The Problem with Cheating

There has been a recent survey of 400 students in grades 5-9. It revealed that up to 67 % of the students admitted cheating on schoolwork at some time. The reasons why were either "I wanted a good grade" or "It's a game and when the teachers aren't looking, it's their fault". The question teachers still ask is why they still cheat. The thing is that many don't get it sometimes or they don't understand either. A reason why a student may cheat is because they really want a good and there are consequences if they don't. Many students are always under pressure especially when doing an important test like a final exam. Many don't know what might happen if they don't do well on it. Teachers tell you it's just a grade and it shouldn't effect on how you feel about yourself. What they don't know is that other people will say that they are wrong. That you should have done better, "if you studied what happened why you got me an 80 instead of a 90 or 100". That makes the student downgrade themselves although the teachers might say that they are good and shouldn't worry. But the question they ask themselves is, then why have I been failing and not get

Education and Secondary Socialization

'The school is an important agency of secondary socialization. All children in the UK are given an equal opportunity to succeed' The purpose of this essay is to discuss the above statements in detail, explaining the differing educational achievements of social groups, specifically class, gender and ethnicity. Socialization is the process of social interaction that teaches the child the intellectual, physical and social skills needed to function as a member of society. 'Secondary socialization is the wider process of learning; a child learns what is expected of them, and what is acceptable/appropriate behavior, for them; within a small group that The essay title 'all children in the UK are given an equal opportunity to succeed' is a functionalist opinion and very much subjective. Children from a privileged, wealthy background, for instance, have an immediate advantage over the less-fortunate, in that they have the financial means to fund additional tuition, to purch

Television and Specific Programming

Have you ever heard someone say " a little never hurts", or "one time never killed anybody"? Well, the same thing happens with TV programming choices. If you put one violent show after another people will start getting mad at you unless you TV channel is called "TViolent" or "The Gory channel". People will start arguing because they want something different to watch that isn't blood, guns, and other violence. I think that TV channel should have a bit of everything but I also believe that if you don't like the programming of the channel you should go watch another channel. When people start arguing about the shows on TV, it's their fault for watching that channel. They could have easily avoided it by just pressing a button, but instead they chose the hard way. If you don't like the shows t

Legend: A Slight Stretch Goes A Long Way

One day many years ago, the gods in the sky were creating new animals for the land of Africa. Artemis, the god of nature, created an animal that he would call a giraffe. He gave them a spotted pattern and long legs so that they would be able to run quickly. With that, he placed them in Africa in a country called Nigeria. He looked over the giraffes and watched them as they adapted to the environment. He expected the animals to thrive in their habitat. However, after several days, it was apparent that there was a problem with the new animals. Artemis had made their legs far too long, so they could not move quickly at all and they were very clumsy. This made it hard for the giraffes to find food. Instead of eating other animals, because hunting was difficult, the giraffes tried to eat the plants around them. There weren't many

Aging Development in Adults

Let's face it we all age. The process begins the moment your mom gives birth to you. You may not like to think about getting older or getting gray hair but it's going to happen at some point in your life. "Aging is not a simple, straightforward progression through time" (Whitbourne & Whitbourne, 2014). Our book describes the view of development as biopsychosocial perspective which is a complex interaction between social processes, biological, and psychological stuff that happen as we age. I have been fortunate enough to be able to do an interview on someone who is older than 65. During this interview I learned many things that I didn't already know about my interviewee. For this assignment I was able to interview Daniel Burchfield. I'm going to call him Dan because that's what I have always know him as other than just calling him his last name. I conducted my interview through the means of Facebook and email. Dan is a seventy one year old white male who has been married fift

Justifying War in the Middle East

According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary the definition of the word justified is as follows: to provide or be a good reason for something and to prove or show to be just, right, or reasonable. How does this term apply to war and its principles? For thousands of years since the first war the main question being asked has been is war justified? Throughout history, war after war, there have been many that have been justified and many that have not. In recent times though, there is one war above all that raises the question of justification of war, the war on terrorism. On September 11, 2001 America was attacked by an Islamic terrorist organization, al-Qaeda. Since this terrible moment in history the United States has been locked-in in a war against terror. But the question many Americans ask themselves is whether or not this war is justified. Some say that war is never the right answer when it comes to defending your country but I say that, in fact, although war can be evil there

Geography's Effect on Global Warming

"Global warming is controversial, of course, but the controversy is mainly over whether human activity is driving it" (Kaku). What Michio Kaku is trying to say is that we are still not completely sure if global warming is completely a man made phenomenon. One thing that we do know is that the Earth is getting warmer as a whole and the recent theory that there would be a mini ice age in the early 2030's was disproven. An examination of many scientific studies will provide deeper insight into the effect that geography has on global warming. According to National Geographic, sea levels are expected to rise between 7 and 23 inches. This is due to temperatures rising 1 degree Fahrenheit (0.8 degree Celsius), and even more in sensitive polar regions. This may not seem like much, but if this temperature were to rise much more, the polar ice caps would start to m

The Global Warming Phenomenon

Global warming is the gradual increase in the earth's average temperature of the atmosphere, which in the long history of the earth has occurred naturally but within the last century or so humans have now started to heat up the globe through their activities. At first thought it seems outrageous to state such a claim. Humans, a one of millions of species increasing the temperature of the earth. But when displayed with the evidence it leaves the fictional and becomes a definite possibility. Our earth stays at a fairly stable temperature and allows us humans and the millions of other species that we share this planet with to live. This is because of a natural process known as the greenhouse effect. As Britannica School explains, "Glass walls of a greenhouse hold heat inside the building by trapping warmed air, preventing heat loss via convection. In contrast, greenhouse gases absorb radiation emitted from the Earth's surface and direct it back to Earth, preventing radiant heat loss&qu

Infancy and Early Childhood Development

Research on the brain and early childhood development indicates that the first four years of life are a period of particularly rapid development of brain structures and function. According to Larissa Scott (2004) the potential of the brain can be enhanced by presenting the right experiences at the right times, in the right amounts. In the initial stages of life, children's brains can be compared to a sponge soaking up liquids. As the newborn's five senses are stimulated the information gathered causes brain activity. This activity leads to the development of motor, emotional, behavioral, cognitive and social functioning. As the brain collects more information it begins to make connections between old and new knowledge, discarding information that does not sustain relevance to the environment. This sorting and learning process can be regarded as a function of the elimination of unnecessary associations and maintenance of those that are used. This places a great responsibility on p

Buddhist Rituals and Festivals

Buddhism is a religion and philosophy encompassing a variety of traditions, beliefs and practices, largely based on teachings attributed to Siddhartha Gautama commonly known as the Buddha "the awakened one". Concepts of Cognitive Development

Many people nowadays say that when specific events happen, whether it be tragic or a joyful memory, they make a huge difference in their own future. In fact, that is very much true. Ones childhood plays and will play a huge role in their further development. Jean Piaget, the swiss child psychologist, created the cognitive development theory. This new hypothesis had a focus on how children think and understand the world around them by using basic motor skills in the beginning to thinking abstract thoughts and making complex ,but in reach, conclusions. He creates and explores four age related stages that explain how children slowly begin to realize more of their surroundings. From the moment you enter this world you immediately become dependent on your basic motor skills to survive. The first stage of the cognitive development, sensorimotor stage, is mainly focused on how children use their sensory skills to understand the world. From infancy to the age of 2 a child forms object perma

The Winnipeg General Strike of 1919

After the First World War, the economy in Canada was very fragile1. Workers in both public and private jobs were frustrated with poor working conditions that they had faced. The Canadian public were angered due to inflation of 10 percent in 19192 in Canada. The unemployment rate had also skyrocketed, which meant that returning WW1 soldiers did not have any jobs to return to. The people of Winnipeg had had enough, so on May 15th of 1919, public and private workers worked together to reduce most services in the city. The city had no mail services, taxis, newspapers, restaurants, and retail stores. Surprisingly, even the police and firefighting forces had joined the strike3. For 6 weeks, the City of Winnipeg was crippled. But what really caused the Winnipeg General Strike of 1919? A wide variety of factors influenced workers to stand up to the government. The main factors included workers wanting better working conditions and wages, negotiations between management and unions not going exa

The Growing Problem of Overpopulation

Overpopulation is when a population cannot be maintained without the rapid depletion of resources or without the degradation of the capacity of the environment to give support to the population. This is a growing issue in our day and age due to many controllable factors; longer mortality rates, higher birth rates, and increase in agricultural productivity. At this rate of population growth, the earth will soon run out resources for us to use, resulting in the ultimate ending of the human race and the world as we know it. However, there are many precautions and decisions we can take to aid in the steady decline of the population. For this situation we need to identify the problem, find reasonable and reachable goals, and correct the problem before it is too late. In 1960, the mortality rate was about 30.1, today that number has reduced down to 5.96 per 1,000 ("Deaths and Mortality") because of medical advances and better awareness of health, we have also improved lifespans

Socrates and the Four Texts On Death

In life, there are many different stages showing the growth process of an individual. However, the two most important stages of life are the beginning of a newborn and death. Death is a common and controversial topic that has put quite a lot of people into anxiety. There are many reasons to the endless fear of death such as the feeling of not knowing what to expect when death comes, the dreadful and missing opportunity of not accomplishing goals in life, etc. Even though, death could be terrifying but if we look onto a brighter side, we would have seen that there are many considerable reasons why death shouldn't be that fearful after all. Should we be afraid of death is the most arguable and intriguing question, hence, there are plenty of people believe that humans should be scared of death, but a few would disagree with it whole-heartedly for numerous reasons. Death is considered to be unknown. Prior to the moment of a new beginning life, humans don't exactly know who we truly were

Analysis of A Modest Proposal

During the late seventeenth century, political pamphlets were distributed throughout Ireland to promote the ideas of various intellectuals and laymen. However, many discarded them and did not pay attention to them. Jonathan Swift, author of "A Modest Proposal," takes advantage of the overlooked pamphlets, and constructs a ridiculous proposal. He does this to illustrate how backwards and bad the state of Ireland is and the social classes. Swift proposes that the babies of all the poor and desolate will "contribute to the feeding, and partly to the clothing, of many thousands" to improve Ireland's economy and standard of living. He says this because many women kept having children but were unable to provide for them. He also states that his proposal would make the babies "beneficial to the public". Also, it is proposed because of Ireland's sincerely grim living standards. For these reasons, he looks at the politicians to blame for the poor conditions because of the apathy they p

Peter Pan by J.M. Barrie

Peter Pan written by J.M. Barrie argues the movement of childhood into adulthood in a fictional story about a young immortal boy who comes in the night to take children to a place called Neverland, where rules do not exist or parents reside. The story defines the idea of growing up and the struggles kids face trying to cope with imagination and dreams. Growing up seems fun when you are younger or in your teens. The idea of living by yourself and being on your own sounds so much better than living with parents who constantly tell you what to do and how to do it. But the story explains more than just having "freedom." It suggests the opposite, rather than explaining how fun it would be to become an adult, it explains how terrifying the reality of real life reveals itself. Life changes and so does a child's imagination as he or she grows older, all the things he/she may have wished for at a younger age are things that will soon be forgotten in the blink of an eye. Neverland being this imaginary place all kids dream of, a place where there are no rules and freedom to run around wherever they please grasps the imagination of a child. Showing how in de

Carefully Regulating Immigration

What created America was immigration, mostly consisting of Europeans in the beginning that wanted room for growth and success. Unfortunately, immigration has become overwhelming and un-controllable to the point America has become over populated with immigrants. Over the life span of immigration in America, jobs have been decreasing for U.S. citizens, with welfare and food stamps going to immigrants more than citizens, and with the lack of space due to over-population, there is no doubt there needs to be a tighter control for immigration. With borders being shut down, it has made in increase in the issues that need to be discussed and viewed among the American people. Mexico in specifically has been a big issue for illegal immigration. With Hispanics wanting the "American Dream," and to be able to have a chance for success is great; if done legally. Not only does it cause issues for us as a country, but it causes issues for the immigrants as well. In the recent years, jobs h

Kristallnacht - Night of Broken Glass

November 9-10, 1938, two days that will forever be engraved in the minds of the Jewish people who experienced it: Kristallnacht. When translated it means "Night of Crystal", and is often referred to as "Night of Broken Glass". It took over six months just to replace all of the broken glass from these two days. For many Jews, this was the start of a nightmare coming alive. Days before the 9th and 10th, German authorities were expelling thousands of Jews living in Poland. This is the start of what would trigger the start of a mass murder, and lead to the death of thousands. Herschel Grynszpan, who at the time was a 17 year old Polish Jew, had received news that his parents were among those being expelled. He wanted revenge on the people responsible for taking his parents away from him, so he shot the diplomatic official assigned to him. This man was Ernst vom Rath, who was an embassy officer of Germany (1"Kristallnacht: A nationwide pogrom, November 9-10, 1938" page 1 of 3). He died two days after the shooting, meaning he died on the ninth of November. This day was also the anniversary of the 1923 Beer Hall Putsch. During the celebrat

Methodology and Epistemology of the Healthcare Industry

The context of this article is the healthcare industry. The new healthcare reform, Affordable Care Act, requires that al healthcare organizations that receive reimbursements from the federal government require electronic medical documents. Currently, only approximately 17% of all medical records are electronic. (McVicker,2011, p.224) The implementation of the change from paper to electronic clinical documentation and the contracts between medical providers, software designers and IT consultants provide students with an authentic context where multiple parties are involved in a contractual relationship. (2011p.224) Students are put into teams to address possible issues of bread of contract, amend, or preserve the contract. This case study allowed the students to understand how contracts play a deciding role in the success of business partnerships. With the purpose of extending a business relationship students practice negotiation skills. These negation skills discussed performance claus
