The Merchant of Venice - William Shakespeare

William Shakespeare, who has written many different comedies and tragedies throughout his time, has revolutionized the literary world through his works. However, it is an on going debate if his play, The Merchant of Venice should be seen as a tragedy or comedy. Although many people view the play as a tragedy, they are often ignoring the humor that Shakespeare included in the story to make it more entertaining. In this play there are a few elements of tragedy that are apparent in this play, The Merchant of Venice should be classified as a comedy because of its abundance of happy endings, light-hearted jokes, and true love. Shakespeare, in his written work his comedic plays it is known for his comedic relief through the characters and the scenes. Generally speaking, this play has plenty of silliness and light dialect, which are motivations to rule this play to be a comedy rather than a tragedy. Shakespeare wittily enters funny scenes and joyful jokes to lift up the pressure or tension that the play delivers. Launcelot and Jessica's cheerful discussion in Act III, scene v is a key illustration of the entertainment Shakespeare is trying to give to his readers. In the past scene bef

The Path of Macbeth's Downfall

William Shakespeare, known as the greatest writer in the English language, was known for writing some of the greatest poems and plays of all time. The legacy some of Shakespeare's works carry with them as well as the lessons that are still relevant to this day make his works timeless. Shakespeare's playwrights got him a spot in the distinguished Lord Chamberlain's Men, by far the most prestigious theater company in Renaissance England. The legend of Shakespeare goes long past his playwriting, however, as he was also an accomplished actor, even acting in his own plays. Shakespeare also contributed to the English language adding over 1000 words to the language, creating the Shakespearean-style sonnet and writing a majority of his famous plays in a style known as iambic pentameter. The Tragedy of Macbeth is one of the most famous plays written by Shakespeare. The main character, Macbeth, has a lot of pressure on him from other surrounding forces, changing his image from a brave soldier wi

Muhammad Ali - The Whole Story

One of the greatest stories that was ever told and went down in history is the story of Muhammad Ali. Growing up hearing about Muhammad Ali thinking he was a professional boxer that can beat anyone, not until I chose to write this review on the movie of Muhammad Ali: The Whole Story that I realized it was a lot more then that. And wow what a beautiful story line it was. Muhammad Ali, whose actual birth name was actually Cassius Marcellus Clay, born and raised in Louisville in Kentucky on January 17th 1942. Ali's father, Marcellus Clay was a mural painter in many churches around town and his mother Odessa Clay was a regular worker. As a young boy, Cassius enjoyed doing what he wanted when he wanted. He woke up one day realizing his bike was stolen and became enraged and started threatening those around him and said he would "whup whoever stole it". Louisville police officer Joe Martin heard about this situation and decided to put him in the boxing ring where he could take his

The Psychology of Personality

I enjoy playing basketball a lot. The transient moment of being on the court makes me feel joyous, energetic, and my negatives thoughts and worries would vanish. Recently (the day before term 1 examination), because of the enormous work load and coming of the examinations, I have been putting a lot of consistent efforts and invested a lot of time to prepare myself, and thus I haven't played basketball for a long time. Every time I peeked at the window and looked down, where people were playing happily on the court, I wished I didn't have to prepare for exams and just play relaxingly. Just the day before examination, despite acknowledging the importance of goods grades, I finally played basketball. Normally, I would easily felt guilty when not being productive a

A Doll's House - Henrik Ibsen

"A Doll's House," written by Henrik Ibsen makes many hints about the roles of society and how females were treated at the time. According to the author, "...it is not about women's rights as such; rather, the drama is about human rights." (Forward 1) However, from this play you can observe what Ibsen believed about the roles of society and the equality between males and females. The author shows how the roles were perceived at the time the play was written and what he believed about the central issues. Nora Helmer, the main character, strives to be the perfect wife and mother that society expects her to be; however, she is trapped within a "dollhouse" that is her home. Helmer has built a fine life for his doll wife and her wonderful doll children. Nora's transformation comes later as she discovers her role in society is forced upon her and has a desperate need to get out. The Sex Education Debate

Everyone has an opinion about sexuality education. From opinionated parents at local PTA meetings to state governors who must choose the best way to apply federal funding to the programs teaching it. The sex education debate in America takes on special relevance because sex and its related health implications are a reality in the lives of many young people. The two most popular methods used in schools in the United States are abstinence education and comprehensive sex education. And, while the federal government continuously funds programs that suggest refraining from sex until marriage, there has been no research to confirm the program's effectiveness. The mission of abstinence education is that children and teenagers avoid engaging in sexual activities altogether. In 1996, the United States government passed a law giving funding to states offering programs that support this approach in public schools. Schools receiving these funds must teach students that they should "just

Standardized Testing and College Success

Standardized test scores play a huge role for students planning to attend college. Colleges use these scores to make decisions regarding student admission and financial aid or scholarship opportunities. While many argue that higher test scores predict student success in college, others feel test scores are poor predictors of student success. We feel standardized test scores should not be the determining factor for college admission because they do not assess the student's work ethic, leadership ability, or professional behavior, which are all qualities needed to be successful in the workforce after college. A strong work ethic is needed to be successful in college and when students graduate and move forward into the workforce. To demonstrate a positive work ethic, one needs a strong sense of integrity and the ability to work well with others. This is accomplished by demonstrating a strong commitment to ethical practices so others will be more willing to share in the task required to

Bombings of World War II

When talking about the Second World War, it is usually viewed as a total war. A total war can be defined as a war which is unrestricted in terms of the weapons used, the territory or combatants involved, or the objectives pursued, especially one in which the accepted rules of war are disregarded. When Hitler launched the war campaign, he believed it was going to be successful and rapid, he did not expect to meet much resistance, especially from the civilian population. Despite his expectancies and plans, the war turned out to be a great bloodshed, involving 61 countries from all over Europe, Oceania and USA and leading to total casualties of 72.275.847 million people among both, the soldiers and the civilians, including 38 million of wounded and 29 million of captured soldiers. One of the main features supporting the total war was heavy continuous bombings of military and civilian targets. In order to prove that Second World War can be viewed as a total war through the bombing of ci

Reflective Essay - Achieving My Goals

Growing up, especially during my high school days at the prestigious Kings College Lagos, I spent most of my holiday breaks at my Uncle's place. My Uncle is a general merchant (Business Man as locally called in Nigeria) and owns a good number of factories and chain of businesses. I always visited some of the Factories and Business office where I learned and understood production flow, inventory controls or warehouse management and customer satisfaction. Working there had a tremendous impact on me which inspired me. Quite naturally my first thoughts about a career tended towards being an Industrialist. I wanted to be like my Uncle. At undergraduate level my interest leaned

Themes of The White Heron

Sometimes we often forget who we are as a person and what matters to us the most. We let human desires take over our minds and bodies and do as everybody wants or wishes. We will do anything and make sacrifices to please a loved one or even a stranger. We all want to fly high and arise over the difficulties that exist here on this planet. We all wish to accomplish a greater understanding of our soul and Sylvia has by exhibiting her passion for nature over human companionships, all with the help of a rare special bird named the white heron. The title of the story, "The White Heron," is not just an ordinary bird but a "queer tall white bird with soft feathers and long thin legs. And it would have a nest perhaps in the top of a high tree, made of sticks, something like a hawk's nest" (54). The young man tries taking advantage of Sylvia's innocence

House of the Scorpion Essay - Themes of Death

The House of the Scorpion – Theme Essay In the novel The House of the Scorpion, Nancy Farmer shows how death can be a reward or a punishment depending on your choices in life. In religion, it is believed that once you die your soul passes on to either Heaven or Hell based on your judgment while living. Similarly, in the novel, death is the driving force behind certain decision the characters make. In the novel The House of the Scorpion, Nancy Farmer shows that for the evil, death is often a punishment, while for the good it can be a reward, through the actions of El Patron, El Viejo and Tam Lin. Team Review - The Philadelphia Eagles

Everyone can agree that the Philadelphia Eagles had one of the most active offseasons under Head Coach and General Manager Chip Kelly. Chip is trying to mold the Eagles into his little superpower. He has a genius offensive scheme like no other in the NFL, a fast paced, no huddle scheme used to keep the defense confused and exhausted. But not all players are able to run such an offense and kelly spent all offseason ridding the team of any such players and adding big names that have excelled in similar schemes through college such as Sam Bradford and Demarco Murray. However even with these big name players, some fear that the Eagles won't have chemistry. Chip has done an exceptional job flipping the Eagles, especially over one offseason. It's incredibly hard to take a NFL team that was built up a certain way, strip it down and start building it the way you like it, especially with a 20th pick. But that's exactly what chip has done, he has made some controversial moves but that's to be e

The Concept of Fear

On a Saturday afternoon, some friends were watching a movie in a theatre. Suddenly, everything-including the movie screen, the chairs, and the wall-started shaking. The boys ran out of the theatre escaping the falling bricks and cracking walls. It was an earthquake. They run and feel the sudden leg shaking, lung-choking and heart pounding flow of emotions while looking for a safe place to save their lives. It was the fear that came on to them when they immediately realized ( looking at the falling, shaking and cracking walls) that it was an earthquake and that fear was the fear of death. I was one of the boys and that was my experience of the immense and gut wrenching fear. The unpleasant flow of emotions and feelings when we realize the danger, pain or threat from someone or something is called fear. There can be many reasons and causes of fear, but fear is experienced by each and every person in this whole world and it can be of any type. Any girl trying to walk through a dark alle

Movie Reflection: The Joy Luck Club

Minorities from all over the globe wishes to immigrate to North America hoping to find a better living situation, enhance education and ironically to live in a country where individual's mind and self are valued with no oppression and power struggles. Despite these wishes, the movie The Joy Luck Club, originally a novel written by Amy Tan raises the questions of oppression and power in the lives of four mothers and their daughters. The director, Wayne Wang is a Hong Kong-born American filmmaker, he was sent to America to study medicine, however, his eyes widened to new experiences and developed interest in film. Due to his background, he well portrayed the Chinese stereotypical characteristics (e.g., tiger mom, strict on their child and plays mahjong while gossiping) which well illustrates each character's hardship, oppression, power dynamics that they faced. The aim of the essay is to identify the oppression and power struggles depicted in both the first-generation mothers and the se

What I Learned from My Gray Hair

I was raised in a good family, I was taught that with age comes wisdom, I was taught to respect my elders and to say yes sir and no ma'am. I was taught to work half a day and during those twelve hours to give it my all, and at the end of the day, no matter what the outcome, to be proud of what I had accomplished. I was taught that the truth was the only way to go, and that trust was something you honored - and you only gave to people you knew could handle it. But the one thing I was never taught was how to deal with defeat. Gray hair taught me how to deal with defeat. I believe in gray hair. My life began April 9th 2000, on my tenth birthday. On that day my world came crashing down - everything I had been taught lost all meaning. On that fateful day, I lost my grandfather to cancer, I was told my parents were going to get a divorce, and found out that my mother had breast cancer. It was the end of the world. I was just waiting for the ground to start shaking. I had lived my life as I was taught and my walls still had come crashing down. I was looking for some place to run - anywhere I could go and get

Despair in the Poetry of Heinrich Heine and Ghalib

As I read the poems of Heinrich Heine and Ghalib, I was amazed how they use despair to stir the thoughts and feelings of the reader. At times, my emotions were at first lifted and then quickly let down by their writing style. In some poems, despair seemed to be all that there was for man. In other poems, despair was used to highlight the never-dying hope in man's soul. This paper will look at how both poets used despair in different ways to comment on life, death and the nature of man. Heine's poem "A Pine Is Standing Lonely" (Heine 616) symbolizes the despair that he sees in every man's life. The trees in this poem represent man in two completely different situations. A pine is standing lonely In the North on a plateau. He sleeps; a bright white blanket Enshrouds him in ice and snow. (1-4) In the first two lines, I sensed a calm and peaceful place. The tree sleeps and is covered by a blanket. Lines 3 and 4 made me start to see the despair in the tree's world. It is covered in

Cell Phones and Barriers to Social Connections

There have been many discussions over the question whether cell phones create barriers to social relationships. In this paper, I will propose the idea that mobile phones do not create barriers to social relations. I do agree that cell phones have become an essential part of our daily life, as they offer to us a number of advantages in terms of the ability to contact a person instantly and over long distance, sending text and graphic messages. Of course, we think that one or two phone conversation with a family member or a friend would be enough to satisfy one's needs to support our family or friends; however, none of the electronic devices can substitute the emotions and feelings you get from a real conversation. Greek philosopher, Aristotle stated, "Man is by nature a social animal"

The Comedic Evolution of Eddie Murphy

Strangely, Raw, Eddie Murphy's theatrical "stand-up special," does not start out with Eddie coming out to tell jokes. Raw starts out in a suburban house, with kids running around. A little boy looks to his mother and says "Mom, I got a joke to tell." The child's mother looks to her husband and family and tells them "shhh, little Eddie has a joke to tell." Eddie then stands right in the center of the room and starts to speak: "Once there was a lion and a monkey. The monkey said, 'I can make the weather change.' And the lion said, 'No, you can't.' So the monkey started climbing up the tree." The family smiles, not to let Eddie's confidence slip up, but also confused as to what the joke is. Eddie continues, "And then he started peeing on the lion's head. Now it's raining!" An older woman looks shocked. Eddie then flips positioning, with his butt stuck out to his entire watching family: "Then he started farting." Edd

The Scarlet Letter - Symbol of the Letter "A"

"The Scarlet Letter," by Nathaniel Hawthorne, is a novel in which a lonely woman, Hester Prynne, commits adultery with a preacher, Reverend Dimmesdale, while her husband is away. When leaders of the village learn of Hester's sin they punish her by forcing her to wear the letter "A" on her chest at all times so that everyone will know that she is an adulterer. Despite our initial negative perception of Hester, Hawthorne is able to adjust how we view Hester by incorporating times when the true symbolization of the "A" is positive. Hawthorne also allows the reader to analyze how Hester is able to further develop the meaning of the "A" by allowing us to compare her to Mr. Dimmesdale who, unlike Hester, only experiences the negative effects of the "A". In The Scarlet Letter, the "A" is intended to be a symbol of shame, but instead it gradually shifts to represent the fact that Hester is an asset to society because she exemplifies the only wa

Obesity: Who's to Blame?

The obesity epidemic has risen to frightening levels all across the nation and is continually growing. According to studies conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than one-third (34.9% or 78.6 million) of all adults in the United States are obese and children and adolescents aged 2-19 years have a 17% (12.7 million) rate of obesity. Diseases related to obesity such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and certain cancers are quickly rising and are the leading cause of preventable death. The estimated annual medical cost of obesity in the United States was $147 billion in the year 2008. There are many different opinions about what is causing the obesity problem. There have been different theories shown to society to solve the problem but there has not been much success. In this literature review, I will talk about several topics relating to the obesity epidemic in the United States and how the government should not be involved whatsoever in a perso

Concepts of Sacrifice in Night by Elie Wiesel

What do humans sacrifice when under such extreme duress as caused by the conditions of the concentration camps? Maslow's Hierarchy of Need theory shows the different levels of what a human loses if one level of needs is stripped from his or her life. Throughout book Night, by Elie Wiesel, the main character, as well as everyone around him, was stripped of all of these levels of needs, one by one, or sometimes even all at once, in the concentration and death camps. Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs is veritably the basis of what makes someone human. Their minds are so built to survival that they no longer act human. All that matters to them is to survive, and when all of these needs are taken away, a person is reduced to nothingness. The base of Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs pyramid is physiological: breathing, food, water, sex, sleep, homeostasis, and excretion. One of the most essential aspects of life is the ability to access food. Prisoners in Night were denied all possible access to food, and it drove them to starvation. "I was nothing but a body. Perhaps even

Oedipus vs Willy Loman

A literary tragic hero comes in different forms. In Oedipus the King by Sophocles, Oedipus was a mythological character who experienced intense personal battles since the day he was born. He was cursed at his birth from his ancestor's wrong doings. On the other hand, in Death of a Salesman by Arthur Miller, Willy worked towards his tragedy in a sense. Willy chose his own fate and he had the option to change his life for good. Willy Loman was a low-middle class working man who worked his whole life and ended up in tragedy; whereas Oedipus's tragedy was placed upon him at birth which ultimately made him work his whole life to try to counteract it. A tragic hero is one who evokes a feeling of pity or fear in the audience. Aristotle believed that any man of power can be a tragic hero, such as Oedipus. Oedipus was particularly tragic because he was cursed at birth. Aristotle's theory is supported by Oedipus the king because Oedipus shows that even those of high power experience fatal tragedy. Miller's theory of tragedy was the opposite of Aristotle's. Miller believ
