History of the Boston Massacre

Since 1765, the citizens of Boston have been protesting against British taxation. The civilians believed that the British were invalid to tax them because the citizens didn't nominate their representatives in the Parliament. They believed that the Massachusetts Assembly alone had the right to tariff taxes on its citizens. Then the citizens began going against the Stamp Act. The Stamp Act was the new tax that was forced upon the American citizens. The Stamp Act required citizens to be taxed on every piece of printed paper they used. This tax was also included on ship's papers, legal documents, newspapers, license, other publications, and even playing cards. After the that, in 1767, the citizens began going against the Townshend Acts. In 1768, a group of British troops arrived in Boston to sustain order. The citizens of Boston felt like they were being invaded by the British. The civilians of Boston had attained control of the reigns of power and stopped the soldiers from carrying out th

The High Demand and Low Supply of Diamonds

In William A. McEachern's Contemporary Economics, demand is defined as a relation showing the quantities of a good that consumers are willing and able to buy at various prices per period (Page 100). On the other hand, supply is defined as a relation showing the quantities of a good producers are willing and able to sell at various prices during a given period (Page 130). The equilibrium price is reached when the quantity consumers are willing and able to buy matches the quantity producers are willing and able to sell (Page 162). Substitutes are products that can be used in place of each other (Page 118). While elasticity is another word for the responsiveness of a product (Page 108), a product that is insensitive to changes in price or income is considered inelastic (Page 109). Normal goods make up most goods and increase in demand as income increases (Page 117). Diamonds are considered a normal good sinc

Chronicle of a Death Foretold

In the novel Chronicle of a Death Foretold, the author, Gabriel Garcia Marquez exemplifies a sympathetic mood towards Santiago by portraying him as a Christ like figure, however, he writes about the town having a negative viewpoint associated with him, helping to question the murder and whether he was wrongfully killed. By doing this, it causes the reader to delve deeper into the murder, and also into the Colombian honor code and whether or not they agree or disagree with it. The combination of the Christ like symbol in Santiago and the mood he exemplifies allows the reader to question Colombian society and sympathize with Santiago. This tying together the idea of magical realism and it's role within the novel. In the beginning of the novel, Santiago is portrayed as an antagonist by multiple characters along with his actions. First, is the incident with Divina Flor, where Santiago molests Divina and uses the strong phrase (pg. 9)"The time has come for you to be tamed". This

The Rules of Volleyball

Volleyball is a team game which has six players that play on either side of the net. The game begins with a player from one of the team's throwing the ball using their hand or arm over the net so that the opposite team can receive it on their side. The goal is to prevent the ball from hitting the ground. Your team is not aloud to hit the ball more than three times in a row. A foul happens if one person from any team touches the ball more than twice aka a double hit. Also, a team scores a point by throwing the ball across the net to the other team's side and it hits the ground directly or the player fails to hit it back over the net. There are basically two ways to score a point one of the way is by throwing the ball on the ground of the opponent team passing over the net another way is if the opponent team is unable to hit the ball back over the net. Some of the different rules for volleyball one rule is that the ball has to be served underhand or overhand. Another rule is that t

Engineering Project - Saving Water

Water is an essential and basic need of every living thing on our planet. The conservation of this resource is thus paramount to make sure that it sustains life. Bathing is among the activities that wastes a lot of water; there is no means of determining the exact amount of water that is adequate. Additionally, the heating systems of the water in many households are located far from the faucets. For this reason, it takes time for the water to heat up, and thus some water goes to waste while waiting for it to get warm. The challenge can be solved by installing the heating device directly on the taps or heating the water supplying pipes so that as the water passes through it gets warm. The installation of water heaters in the taps could significantly reduce the time the water takes to warm. The process can be done by hav

Mandela's Way: Lessons on Life, Love, and Courage

The book, "Mandela's Way: Lessons on Life, Love, and Courage", by Richard Stengel seeks to address how Nelson Mandela has shown courage throughout his life and how he has become the man that he is today through his journey along with the people who have influenced him and the people who he has influenced. This book is illustrated in the eyes of Richard Stengel during his time in South Africa with Nelson Mandela. Richard Stengel's comparison between Nelson Mandela and Barack Obama is exemplary. Richard Stengel describes Barack Obama as the 21st century Nelson Mandela (Stengel 19). For the most part, I can agree with that statement. Their characteristics are fairly similar in the fact that they both show empathy towards strangers and are willing to shake hands with everybody alon

My Bad Cousins

There was no worse news, at the advanced age of 7, than to have one of my sisters confide to me that we were going to visit the "bad cousins." Visiting the "good cousins" was an entirely different matter. My father's side of the family was far more enjoyable to visit than the raucous band of Portuguese dairy farmers my mother claimed we were related to. Although I thoroughly enjoyed the peaceful afternoons spent with the families of my aunts and uncles on the Clark side of the family, a consortium of investors, professors, and teachers, when my family made the three hour trip to the small vineyard and dairy just outside of Kingsburg, California, I would complain the whole way, protesting having to visit with such uncivilized cousins. Since my first encounters with the bad cousins I was taken aback by their peculiar habits of play. At any moment they were prone to wrestling amongst themselves and roping various far

American Immigration in the 1970s and 1980s

By the year 1965, the US operated on a quota immigration system that was based on national origin. This was to change though, when in the year 1965, a new Immigration and Naturalization act abolished the former Hart-celler Act. The new act focused on attracting skilled labor to the US and reuniting immigrant families. Unlike in the past years when immigrants coming to the US mostly came from Europe, the new act caused a tremendous change of the American population. One would note easily that immigrants started streaming in from Asia, Latin America and later from Africa. Immediately after passing the bill, an impact that was not expected at first ripple the country. After the first five years after the bill was established, that is, the beginning of 1970s, immigration from Asian countries quadrupled. This were mainly people fleeing from war-torn Asian countries

Sunny & 79 in Miami by Brian James

The story "Sunny & 79 in Miami" by Brian James is a short story dealing with a lot of dialogue with pauses and breaks between a young man and young lady. The narrator seems to have a crush on the young lady. The narrator tells the story in both the present and the future. Pacing back and forth helps the reader understand what kind of relationship were reading from the story. The two characters which are nameless seem to have or have had a friendship and are trying to rebuild what they had, but at the end seem to have found what they both are looking for. In the short story the characters are very aware of what to speak off or mention to the other person. In the story they use a lot of pauses/breaks so the reader understands that they are holding some topics to themselves. Which means they obviously have more to say. In the short story it states, "We're disconnected: because of you, because of me, because of ourselves, because of the fiber wires coming down after thirty-six hours of snow" (pg.2). This explains that they indeed have some type of relationship because they talk on the phone for h

Effects of Non-Verbal Communication

The definition of non-verbal communication is, "Communication without the use of spoken language." Nonverbal communication includes gestures, facial expressions, and body positions (also known as "body language"), as well as unspoken understandings or some assumptions, and cultural conditions that may affect any encounter between people. People in the 20th century, and more frequently are starting to socialize and advertise online and on social media like Facebook. This is a form of nonverbal communication because it is not face-to-face and people can assume anything from the way something is phrased. Often offending people of other cultures, unknowingly, communicating through technology is not as effective as it should be between relationships, such as teachers, colleagues, friends, and family. Text messaging is not as effective as dialing a number and hearing a voice, full of emotion and life. Communication is key to any relationship and you have to communicate e

Mesopotamian and Hebrew Creation Myths

Historians use Primary Sources to study the past. Creation myths explain a particular culture's belief in how the Earth and life came to be (Sources, 1). The document "A Mesopotamian Creation Myth: The Battle Between Marduk and Tiamat" portrays Mesopotamian belief of how the Earth was created, whereas the document "The Hebrews Explain Creation: Book of Genesis" gives an explanation of how the Hebrews believe the Earth was created. Based on the primary sources, these two cultures have both similarities and differences in their beliefs. Mesopotamians believed that Gods and Goddesses ruled the world. These Gods and Goddesses represented some type of nature, such as the sun or the seas (McKay, 14). In the document "A Mesopotamian Creation Myth", the writer proves this by explaining how Marduk, the sun-god and ruler of Babylon, and Tiamat, the sea-goddess, get into a fight that results in a battle. The Babylonians came to take over other cities of the Euphra

The Positive Consequences of Drinking Coffee

Coffee has long been introduced to mankind as a beverage and has then become popular among people of all walks of life throughout the world. People consume coffee for some purposes varying from person to person. People's coffee drinking fashions are individually shaped by what they think about its importance and application. They may drink it every day as their energy booster or occasionally as one of their thirst slakers. Both positive and negative effects of drinking coffee have been identified in connection with the caffeine content held in it, yet the positive ones are more likely to be taken into account for the purpose of advantages. Further, drinking optimal doses of coffee results in three positive consequences involving weight loss, stress reduction, and mental benefits. Playing an important role as an assistant to weight loss is perceived to be the first consequence of drinking coffee. According to Dr. Len Kravitz of the University of New Mexico, it has been revealed that

Cultural Policies and History of Italy

Cultural Policy and History of Italy Italy is, for lack of a better word, a rather young state with it's origin in the year 1860. The first laws that were past by the state were in the years of 1908 and 1909 and they had to due with the culture of the country as a whole. Since the country is known very much for it's history originating in its own culture, those were the first laws that were past. They guarded the history of the country and its artistic assets located within the region (and rightly so). The maintenance of these historic landmarks and areas was considered to be on the forefront of the agenda regarding cultural policies. The past is something that Italy prides itself on. It is something that they hold dear to their hearts and so does the rest of the world, in more ways than one. Their heritage and tradition has always been the most important part of how they take pride in their country. During the early 20th century, under fascist rule was when Italy put in place a

What it Means to Be and American

In order to decipher what it means to be an American you have to look at the past and what has brought this freedom upon us. George Washington once said "The basis of our political system is the right of the people to make and to alter their constitution of government." Up until 1776 when the War ended, none of this was possible. Great Britain was making the laws and making decisions about what the people of the thirteen colonies could or couldn't do. The first amendment of the Constitution prohibits Congress from taking away one's right of speech, press, petition, as well as religion, which is a valuable part of being an American. Having this freedom available to us could very well have saved other countries many wars if they would have let the citizens choose their own religion and not discriminate against it. Wars like the Crusades between the Christians and the Muslims, which started in 1095 and led to 1096, also continued from 1097- 1127, was fought over the control o

Censorship and the Theater

For as long as an established government is being run and artists are putting out good, thought-provoking work, there has always been a backlash due to a clashing of opinions amongst both the government and the people. One of the more beautiful things about the human mind is that we are able to make decisions and form opinions on certain issues and things we experience everyday and things we encounter with others or by ourselves. In doing so, we subject ourselves to the work of others and everything they have to offer us. With these experiences come our opinions and our stances on certain issues. These opinions often clash with the opinions of others and that is when true conflict arises and, hopefully, a useful and beneficial outcome. Over the course of the 20th and so far in the 21st century, there have been a number of contentions about theater and its reputation in the public eye. Theater is a form of art that is unparalleled and cannot be compared to any other art form. It challe

Psychotic Disorder - Schizophrenia

One of the many psychotic disorders is schizophrenia which is also a thought disorder. This disorder mostly affects people aged 15 to 45, but can also affect other ages too. Only 1 percent of the population will be diagnosed with schizophrenia. There are two kinds of schizophrenia, process and reactive schizophrenia. Process schizophrenia is biological, slow to impact a patient with a gradual increase in the symptoms and has them his whole life. Reactive schizophrenia happens to a supposedly healthy person suddenly overnight. This paper will show that those with schizophrenia have several various symptoms, with many causal factors and there are several types of therapies to help people suffering from schizophrenia. The clinical presentation of schizophrenia differs from one individual to another. Examples of some symptoms of patients are that they can act withdrawn, suspicious, paranoid, and have hallucinations. There are many symptoms that make up the clinical picture of schizophren

Wedding Rites and Catholic Marriage

God intended people to come together to find a loving partner, who will help, love, and cherish one another. "It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him." This is man and woman being made to love each other. Marriage is a sacrament, which means that the wed couple receive God's love and grace within their relationship. Knowing that the marriage contains God, it helps them to reflect God's love, and to love each other like God loves us. Marriage is to be permanent, life giving, a sacrament, exclusive, public, and also has to reflect selfless love in the views of Catholics. The vows in the marriage reflect that it is a sacrament; this is because you are making an oath to your partner in front of God. "For better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish," These vows help to reflect on how to live your marriage, and shows that they'd show agape (selfless love). Which reflects "wives s

Italian Food and Culture

For my country/culture my group and myself were given Italy to present to the class. At first I believed that all Italy was known for was its wonderful pastas and the Colosseum built by the Roman empire but as I started to research this country I soon realized that Italy is known for much more than just those two things. Italy is a very diverse country in terms of food and even in their culture. The country has been around for centuries and as result it has gone through numerous changes in rulers, food, and culture. Throughout Italy's long history it has gone through essentially 3 times periods in regards to food and culture; the Ancient times, Imperial Rome, and the New World/Renaissance. The ancient times were important in Italy's culture because that is when the first civilization settled in Italy, this group of people was called the Etruscans. The Etruscans took control of Rome from another group called the Latins and formally set up thei

John Cheever - Reunion

Marriage can be the best thing that has ever happened for some people but for others it could be an altercation. For some of those altercations end up in a divorce with a kid that now only has one parent or two lives. John Cheever's "Reunion" takes place in Grand Central Station, New York where the main character, which is also the narrator, is to meet his father. Little is said about the father before the story begins only that the main character hasn't seen him in three years. The main character, Charlie, is happy to see his dad again but when he wrote to his father that he wanted to get some lunch his father's secretary was the one to respond not the father. This could mean that he is a busy man but couldn't make time for his son? Further into the story we find out that it's not that he didn't have enough time, it that he was probably not sober enough to write. Charlie was glad to see his father meaning that in the past when his parents were still together they probably

The On-Going Abortion Debate

The on-going debate of abortion has been an issue since the 1960's, which intertwined with the women's right movement. It's a continuous struggle regarding the morals, beliefs, and opinions of both men and women. The controversy has divided people into two categories: pro-life, and pro-choice. The pro-life argument opposes abortion, infanticide, euthanasia, and embryo destructive research. They believe that one shouldn't take the life of another human being before it is born no matter the circumstance. However, in contrast the pro-choice argument explains that they are not pro-abortion and taking the life of other, but rather support the decision of the mother. They defend that women should have the right to decide for themselves. The debate is a combination regarding nature and preborn, women's rights, government involvement, and quality of life. Each side of th

A Beautiful Discovery

I was 11-years-old the first time I saw my brother's new electric guitar. It was black, white, silver, and brown. I vividly remember the amplifier, especially the bright blue light that lit up when it was on. Just the sight of the guitar against the amp was something that could light up a whole room. I thought about all of my favorite bands and how those bands were using the exact same instrument as this. There was so much opportunity for greatness in those strings and on those frets; I was in awe. I had so much respect for the guitar and its ability to grab so many people's attention. I knew that I would become a master of this instrument. Although he told me not to touch it, I couldn't resist, especially because my brother Dave is very laid back. I knew he wouldn't mind too much. There was a time when I stole all of the candy out of his room. I was so worried that he would freak out but he laughed it off. So I assumed that when he said not to touch it, he just

Female Rape Victims in the Old South

In the late 1890's and early 1900's, a prominent double standard came about that affected hundreds of women in the south. Many whites at the time felt the need to reinstate white supremacy in their communities, and so the tactics of rape and the rape lynching narrative became most common. White men used white women to justify the frequent lynchings occurring in the south, portraying white women as victims of assault and those in need of protection. However, African American women who fell victim to rape did not receive the same protection and defense- leading to the double standard concerning how white women and black women were treated as rape victims. In the early 1900's, a woman's race and social standing determined her experience as a victim of rape in the south. White women living in the south during the early 1900's had multiple privileges and advantages. One made especially clear in the documents from this time period was how a white woman who was a victim of rape was treated

Compare and Contrast - MLK and Julius Caesar

Martin Luther King Jr. was a leader in the African American Civil Right Movement. He is best known for his role in the advancement of civil rights using nonviolent civil disobedience based on his Christian beliefs. He organized many protests against the unfair treatment of African American during the 1960s. Julius Caesar was the greatest ruler of the Roman Empire who overthrew the republic and crowned himself emperor. He founded the empire by destroying the vikings and making them his slaves. As leaders, they were both well supported, which reveals that people support leaders who help them support their own human rights. People support leaders who brings them equality. As the author writes, "a Nobel Peace Prize-winner is dead in an assassination" (Breslin). Martin Luther King won the Nobel Peace Prize because he organized many non-violence protests to fight for people's equalities, which made them believe that he is a great leader. Julius Caesar also gained supports from people who retrieved equalities with his help. As Shakespeare writes, "He heath brought many captives home to Rome. Whose ransoms did the general coffers fill?"

The Development of Chinese Cuisine

As the ancient Chinese proverb goes, "The masses regard sufficient food as their heaven.", food is one of the most important necessities for the Chinese people in their lives. Chinese are innovative, they created all kinds of cuisine in different ages through their ardent love for cooking. However, how could people bake biscuits in the 16th century without the invention of electronics? How could they make ice cream before the presence of refrigerators? From dynastic period to the present, Chinese cooking technology had developed over time. During the time of the old dynasties, Chinese cooking technology was inefficient but elaborate. In the monarchical government system, most Chinese people tried various ways to ingratiate the emperor in order to get the reward or to earn favor. Jia Qing-ling, who is a history professor in Qing-hua University, lists the dishes that Song emperor was served during the Spring Festival. "The bear's-paw was braised just right, matsutake[a ki

Short Story - Journey on the Road

The discordant symphony of battle cries between low-riding beasts-honking and screeching-faded into a dull lull in the back of my consciousness as the car peeled away from the towering metal creatures and its prowling counterparts with glaring white orbs and incessant growls-a peculiar lullaby which dragged the curtains lower over my eyes. The further I traversed away from the heart of the war, the shorter those metallic creatures became. What amazed me was the existence of other types of said creatures. There were some whose scales were translucent to the point where its dinner, poor human victims could be seen in its digestive tract. Rubber tires softly embraced unpaved road as the flaring lights transcended into glistening twinkles, a mirror of the skies above. Wistfully, I stared out of the many mouths of my ride with half-lidded olive orbs, the glistening specks of diamonds greeting me with flirty winks. God's blanket-fabric that was an unfathomable deep blue with intricate patte
