Narrative of My Mother

When my teacher assigned this essay to me, the first person that popped into my mind was my mum. I have so much to say about her. She is a wonderful person. There are memories I fondly retain about us, but that was only between us. However, I'm going to sweep you in a wave of nostalgia as I tell you my story – between my mum and I. My mum is a beautiful person inside out but there are times were I would doubt myself about this statement. We have fights, we have our arguments but we sure get over them as fast as lightning. My mom was born and raised in a humble background, with only her mother supporting her financially and without any moral support from any of her family members. And that explains the reasons behind her being so thrifty all her spending's. She rarely spends money and only does when it is deemed to be essential to her so we always have control on our expenses.

Speaking From Behind a Wall

It's not a mystery that there comes a point in a person's life that they do not like face-to-face confrontation. It's not as easy for them to express themselves to others because their fear of the other person judging them interferes with their ability to speak up. Habitually, humans try to find a different approach to prevent situations that they do not want to carry out. Avoidance was not quite working out. People have found writing to be their safe haven instead of confronting a dilemma and others head on. Hiding behind written words whether it be handwritten or typed has been effective in helping people reveal what's in their soul. Other forms of communication have been taken advantage of to replace face-to-face confrontation. People have been using written/typed out words instead of actually using their mouth to express themselves. It has become very convenient and crucial. It also can be effective simply because it is faster, easier, and more accessible. Nowadays people are abl

Airlines and Route Planning

Flight routes are the gateway to the world, whether long haul, short haul, direct or connecting flight every route in today's benchmark airlines have been carefully analysed and evaluated to determine its cost/benefit ratio to ensure it adds value to the airlines services. When planning to add a new route to its existing network an airline must ensure all factors are taken into account. Ranging from bilateral agreements and legalities through to profit cannibalism and market share each factor needs carefully and accurately calculated in order to forecast the routes cost/benefit ratio. Route planning is a process that works alongside the fleet planning and scheduling. When the airline has decided on the routes it wants to service it can then proceed to buy the aircraft that matches the specific requirements of that route, alternatively this can be done in the opposite order having purchased aircraft the airline can then work on finding appropriate routes for that aircrafts capabilitie

nursing

My goal in the health field is to obtain a BSN degree, and pursue a career as a maternity or NICU nurse. I have always had interest in the health field, even as a child. During my childhood, I remember loving to go to the hospital to visit a grandparent or family member when they were in there. I was intrigued by all the monitors and wires that were hooked up to my loved one, as well as all the doctors and nurses running around the hospital hallways. I also enjoyed watching health shows on television such as "Life in the E.R.", and still currently enjoy them. My mom had a home daycare, so I grew up around children and infants my whole life. Being around children made my heart grow for them, I always wanted to hold them, feed them and even change their diapers. My love and interest for infants and healthcare started at a young age, and has only grown more with me. The combination between the love for children and helping people is what lead me to my decision and goal of becomi

Television - The Plug in Drug

Born in 1936, Marie Winn grew up to become the famous author of a book series, the first of which being The Plug-In Drug: Television, Children, and the family. Winn believes that, "Television is not merely one of a number of important influences upon today's child. Through the changes it has made in family life, television emerges as the important influence in children's lives today," which I absolutely agree with. Children who watch television on a consistent basis are negatively influenced by its brainwashing powers. In 2005, South Park aired an episode where a major character, Eric Cartman, decides to create a holiday called, "Kick a Ginger Day." A "ginger kid" is a child who has both red hair and freckles. Although the creators of the show did not mean for this episode to cause any harm, it did. In 2009, Facebook groups

Obesity and Air Travel

Imagine waking up early to get to the airport on time, standing on a ridiculously long line to check your bag, and an even longer line to get through security just to board your 16-hour flight. As soon as you sit down at your seat the first thing you want to do is get comfortable and perhaps some sleep after an exhausting process. However, a flight attendant informs you that a passenger is uncomfortable because you cannot quite fit into a single standard seat. Since it is a full flight and there are no other available seats for you to purchase you must exit the plane. Would this upset you or would you understand your fellow passenger is uncomfortable and exit quietly? Airplanes are becoming fuller; flights are becoming more expensive, and obesity is now an epidemic especially in America. In fact, obesity is officially classified as a disease by the American Medical Association. Since an airline can accommodate a handicapped person by allowing them an aisle chair or a seat with greater

Academic Stress on Teen Students

Homework, schoolwork, tests, quizzes, state exams, and more make up the pressure cooker that is modern-day school. This constant pressure stresses millions of students every single day and places mental and physical strain on the body that can potentially harm students' health. Stress is the feeling created by the body when it reacts to certain events that place tension upon one's physical, mental, or emotional state. When under constant stress, also known as hyperarousal, blood pressure rises, breathing and heart rates accelerate, blood vessels constrict and muscles tense up (Tennant). The amount of academic stress teenage students experience negatively affects their mental and physical wellbeing by taking a toll on their health. There are two types of stress; eustress, known as good stress and distress known as bad stress. A small amount of eustress is always good; eustress motivates students and helps them concentrate on more than one task. This is good when the person feels in con

Social Constructions of Gender

Since the moment one is born into a society, one is labeled female or male. This becomes more than just a biological fact, society creates gender roles. Society then socially constructs gender where it gives meaning, ideas and adds characteristics. In contrast to the biological fact, gender construction is the process of creating distinctions between both genders and defining what is masculine and feminine in a society. However, the meaning of each gender changes between different cultures based on the expectations. Each culture then shapes how people treat, communicate, and act towards who they consider to be female and male. In the Yemen culture men are superior to women. Women become subordinate to the authority of men, which can include her father, husband, brother, or even her own son. For Example, in I Am Nujood, Age 10 and Divorced, Nujood Ali a 10 year old Yemen girl that is forced by her father to marry a man, who is three times her age. At first Nujood does not question he

Hemingway - Simple Can Be Brilliant

Earnest Hemingway was a very well-known and highly praised American author who greatly influenced fiction literature in the twentieth century. Not only did Hemingway's writing entertain many readers during this time period; it also won him a Nobel Prize. One of his most famous novels, In Our Time, portrays how his writing was effective and how he was an export with the use of rhetoric. Hemingway's style and technique such as his simplicity with word choice and syntax, his use of honest and truthful details, and his application of the iceberg principle shows how he used language to successfully convey purpose. Hemingway was not known for complicated or complex writing; instead, he was known for simple and colloquial writing that he used in an impressively effective way. This style of writing was probably a result of the many lessons that Hemingway learned while he was a news reporter. News reporters are taught to write just enough to cover all important information about a subject wit

My Interpersonal Communication Competence

Throughout my life, I have always had a desire for communication with others. I have my fair share of ups and downs when it comes to interpersonal relationships. Elementary and middle school had me thinking I was that awkward kid but when I finally made it to high school, I began to understand how communication with others really works and how to control it. Through the Spitzberg and Cupach Interpersonal Communication Competence Assessment, I was able to visualize and understand my communication strengths and weaknesses. In the following paper, I will layout and asses my scores on the competence test, as well as include my own understanding on several dimensions of the test. Appropriate Effective Adaptable Conversational Involvement Conversational Management Empathy Your Name 15/15 10/15 11/15 14/15 13/15 12/15 Effectiveness is the ability to achieve the interpersonal goals that you set for yourself (Comm1500 Workbook, 2015). Abortion: The Debate of Life or Death

The topic of abortion is one of the few issues in today's society that is still considered controversial, because the participants in this debate each have firmly-fixed views that reflects their opinion in this matter. Abortion is defined as termination of pregnancy by either removing a fetus or embryo before it is capable of surviving by its own. The first type of abortion is called 'Miscarriage' which takes place spontaneously. The second type of abortion is called 'Induced Abortion' which is intentional (Finer, et al. 2005). The debate regarding the morality and lawfulness of induced abortion is an ongoing controversy. In most cases there are two sides in this debate, one known as 'pro-choice' which defends the rights of women to choose the termination of her pregnancy, and the second is known as 'pro-life' which defends the rights of the unborn fetus. I believe abortion should be more regulated but not illegal. The fetus is human from the moment of concept

Working for a Living

Now days most of the people have to work to their daily life. However no all the jobs are as nice as we would like to. The issue about have to work no matter the situation make things complicate in our life. Although not always we get what we want, we can take the positive of it. Work for a living have challenges and rewards which include many things. After a long time looking for a part time job I've found one. I got hired at mc Donald's as cashier to work three days a week after school with a salary of $8 p/h. At the beginning my boss was really nice with me. Maybe he was nice with me because I was new, and, he didn't want to scare me. After two weeks I was all set with the training. I was in love with my job. The people who worked there were very nice with me. Additionally the best of that was that I was getting pay weekly. In fact I was enjoying the job where I was able to see new people almost every day and getting pay for it. After two months working at mc Donald's things star

Research Paper - Person Centered Therapy

ABSTRACT Person centered, or client centered, therapy is a therapeutic approach that places significant focus on the client. The benefits of this therapeutic approach are that the client learns to play an active role in their therapy, take responsibility for actions and thoughts that will usher in success in their lives as well as having a greater respect and understanding of others. It has been suggested that this mode of therapy is the most demanding upon the therapist. The ability of the therapist to be genuine, accepting and empathetic is essential for clients' success as well. ORIGINS There were four (4) marked periods of person centered therapy development. The first (1) period was during the 1940's where psychologist Carl Rogers developed what was known at the time as nondirective counseling. The nondirective approach was in reaction to the traditional approaches that were prevalent

Frederick Douglass, Education and Freedom

Recently I had the opportunity to read the book entitled "Narrative of the Life of Fredrick Douglass." This book was very interesting in many different ways. Especially the fact that he used education to set him free. In the 18oo's slaves being able to read was highly unheard of. Today many teens' especially African American teens don't understand how fortunate they are to be able to receive an education. Fredrick Douglass is an absolute prime example of you can achieve whatever it is in life you want no matter your background or what you go through. Fredrick Douglass was a former slave who was born in Tuckahoe which was about twelve miles from Talbot county in Maryland. Like many slaves he doesn't have accurate knowledge of his birthday but he does know he's about 17 years after overhearing a conversation his master was having. His mother was a slave as well. She was located on a plantation many miles away from him but she would visit Douglass throughout the night very oft

Plastic and Cosmetic Surgery

Plastic surgery has become a multibillion pound industry as individuals strive to look a particular way. Several people want chemicals and silicone injected into their body to make them feel 'happy' or 'secure', but in some cases people have gone to extremes to achieve this. So plastic surgery; a beneficial enhancement or dangerous and vain? Plastic surgery focuses on repairing and reconstructing abnormal structures of the body caused by birth defects, developmental abnormalities, trauma, infection, tumours or disease. Although cosmetic surgery is a type of plastic surgery that alters someone's appearance, it is carried out to change a healthy person's appearance to achieve what they feel is a more desirable look. While this can have a positive impact on self-esteem, there is no physical or medical reason to have the procedure. People with life threatening burns have been strongly advised to have skin substitutions or skin grafts as they have been phenomenal for patients

The UK Immigration Debate

The debate of migration in the UK is a very sensitive topic this is due to the many costs and also benefits it has on the social, political and economic areas of the UK. To begin with, there are many things that can make people emigrate from their own countries into another country such as the UK. These can be things such as a lack of a sustainable infrastructure, the absence of jobs opportunities, a deficiency of education for children and young adults, also problems with the economy and political instability for example in India there are many corrupt politicians as a result can be enough to drive people out of their country. Finally for someone to leave their country it can be down to environmental reasons, for example natural disasters or the climate for some people is too difficult to leave in such as countries in northern and southern Africa. These are all called push factors. Countries of the world colored by corruption levels (World Corruption Index 2010: Transparency Interna

The Lady of Shalott by Alfred Lord Tennyson

The Lady of Shalott by Alfred Lord Tennyson tells of a woman cut off from society and human interactions - the simplicities of life. A feminist reading can be applied to this poem, as Tennyson explores ideas of deprivation, passivity and male dominance through diction, symbolism and characterisation. Male dominance is a prominent ideas conveyed in this poem. The Lady's isolation, caused by a curse, very much oppresses females of the Victorian Era. "She has heard a whisper say, "A curse is on her if she stay" (Line 48-49). The Lady is representative of the woman figure in the Victorian Era, while the curse maybe seen as the man of these times. The woman is oppressed and silenced by the man, he achieve this through the Lady's lack of knowledge – "She knows not what the curse maybe" (line 51)- as knowledge maybe perceived as power. "She hath no loyal knight and true" (line 71). In the Victorian Era, it is clear the male figure is of upmost significance and as a result the need to mention, "she hath no loyal knight." is established. Again the male figur

Family in The One Day of the Year

Traditional family ideals, including ones of the 1950's Australia, dictate the expected roles of different family members. However, this expectation is not assumed in all family dynamics. Alan Seymour's The One Day the Year (1958), explores the notion of stereotypical family roles in relation to the represented family in the drama. Hughie, arguably both an antagonist and a protagonist, is the educated son of ex war veteran Alf Cook. Due to a vast range of factors, Hughie becomes liberated and thus begins the deterioration of the traditional family stance. Seymour represents this challenging of established family dynamics through the concepts of educational background, Australian cultural identity and generational differences. Throughout the drama, all Seymour's characters discard this notion of traditional family roles with one possible exception in Hughie's mother, Dot. Seymour conveys these ideas through the employment of a range of dramatic techniques including stage directions, cha

UF Jazz Band Concert Review

Before taking History of Jazz, I personally was not a fan of jazz concerts or jazz music overall. I thought it was probably the most annoying genre of music that could exist because I could not stand the sound of trumpets and clarinets blaring in my ears, it would give me massive headaches and I would just want it to stop. However, after taking this course my view of Jazz took a 180. After learning about the history of jazz, how it began, the different types of rhythms I developed quite an interest in this kind of music-one that hadn't previous existed. Because of this course, I attended my first jazz concert at the University Auditorium on the University of Florida campus. The concert was held by our schools jazz band and consisted of a variety of songs, each evoking various emotions and moods from the audience. The performance included a variety of numbers each with solos from different sections of instruments. The music wasn't the only thing that contributed to the show, the ambience and environment of the concert heavily weighed in. The appearance of the auditorium itself created a more authentic vibe during the concert. As soon as I entered the auditorium I had to ru

Dual-Earner Families and Maternal Gatekeeping

There are many debates about whether gender roles have a big impact on parenting. Ranson (2010) discusses the topic in detail with three types of couples that interchanges the gender roles of the breadwinner and primary caregiver. In general, it seems that interchanging these roles will not have a big impact towards the family (Ranson, 2010). However, a few problems have risen due to maternal gatekeeping mostly in dual-earner families. Maternal gatekeeping prevents fathers' involvement with the children which affects the relationship of the family as a whole. Therefore, this essay will analyze how the interchanging of the gender roles of the breadwinner and primary caregiver and role strain evokes maternal gatekeeping due to different duration of time able to spend with their children. The origin of maternal gatekeeping is due to the role expectations and beliefs of being a mother (Pedersen & Kilzer, 2013). The norm in society has mostly been the mother being the primary caregiver and

Sexual Assaults on Campus

One important responsibility of a good citizen is becoming educated on current issues and then actively working with other citizens to develop policies, programs, or plans for tackling those issues. One such issue is the sexual misconduct of women on college campuses. What is perhaps most disturbing about violence on college campus is that the majority of incidents, including rape and other sexual assaults, are committed by the students themselves. It is important to raise awareness around the intense reality that sexual assault still exists on U.S. college campuses because it is a major problem, especially since campus administration don't understand the extremity of the problem. Emma Sulkowicz alleges that a classmate sexually assaulted her on the first day of her sophomore year in August 12 on Columbia University campus in New York. She didn't report it at first because of the shame she was feeling but then met two other women that had been raped by the same person. However the
