The Soviet Union - 1922-1991

The collapse of the Soviet Union on Christmas Day of 1991 was a great disappointment to the hopes of many revolutionaries. But the question that flusters even the greatest of communist minds is: why did it collapse? The complicated situation boils down to the primary causes being political and economic and that it was a direct result of the military focused culture. As Joseph Stalin once said, "You cannot make a revolution with silk gloves." It can be said with reasonable evidence that one of the immediate causes of the collapse of the Soviet Union was economic unrest and peril. During the height of the Cold War (from the 1960s onward), the Soviets unfortunately lost the great race for arms with the West. The United States then took advantage of this situation and were able to profit from The Union's "imperialist exploitation of other countries,"2 while socialism only had an economic loss in that competition. By the end, the Soviet Ruble collapsed as the population

Surveillance in Europe

No matter on what reason, whether it is the supermarket boss installing small cameras to see what the employees are doing or the Ministry for State Security systematically monitoring all the people to make the existence of their regime possible, sometimes surveillance just goes into the wrong direction. The fact that most of us know about the NSA affair, but continue to use insecure and monitored online services states that we simply do not care enough to change something. Or are we just too lazy or too uninformed? Are security agencies working efficient? Or are they just looking through our Facebook chats and browser history? Surveillance is not a modern world problem. Even in Ancient Rome major political players had their own surveillance networks to provide them with information about the schemes of those in power. In fact, Caesar may have known about the conspiracy that culminated in his assassination. Even the best spy network sometimes cannot stop a dagger. But often the amount of information collected is too

Bolsheviks and the Russian Civil War

The Bolsheviks were able to win the civil war because the White Army, were made up of many independent groups and generals (there was poor communication between them), and the Bolsheviks had stronger armies, more advantages from the land and civilians, and the Bolsheviks had 3 amazing leaders to lead the way to victory. The Russian Civil War lasted from October 1917 to October 1922. At the very beginning, the Bolsheviks claimed the land of Petrograd, Moscow, and the area between the two cities. This was a great start for the Bolsheviks, knowing they captured the capital first. However, the Mensheviks, did not have a common leader throughout all of its armies, instead they had a variety of generals with varying amounts of experience. the Bolsheviks were able to easily win the civil war, because they had many advantages, versus the White Army, who was disorganized, disadvantaged, and had many enemies; rather than allies. The White Army had many disadvantages for their side. For one, t

My First Visit to Disneyworld

My first visit to Disney World was not just my first visit to; it was also McKenzie's, my seven year old daughter's and Oma's, my mother's first visit. My wife Carolina and I were waiting for our McKenzie to turn seven to take her to Disney. As some of you may know Disney trips can be costly so we wanted to make sure we got our monies worth by her remembering every single moment, after all Disney World is "where all dreams come true" All started by us driving four hours north from our hometown fort Lauderdale, FL to the Disney World city of Orlando, FL. McKenzie had no idea where we were going, she thought we were going shopping since Oma is obsessed with shopping and Orlando is also known for their amazing outlets. McKenzie was expecting four days of long walks at the multiple outlets, stopping at dozens of stores and just waiting for Carolina and Oma to get out and maybe sneak some food in. We made it to Orlando and off course went to the malls for a couple of ours; she

Juvenile Offenders as Adults

Martin Luther King Jr. once said, "I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character." This quote means that there should not be discrimination against anything. Throughout America, there have been many situations involving discrimination. Discrimination goes back all the way to the 18th century. Even though they made an act called the Equal Pay Act of 1963, people still discriminate against other people today (Remy). The differences between people that prompt discrimination in our society are gender, religion, and racism. First of all, gender is one difference between people that prompts discrimination in our society. According to the article "Dimensions of Gender Inequality & Its Impact

The story is told from Harry "Rabbit" Angstrom's perspective, although the narrator will occasionally tell the events from which they occur in other character's heads. The central themes prevalent in Rabbit, Run promote Updike's main argument. They embody Rabbit's journey for self-discovery. Throughout the story Updike utilizes fear to provide a sense of relief. Rabbit often finds himself in

Beauty is Skin Deep

In Western culture outer beauty may determine the value of a human being. The need for outer beauty and the stereotypical attributes of what "beauty" is, consumes the consumer. Flawless skin, long flowing hair and a face free of wrinkles and pores are characteristics desired by women. The need to look this way is influenced by "standards" of beauty that our culture and media have instilled in the female population. It I ingrained in the heads of women that looking a certain way is important to making them feel and act a specific way. If women don't look like the famous people in the magazines they feel as though they are less of a person. This is a problem in today's society because women need to keep their self-esteem high. They need to feel confident in who they are and not fall victim to stereotypes. When the female population, especially young teenage girls, get wrapped up in trying to be as pretty, thin and popular as the models in magazines they develop unhea

The Indus and Yellow River Civilizations

The Indus and Yellow River civilizations were not advanced at first, yet the economic structure throughout their culture had the SPRITE system. They farmed and used agriculture to their advantage which lead to new techniques in farming. The Yellow River's "Silk Road" was a big part of their agriculture. It expanded the population in China. Many people would travel on the Silk Road for trading purposes. This is mainly important because it made agriculture an immediate profit due to the rich and fertile soil. The Indus River Civilization ran along the Indus River. The Indus River provided flow of transportation for goods and trading. Without the River, there would have been a scarcity of water for humans, agriculture, and trade. The Yellow River Civilization put their focus mainly on day-to-day farming, such as growing crops like wheat, barley, and field peas. With all the time they had for farming, they could invent new techniques and styles of farming such as row crop, w

The Afghanistani Taliban

There are great differences since era that Taliban was governing the country till now. If someone asks me what your best memory of Taliban era is, I may say that I don't have any good memory. In Taliban era Afghanistan situation was in crisis. Although you were a human being, you didn't have your liberty. After Taliban was invaded, Afghanistan has developed in many ways such as: improvement in technology, improvement in economic, and improvement in education. One of the most obvious changes after Taliban era in Afghanistan is improvement in technology. If we talk about technology in Taliban era, there wasn't any technology. Although you had a radio, you couldn't hear any kind of music; always you should listen to the news, for it was banned by Taliban. Their broadcasts didn't last more than two or three hours in a day. Next if you wanted to become aware of your relatives whom were in foreign countries, you could just send them a letter. Sending letter wasn't easy, for you should have found someone who went to that country to take your letter there; maybe after a month you could be aware of your rel

Monotony in Synthetic Drama - Our Town

In Grover's Corner, New Hampshire, the families Webb and Gibbs live peaceful lives. Their destinies intersect with the one of the people who live close to them. The subject of the play is the town and the objective of the action is achieving full harmony. America and Mass Consumerism

The fact remains that while materialism may be the most shallow of the 20th century's various -isms, it has been the one that has ultimately triumphed" (Twichell, 1999). Many big ideas have battled over the centuries to dominate the planet. Countless wars, deaths, and conquests have arisen in the name of spreading religion. Inspired by the ideas of Karl Marx, Vladimir Lenin organized the Soviet Union in an attempt to convert the world to the ideals of communism. To the dismay of others, the United States constantly dwells in the plights of warring nations in an attempt to spread the ideas of democracy. All of these ideas have been unsuccessful, but there is one that has achieved total supremacy. Its compulsive attractions rob its followers of reason and good sense. It has created unsustainable inequalities, and is constantly scratching away at the very fabric of our society. At the heart of all these problems is mass consumerism.  Every day we consume. Everybody must find a way t

Gilgamesh and Achilles

What is a hero? Over time the word Hero has changed. In the time of Gilgamesh and Achilles, heroes were those who could fight a good battle, who had super strength and were able to win wars. Today, a hero can be a person who isn't divine, a strong warrior, or one that poses superhuman powers. Today, many people would say a Hero is a person who saves someone's life, is courage's, inspires others. My hero would be my father, who has always been strong, courage's, and so brave. He's my hero, because he's someone who has always risen to any challenge life ever gave him. A hero is someone who can overcome trials and difficulties throughout their journey. He came from a 3rd world country without knowing the language, having nothing more than 100 dollars in his pocket, risked it all so he's family can have a better life then he did. In he's journey came fear, trials, misfortunes and achieving goals. And he was able to overcome it all, with a strong will to fight for us and make life better

Dramatic Irony in Romeo and Juliet

Act 1 scene 5 in Romeo & Juliet shows lots of different moods, themes and events. This scene is also the scene in which Romeo first meet Juliet. This scene is split into six main events. It holds the audiences attention with its constant change of pace and tone. The scene starts off by showing the servants rushing and preparing for the party. Shakespeare gives them a funny name such as 'Potpan' and 'Grindstone' which is used to create slapstick comedy. In this event, the pace was fast and the mood was happy. This tells the audience that this is a happy and fun party. The second event in the scene was during the time before the party starts and Lord Capulet's welcoming his guests. This is also in a happy mood with a quite fast pace. The phrase 'Welcome, gentleman' shows that he is the host of the party and he is in charge of the party. In this phrase 'a hall, a hall, give room and foot it', he shows his power by encouraging everyone to be involved in the party. This tells the audience this is a happy event in the pla

Public Model of Canadian Health Care System

The Canadian health care system was founded on an egalitarian principle of shared values, and respect for individuals as ends in themselves. The idea of Medicare as a publicly funded, and equally shared health insurance system was established in Saskatchewan by premier Tommy Douglas in 1946. Initially administered to great success within the province, the provisions of Medicare were quickly assimilated at a federal level, and in 1957 became legislation under the Hospital Insurance and Diagnostic Services Act. This first step towards universal health care offered provincial governments a fifty percent reimbursement for programs adopted within the framework of the public model.i Conceived through an assessment of ethical and social responsibilities, Douglas' adamant support for Medicare was inspired by the democratic appeal for greater social justice initiatives. As explained in a 1961 interview when asked why government is best fit to deliver health care over private insurance companie

Final Research Paper - Aphra Behn

Aphra Behn is a complicated figure within English theatrical history. As the first woman in England to classify herself as a professional writer and playwright, she wrote to support herself and to prove a point during a time when women were deemed subordinate to men. She was a commoner among royals, revolting against the societal norms of her time with her vulgar, yet ingeniously crafty works. Behn's influence extends far beyond being just a writer of her time period; rather, she left a mark as a pillar of English literature. She was an adventurist, an abolitionist, feminist, and civil rights advocate who used pen and paper to reiterate her ideology, which is demonstrated through her novels, Oroonoko: or the Royal Slave and The Rover. Her works and the influences they cast prove Aphra Behn to be a dramatist worthy of the ranks of other famous British writers of this time period. Aphra Behn's life is marked by much uncertainty. There is little known about her early years and "ne

My Personal Philosophy of Education

After reviewing and dissecting my personal educational philosophy and where my truth is I am left desiring to define and shape my views. To say that I am married to a specific philosophy without any experience seems naive. I am left feeling tangential but yearning for self-definition simultaneously. Upon initial thought it was clear, so I thought, that my personal preference would have foundation in the facts and the truths derived from those facts. So a teacher-centric methodology would be congruent with these concepts in learning in theory. A framework and linear idea of facts, as in history, gives way to truths and subsequently gives way to the tenets of integral principles. These principles are life-long concepts and really do apply to everyone everywhere. They are perennial in nature. Personal development through core curriculum was most appealing to me during my development as a youth. My development as a learner was most engaged by a handful of history teachers who were passion

Police Officers and Suicide

Suicide is a heartfelt issue no matter where it strikes but it's also not a very popular topic in the law enforcement and police culture. Last year, 126 police officers ended their own lives, according to data released in August by a national study of police suicides performed by the Badge of Life, a Connecticut-based website run by active and retired police officers, medical professionals, and family members of suicide victims. According to Badge of Life, police officers commit suicide at a higher rate than those in other occupations, with the exception of military personnel. Suicides can happen in any profession, but they occur 1.5 times more frequently in law enforcement compared to the general population. Law enforcement officers kill themselves at a rate of 18/100,000 vs. 12/100,000 of the rest of the US.  Also, the actual rate is probably higher as law enforcement suicides are more likely to be underreported or misclassified as accidental deaths. This misclassification usuall

Prohibition and America - 1920s-30s

Thesis: The Prohibition had large negative effects on the social economics of America that far outweighed the positive effects. While the motives and ideals behind Prohibition were noble, it was an extreme failure and was only able to achieve one of its original set goals. Those who proposed the act thoroughly believed- or were deluded into presuming- that by banning alcohol in the United States, a long list of social woes would be rectified. They argued that by ridding America of alcohol, domestic abuse, crime, moral corruption, and poverty would end. This theory was untrue; however, they did manage to end to the excess intake of professionally manufactured liquor in American citizens. Frank Salamone, an American historian, reported that drinking was reduced "from 2.6 gallons (10 L) per person to 0.97 gallons (4 L) after prohibition" (Salamone). This does show an overall change in the habits of the American populous; therefore, the Prohibitionists, those who endorsed an

Animal Farm and the Red Empire

In the book "Animal Farm", George Orwell gives us insights into our society that we would not generally notice, by creating a fictional world. Utilizing the form of an animal fable, "Animal Farm" tells the story of a group of barnyard animals that revolt against their human master in an attempt to create a utopian state. However, power and greed caused their society's tragic downfall, as they end up repeating the cycle of human tyranny. The plot of Animal Farm follows the Russian Revolution. This is achieved by corresponding events in the novel to the actual events in Russian history. During the Russian revolution, Russian leader Joseph Stalin used secret police to 'get rid' of anyone who threatened his power. This is in fact also what happened to Stalin's main rival,

Founding Mothers of America

During the colonial era, the status and dominance of men overtook the roles women played when they demonstrated their strength, rights given to them over women, and inequality between the two genders. Despite the fallacy that only men in the colonial era fought tremendously to gain their independence, so did women. As men strived to create differences, change the country and most importantly aid America in becoming an independent nation, women of the colonial era did just as much to support their families and build a well- established entity. A very intriguing, intelligent, and one of the most influential founding mothers of America, Martha Washington, out shined the expectations of women by challenging herself to face any obstacles thrown at her without failure. In the novel, Founding Mothers, Cokie Roberts explicates the determination, strength and integrity of the First Lady by not only showing the hardships Martha Washington faced throughout the 1700's but also how she became one o
