Analysis of The Sun and I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud

Of the two poems that were analyzed, one was called "The Sun" by Mary Oliver. In this poem there are poetic elements such as repetition, imagery and simile that helps set the mood of the poem and make the reader more involved in the poetry. Using repetition has helped to emphasize certain points and draw the reader into the poem. There was one specific phrase in this poem that was repeated and it was "have you." This phrase helped the reader connect to the poem and think about their own experiences and their own reflection on nature (in this case The Sun). When the poem stated, "have you ever felt for anything with such love..." It is a good example of engaging the reader into the poem and getting them to think and feel. Imagery is another poetic element that had a huge impact on this poem and getting the reader to imagine and feel like they were present there. An example of imagery in this poem is the following "for the pleasure that fills you, as the sun reaches out, as it warms you as you stand there" This is a really good example of imagery because the reader is able to feel as i

Phineas and Gene in A Separate Peace

Tad Williams, a science fiction writer who has written many books such as the series Shadowmark, once said, "We tell lies when we are afraid... afraid of what we don't know, afraid of what others will think, afraid of what will be found out about us. But every time we tell a lie, the thing that we fear grows stronger." This quote deals with some of the deeper themes in the novel A Separate Peace. The book is set in the 1940's at a private school in The United States of America. The protagonist Gene and his friend Phineas take on the difficult journey through lies and fear of the truth that ultimately change their lives forever and show them who they really are. Phineas and Gene, although very different people, are great friends at their private school. Gene is an extremely introverted person who is into academics more than athletics, while Phineas is an outgoing athlete who is very social and caring. During the novel the boys create a club called the "Sup

Communism: A Failed Plan

Have you noticed that communism, a political system created in the 1840's by Karl Marx, has started to die down? It used to be a global political system, but now it remains in evident in only 5 countries. Or does it? Some of these 5 countries are in terrible economic states. Poverty is through the roof, and some of them are among the poorest countries in the world. However, all of these countries share something in common. On the outside, they all say they are communist, and fight for equality, but at the roots of it all, they are all capitalist. They have capitalistic values embedded in their government and economies, making them capitalist, like the rest of the world. These 5 countries are China, North Korea, Laos, Vietnam and Cuba. In this essay, you will come to agree that these five countries are all capitalist at heart, and that they should change their government over to non-communist governments, as communism clearly isn't working, and non-communist governments could greatl

Issue Analysis of Legalizing Immunizations

On April 16, 1850, many people were relieved to know that the polio vaccination became required in all US schools. At this time, doctors and medical researchers did not think that now requiring one vaccine would create such a ripple affect, as well as so much controversy. Now, in the twenty- first century, vaccinations are one of the medical fields strongest defenders of health and have created the ability for the body to become immune to viruses and diseases that have been known to kill hundreds of thousands of diseases such as polio, smallpox, hepatitis, H1N1, the flu, and many more. Now that vaccines have become such a crucial part of the research process for physicians, this has also raised controversy that based on the medical evidence of success, should vaccines take the next step of becoming a legal process enforced on citizens? In 2014, the battle has begun in the states between those, who wish to force citizens to use every federally recommended vaccine and those, who respect

Medical School Personal Statement

According to the Dalai Lama, "Practicing compassion not only makes others happy, but it also makes you happy." I have experienced the truth of this statement firsthand through my experiences as a volunteer at Ochsner Medical Center, a prominent hospital located in my hometown of New Orleans. Having volunteered in the patient escort department since my junior year of high school, I have had a wealth of opportunities to interact with and positively impact the lives of hospital patients. When I first started volunteering at Ochsner, I did it simply because it would "look good" on my college application. What better way than to volunteer at a hospital? When I chose to volunteer, I knew I wouldn't want to do a job that required me to do what I considered "busy work," such as answering phone calls, filing packets, or

America Should Reconsider the Drinking Age

We can purchase a gun, we can buy tobacco, and we can serve and risk our life protecting our country, there's absolutely no reason why we shouldn't be allowed to enjoy a drink once in a while. Alcohol has become a huge part of our global culture and social life; therefore, it's obvious that their should be restrictions. But setting the minimum legal drinking age of 21 has not improved our society nor has it been proven to be very effective counteracting young adults from getting their hands on alcohol. According to Dictionary.com the definition of an adult is: a person who has attained the age of maturity as specified by law. If we're considered adults at the age of 18, we should be expected to be mature and responsible enough to consume alcohol. America needs to wake up and realize that lowering the drinking age could be beneficial for our society and help us young adults become more responsible at an earlier age. According to Asch, it's the inexperience not age that is main cause

Weapons and Racism in the Movie Crash

Los Angeles is a multicultural city that is divided into various ethnic neighborhoods. Crash illustrates the union of all these cultures over a period of two days. From local thugs to law enforcement officers, from drug addicts to political figures, Crash brings individuals of varying backgrounds together in a film which represents the attitudes that many people share, particularly those attitudes of racism, whether they are overtly expressed or subconsciously so. However, despite the film's major theme of racism, there is a greater theme that is more subtle: the state of power and control that characters have when a firearm is present. Although the film is overtly about racism, several main characters either use a gun or are directly affected by another character's use of a gun, which demonstrates the film's true premise. "It's the sense of touch, in any real city you walk, you know, you brush pass, people bump into you, in L.A nobody touches you, we are always behind this metall

Effective and Ineffective Parenting Styles

Parenting is the process of promoting and supporting the physical, emotional, social, finical and intellectual development of a child from either infancy to adulthood. Parenting doesn't means that everything a kid does you have to be involve or do it for them. A kid should learn to be independent .Growing up as a kid in Jamaica you learn what's wrong from what's right because you learn from you siblings mistakes while being a parent you should rule the household with an iron fist, you should show love and let them fare you also ( If you give he/she an inch they will take a mile that were fears come in meaning that the kid would not go overboard because they know the consequences) A parent should promote a positive lifestyle in the household a positive lifestyle is good for a child because a parent is considered as a role module because kid live what the learn. For example if a child hears his parents cursing or using vulgar language the child is more likely to use it himself likewise, if the child se

The Importance of Competition

Nowadays, competition is one of the most important elements that are indispensable in lifetime of everyone. Competition teaches people to realize what they need to improve, how they can overcome failure. In "When kids start playing to win" by Cory Turner, the writer wants to say that winning or losing is not a big deal. The main point is what we learn from our experience. And Kohn with "Fun & Fitness without competition" illustrated competition destroys our self-esteem and poisons relationship, either winning or losing in your life, it depends on the way you approach them and how you learn from them. When it comes to children's games, playing games matters more than winning. But some healthy competition is good for children. Turner explained what competition means to the age around five through Vince Lombardi – the football legend and former coach of the Green Bay Packers. Lombardi said: "Winning isn't everything, but it's the only thing." Anytime you win in the first game, that is only thing makes you get more motivation for the second game. All kids start thinking about competition around that age and they wa

Foil Characters in Shakspeare's Hamlet

Hamlet and Laertes, two of the three main/prominent young men in Hamlet (Fortinbras being the third) are each other's foil characters. This element created by Shakespeare helped the readers better understand the depth and mystery of their characters as they are indirectly compared and contrasted throughout the play. Hence, all striking similarities and sharply contrasted differences are not a mere co-incidence. Hamlet and Laertes are compared to each other in terms of their different kind of love for the same person, Ophelia, who is the lover of the former and the sister of the latter: they both reacted in a rather violently grieving way when they saw Ophelia's corpse in the grave. One major difference, though, is that the audience was never really sure of the trueness of Hamlet's feelings for Ophelia until the end of the play when he said "I lov'd Ophelia: forty thousand brothers could not, with all their quantity of love, make up my sum" (V, i, 277-279), where as Laertes' love for Ophelia was always there since the very beginning of the play when he was advising her against believing Hamlet's love, albeit in a domineering way, just like Hamlet's

Setting in The Story of an Hour and Battle Royal

Setting can make or break a story. Short stories revolve around five common elements: plot, setting, character, theme, and conflict. Out of these five, setting is one of the best tools to shape a short story. The settings of short stories are often tied to the social customs of their respective time periods, which helps shape the stories themselves immensely. In the short stories "The Story of an Hour" by Kate Chopin and "Battle Royal" by Ralph Ellison, the setting is a big influence on each story. Kate Chopin's "The Story of an Hour" is set in the late nineteenth century. During this time period women were repressed and treated as unequal and inferior to their husbands and men in general. Because of the ideas and customs of this era, a woman's social standing was often determined by her marriage. These factors often meant a life of solitude and emotional independence. The short story "The Story of an Hour," by Kate Chopin, plays a big role in p

The Crossroads of Pop Warner Football

Pop Warner football player Donovan Hill had hopes and dreams of playing college football one day, but tragically all those hopes and dreams changed in a matter of one play. In a southern California Pop Warner championship, Donovan went to make a tackle an opposing player with his head down. After the contact was initiated Donovan flopped to the ground, landed face down, and laid there motionless. Donovan had broken his neck and became permanently paralyzed from the neck down. Due incidents like this one occurring across America because of contact football, youth football organizations across the country should take contact out of the game. The first issue with youth contact football is the lack of education and knowledge of the coaches and parents. Most coaches are just volunteer parents with little to no education on injuries and how to treat them. The sports culture for youths in suburbs, which have more education and have more sports to choose from, is starting to change as they f

True Colors in A Good Man is Hard to Find

In this writing "A Good Man Is Hard to Find" by Flannery O'Connor, the narrator tells the reader a story about a family vacation that doesn't go quite as planned. The narrator gives insight to the families lives by explaining what all the family members are usually like on a daily basis. The Grandmother is the one who is usually described as dramatic and overbearing, but little do they know, they should have listened to her all along. Grandmother doesn't feel it is appropriate for the family to be going on a family vacation any where near where a criminal that escaped could possibly be hiding. "I wouldn't take my children in any direction with a criminal like that aloose in it", proclaims grandmother. But Bailey, who is grandmothers son, disregards her opinions and they go on the

The Three Most Effective Habits

In Stephen R Covey's, "the seven habits of highly effective people "covey discusses the seven habits that will lead to success. There habits may be simple but they are certainly worthwhile and give individuals something to focus on. By following these very realistic habits you can become a successful individual because you are equipping yourself with good and life-changing habits. Thus, in my opinion the three most effective habits are, seek first to understand then to be understood, be productive and think win-win. First of all, one of the most effective habits is seeking first to understand. The habit of communication is setting aside autobiographical response and caring about what the other person is trying to communicate. For instance, your girlfriend or boyfr

Medea - Men and Women in Ancient Greece

In the play Medea, Euripides shows the major roles that men and women play in Greek society and questions the audience on whether Athenian society was strongly patriarchal. This play is not a man-versus-woman struggle with one side or the other as morally right. It is more of a disapproval of passion, revenge and arrogant pride. Euripides explores these ideas in his play. At the start of the play Medea Euripides gives Medea an opening speech to the chorus in which she reminds the audience of the powerless position of women in Greek society by referring to the women as "wretched creatures" and by stating that they do anything for their men. The chorus strengthen this unequal gender position by agreeing for Medea to get her revenge by saying "you will be right to exact vengeance from your husband". In Greek society women did not have the rights of citizens, married women were dependent on their husbands, restri

France and Spain in the New World

In the late 1400's Europe wanted to expand their oversea trade with Asia. Spanish explorer Christopher Columbus wanted to find a shorter route that would get him to Asia but while on his search he accidentally found North America. After Spain's discovery of the New World, word spread around Europe and other countries began to take interest; in particular France. This historic event of Columbus' discovering North America would eventually lead to many bloodshed battles between the Spaniards and the Natives. On the other hand, France took a different approach with the Natives. The French rather than using violent force on the natives, would actually work along side them with peace. For this and many other reasons, the French were more successful than Spain in its dealing with Indians and accumulation of wealth fro

Music and Culture - Straight Outta Compton

Within the past decade there has been a surfacing of provocative music in American pop culture. Hip-hop music is an overriding force in the music industry and now more than ever has lyrics that contain violence such as rape, murder, and drug and gun usage. (Toop and Fulton) Listeners, especially the teenage audience, have boosted some of the most violent lyrical records to the top of the Billboard Charts. Albums such as The Slim Shady LP, where rapper Eminem speaks of killing his wife and drowning her in a lake, stayed at the number one spot for multiple weeks.(Toop and Fulton) Does the violence in music affect young minds to act more aggressively or is it the environment the teenager is surrounded by? This weekend I watched the movie Straight Outta Compton, a biographical movie telling the story of a popular music group called N.W.A. The movie was very entertaining and it was very interesting to see how different things were about 30 years ago and also to understand how the music I li

Service Dogs and the Disabled

"Dogs have a way of finding the people who need them, filling the emptiness we don't even know we have" - Thom Jones.  Dogs are one of many animals who seek attention and love from humans.  They also give the love back to their owners, because they have learned to trust those who take care of them. There are people with disabilities who are not able to take care of themselves and are in need of assistance.  Dogs are trained to serve those who need assistance.  As defined by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), a service dog is one that performs a task for the benefit of a person with a disability ("Service Animals").  Some of the tasks that service dogs provide are retrieving and delivering dropped items, opening doors, responding to a client's seizure by alerting someone for help or providing stimulation for the person and so much more.  Service dogs have assisted people with disabilities for some time and although they can be expensive and time consumi

Macbeth: Ambition and Greed

Anywhere we go, we can always see people captivated by greed. News reports flood in on criminals and robberies. Yet we can also see examples of those who are thriving in society as a result of their ambition. So how do these two similar characteristics end up distinguishing someone's position in society so meticulously? There clearly is a razor sharp edge between them, and if you're not careful, the strong winds could easily push you off the clouds of ambition into the valley of greed, where the hills can be too steep to climb back up. You must resist the wind and stay on ambition. Ambition is defined as a desire or determination to achieve something. Greed is defined as a selfish desire to achieve something for yourself. They both involve determination and may be good for you, but greed can leave others harmed. Robbers such as Valeri

Geography and the Development of Mesopotamia

The topic of this essay will be how geography played a role in the emergence or development of Mesopotamian Society. First off, let's take a look at the actual word, Mesopotamia. It's Greek for "The Land between the Rivers". This is referring to the Tigris and Euphrates rivers which start in mountains of today's Turkey and flow through modern day Iraq into the Persian Gulf. Mountain rain and melting snow swelled these rivers which caused them to carry soil to plains. This fine soil, also referred to as silt, made the land fertile, and as a result good for crops. These factors combined to make this land ideal for nomadic tribes to settle in over other lands which overtime caused the population of Mesopotamia to increase dramatically. The land of Mesopotamia didn't actually receive very much rainfall annually. To make up for this early cultivators learned to tap the rivers, building reservoirs, and digging canals which would a

Bone - Literary Analysis Essay

Ethnic assimilation has existed since the birth of the American Dream as immigrants have traveled across land looking for opportunity within the United States. One of the most notable was the migration of the Chinese in the late 19th and early 20th century. In the novel "Bone", the author Fae Myenne Ng depicts the representation of assimilation of an ethnic minority through the main character Leila and her family. The novel speaks to the development of the notion that the transition from China to America brings upon estrangement that can bear pains and gains for Asian American families and through Leila's interactions with her family and the relationship she has with them, the reader is able to see the representation and assimilation of the Asian American Identity in the United States and the social and economic struggles that comes along with it. In the novel Leila is seemingly trapped into living in Chinatown, bounded by her Chinese family ties, she refuses to leave in a

Made In Dagenham - Gender Equality

'Made in Dagenham' is an important film directed by Nigel Cole, set in 1968 about the change of gender equality, a group of female Ford machinists bring to Britain. Gender Discrimination was a strong theme that was present in this film. Gender discrimination was a huge issue during 1968 and was shown from the conflicts faced by the main character Rita O'Grady, and why these conflicts were important in this film. A conflict that was clearly present in the movie 'Made in Dagenham' was the relationship between Ford and its 187 female machinists. The female workers get paid less than the male workers because of the fact that they are simply woman in 1968 and were seen as 'second to men'. The woman had not seriously complained about this issue previously until they were regraded as unskilled and received a pay cut. This caused the woman to act out and demand a meeting with the Ford management with the help of their male friend, Albert, who also works at Ford and has exp

1491: New Revelations of the Americas

1491: New Revelations of the Americas before Columbus is a ground-breaking study of the early Americas and Native Americans. This study alters what we thought of the Americas before Europeans arrived and even challenges things school has taught students for years. Mann uncovers new conclusions, made by more recent researches, including the facts that Native American population and arrival in the Americas were probably different than previously thought and cultural advancements were broader. Also, many people believe that when Columbus discovered the Americas, there was only wilderness, although this is false. Firstly, the main theme of 1491 is that racism, language barriers, and European superiority complexes are what has hindered us from truly learning about Native Americans and their cultures. For example,
