The Lottery - SymbolismA way to link families and generations together is significant in small towns. Shirley Jackson points out the appreciation and respect that people have for their traditions. She writes that the villagers don't really have an answer of when the tradition started, but they try to preserve the tradition as much as possible. In, "The Lottery," traditions form the community's real life actions, even though the villagers' forgot the meaning of the tradition. The lottery itself represents unquestioned traditions and rituals that managed their society. It symbolizes many of our social problems that we blindly continue even though they are outdated. The villagers fully believe in, "Lottery in June, corn be heavy soon" because it ensures them a good harvest later that year. The lottery is an example of what can happen when traditions are not questioned or addressed critically by new generations. The result of this tradition is that everyone becomes obligated to murder on an |

The Renaissance Art MovementThe Renaissance was basically a resurrection of cultural knowledge and learning that occurred in Europe during the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. Hence, when it occurred, a restoration of the classical forms that were originally started by the ancient Greeks and Romans and new social and conceptual developments, like an attraction to humanism and a renewed idea of the significance of the individual, began (Salisbury 346). As a result, there would be a complete transformation in the nature of art. People would begin to think of art as a method of expression rather than a profession or line of work; it would become appreciated not just as a means for religious and social identity, but more as a way of personal expression. All of this intense level of artistic activity would also lead to advances in the theories and techniques of art. Early Renaissance artists would seek to create art forms in line with their experience of human personality and behavior. In addition, they would als |

Sports and Performance Enhancing DrugsIs it acceptable to take credit for talent that isn't yours? Chafet argues that the use of enhancement drugs among professional sports players is acceptable. Many baseball players use these performance enhancer drugs for various reasons. It is never okay for these professional players to utilize performance enhancements. Chafet also argues that enhancers are not harmful to the game. When in reality it is not only cheating, it is also wrong. There are many baseball players out there that are talented that don't use enhancements. It seems as if all the players that use enhancement drugs get the spot light, for example "this weeks report that Sammy Sosa tested positive for performance enhancement drugsthe latest in a long string of revelations." Facing Peer Pressure'Oh look, those are the new jeans everyone are buying, hey do you want to get high, smoke this.' Have you ever been in a situation like this, where you just purchased an item or said yes to something that you feel regretful for just to fit in with other people? If you have then you have gone through the social anxieties of peer pressure. Peer pressure is a challenge many of us face in our everyday lives. Peer pressure socially influences us to act similar to our peers. Because we can be influenced, we are also consciously conforming to the ways of the group. Many of us give into peer pressure because we want to be accepted.Peer pressure can drastically affect a teenager's decision-making, well-being and academic performance. Teenagers undergo severe internal conflict as their decision making abilities are hindered by their surroundings. As I learned in my sociology class an experiment conducted by Stanley milgram In this experiment, Milgram found that most people will do what they are |

From Colonies to Nations - Struggle for IndependenceFrom Colonies to Nations: The Struggle for Independence Many Latin American colonies gained their independence from colonial control early in the early 1800s. The political structure and way of leading the countries then, were structured mainly by the Enlightenment. Because of the rise of the Industrial Revolution and the capitalism that was being placed onto Latin American nations this led to their economic dependency on other countries. Laurent Dubois illustrates the impoverishment that followed the uprising in his book Haiti: The Aftershocks of History. He writes about the security imposed by the French rulers and how it left the country in a continuous cycle of debt. Although Dubois does not refer to the Haitian leaders as caudillos, there were still many leaders of the slave rebellion who had the characteristics of a political leader. The events of the Haitian Revolution helped re-shape the country from the political system they had before, and it introduced new leaders who would |

Power, Polarity and Stability in International RelationsThe purpose of this essay is to talk about balance of power in the international scene where polarity plays an important role. It is necessary first to understand what is balance of power, and what constitute a polarized international arena. In the article A Political Science Perspective on the Balance of Power and the Concert, the author Robert Jervis (1992:717) states, "The growth of a nation's power, if it becomes great enough to menace other strong states, will be at least partially self-defeating; the attempt to dominate the international system will call up a counter-balancing coalition that will restrain the state. According to balance of power theory, restraint and stability are not goals of national leaders but are by-products of the pursuit of narrow self-interest."1 Polarity is defined by how the power is distributed in the international scenario. There are three main ways in which one can classify the distribution of power in the international arena, a unipolar, |

Culture Paper - The Māoris of New ZealandI come from the land of the long white cloud and I am proud to be Māori, the natives of New Zealand. Facial expressions are a big part of my culture. We use the 'pukana' a fierce look staring wildly with dilated eyes as an expression to show your inner spirit being released. It can be frightening and both female and males use these facial expressions while we do our performing arts (Kapa Haka). Males are allowed to stick their tongue out while the woman is not. Because of customs within our culture, women are sacred and are limited to doing things that men aren't depending on which tribe you come from. I grew up performing my culture through Kapa Haka as a little girl and doing the pukana was a norm. It impacts my life in a way that defines me. As a culture, we believe that there is one main God, but then there are sub-gods if thats how you would describe it in English. We are very spiritual people who are rich in song, dance, carving, and weaving. One belief I'm going to share |

The Walmart You Don't KnowIn the article, "The Walmart You Don't Know" by Charles Fishman tries to show how American Walmart's get their products and are still able to sell it for low prices. Even though Walmart is the biggest convenience store people argue that Walmart get product sold in stores from outside of the country. Walmart got away from the way it used to make its own product to having other countries do it for them. Walmart is getting away with selling items such as Vlasic Pickles and making themselves richer from outside help and it shouldn't be that way. In the article Fishman executed the perfect scare tactic to terrify American consumers. Fishman starts off catching the audience's attention by talking about the gallon size of pickles and how they are able to sell them for less than the original price. Creators of Vlasic pickles Frank Vlasic was upset that Walmart was selling them at such low prices it was like they were just giving them away. It talks about bow Walmart is not just the world's largest retailer it is also the biggest company, bigger than general motors and general electric. Walmart also makes up to $244.5 million dollars in sales for their |

Teaching Without a Text Book"It is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent, but the one most responsive to change," said John F. Kennedy. Change is dynamic and inevitable, and ironically the one thing which is constant in life. Still man is forever wary of it. We are not ready to accept any kind of change without some amount of opposition. When ABC announced at the beginning of its academic year 2006-2007, that text books would not be followed in the primary school, many an eyebrows were raised. A few skeptical smirks also came our way. Few thought it was not a good idea. While many forward thinking, enthusiastic parents applauded this welcome change. To teach without text books seemed like a daunting task. One was a little nervous initially as to whether this would work. We were open minded enough to comprehend that it would not fail altogether as it was not an experiment being trie |

The Roman ColosseumA massively built stone amphitheater, the Roman Colosseum, known as the Colosseum, is located on the eastern side of the Roman Forum (History.com Staff). The Colosseum, also referred to as the Flavian Amphitheatre, is a significant structure built in Rome. The Roman Colosseum was built as a site for magnificent celebrations, spectacular sporting events, and violent bloodshed. (History.com Staff). The arena also hosted other events of entertainment for the public such as the executions of humans, fights between gladiators, and hunts for wild animals (Cartwright). Built during the first century CE, the structure of the Colosseum, a magnificent ellipsoid amphitheater, was commissioned by Emperor Vespasian and completed under two other emperors who were of the Flavian dynasty: Titus and Domitian (Cartwright). Conclusions about Kingdom of ArmorikaTotal Export & Import Volume As the kingdom has more exports i.e. $98 billion as compared to its imports i.e. $91 billion. This shows that the country's balance of trade is in surplus. The country rely more on its own resources and products. People are willing to buy the products that are produced in their own country rather than buying imported products. Therefore it is facilitative for the company to start its business in this kingdom as people will buy more of their home country products. The international competition is reduced. This shows that government also appreciates the home production. Therefore if the company requires any finance or other resources the government will support it. GDP The GDP rate is an |

According to Lenin, the ordinary citizens do not understand their own interest; they are incapable of making the correct choices that will lead toward to communism. Argument for the Existence of GodPart I One of the topics discussed in class earlier in the semester that really stuck out to me was the existence of God. I feel as though, this topic in general, the topic of whether God does or does not exist, is not black and white (as in concrete), but instead contains a lot of "gray area." By that I mean people are very opinionated to this subject due to the simple fact that there are different beliefs, and no one belief can be considered right or wrong because there is some level of faith involved. According to dictionary.com, faith is defined as "confidence or trust in a person or thing, belief that is not based on proof, and belief in God or in the doctrines or teachings of religion." Now most people have heard of 'monotheists', which are those who believe in one god such as Christians, Muslims, and Jews, as well as atheists, who are those who lack belief in gods. But there are also people who believe in many gods, such as Hindus and Wiccans, called p |

The Human Spirit - Visual AnalysisCan a picture of a sculpture capture the essence of the human spirit? The sculpture in the photograph was created by Lincoln Fox and carries the name "The Strength of One". It was given to Pinellas Baptist Church in 1993 by the Bass Fisherman of America during a world famous bass tournament. At first glance, the sculpture is that of a physically stronger man helping a weaker man. With deeper analysis of the details, one can see the elusive qualities of the spirit captured in physical form. The strength of the larger man is captured in a few different ways in the sculpture. The first of these is the physical placement of the larger man above the smaller individual. The next can be seen in the muscle definition of both individuals, with the larger man displaying much larger defined muscles. The strength of the larger man is most notably s |

Bereavement, Loss and GriefSummary Death is inevitable and universal, therefore, it is necessary for anyone who works with students to be prepared to offer help to those who experience bereavement naturally, suddenly, or traumatically. Indeed, help is sometimes required in advance of bereavement, in that a student may be 'anticipating' the death of a significant person in their life (e.g., parent in hospice care). It is estimated that between 36,000 and 60,000 young people in Ireland have experienced a significant bereavement (McLoughlin, 2012). As the role of the Guidance Counsellor is pivotal in supporting students who have been bereaved, as well as their peers and the rest of the school community, this chapter provides a review of the salient information that is useful to a Guidance Counsellor in their planning to provide immediate and on-going support. The chapter begins with a discussion of the definitional differences between types of bereavement and followed by an overview of the theoretical fou |

Gothic Literature and ReligionThe Christian attachment to Gothic emerged from its connection to Gothic and Gothic Revivalist architecture, though from the nineteenth century the Romantics gave an appraisal of Christianity that differed from its previous depiction. As Minghui said, '...Gothic authors themselves questioned the relevance of religion, foregrounded issues on scientific antitheism by presenting Christianity in a dubious light, present, but altogether powerless...'2 A late Romantic example of this exists in the Gothic novel Melmoth the Wanderer (1820) by Charles Maturin, a narrative that suggested an argument for social change in early nineteenth century Britain, reproving Roman Catholicism in favour of the virtues of Protestantism. The instability of theology offered Gothic Literature the confidence to query the supremacy of religion in text, for example in The Monk, where there is, according to critic David Stephens '...in effect a conflation of Roman Catholicism and blind superstition.'3 Both here and |

The Normalcy of HomosexualityHollis Stacy once said that "I think people feel threatened by homosexuality. The problem isn't about gay people, the problem is about the attitude towards gay people. People think that all gays are Hannibal Lecters [serial killer]. But gay people are sons and daughters, politicians and doctors, American heroes and daughters of American heroes." Homosexuality has become a much bigger deal in the 21st century with regard to whether or not they have the right to marry or even if they are normal humans. Many believe that homosexuality is "immoral and unnatural" according to procon.org. However homosexuals are in fact people and they deserve the same respect as heterosexuals. There are different ways to show respect: respecting them for their decisions, giving them the right to marry whom they want, or treating them like the rest of the family. Some homosexuals are able to have the support from their family, but many are treated like they do not even exist. Some view h |

Living with RoommatesIn my experiences, living with roommates has been both good and bad. Going into freshman year of college I didn't know what to expect with living with someone I did not know. After all I have only lived with my family and had my own room for almost 19 years. My hopes were that I would have a few things in common with him like being a tidy person, sleeping in a cool, quiet room, and that overall we both could respect our differences. In that first year my hopes for a good roommate became a reality. Neither of us watched much television so our homework and sleeping patterns weren't affected by constant noise and flashing lights. We took to splitting the room in half, though neither one of us claimed one half or the other and we kept our side cleaned up and free of clothes and trash. We both just understood each other and figured out what annoyed us without ever really talking about it. I had a very good experience living with someone I did not know for the first time and we had a good ti |

Child Development Case StudyKathleen is the daughter of nineteen-year-old Lauren, who is a single parent. Kathleen is five years old and an only child. Her mother is concerned that her verbal skills are not as well developed as those of other children of her age at the care center. Lauren left home to live with her grandmother after learning that she was pregnant. Although her grandmother was supportive to her, Lauren eventually dropped out of school and sought employment as a server at a nearby McDonald's cafe in order to provide for her daughter. However, her relationship with her grandmother deteriorated, leading to her moving out to live on her own. Lauren recently enrolled Kathleen in a daycare center from where she learned of her daughter's verbal skill deficiency. Although Lauren expresses that her daughter has grown normally in all other aspects of development, her parental involvement with her daughter's learning may be associated with the poorly developed verbal skills. This case study focuses on the co |

The World-View of the Christian MindMelvin Green John McCloud GENE 100 Making of the Christian Mind 14 January 2015 A worldview is exactly what it sounds like. It is how we filter everything we see and experience in the world around us. When you take everything away and get down to the core of a worldview, it comes down to one of two types: Biblical or non-biblical. When you think of worldview a few things come to mind such as how the universe started, what happens after we die, and what our purpose on Earth is. All these things can be viewed in different aspects depending on whether or not it is a non-biblical view versus a Biblical view. Worldview is how we filter the world around us. Everything we see and experience gets filtered through it. It can contain the answers that we tend to ask ourselves in different situations. A Biblical worldview means that you filter everything through the Bible. Biblical worldview starts with God. It is a Christ centered outlook that is biblically based. You understand that the bible is the living word of God, and that Jesus died to save you. John 14:6 Jesus answered, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me." |

Abstract The project involves discovering how temperature affects crime activity in Vancouver. This has been done by collecting and analyzing data on average monthly temperature and the number of cases of four selected crimes in Vancouver, which are sexual offences, robbery, theft of motor vehicle (theft of MV) as well as breaking and entering (B&E). Based on an analysis of 2014 monthly data from Vancouver, this project finds that four selected crime activities are likely to be impacted by the temperature changing. According to data examination, positive relationships have been found between temperature and a number of cases of sexual offences, robbery, and theft of a motor vehicle; a negative relationship came up between temperatures and a number of cases of breaking and entering. Freedom to Be OurselvesFreedom. If you look up the definition of freedom it defines many things that I believe in. The word freedom is an umbrella that covers many aspects of life. It showers me with many emotions that I feel strongly about. We as human beings deserve the freedom to choose. The freedom of choice is a broad subject so I will be basing my feelings and opinion for this subject of what I have experienced. Everyone is entitled to have the freedom to choose ones path in life, make decisions and to express who they are. I'm very privileged to have the freedom of choice in the country I live in. When I have traveled abroad I have witnessed first hand that not all individuals have freedom. Whether it be, the choice of a career, the way you dress, the way you speak, or the way you live, if you do not have freedom, you are limiting your potential as a human being and not be able to explore your interests and live the way you would like to choose. How did I formulate such strong opinions of freedom at the age off 22? It's been due to the exposure that my parents have enlightened me that not everyone lives free. From a very young age my family exposed me to traveling internationally, mostly t |
