The Stolen Party by Liliana HekerLiliana Heker's "The Stolen Party," is a short story about a Hispanic girl named Rosaura. The main idea of this story is to bring awarness to the social gap between the rich and the poor. The author tries to get the reader to see things through Rosaura's eyes, the eyes of a child. Heker shows this with the innocence and purity of childhood and the barriers of social classes in society. Rosaura is the main character in the "Stolen Party" and came from a poor family. One day she was invited to her rich study partner's birthday party and asked her mother if she could go. Rosaura's mother worked for the rich girls mom, Senora Ines. She didn't think it was a good idea for Rosaura to attend the party because of their social differences but her mom let her go anyway. Rosaura had a blast at the party; she won all the games and even got to see the magician's monkey ahead of time. She also helped out with the magician's tricks and served cake. She felt very special by the en |

Hernán Cortés' Uses of AlliesCortes could not have conquered the Aztecs as easily as he could have, without some form of help; specifically, his use of having allies on his side. None of Cortes' history of his conquest would have been fully understood had it not been for one of the men in Cortes' army who wrote it all down, and his name was Bernal Diaz Del Castillo. From the short novel called The Essential Diaz: Selections from The Conquest of New Spain by Bernal Diaz and translated by Janet Burke and Ted Humphrey, relives the troubles and the methodical thinking of Cortes's psyche through the memories and eyes of Bernal Diaz. From evading the oncoming Spaniards to fighting the Aztec army, Cortes' victory on conquering Tenochtitlan could have not been possible without his use of alliances. Some of the importance alliances that he made was with the Cingapacinga and the Cempola in chapter 6, the Tlacaltens, which was mainly chapter 7 and 8, to having Panfilo de Narvaez and Narvaez's army join Cortes on his journey |

Overview of Autism Spectrum DisordersAutism, or ASD (autism spectrum disorders), is an umbrella term for a group of brain development disorders. It is a highly variable neuro-developmental disorder (2) that is first apparent during infancy and continues to progress without remission throughout the life of the affected individual. ASD includes autistic disorder, or classic autism, Rett syndrome, Asperger syndrome and childhood disintegrative disorder. People with autism show signs of having difficulty with social interaction, verbal and nonverbal communication and they show repetitive behaviors. (1) Autism affects roughly one out of every eighty-eight children in the United States, and is four to five times more likely to affect boys than girls. It affects all races and ethnicities. Two million people in the United States are diagnosed with autism, and it affects tens of millions worldwide, with government autism statistics showing an increase in autism diagnoses worldwide, although there is no solid explanation for thi |

My Trip to New York CityPeople say, "If you can make it here, you can make it anywhere." The quote refers to life in New York City and how being successful in the city means you can succeed anywhere. Summer arrived and it was the opportune time to discover why the statement defines New York City. My family decided a trip to New York City would provide a new perspective given that it is different from where I live. I was up for the challenge, a new place to learn new things. It was an opportune moment to discover the city and discover why it is a challenge to live in the city. In just the immediate summer before my joining high school, my family and I embarked on a trip to a completely new world. Having come from a small town, I must confess that I had not been exposed to elements of such a large and diligent city as New York City. In fact, I won't be shy saying that my trip there was similar to discovering a new way of life that I only used to hear stories of. In the morning of the flight, I checke |

American and Chinese CulturesHave you ever wondered why most Americans keep a distance with people when they talk? Have you ever been surprised that Chinese people address senior citizens as "old lady" or "old man". Such incidents are a result of differences in culture norms. Americans value the personal space, while standing at a close distance in Chinese culture is a sign of friendship. Chinese people, out of respect, tend to use the word "old", whereas, Americans don't like to be called old. While today, different cultures gradually blending, there are still many differences between the U.S. and China, especially in that Americans are more individualistic and more informal than the Chinese. One significant difference between Chinese culture and American culture is that Americans value individualism more than the Chinese. For example, in China, parents raise their children when they are young, but once the children grow up |

Reflection: In the Red and Brown WaterOn 9th September, the theatre groups of grade 11 and 12 along with our respected teachers attended a play in Theatre Village called "In the Red and brown water" directed by Deborah Merola and written by Tarell Alvin. The outline of the play is that there are two stories underlying a single story. There is the part where the people are living in housing projects in the Louisiana bayou while the play also reveals a powerful spirituality, as the characters possess double identities as Yoruba Orihas (gods). There was a single moment that made me rethink and get the basic idea of the play. For me that was a Moment of emotion. This scene/moment was seen in the first act of the play. That exact moment when Mama Moja starts leaving the world (Oya) behind. There were emotions portrayed by all the characters present |

Religions of the Middle AgesThe church became dominant in Europe following the fall of the Roman Empire. The main religion that was recognized in Middle Ages was that of Christianity, specifically Catholicism. Christianity in the middle ages "dominated the lives of both peasants and the nobility"(Bornstein, p13). Religious institutors including the Church and the monasteries became wealthy and influential given the fact that the state allocated a significant budget (Medieval) for religious activities. The Roman Catholic Church was the ultimate control during the middle Ages and it was the stabilizing force in everyday life which kept the community structure together. The laws and "rules of the land, public policies and governance of the people were all affected by religion" (Arnold, p67) during the Middle Ages. Any attempt at threatening Christianity by other religions was met with force and all measures were taken to spread the religion in other parts of the world. During the middle ages fes |

Voluntary High School Military Training in ThailandNo matter how large or little a country is, national defense strategies are always taken as a matter of consequence. They are always put in the top orders of priority when it comes to administrating a country. The national defense strategies are seen and operated differently varying from country to country. For Thailand, there are certain sets of modus operandi for the defense strategies which are rather unique to other countries' at the policy level and the voluntary high school military training is one of them. Yet, it has been widely debated in the nation on the advantages and the necessity of this training. Some people even propose abolishing it by assuming it does no more good to the country. After all, it is of benefit to maintain the voluntary high school military training in Thailand if we deliberate over it carefully. The most common reason claimed by many people including some officials in the armed forces who think the voluntary high school military training should be term |

Billie Holiday - The Voice of JazzOne of the greatest Jazz singers of all time, Billie Holiday, born Eleanora Harris on April 7, 1915. Her mother Sadie was an eighteen-year old cleaner and her father Clarence Holiday was a sixteen-year old guitarist. Her parents were not married nor did they live together and Billie's yearn for independence allowed her to quickly learn how to defend and protect herself from the dangerous streets of Baltimore, Maryland. Billie was very rough around the edges and wasn't afraid of anyone nor did she tolerate disrespect from anyone she came across. At the age of 11, Billie was raped by her neighbor one evening and although she he was sentenced to three months in prison, Billie the victim of this horrific crime, was also punished and sent to "The House of Good Shepherd for Colored Girls". But her street smart ways as well as her fiery no nonsense attitude was viewed negatively by the nuns . She even claimed that the nuns at the school forced her to sleep next to the body of young girl who h |

Why Are We Still Worried About Gay Marriage? There's an ongoing controversy surrounding gay marriage, but everyone should have the right to marry whomever they please, as long as they are of age, mentally capable, and can give consent. When we see Maslow's Hierarchy of needs, somewhere on his list to reach "self actualization" we have to hit the "love" level. How do we expect any gay person to reach self-actualization if we stunt them before the level of love? When arguments arise on the gay marriage subject, usually the first person to speak out against gay marriage is a Christian or some other religious person. They claim that it is against God's will and that it isn't supported by religion. I thought we lived in America, where we were free from religious slavery. Of course it is against that God, but that God also says "Judge not, and ye shall not be judged. Condemn not, and ye shall not be condemned. Forgive, and ye shall be forgiven" and banning gay marriage is judgmental. What would Jesus do? |

Fundamentals of Project Management1. Introduction Project management is needed for any businesses to organize work efficiently and gain profit in a way that minimize risk cost. The end result of project management is to solve the company's problem and make changes to improve former way of running business. According to Roberts (2007, 11), project management can be summed up as answering these questions:"Who needs to be involved in managing a project?, What must a project deliver?, When must it deliver?, How much must be invested?, Why is this project necessary?". Further it should be consider to ask how well did the project go? If you can make sure each of these questions has a thorough solution, the project plan will have a proper implementation. 2.1 Definition of project management First, we have the definition of a project is "a piece of planned work or an activity which is finished over a period of time and intended to achieve a particular aim" (Cambridge Advanced dictionary). So what is proje |

Football - Diving and Faking on the FieldAnyone who's watched a professional football match cannot help but notice it. Players will suddenly fall to the ground in agony, screaming and rolling around. Then, incredibly, they jump up and start playing again as if nothing had happened. They are not really hurt –they are faking! They call it "diving" and it's become a plague in today's football. In fact, a recent study of 32 World Cup matches found 293 incidents of suspected diving. Football has incredibly changed in recent years. Footballers were athletes, they played with pride. Now they become famous for other reasons, for instance the fashion, and this fact causes that football teams and their components very often are burning issues just because they want to attract atte |

Minors and the Minimum WageMinors, under the age of 18 should make minimum wage. If minimum wage were to increase, since most states are, it would be unfair if they were to receive different pay when they do the same job. Minimum wage should not just apply to minors, it should apply to anyone who are working in the minimum wage job area. If it just applied to minors, then it would be unfair. Minimum wage should not have to be based upon the age, it should be based on the job, and how skilled they are in doing the job. Minors should make minimum wage because then everyone will be equal, and they could have an experience as an adult at an early age especially having to juggle school, and work, and other responsibilities. The minor should get equal pay especially if they are doing the exact same job as the adult. From experience, I have worked as a dentist assistant and front desk at the office in the dental industry. I worked and was paid higher than minimum wage due to the job I had to do, and because it was my |

Water, Dams and the Mekok RiverWater is an essential element of life, but has become a very scarce resource especially in the past hundred years, due to human activity. The Mekong River is no exception to this due to the high levels of water pollution, unsustainable use, and wasteful use. The Mekong River, also known as the "Mother of Water," is the longest river in Southeast Asia, with a length of 2700 miles, that flows through several countries.1 The river's mostly collects water from rainfall, and is the largest fresh water fishery in the world.2 Not only is The Mekong River a resource, but a way of life and tradition for people that live around and use the river. The water from the Mekong is vital for agricultural production that it provides jobs for 9/10 people in the Lower Mekong Basin and provides the staple diet of 100 million people.3 Even rice cultivation is not possible without irrigation during dry periods.4 With the Mekong River being such a vital resource for millions of people, it has begun |

Research Paper - Cloud ComputingAlthough cloud computing was first introduced in the 1950s, it's importance of storing digital files online and providing access to it everywhere has become particularly evident over the last decade. Cloud computing can provide access to many daily life services, such as banking, education and business through the use of mobile phones. Cloud computing solves many daily problems and makes sharing any type of data much easier. Cloud computing shares data through the Internet, which makes it easier for anyone to have access to data. Although cloud computing has many advantages, there are also many disadvantages. Many businesses use cloud computing to get access to various types of data that would benefit them in making their business better and generate maximum profit. The idea of cloud computing was first introduced in 1950, when the mainframe computing was first created (Kenneth, 2012). Its purpose was to allow multiple users have access to mainframe. The Defense of Marriage ActThe Defense of Marriage Act became effective on September 21st, 1996, when the president at the time, Bill Clinton, signed the law. This act defines marriage as the legal union of one man and one woman for federal and inter-state recognition purposes in the United States. The law basically states that no U.S state or political subdivision is required to recognize a same sex marriage from another state. It also states that the federal government does not have to recognize a same sex marriage that is recognized by a state. This means they do not have to recognize any insurance benefits for government employees, social security survivor benefits, and the filing of joint tax returns. I do not think that the Defense of Marriage Act should be in existence for multiple reasons. This act conserves the unequal treatment of homosexuals by not allowing them to marry. It is immoral to say that heterosexuals still have the right to get married but homosexuals cannot. Judge Joseph Tauro states it |

My Sister AlejandraDuring the first 14 years of my life, my younger sister, Alejandra, was my best friend - she was only three years younger than me. But everything began to change when she was 11 years old she began to be very distant and our friendship deteriorated. When I was eighteen, in March 2006, my father left the house, leaving my mother alone with my sister and me. At this time was very important that our family was united to help each other to overcome these difficult times that would come. It was no coincidence that immediately after my father left home, Alejandra presented an eating disorder. At first his disorder started when she was diagnosed with gastritis, in April 2006. With this disease she need to watch her diet, avoiding foods that irritated her the stomach, but that was not all, sometimes took away the appetite, gave her nausea and vomiting. My mother and I knew his condition, my sister was going to lose weight, but after three or four months, she had lost fifty-five pounds. Then, we realized that this was not the result of his illness - must have been something else. My sister was always only a little bigger than |

Over-Harvesting and the Extinction of Medicinal PlantsHave you ever wondered where your medicine comes from? In today's medicine, about fifty to sixty percent of pharmaceutical drugs "are either of natural origin or obtained through use of natural products" (Government of Canada). For centuries, people have depended on these natural resources drawn from medicinal plants to alleviate pain and fight infections. Medicinal plants continue to aid in the discoveries of medicines utilized to cure the deadliest diseases such as heart disease and cancer. In order to meet the populations increasing demand for medicine, the act of over-harvesting transpires. Over-harvesting is the act of gathering plants in an abrupt matter, degrading its ability for the plant to re-flourish. It is endangering medicinal plants and rapidly leading them into extinction. Over-harvesting influenced by over-demanding needs, greed, and ignorance is leading to extinction of medicinal plants, limiting the opportunity for medical discoveries to cure the world's deadlie |

After Apple Picking by Robert FrostAs part of the life cycle, human beings pass throughout different situations and moments of introspection. "After Apple-Picking" by Robert Frost, is an example of insight observation and life examination. The narrator directs the reader to be interested and sympathized with his own feelings. The poem clearly gives the idea of human introspection and thinking about life, which is something people do most of the time. At the end of the day, we are all by ourselves with our feelings. "After Apple-Picking" is an amazing poem that makes me think about the narrator feelings. In this case, apples come to be a main tool to describe the thoughts of the narrator, his feelings, and some other things he did or did not do on life. At the beginning |

Elements of Fiction in Gulliver's TravelsThe elements of fictional writing are well thought out and artistically placed together by the author to weave a good story. An important element of every fictional story is its theme. The theme in a story is its underlying message, or 'big idea.' One of the more prominent themes thriving within Gulliver's Travels is that of power. Power is a recurring theme throughout the novel. It presents itself through the governing style on the first island of Lilliput. The island is ruled by an Emperor with ultimate power among the Lilliputians. He has a palace, servants, and the power to appoint men for war. Gulliver shows his loyalty to the Emperor when he narrates, "I desired the Secretary to present my humble duty to the Emperor, and to let him know, that I thought it would not become me, who was a foreigner, to interfere with parties; but I was ready, with the hazard of my life, to defend his person and state against all invaders" (86; ch. 8; book 1). Power is secondly recognized on B |

A Look at Medical TourismThere are so may different opinions on the term medical tourism. Although it is a relatively new term, most people do not even know what it means. Medical tourism is when one travels to another country to get medical assistance they can not receive in their own country. I personally did not know what the term was until about a week ago when we learned it in class. After listening in class and doing some research I have decided that I agree with this method of medical assistance and would use it if I had to. There are many reasons to agree with this method of medical treatment. The first and most important reason is it is these peoples lives and they should be able to do what they want with their bodies. I also think this may not be morally correct, but the people coming from other countries are giving these people an opportunity of their life time. They are going to make more money in one day for giving away an organ than they would make in ten years of working or more, depending on the organ and the buyer. Also the buyers need an organ just as much as the people |

The Psychology of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)One of the unifying threads woven through the articles is the inextricable relationship between self and other, which incites interest into the world of autism. As Bargh and Chartrand (1999) discuss, nonconscious mental processing assumes a primary and adaptive role in self-regulation beyond that of conscious, intentional control. While the automatic link between perception and behavior may aid in detection and evaluation of nonverbal social cues, what is the nature of this link in individuals with autism spectrum disorders (ASD)? Extant research suggests autism is associated with a disrupted mirror neuron system vital in development of theory of mind and empathy. In typically developing individuals, mirror neurons underlie imitation and facilitate translating another's behavior into an understanding of his/her intentions. As Bargh and Chartrand (1999) note, nonconscious mimicry "has the positive function of facilitating social interactions and increasing liking between peopl |

Rembrandt Harmenszoon van RijnPeople consider the Dutch painter and etcher, Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn, an important figure in Dutch history. He achieved success at a very early age but had personal tragedies and financial hardships in his later years. Many are familiar with Rembrandt's reputation. Rembrandt's works show his greatest accomplishments. Mainly his childhood and home life influenced his works. Steadfastly, Rembrandt van Rijn, the greatest Dutch portrait painter of all time, revealed his brilliance by creating realistic masterpieces of poor, working-class subjects, and the ones he loved and lost. Life Rembrandt van Rijn was born in Leiden, Netherlands on July 15, 1606. A. Pierre Bourdieu: Existentialism and StructuralismA. Pierre Bourdieu (1930-2002) was a French sociologist who initially started out as a philosopher. He was one of the last modern theorists whose work was path breaking. Hailing from Algeria, his work was somehow closely related to his place of origin. Bourdieu pioneered investigative frameworks and terminologies such as cultural, social, and symbolic capital, the role of practice, and the concepts of habitus, field or location, and symbolic violence to reveal the dynamics of power relations in social life. Bourdieu's methodological concerns centered on the debate between structure and agency – whether as agents we have any freedom or are we bound by structures? He questioned the basis on which sociology practiced itself i.e. objectivity. His main aim was to go beyond the dichotomy of objectivism and subjectivism. While questioning how social facts as "things" came into being, Bourdieu says that they come into being through practices of the agents themselves. The issue |

Prejudice and HomosexualityLesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender rights in the United States have evolved over time and vary greatly on a state-by-state basis and many are making strides to reverse laws on homosexual couples. However, homosexuality is still viewed in our culture to be a disease rather than a personality trait. That something must be wrong with a person to feel such a way. Richard D. Mohr combats these critics of homosexual behavior in "Prejudice and Homosexuality". Mohr gives facts, defends arguments, and describes what a life free of prejudice would look like. Mohr begins his article by giving many facts associated with homosexuality. For instance, in 1993 the New York Times-CBS Poll found that only one-fifth of Americans suppose they have a friend or family member who is gay or lesbian. This is a surprisingly low number since there are so many practicing homosexuals in America. Mohr also gives details of a study conducted by Alfred Kinsey who studied the sex lives of 12,000 w |
