic Side of Love Displayed by Heinrich Heine and William Blake A piece of yarn or string can hold something together, or with one pull, it can make something fall apart. It seems as if love works in the same ways; putting you together, or pulling you apart. These two extreme sides of love can be shown in the lyric poem "The Lotus Flower" by Heinrich Heine and "Broken Love" by William Blake. Heinrich Heine's poem is a self-therapy type of work portraying a girl as a lotus flower, getting excited when her lover comes to her at night, but showing the sorrows of love when he leaves. William Blake's poem is a speaker, possibly himself, giving advice that one is better off not announcing one's affection for another, but rather should remain "silent and invisible." So while Heine's poem explains love and its sorrows, Blake's poem suggests not being in love at all, which author portrays

Diffusion of Labor Standards in Africa

The article, "Diffusion of Labor standards from origin to host countries: cross country evidence from multinational companies in Africa", was written by Merina Ali and Adnan Seric (2014). The study examined diffusion of labor standards from origin to host countries by investigating whether better labor standards of Multinational Companies (MNCs) origin countries are correlated with higher wages of workers in host countries in Africa. Thus, they wanted to establish if labor standards of MNCs countries of origin resulted in higher wages in host countries. The authors' thesis was premised on that MNCs originating from countries with more rights of association and collective bargain and those coming from countries with unions that had strong wage bargain power were found to be paying significantly higher wages to their workers in host countries. Although the authors had good points and made some observations which could give a basis for discussion and further research in the fiel

Protecting Wildlife - Awareness and Action

As the statement suggests, there are many species at risk today. This essay will give some examples of endangered animals, argue for their better protection and explain what action could be taken now. Man is often to blame for the disappearance of species. Pollution from factories and cars causes severe problems. Some chemicals are being released into the environment, which are harmful to bees, for example. Arctic animals, such as polar bears, are in danger of extinction due to global warming. Other species, such as the white rhino, are facing extinction because they are hunted. If we let these beautiful creatures disappear, our world will never be the same. Think of a forest without any birds singing or an ocean with no whales. Furthermore, when s

Love and Arranged Marriages

Arranged Marriages have become a traditional way of marriages for some countries in the world. Some cultures would prefer arranged marriages over love marriages, however, this is not decided by the either of the two person who is marrying, but their parents instead. There are reasons why parents would prefer arranged marriages for their children than love marriages. In my opinion, love marriages would be a much better type of marriage compared to arrange marriages, which can also mean marrying by force. Having an arranged marriage, in my opinion would mean weaker love from the engaged pair. First of all, it is because two of them are originally forced by their parents to have a wedding with each other, whom they might not have even met each other before; therefore it would be difficult for the arranged pair to fall in love with each other. Because a person can be forced into a marriage but on the other hand, their feelings towards their partner can't be force

The Changing Times of Gender Roles

In modern day society roles of men and woman have changed immensely, our world is a different place for it and it is still evolving as we speak. What was once a very one sided man dominated world has slowly but surely changed with time. Woman now are more liberated today than ever before in history and the new modern world is feeling the growing pains of this change, even though the change is necessary, it is most certainly affecting our world and the way people interact with each other in rather problematic ways. Once upon a time not so long ago men were the sole bread winners, authority figures and the leaders of the world. Their roles were very definite and they played their part without any complaints as a whole. It was a simple way of life for men in that they would basically work and then return home to a home that was cleaned, dinner was ready, the kids were in bed and his clothes for the next day laundered and laid out for him. Never once did men ever think about all the wor
