If I could get a good honest movie review from anyone, it's going to be Roger Ebert. In Roland Joffé's 1986 movie The Mission the film incorporates the fall of the Jesuit missions in the borderlands between Paraguay and Argentina in the mid-1700s. Spain and Portugal signed a treaty renegotiating a borderline between Spanish and Portuguese territories in South America, with Portugal taking control of a previously owned Spanish region on the Paraguay River. In this area were a number of mission communities, founded by the Jesuits, where thousands of native Guaranà converts lived. (Greydanus, 2002). These missions, known as reductions, which was a term of colonial hubris indica...

Stanley Kramer's Inherit the Wind (1960) is an adaptation of the play that explores the Scopes Monkey Trial (1925), in which two lawyers dispute the fate of the high school science teacher who had explained Darwins theory of human evolution to his students as opposed to the theory of creationism laid out in the Bible and Tennessee law. Instead of John Scopes, the movie uses the character of Bertram Cates as the schoolteacher. The action of following more modern ways then brings Cates much criticism, specifically from people like Reverend Jeremiah Brown, whose daughter Rachel becomes romantical...
Rocky is one of the most known sports films of all time. The film captures the audience's attention very well making this movie impossible to take their eyes off. I've seen Rocky plenty of times, but it was not until recently that I realized the meaning of this film went far beyond victory in sports. Struggling to make money, a poor boxer (Rocky Balboa) finally gets his shot at the big time when he is granted a title shot against Apollo Creed. Rocky's main motivation in the film is his own will. He is trying to go the full fifteen rounds with Apollo Creed for himself and no one else. He doesn'...
The Babadook is an Australian horror movie directed by Jennifer Kent. It follows the story of a single mother, Amelia, who is still struggling to get over the death of her husband. Her son, Samuel, is also causing her issues due to his behavioural problems. The film takes a dark turn as a supernatural being from a horror story she read to her son, 'The Babadook,' begins to plague her. The movie quickly establishes the broken relationship between mother and son through the distance between the two characters on the screen, they are often shown as being quite far away from each other, often...
"Sleepless in Seattle," written and directed by Nora Ephron, is one of the most unforgettable and popular romantic comedies ever put on film. With a sweet and sentimental story, and a number of references to the classic "An Affair to Remember," "Sleepless in Seattle" is always entertaining, no matter how many times one watches it. The film is about one's ability to finally move on after a lost love and allow himself to fall in love again, and a child who wants his family to be complete once more, and those must be among the most natural of all desires..Telling the story of Sam Baldwin (played ...
"According to the map, we've only gone four inches, " not only is this quote from the movie Dumb & Dumber (1994) funny but it makes the viewer want more. Take a moment and think about all the stupid choices you could possibly make in one day; when it comes to the end of the day you have a great story to tell your friends and family. So when we want to relate to something what better than to grab a comedy and some popcorn with some friends for a good laugh. Dumb & Dumber is a stupid movie, full of laughs, character, and love. Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels give the best comedic performance of all ...
Have you ever wondered how much of the Movie a knight's tale is real and unreal, well I have and in my opinion this movie was very unrealistic. There are a few reasons why this movie is unrealistic. One of them is the whole basis of the movie of how a knight's squire would just take his place after his death. Another would be how Sir William the squire that took the knights place in the film would actually think of breaking his social class to joust in tournament as a knight. But there are also many things the film depicts correctly. Those are just some of the reasons why I think this movie is...
I do not think "Apocalypse Now " is a horrible film but I did not like it. I think it is an amazing film with some of the most realistic war footage I have ever seen but I do not believe I can watch it again. The film was honest and raw but grueling to watch because of how graphic it was. From the very first scene to the very last I felt a sinking feeling in my gut and heaviness in my chest. The characters lingered in my mind as if I had known them personally and still I feel the weight of the film days later. I think this is exactly how Francis Ford Coppola wanted his audience to feel. I beli...
Road to Perdition allows you to feel, smell, and breathe the air of 1930s Chicago. I will be completely honest here. It is very hard for some movies to capture my attention. The only one that I really do remember was Road To Perdition. This may be because it touched home for me. At its heart, Road to Perdition is a little drama about fathers, sons, and the covenants they make and break. When I was only eight years old, just around the same age as the little boy in the movie, my father was taken from me. Before I found out that the father dies in the end of the movie, I was thinking to myself, ...
