Analysis on A Painful Case by James Joyce

James Joyce's famous collection, "the Dubliners", is a novel that "shows the emotional paralysis in the disillusion of love, fetters of marriage and obstacles in communication."1, among which 'A Painful Case' is one of the most impressive short stories. The protagonist, Mr. James Duffy, lived alone in a sombre house that was distant from the centre of Dublin, where he worked as a cashier. His life had been bland, routine, and monotonous, even to the degree of isolation, until he met a married woman, Mrs. Sinico, who became his intimate companion after several meetings. However, unfortunately, the woman died one day when she attempted to cross the line at Sydney Parade Station. After the incident, Mr. Duffy, having lost his only interlocutor, went back to its former dull state of life. Superficially, the story looks perfectly corresponding to the title --- a painful case, both for Mrs. Sinico and Mr. Duffy. Yet after a scrupulous analysis, I believe the whole n

The Competitive Business of Global Tourism

By its very nature, tourism is a global and intensely competitive industry. Although inherently vulnerable to economic crises, natural disasters and outbreaks of warfare and epidemics, international from the adverse effects of such negative, but short-term factors. However, not only does the consumer have to spend relatively large amount of his/her disposable income to buy the tourism product, he also perceives it in a subjective and experiential manner. As a result, tourism is highly sensitive to perceptions of danger and lack of safety and security. The lack of safety and security and incidences of crime represent a more serious threat to travel and tourism than any other negative factor. Safety and security are vital to providing quality in tourism. More than any other economic activity, the success or failure of a tourism destination depends on being able to provide a safe and secure environment for visitors. The hospitality industry has seen tremendous change over the last decade

Global Banking and Finance

A. What is a multinational corporation? Why do firms expand into other countries? Multi National Corporation (MNC) is business firm incorporated in one country that has production and sales operation in several other countries. The firm has its facilities and other assets and operating in at least one country other than its home. Such companies have offices and/or factories in different countries and usually have a centralized head office at the home country where they coordinate global management. Very large multinationals have budgets that exceed those of many small countries. The objective for a multinational corporation is a specific goal that the corporation wants to attain, and it must be something that managers can measure. Some common business objectives include maximizing profits, having high-quality customer service, growing at a specified rate, reaching a specific sales level, coming up with new products and acting socially responsible. Companies choose to invest in fo

Structures of Political Parties

A political party is defined as an organization that consists of individuals with a common body of principles and goals who attempt to gain control of government by winning elections. Political parties differ from interest groups in that the ultimate goal of an interest group is not to gain control of government but to influence government decisions. There is no mention of political parties in the U.S. Constitution. The founders originally had negative attitudes toward political parties. The basic structure of the two major parties in the United States, Democratic and Republican, is coalitional. It means that each party is made-up of subgroups that band together to win elections. Parties in Europe, as well as some third parties in the U.S., like the Libertarian Party, exhibit a structure that can be labeled ideological. It means that the party is formed based on a single or a set of narrowly related set of principles to which its members are expected to adhere. For political parties that emphasize ideology,

The Real Inspector Hound

Most plays have stage directions to guide the director and actors as well as readers. Comedies use repetition to make the audience laugh. Tom Stoppard's The Real Inspector Hound (1968) uses both stage directions and repetition in unusual and funny ways. In this play, different kinds of stage directions add to the humor, usually with repetitions that don't seem to make sense. Further, the stage directions go beyond what is necessary for performing the play. Some of the italicized words crack jokes for the reader, and sometimes what would usually be in the printed script is spoken aloud by characters. One of the characters, Mrs. Drudge, is a major source of this ridiculous repetition, as to what she says and the stage directions of what she does. The Real Inspector Hound is a really complicated play that needs to be read again and again to be fully understood. A reader can reread and compare the stage directions that connect the murder mystery at Muldoon Manor with the play about the the

Music and Early Childhood Development

As believed by many, "Early childhood is a period of critical intellectual growth and a critical time for perceiving and formulating ideas about the world" (Kalmar 1). The developing brain absorbs information like a sponge. Therefore, exposure to certain things at a young age or even before birth could affect a child in their teens or even into adulthood depending on the circumstances. This is especially apparent with music. Music can have amazingly beneficial effects on the brain. In children it can improve memory, reasoning skills, and be used as a tool to help with learning in a classroom setting. In addition to this, based on genre and lyrics, music can affect mood and behavior. Based on many studies and extensive scientific research the importance of the introduction of music to the developing mind is apparent. Even in the womb, at later stages, a baby has the same sensitivity to music. In the study "Prenatal Perception, Learning and Bonding", conducted in 199

Account for the Fall of Nicholas II

During the 1900s, Tsar Nicholas II ruled the largest empire in the world of 125 million people. This meant tremendous responsibility and pressure to maintain a balanced and comfortable life for the people of Russia. However, due to his poor decisions and leadership skills, there were numerous events such as Bloody Sunday and World War I that played a key role in the fall of Nicholas II and the Romanov family. Tsar Nicholas II was a firm believer in autocracy and orthodoxy due to the way his grandfather, Alexander II, ruled in the 1800s. This feeling of obligation to continue the inherited leadership caused colossal unrest within his empire. He approached the throne quite hesitantly, finding the position boring and too overwhelming. His educational background also encouraged him to think it was right to have unlimited power over the Russian people and expected unquestioned obedience. This personality and leadership led to the inadequate laws he implemented on his people, and it was his

Voting and Elections

Democracy is based on a participatory citizenry. The key to such participation is universal suffrage, which means the right to vote irrespective of one's national origin, gender, ethnic background, or race. Throughout the nineteenth century and a good part of the twentieth century Texas restricted the voting rights of many citizens. Legal devices to exclude people from voting included the white primary, which forbade African Americans from participation in the Democratic Party primary, and poll tax, which required voters to pay annually in order to register to vote. A combination of federal amendments, federal courts, and congressional action eliminated those restrictions. In order to vote today, one must fulfill two universal qualifications and several Texas imposed qualifications. The universal qualifications include being eighteen years of age and a U.S. citizen. Texas law requires a voter to be a resident of his/her county thirty days prior to the election and must be a registered

Elisa in The Chrysanthemums

In this story "The Chrysanthemums" there are many things you can get out of it. The thing that I grasped the most was that the story had the gift of portraying foresight. The story started off stating that the "high grey-flannel fog of winter closed off the Salinas Valley1 from the sky and from all the rest of the world" (paragraph 1 line 1) I believe that this is giving the readers the setting. It is giving the readers the idea of how this place might feel to one. Reading this quote gives me the feeling that they are limited and/or trapped to exploring different things. If the reader can get this feeling one can only imagine why Elisa, the main character, feels so frustrated. Elisa is portrayed as a very aloof and emotional character. Considering she lives on a farm with her husband and she does not have many visitors explains how she is so vulnerable and gullible. To top this off she is extremely passionate about the chrysanthemums. Readers can tell how enthrall

Concepts of Immigration Reform

Illegal immigration in Texas has been an ongoing issue for the past years with immigration laws still being discussed. To emigrate means to come into a country of which one is not a native for permanent residence. The United States is a nation founded by people who emigrated on the belief of freedom. The movement of the immigrants in the past was for a different purpose which was to attract urbanization and creating cities where there was once nothing. Texas is dealing with high percentages of unemployment and low income due to immigrants being competitive for labor at a lower rate or too many immigrants within a certain area. This creates lower wages for natural born citizens and rising levels of poverty. With immigrants coming in by the thousands every year, Texas is having a hard time dealing with the issues that are brought by immigrants. Immigration reform must be taken by allowing some, but not all immigrants to be allowed to live here if they are to abide and pursuit the actual

The Mentor in Me

I remember being a cheeky seventh-grader when the post of 'Mentor' was added to the Prefect Body-back in the year 2009. Abdullah bhai was the first in the list of many who came after-and yet to come, In Shaa Allah. I would not feel any shyness to declare that yes, he was an ideal-the main reason behind the idealization being the fact that his juniors could always contact him without any inhibitions, me myself being one of the many who would approach him quite frequently. Now before I proceed, there is some background that I want you to know. I joined Generation's in the fourth grade. My first year in the system was quite majestic. If this conjures up an image involving entourages or other similar stuff, it is not entirely wrong. Almost always I was surrounded by a bunch of students-of my own batch. But the majesty does not end here-the actual majesty lay in the fact that my fame spread throughout like Ebola, me becoming the most popular person in no time (a study contrary to my

Coming of Age in Mississippi by Anne Moody

Coming of Age in Mississippi, is heartbreaking story of Anne Moody's unbreakable spirit throughout the first nineteen years of her life. Anne writes about the unspeakable treatment that was socially imposed on African Americans, otherwise known as the Jim Crowe laws. Through the time of young ages she shares the difficult times and conditions and how she manages to strive to the best in school and provide for family. Contemplating in her own world separate from her family she continuously pondered upon the rules of society and always questions the rules of her elders. In Anne Moody's, Coming of Age in Mississippi she differentiates herself from the rest of African American by questioning the way of life she must undergo due to all the restrictions her family and other African American's that surround her. Throughout the novel Moody shows discontent with her family and fellow black citizens for simply accepting the circumstances and the position in which they lived. Toosweet, being a

The Unjustified Death Penalty

The death penalty has been a controversial topic within the realm of United States justice for centuries now. PHD scholar Hugo A. Bedau, author of "The Death Penalty in America", defines capital punishment is the lawful infliction of the death penalty. The death penalty is unjustified within the domain of the United States because of its failure as a deterrent to crime, its inherent unfairness, and its cruel usage. Although some argue that the death penalty serves as a vital deterrent to crime in America, state executions have no distinguishable effect on crime. Despite the abandonment of the death penalty by the rest of the western world, advocates for capital punishment such as New York Mayor Edward Koch assert the death penalty is a necessary component of a "society in which injustice is not tolerated" where "incidents of murder – will diminish" (Current Issues 484). However, there is little systematic research to support the claim that executio

Freestyle Calisthenics

Bruce Lee once stated, "Empty your mind, be formless, shapeless-like water. Now you put water into a cup, it becomes the cup, you put water into a bottle, it becomes the bottle, you put it in a teapot, and it becomes the teapot. Now water can flow or it can crash. Be water, my friend." Freestyle Calisthenics is like water. It is not just organized body weight movements, but instead it is a way to freely express yourself. Like water, it can be whatever it is on, in, or around. It has no smell, sound, color, or shape - just flow. When you hear calisthenics, you normally think of gymnastic exercises used to achieve bodily fitness and grace of movement. Push-ups, sit-ups, squats, lunges, jumping jacks, crunches, calf-raises, dips, flutter kicks, and planks are considered the sole manifestations of calisthenics. In the days of old this might hold true, but as all details in life evolution is just a matter of time and opportunity. Ancient Greeks called it kallos-sthenos, directly

Righteous Retribution Dressed in Red White and Blue

In a third-floor room at the Walsh Hall dormitory on the Boston College campus, two of my roommates scuffle over the right to wear an a American Flag. "A", a sophomore at BC, had the idea to wear the flag as a cape. Upon seeing "A" draped in the flag, fellow sophomore "N" demands that "A" return his flag so that he can wear it. "Of course I want to wear my flag; we got him!" yells "N". The "him" subject "N" refers to is Dzhokhar Tsarnaev. Tsarnaev is one of two "Marathon Monday" bombers whom had single-handedly shut down the city of Boston and several of its suburbs, within which Boston College is located, for nearly 24 hours, as a manhunt ensued after a shootout between bombers Jahar and Tamerlan Tsarnaev with the Boston Police force. The manhunt confined my roommates and I to our third floor dorm room, glued to a television tuned to Fox News, awaiting the imminent capture of Dzhokhar. The impos

We Need to Talk About an Injustice

Bryan Stevenson, speaker of this energizing speech, is a human right lawyer who has dedicated his career to helping the poor, the incarcerated and the condemned. In the speech his key message is the revelation of some harsh truths about the current justice system in America and the appeal for the audience to face and talk about them. Since he is a lawyer as well as an excellent orator, his logical and skillful organization, manipulative using of language, along with his sincere and extemporaneous delivery makes his message more impressive and persuasive. Organization & Persuasion Like every speech, this one has an introduction, body and conclusion. Bryan begins the speech by implying his occupation as a public-interest lawyer and telling a story. He says, "I spend most of my time in jails, in prisons, on death row. I spent" In this way, he raises the audience's interest and establishes his credibility for the later discussion on the topic. And then through the story of his grandmother's influence on him, he brings up an important concept in this speech-identity, demonstra

Everyone Needs Friends

Everyone needs a friend. Friends are one of the most crucial factors to living a happy life. Humans, by nature, are social animals and instinctively seek companionship. These are the people we open up too; they ones who we express our deepest fears too, who we tell about our dreams, our secrets, and our past too. These are the people we call friends. Friends, while quite pleasant, are sometimes hard to find. There are a lot of "fake friends" that are only there to use people, so knowing how to make friends is an essential part of life. Real friends are hard to come by but there are numerous steps to take in order to obtain them, some of which are as followed; (1) be a friend: if your acquaintance needs help or a shoulder to cry on, be there, (2) be trustworthy: don't betray confidential information. People seek those they can trust, and (3) listen and ask questions: let others know that you value what they have to say. People, no matter how hard they try to hide it, are sensitive creatures that seek companion

Hunting with My Family

Ever since I was a small boy I have grown up around my family and their friends hunting in Idaho. All the time they would tell stories about their trips and they always ended in their successes or at least them having a blast. So with each fulfilled story I heard the more excited I got to hunt in Idaho as soon as I could. When I turned 9 my parents finally let me take hunters safety. The class lasted about 2 weeks and as soon as I passed it I was ready to hunt. A month after I actually drew a spring bear hunt in Washington and I got my bear the second weekend it was open. But that wasn't enough for me. I was so excited to start hunting in Idaho. So when the Idaho deer season opened he promised to take me. When he bought his licensed I was so disappointed when he didn't buy mine but I didn't understand that you had to be twelve to hunt there. But when I finally understood that I decided I still wanted to go with him. And in the end I was very glad that I did. I hadn't and probably ever go on a more fun trip in my life. We ended up hunting Big Canyon. Each day we were out we

Sex Dichotomy and Social Structure

Unschooling - A New Type of School

A new form of homeschooling is gradually taking root in the United States. As against 'typical' homeschooling, where parents play the role of teachers, unschooling is an approach where children have the freedom to choose what they will study. These days, people tend to separate unschooling from typical homeschooling, but there really isn't much difference. There is no typical homeschooling. As long as the child is schooled at home and does not attend mass compulsory education, it is home schooling. Unschooling, undoubtedly has had some success stories, but there exists some concerns and fears that still hasn't been answered. Exploration, as a concept is vast. When children are left to explore at an early age, there is always the danger of exposing them to issues and conditions that their still-developing minds might not be able to handle. How does a child begin to fathom what he wants to be, when he barely even knows who he is? Children need a long time to decide on their future. During that time, the importance of the te

War Famine and Partition in Agunpakhi

Abstract: Agunpakhi is the debut novel of Hasan Azizul Huq, a professor of philosophy and a leading short story writer of Bangladesh. In this novel Hasan employs a strong female voice to narrate the epic-scale tragic story of a single family and the bloody partition of the Indian sub-continent from the protagonist's first person point of view. In this work-in-progress paper it will be tried to show how this masterpiece of Hasan has captured and portrayed the lives of three successive generations with masterly stroke and how the partition of India split and destroyed the psyche, emotion, feelings and values of an individual and how the mindset of a people got fanatic and lunatic to have vengeance against the opponent community over the cause of religion where religious harmony and coexistence had prevailed from the very dawn of civilization. Agunpakhi shows us how millions of people-Hindus and Muslims - lost their home and were bound to leave their home losing their identity for good

Social Penetration Theory

Throughout the course of our life we encounter many people and communicate with many. Some of these relationships can have lasting impacts and some can just be temporary. There are levels and stages to how we develop relationships and to the extent of how we maintain them. One theory that introduces use to this idea is the "Social Penetration Theory". The Social Penetration Theory is a theory developed to explain the difference in communication in relation to the depth of interpersonal relationships. This theory was developed in 1973, by psychologists Irwin Altman, and Dalmas Taylor. Their theory states, Relationships begin to deepen through self-disclosure. For example, in the beginning people establish relationships by disclosing simple or harmless facts through small talk. This could be like introducing yourself to a coworker on your new job, or starting a conversation with someone at a business meeting. Over time when you feel more acquainted with someone and your relationship
