Historical Analysis of the Labor-Capital ConflictWyatt Goodwin Professor R. Applegate ILRLR 1100 April 13, 2015 Preliminary Exam #2 The mid twentieth century was an era of technological revolution, unforgiving war, incredible economic volatility, and despite eliciting new challenges for unions, this period served as "the golden age" for labor relations. The mid 1900's was a period of time where societal, economic, and political conditions aligned such that labor was able to exceed prior limitations and grab their share of the rope from even the most obstinate industries. With the introduction of the Congress of Industrial Organization and industrial unionization, significant strides in labor were made in the historically stagnant steel and auto industries. The conditions and actions that pushed the former limitations mainly stemmed from political activism and factionalism - the same changes responsible for exposing new limitations for labor later in time. To understand changes in the societal, economic, and political c |

Drill Instructor Sergeant ParksThroughout my life I've encountered many influential people, but no-one even comes close to comparing to Drill Instructor Sergeant Parks. Through pain Sgt. Parks taught me discipline, in which I desperately needed in my life. Sgt. Parks also taught me how to be a leader, and how a leader properly leads by example. Fitness has always been a huge interest of mine and has always been something in my life that I enjoyed doing over the years, but Sgt. Parks pushed me in a way that I never knew I was capable of. I believe that Sgt. Parks molded me into the marine and man that I am today, I am very grateful and appreciative for what he drilled into my thick skull and taught me. Drill Instructor Sgt. Parks woke the platoon and I up at 0430 every morning For 13 long dreadful freezing cold weeks. Until late in the evenings when my platoon and I would hit the racks one thing was drilled into us each and every day, discipline. Sgt. Parks had a way of instilling discipline, in fact I would cal |

Diving In: The Fault in My TechniqueWriting is a lot like jumping into a big pool. For swimmers, it is fun and exhilarating. They can often dive right in without much thought or preparation because everything comes naturally for them. On the contrary, someone who cannot swim cringes at the thought of jumping into a pool. They tend to take more cautious steps toward the water and once they are in the water, they struggle to stay afloat. I may not be a swimmer in the literal sense, but when it comes to writing, I like to dive into the deep end. I ditch the floatation devices, which is fine throughout the shallow end, such as my introduction, but as I swim deeper into my paper I find myself paddling in circles. Once I am submerged in the water, or creative juices, I become distracted by the many possibilities of a great paper. I realize that my urge to jump into the drafting stage is a strength that also becomes my downfall, because I skip the planning stage, which in turn, causes my overuse of revision/editing during and a |

A Look at Zellweger's SyndromeWhat is the peroxisome? Peroxisomes are small organelles with a single-membrane involved in many metabolic interactions such as oxidation of fatty acids (Cooper, 2000). They are synthesized on free ribosomes and imported into peroxisomes as completed polypeptide chains. Peroxisomes replicate by fission and do not contain their own DNA. The main task of the peroxisome is to oxidize fatty acid chains into acetyl co-enzyme A, a major source of metabolic energy. In this process, hydrogen peroxide is created as a bi-product. However, the peroxisome contains a substantial amount of the enzyme, catalase, which is able to decompose hydrogen peroxide into water and oxygen. In addition, the hydrogen peroxide can be used to oxidize other substances such as phenols, formic acid, and formaldehyde, thus ridding the cell of the toxin. Peroxisomes have slightly altered functions in different areas of the body. In liver cells for example, they are involved in the synthesis of bile acids, while in anima |

Short Story - The Tooth Fairy FraudThe tooth fairy is an important mythical character in the majority of every young child's life. Children around the world find joy in ripping out their adolescent teeth in hopes of receiving a gift from the tooth fairy. I was one of those children. I would anxiously pull out my teeth one by one and leave them under my pillow before I fell asleep for the tooth fairy. Of course, it was painful, but it did not bother me. I knew the pain was worth the gift I would wake up and find under my pillow in the morning. Then, one morning I woke up after pulling my tooth out and was very disappointed. Is the tooth fairy a fraud? My teeth began falling out at the age of five. The first time one of my teeth began wobbling, I was exceptionally scared. After school, I ran to my mother and told her my tooth was moving. My mother explained to me that all my teeth would eventually fall out. Being a child, I did not appreciate hearing that. Ther |

Culture is the Element Which Shapes UsCulture is everything made, learned or shared by the members of a society, defined by everything from language, behavior, values, belief, social habits, including work ethics that are shared by a particular group of people in a place of employment (Boundless, 2015). For example, I am a Hispanic woman and a supervisor in the medical field; I instill culture in my employees from different ethnic backgrounds by keeping an opened mind and setting examples of how patients should be treated, which is with respect; regardless of their ethnicity. I go over the mission and value statements of the department and request feedback from the employees to develop a patient-centric atmosphere in order to manage a positive workplace culture because "culture is the element that shapes us" to become the individuals we are in today's society. Technology In today's technology driven world, people are expected to have the means to communicate with others at any given moment. The ability to crea |

The Songs of Our LivesIn music there has always been a cultural effect. But none more prominent than the musical movements in the 60's and 90's. From peace protests to the birth of teenage angst the 60's and 90's musical movements changed their time and the world forever. In this time period the grunge and psychedelic movement made entire generations of kids lives panned out differently because of the music they listened to. The Vietnam war in the 60's was a key part of the musical movement in the 60's because artists were able to use music as an outlet to project their political views to the world. There was also motown and rock and roll. Motown was mainly a black genre that spoke for equality and rock was making some political commentary but largely sex and drug based. In the 90's grunge and hip hop were the two biggest movements. Both were outlets for anger but in different styles. The grunge movement was more of an anger for regular teens while hip hop spoke out for blacks and the anger of being a black |

The Ghost in HamletGhost stories are big business in today's modern English language culture. The 6th Sense, one of the most popular ghost films of the decade, grossed about $300,000,000 in theaters in the United States alone (Box Office Mojo). The majority of those within the English speaking cultures may not realize however, the impact Hamlet had on both this movie and every ghost story made after Shakespeare's work. The way ghosts are looked at, felt about, thought about, and presented in television, movies, and books would be completely different without the influence of Hamlet's first encounter with the ghost of his father. Without Hamlet, the big business of ghost shows and movies would be drastically different today. In this analysis, I will primarily focus on Hamlet's first encounter with his father's ghost in Act 1, Scene 5. Without the influence of Hamlet, our thoughts and the way we perceive ghosts would also be different, with the enormous influence this scene has had on how we feel about g |

Themes in Sonny's BluesThe short story Sonny's Blues, by James Baldwin, is a story about responsibility , imprisonment, and salvation. Throughout the story, the importance of responsibility is a recurring theme. The narrator, is put in charge of his brother from a very young age, by their mother right before she past. This puts him in an awkward position, and at that age, he didn't have any clue how to take responsibility for Sonny. His attempts to reconnect and be responsible, were shot down but eventually, he persisted through the rejections by Sonny, and himself. He got Sonny a place to live (his wife's parents house) so that he could finish high school. Although they did not understand each other, and did not always get along, he did things like let Sonny move in, and try to give Sonny advice, because he wanted to be a responsible older brother. There were times where he couldn't get passed their differences, but in the end he was still trying to show this responsibility. Responsibility is also shown in |

Animal Shelters Without AchievementsThink about how many times people stop at pet shop to look for a new puppy. Now think about how many of those people have stopped at an animal shelter to see if there is some pet they would adopt. Not even half of them have been in an animal shelter, even though they duplicate the number of pet shops. If a person is asked about directions to get to the closest animal shop they will know how to get to at least one of them, on the other hand, if a person is asked how to get to the closest animal shelter, most of the people will not know about one in their city. The thing about animal shelters is that they are not known by everybody. Only people who are interested in volunteering in one know about them. The non-profit organization Animal Rescue League is succeeding with their purpose; however, they are not succeeding with every animal shelter's purpose. What they do is save homeless animal's lives, but what is next? People have realized over the past years that homeless pets population |

Poetry Analysis - Our GenerationJason Nichols' poem "Our Generation" was written in early February 2014. Nichols was 14 and in eighth grade at the time he wrote the poem. The title "Our Generation" simply brings in readers to see what the speaker has to say. The poem starts off with heavy critique of today's generation. The meaning is later reversed. The tone changes and the reader can potentially be motivated at the end. This is all due to the speaker's last line of the poem. It is what truly unravels the power of this reverse poem. The fact that an eighth grader at the time wrote this, means that it does not take much to prove a major point. "Our Generation" is a perfect look in the mirror for the self-conscious modern generation. The tone of the poem appears to be very serious, as the speaker heavily criticizes the audience. His first criticism states that "Our generation (is) a failure" (5). If that is not enough, he continues to criticize this generation's negativity. Calling the audience out on being quitters, he states that "Giving up was how we handled our problems" (17-18). After the speaker's heavy criticism, he states w |

America and Russia: 1945-1946Why relations between the USA and USSR changed in the years 1946-1949? There were several factors as to why relations between the USA and the USSR changed between the years of 1946 to 1949. One of these factors was that Truman had set up the Truman Doctrine in 1947 to stop the spread of communism, as seen in the source. This worsened relations between the USA and USSR because the Truman Doctrine was backed by the Marshall plan which supplied money to countries that were part of the Truman Doctrine and this was directly helping countries not to become communist and therefor directly went against Stalin's idea of Soviet expansion. This created tension between the two countries as the USA was now using money and threats against the USSR to stop their expansion. Another reason for why relations between the USSR and the USA worsened between 1946 and 1949 was the fact that Stalin had set up Cominform, as seen in the source, in a |

Being Liberal in IndiaWHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE A LIBERAL IN INDIA By Deepannita Misra I am an Indian. By default, I am a worshipper of secular, inclusive democracy and free speech. Freedom in thought and speech 'should' symbolize what I stand for, in theory. In reality, I am the Indian who repines about my right to voice opinions every second day. And yet, precisely at the hour of need, this Indian simply suppresses his voice. In fact, when I think of the word 'liberal', Rabindranath Tagore's stirring words instantly come to mind: "Where the mind is without fear and the Head is held high Where knowledge is free Where the mind is led forward by thee Into ever-widening thought and action Into that heaven of freedom, my Father, Let my country awake" Tagore made a sincere entreaty to Indians more than a century ago, albeit one that has fallen on deaf ears, time and again. He was, indeed, ahead of his times in reminding us that in freedom lies the ultimate awakening. Sixty-e |

Research on Bilingual TeachingBilingual education, as an educational program, was initially promoted by educators in the seventies (Hunger of Memory 26) and since then has been a topic of many debates in America. Some argue that bilingual education only serves as a detriment to American culture. Others argue that bilingual education is beneficial to those who come to live in America and want to become a part of the culture, but lack proficiency in the English language. Two authors, who have each taken opposite sides of the debate on bilingual education in America, are: Richard Rodriguez and Ariel Dorfman. Richard Rodriguez believes that bilingual education creates a feeling of separateness between foreign language speakers and American society; therefore, bilingual education delays the formation of a public identity. In contrast, Ariel Dorfman argues that bilingualism in America will be a bridge to better understanding other cultures. I assume the position of being either, against or entirely in favor of bilingual |

My Mother's Courageous Battle Having eight kids, my mother was a stay at home mom. There was a sign over the kitchen door, "Grand Central Station." The amount of traffic that went through that door was surmountable. Neighborhood kids were a household staple. She was a typical mom, loving and caring, beautiful inside and out. All friends envied me, for I had such a hip, fun, Mom. At age 68 years old, she was diagnosed with cancer. Sharing her story of courage, character, and influence is a source of pride. "My mother is my inspiration; she fought a courageous battle with cancer. Her determination was profound and left an imprint that will remain with me for the rest of my life." Sitting in the doctor's office with my mother and hearing the words, "You have lung cancer," was a minute in my life that I will always remember. I recall hearing my heartbeat as loud as a drum. I looked at my mom, and she said, "Don't worry, I got this!" The doctor proceeded to tell her that t |

Choices and Consequences in MacbethWilliam Shakespeare (26 April 1564 – 23 April 1616) was a great and extremely skillful English writer. He composed numerous poems and plays that influenced artists, poets, philosophers and thinkers all over the world. One of his most successful plays, The Tragedy of Macbeth, was written between 1603 and 1607 for King James I, to illustrate the consequences of mutiny. In the beginning of the play there is a war between Scotland and Norway. The Thane of Cawdor betrays Scotland and fights for Norway, leaving King Duncan of Scotland to execute him and pass the title to Macbeth. Later Macbeth receives foresight from oracles promising him the throne of Scotland; in response he kills Duncan, his best friend, Banquo and Macduff's family to secure his throne. Later Macduff takes revenge and slays Macbeth, continuing the vicious circle of treachery. However, Macduff's choice to kill Macbeth resulted in peace and order for the people of Scotland, who suffered from Macbeth's avarice. Therefore, Shakespe |

College Sports - Money Makes the World go 'Round"By preventing athletes from getting paid, all we're really doing is transferring money from young men -- the majority of whom are neither white nor wealthy -- to coaches, athletic directors, architects, and construction companies" (Mahler). Instead of money being in the pockets of the athletes, it is in the hands of those who do not even step out into the field. Universities have been taking advantage of these young students for years; now is the time to change this. College athletes are being robbed under the disguise of being amateurs. This is a current issue because student athletes should be considered employees. The students are also not getting proper education by committing so much time to their sport and not having the money as a resource to assist them in their studies. Meanwhile, schools are using athletes as products to generate money while the students still receive none of that money. Student athletes, on and off scholarship, should be paid to help with necessit |

Why Sex Education Is RightSex education is one of the most controversial ongoing debates in the United States. Some people believe that sex education should be taught at home or in church, while others believe it should be taught in all schools. All schools should provide sex education to teach children to understand what sex truly means. Sex education is what makes teenagers and young adults aware of birth control and the consequences of having sexual intercourse. This program should be a part of health classes and required for all students in schools. Sex education programs help parents explain sex to their children, and give teenagers proper information about sexual transmitted diseases, birth control, and their bodies. Judie Brown, the President of American Life League, believes that sex education in schools is wrong. She states, "Sex education programs in schools have been taking away the parents' responsibilities of teaching their children about human sexuality" (Sex Education: Why is it Wrong) |

The Truth About MaterialismEver since the first humans found a shiny rock, became obsessed and fought over it, we have been captivated by objects that are unnecessary for our survival but are pleasurable to own. The objects I'm talking about, also called luxuries come in the form of iPods, computers, blackberries and anything you can imagine that are not necessary for our survival today. The meaning of what is considered to be a luxury has changed greatly in our recent history; we no longer need just food, shelter and water to survive, we depend on much more that would have been considered luxuries even as far back as one hundred years ago. One hundred years ago, people lived happily without needing a telephone or a car. As technology supposedly improved our lives, we got more dependent on things that weren't necessary to live. We must become independent from luxuries and learn to live without them. By being dependant on luxuries, we are becoming attached to objects that can only provide temporary satisfaction. |

Nickel and Dimed by Barbara Ehrenreichnickle and dimed 4. More than once Ehrenreich discusses the severe bodily and psychological harm that hard work at low pay can cause, the physical damage as well as spiritual damage. While working as a maid, Ehrenreich saw that many of her co-workers had physical problems because they had worked as maids for many years. While on the job as a maid, Ehrenreich had to scrub " hard-stone floors [without] knee pads" the company she worked for did not have them (50). Although she did not stay on the job for long, other people had experienced that job for a long time. The fact that they have to kneel to clean someone's hard floor gives the impression that those people experience physical problems with their knees. Just to get payed a low wage people have to clean houses on their knees and crawl like animals to make a living. On another occasion one of Ehrenreich co-workers, Holly, "trips in a hole in the ground and falls down and screams" (63). On the job one is expecte |

Credit Risk and Financial InstitutionsIntroduction A commercial bank is a financial institution that provides services, such as accepting deposits, giving business loans and auto loans, mortgage lending, and basic investment products like savings accounts, certificates of deposit, credit and debit cards etc. (Investopedia, 2015). Lending accounts for a major portion of the activities performed by commercial banks. The loan portfolio is typically the largest asset and the predominate source of revenue (Comptroller's Handbook, 1998). A commercial bank's loan portfolio requires careful planning especially as the risk-return profile varies from one loan product to another. Different products carry different levels of risk and returns, with a higher rate of return required on higher risk products to compensate for the increased profitability of loss (MGMT3081, Unit 3, p. 53). The aim of this case study is to provide the best advice possible to the credit manager of a commercial bank as to the impact of a spike in demand for |

An Overview of Corn SnakesGeneral Information Corn snakes are the one of the most popular pet snakes because they are easy to care for and come in a variety of colors and patterns. There are thousands of different colors and markings called morphs. They do well in captivity living on average 15-20 years or more, that's longer than they would in the wild! Corn snakes are about 3-5 feet when fully grown and have a long, slender body. Male corn snakes can be slightly bigger than females but not all of the time. Corn snakes breed from March to May. They are oviparous, meaning that they lay eggs, laying about 10-30 eggs. The eggs need heat and humidity so they are laid in warm locations and left to hatch on their own. Their natural habitat is on the east coast from lower New Jersey to Florida and over to Arkansas and Louisiana. Corn snakes are awake during the day or diurnal. They like to go underground, enter buildings and climb in search of prey. They feed only a few times a week and eat everything from lizards to |

To Build a Fire by Jack London"To Build a Fire" by Jack London, tells a story of a man traveling alone with his dog (Husky dog) through the Yukon Valley to reunite with some friends of his. Him being a "new-comer", a "chechaquo," who ignores the advice from the Old Timer (the precautions of traveling in weather below 50 degrees and later during the journey recalls and wished he had not,) which London portrays his main character is being ignorant and underestimating nature in the end can end up in a tragedy. Miles before meeting his destination he finds himself in trouble, in which he is slowly but surely freezing and most likely will have to come to terms in dealing with his own death. Whether it is from oneself or nature, beings can only withstand so much and should be able to recognize their own limit. In the beginning, London portrays the man (protagonist) as a smart but ignorant being: "He was quick and alert in the things in life, but not the significances." Stating that although he knew of the cause of things the effect of it was rather oblivious to him. The man (protagonist) is surprise over a |

Kristallnacht - Acts of Horror and ViolenceThe first time I saw the word, Kristallnacht, I was teenager, and I thought of sparkling stars or pieces of gemstone shining in a dark sky. Now I know that the reality is so far from that flawless vision of a youth. The word Kristallnacht was a measure of lyrical sarcasm, and referred to the fact that pieces of glass from the wrecked windows, shined like crystal in the streets. "It refers to the fragments of shattered window glass that littered the sidewalks in front of Jewish shops that had been vandalized during the night." (Steinweis, 1) Kristallnacht, a night most people in the world would rather forget. During the period from the early 1930's to the mid 40's, the Jews in Germany, Poland, and all the way through Europe faced concentrated discrimination from the Nazis. Beginning with boycotts and pogroms, the Nazis continued to institute legislation against the Jews with the Nuremberg Laws. Organization of ghettos began in the late 1930's.
