Mother Tongue and Memoir of Bilingual ChildhoodThe Essay "Mother Tongue" by Amy Tan and "A memoir of Bilingual Childhood" by Richard Rodriguez tell personal childhood experiences of both authors. The authors discuss the language they speak at home and the language of the people they migrated to. Because these two authors grew up in immigrant families they had hard times in their lives using different languages at home and in public. Richard Rodriguez struggles to overcome the difference between his family language, Spanish and the American language, English. Amy Tan, on the other hand has problems with different forms of Englishes. The "broken" English of her mother and her excellent English. In both essays there is the point of private language and public language. Each writer explains in different form in their essays. At15 he was a well rounded painter. He was inspired early on by the city of Paris, where he became inspired by the sketchy style of works by Manet, Gustave Courbet and Toulouse-Lautrec. For the next 5 years, he began moving forth and back between France and Spain as France gave him so much inspiration during his time spent there. In his life he went through many phases and styles including realism, caricature, but more significantly the Blue period and Rose period. One of the most significa |

The Myth of Computers in the ClassroomIn the world of today, computers are commonly known as a godsend that enhances the learning process by allowing one to complete a task in a short amount of time and maybe even have fun while doing it, but have people taken the learning process for granted by depending on computers too much? Are computers' new teaching methods such as Hypermedia, and multimedia making the learning process too quick by avoiding what really matters in the proper teaching method? The overuse of the computer may be associated with lowering the abilities such as math skills of its users. The author David Gelernter in this article Unplugged: The Myth of computers in the classroom believes so and has several supporting facts to back his beliefs. Gelernter's article succeeds in its attempt to persuade the reader, but also seems indifferent about the topic of weather computers should take a permanent place in the learning process. Altogether this indifference is a flaw that could consequentially cause Gelernter's readers to become confused and unsur |

Advertising - Using Sex to SellIt is quite common for a young woman to flip through a consumer magazine or turn on the television and find provocative images of beautiful women, and men, in revealing outfits selling a wide range of branded goods. Sexual imagery, varying from modest to the obscene, is used throughout much of the commercial advertising in today's social media. According to Branding Strategy Insider, "Sexual information does grab attention. Sex evokes a hardwired emotional response that is linked to species survival" (Daye). In the advertising world, employing sexual imagery is an effective means to draw attention to a product. However, the marketing industry must be wary of images that traditionalize or stereotype male-female gender roles. The above advertisement is a good example of an advertisement that uses sexual imagery to draw attention to a product. The above image shows two women holding two different food bars. Both women are of similar height, ethnicity and hair color. The di |

Florence Kelley - Child Labor SpeechFlorence Kelley was a reformer fighting against child labor. Kelley delivered a speech at a National American Woman Suffrage Association convention in 1905 speaking against unfair child labor. The speech contained a bounty of logos and pathos, strong diction, exemplification, and compelling rhetorical questions. The Speech starts with statistics. Kelley talks about the "two million children under the age of sixteen years" who work most of their days away. She makes the reader feel guilty by addressing the children as "little girls" in the third paragraph; this is Kelley's style - begin with logos, end with pathos. Logos are scattered throughout the speech; statistics about wages, hours a child can work, average age of children working. These |

Surprise and Emperor by HaydnDuring the 1700s, there were two kinds of people: people who were music enthusiasts and people who were more or less indifferent to it. During this era, the concert halls were more of a location for a social gathering and for conversation. For the people with wealth and are able to attend these musical events, "a concert was an opportunity to see and be seen, wish all the inevitable consequences for ostentatious finery and social intrigue." (McVeigh, pg.60) Music was abundant and people would be exposed to music in the taverns, ballrooms, private apartments, palaces, etc. As a result, there were people who were particularly sincere in their love and interest of music, and these music enthusiasts spent their free time in composing music. For example, Vienna's small upper middle class generally played and composed music instead of paying professional musicians to play for them. (Rice, pg. 211) The Viennese who were music enthusiasts were more likely to be part of and to partic |

Phases of the MoonWhen we were first asked about our opinion as to why the moon appears in different phases, I honestly had no clue what the correct answer was. I knew that it had something to do with the moon's orbit around the Earth but besides that I was completely uninformed of how it all works. So, I made an educated guess and said that I thought the reason the moon appears in phases is because the moon orbits the Earth and while it orbits only certain parts of it's face are shown due to the shadows created. Although my answer was not completely inaccurate, the way I described it was not the correct way and I soon learned that after sitting through lecture, reading about it in the textbook, and completing the at-home activity. The common misconception that I shared with a lot of people, as discovered by the NASA website, was that "phases of the moon are caused by shadows from the Earth, clouds, or the Earth's or Moon's rotation". After learning more about what really happens in regard t |

The Spread of BuddhismThe spread of Buddhism was due to its no cast system so when it reached China people took to this new religion. Not everyone liked Buddhism because it wasn't from China and didn't respect their personal history as a nation. Though Buddhism was viewed in many different ways in China the spread of Buddhism reached and affected everyone. Additional documents are ones from a women's perspective from both upper and lower class to see one what their opinions were and to also with the difference of classes how they viewed Buddhism. This would be interesting because of Buddhism no cast system and even though there wasn't really a cast system in China there was a social hierarchy. Also a document from someone from the lower middle class like a merchant whom this religion was targeted to and how they felt about the spread. All of the documents provided where either written by a scholar, the emperor, and Buddha so there is no other perspective than an intellectual. It seems like some of the more high up officials and or scholars were not a fan of the spread of Buddhism because; they believed that barba |

Characters in The Merchant of VeniceGratiano is a good friend of Antonio and Bassanio. Contrary to the gloomy, solemn and so unduly silent Antonio, "peevish" as described by Gratiano, Gratiano himself appears to be the more cheerful and upbeat individual. He is a very admirable subordinate character, who does not mind being the jester among his friends. Then again, one speech of his which starts with the line "Let me play the fool", in his own defense, contains a whole volume of wisdom which is unlikely surprising as it comes from someone who initially appears nonchalant and carefree from the start of the play. During his speech, there are several literary devices used in the speech to clearly reflect Gratiano's playful personality. For example rhetorical question ¬and oxymoron is being used as seen in "Why should a man whose blood is warm within Sit like his grandsire cut in alabaster, Sleep when he wakes, and creep into the jaundice By being peevish?" Gratiano's i |

History and the Civil Rights MovementIntroduction In the 1950's and 1960's the Civil Rights Movement was a popular movement to end segregation amongst blacks and whites and for the black population to earn equal rights. During that era black lives really did not matter and they felt as if they did not belong. Blacks were tired of being mistreated and constantly having no rights. Therefore they wanted to take a stand by campaigning their rights and showing that they wanted to belong and have the same rights as the white folks. This paper will discuss the roots of the Civil Rights Movement, leaders that affected the Civil Rights Movement, and laws that influenced the Civil Rights Movement. Background Slavery was one of the dominant reason why the Civil Rights Movement was founded. In 1619 the first set of slaves were shipped to Jamestown, Virginia (Ford, C. T., 2015). These slaves were all from Africa, and over time slavery increased. As time went by the abolitionist movement had begun and caused an issue between t |

The Basics of CancerAbstract Cancer is a disease caused by normal cells changing so that they grow in an uncontrolled way. The uncontrolled growth causes a lump called a tumour to form. There are over 200 different types of cancer because there are over 200 different types of body cells. For example, cells that make up the lungs can cause a lung cancer. This review highlights the Hallmarks of Cancer, with Apoptosis and Metastasis & tissue invasion coming under particular scrutiny. Apoptosis has a crucial role to play in maintenance of bodily health and is one of the many areas currently being examined in order to develop new cancer treatments. Although the determinants of Metastasis are not completely understood there are several theories being developed in order to gain further insight and develop new drugs to suppress the process for example, the alterations of CAMs. The p53 protein is crucial in multicellular organisms, where it regulates the cell cycle and, thus, functions as a tumor suppressor. Poetry Analysis - London by William BlakeIn the poem "London", Blake describes the scene he saw when he wandered through the streets of London and comments on his observations. At the time, Britain had been capitalism for centuries, and the society became more decayed as the time past. This poem is noticeably religious and political. I am going to analyze the whole poem, and throughout the process, I will illustrate how is each important to understanding how this poem works. In the first two lines, "I wander thro' each charter'd street, near where the charter'd Thames does flow" (Blake, "London" 1). The word "chartered" means that a street or a river was owned by rich people and nobles only instead of common people. A word reveals a political class oppression and a hierarchical society that people were divided into several levels and not every individual had the equal rights. It suggests the oppressive nature of early capitalism. Moreover, this repetition of this word reinforces a sens |

Short Story - The Fiery Start to SummerA life could flash in the blink of an eye; any moment of the day, the unexpected could happen. On May 24, 2012, my life changed forever. May 24 began as a normal day for me. I was in school, my fourth period. I was a teacher's assistant for Mrs. Withers, she taught a freshman level course, Earth and Environmental Sciences. I was called out of class and told to go to the office; in this moment I had no idea why. My mind raced as I walked down the stairs. One of my friends stopped me asking if I was okay and hugged me. At that moment I was the most confused person in the school. As I walked into the office I saw my mother and sister were sitting and waiting for me. As I saw their worried faces, I too began to grow more and more nervous. They sat me down and told me my father had been involved in a terrible incident with an explosion at the stadium. The explosion burned over forty percent of his body, mainly his face, arms, legs, and other parts of the body not re |

Fifty Degrees of Dissapointment"I scowl with frustration at myself in the mirror" (James 3). The opening line of Fifty Shades of Grey could be considered as anticipation of what the audience will encounter along the story. The book Fifty Shades of Grey by Erika Leonard James is the first of a trilogy that has been labeled by most of the critic as a low quality literary work. However, it enjoys an extremely large and enthusiastic audience. The rawness and immediacy in the presentation of sexual content allow the target reader to engage easily with the plot. While the simple structure of the prose does not convey any subtle or nuanced meaning to the story. Yet, what results even scarier is the fact that the habituation to patriarchal patterns in the cultural industry makes those situations reflecting gender violence in the book go unnoticed by the audience. The Wall Street Journal referred to Fifty Shades of Grey in 2013 as: "one of the fastest-selling book series in recent memory, () and this year' |

An Overview of Teen PregnancyIn America, we as free citizens enjoy many luxuries that the majority of other countries throughout the world do not have. With a developed economy, a leading position in many professional fields, and a reputation of being known as the land of opportunity, America is quite desirable to foreigners, which is why we have such a large number of immigrants that want to become citizens in the U.S. However, there are many social issues that people are not aware of that are affecting our economy, our growth as a nation, and our youth's future. One of these pressing issues of today is the rate of teenage pregnancy. Teenage pregnancy is not something that just comes out of nowhere. When you look at countries such as The Netherlands that are developed just like the United States and have the same amount of sexually active youth, it is natural to ask yourself this question- of the youth that are sexually active, why are more becoming pregnant in the United States than in The Netherlands? Goals and Motivation for High School StudentsHigh school students can be motivated to complete their classes successfully by placing more value on evaluation of learning goals rather performance goal (grades). When a student is evaluated or assessed based on reaching a learning goal instead of grades only, they are more successful. The student completes the course of study with a sense of accomplishment and pride. Motivation is the combination of these three factors; desire, values, and beliefs, which drives you to take action. One of the ways to motivate a high school student and keep them motivated through a task is to use the three factors to establish realistic goals (University of Iowa, 2015). Goal setting is a method of motivating students because simply having a particular end target to aim for may propel students to work harder. Students can be motivated by either setting performance goals or learning goals. Performance goal is the most commonly used to assess student achievement. This goal setting is a tool that is appr |

Learning Guitar - One String at a TimeOver the course of several hours during a weekend, with many high's and low's in between, I learned the basics of playing the guitar. Since I can remember, I've always wanted to learn how to play the Guitar, and when I realized I had the opportunity to teach myself, I couldn't resist. The sound of the Guitar in an epic Guitar solo leaves me feeling mesmerized, so I thought to myself what's better than feeling mesmerized is by mesmerizing others. I've seen and heard many of my friend's play, which only led me to want to learn to play more. Lots of my favorite bands have well known guitarists such as: Jon Bon Jovi who is the lead guitarist of Bon Jovi, Dan Reynolds and Andrew Beck from Imagine Dragons. These three Guitarists only fed my hunger to learn to play. My parents were both really supportive of the choice I made as well to learn, so the only thing left for me to do was to get a guitar and begin learning! I started off by purchasing an electric guitar and an amplifier. I really like how electric guitars sound, so I |

Genetic Engineering and the EnvironmentSkyler Moak WRIT 102 Professor Kellye Makamson March 28, 2015 Effects of Genetic Engineering on the Environment Genetic engineering is a processes that is used in multiple ways across the globe. Genetic engineering forcibly modifies or changes a plant's genes in a particular way that could not happen naturally. Genes can be inserted into major food crops such as rice, corn, wheat, and potatoes. This changes their genetic make up and causes them to be resistant to diseases and pests. These genes can even cause crops to withstand the freezing temperatures, heat, droughts, and other hostile conditions. Genetic modification also allows scientists to modify a plant so that it has the same traits that other plants have, such as greater leaf area or even a different color. It can also prevent a plant from manifesting certain genes. This process has become a highly controversial topic within the last decade. Gregor Mendel was the first person to ever experiment with this process. He |

Kids and Too Much TVNowadays, television has become so important to us that we haven't noticed all the changes it has made in our lives. It can now be considered as part of our lifestyle. It is now so popular, that today we can watch all kind of programs without a problem, making us think that all of these programs are good for us; which is why we can no longer difference which one are really good and which ones are not. It is so common so see people watching television that we cannot see the danger in this activity, especially for the kids who are still growing and developing their skills. The problem with television is that while we watch it, we forget to socialize with other people; it can have an influence on us, by making un more aggressive or even have a change on our physical, because it can increase the chances of someone becoming obese; and definitely, it makes us procrastinate. Kids shouldn't watch television, because they can have a lack on social skills, become aggressive and have poor academi |

Native Americans During the American RevolutionAmerican Revolution of 1765-1783 was one of the most important events in the U.S. history. Its outcome was foundation of the United States of America. Relationship between the Native Americans and the colonists, which later founded the U.S., were different in different time periods. Initially, colonists and Native Americans were cooperating together, however, as colonies expanded into Native American land, conflicts arose that resulted into full-blown confrontations. During American Revolution, Native Americans sided with both the British, and colonists, but were seen as enemies. When revolution ended with the victory of the U.S. and the defeat of the British, Native Americans were seen as defeated enemy, and were treated accordingly. The United States and War with Meixco"Although most Americans believed in Manifest Destiny, few could agree on exactly which land the U.S was supposed to govern." these words written by Charles W. Carey Jr. shows me how unjustified United States was when it went to war with Mexico. Another thing that the quotes tells us is that even though most people believed in manifest destiny, only some could agree on the land that United States was supposed to govern, and this belief was how the Mexican-American War happened which was a war that United States wasn't justified in going to. The Mexican- American War(1846-1848) also known as the U.S Invasion in Mexico was an armed conflict between the United States and Mexico. The main reason the war happened was because in 1845 when the United States annexed Texas, which Mexico considered their land even though Texas was independent from Mexico in 1836 after the Texas Revolution. But in my opinion, to the Question "Was the United States Justified in Going to War with Mex |

Story Plot - A&PWe tend to think of heroes as imaginary super-heroes with super powers, or the heroes we find everyday in our police stations, fire stations, schools and homes, or those special people who have a vision for the way the world should be when it comes to caring for others. In the A&P Plot and Harrison Bergeron, the main characters are classified as heroes because of their willingness to defy the authorities around them, as well as their willingness to strike out on their own instead of adhering to social norms; whether it is the store manager Lengel in A&P or the Handicapper General in Harrison Bergeron. In these two stories, two separately unique young heroes emerge with the hopes for glory. The hero of "A&P" is Sammy, the anxious checkout clerk storyteller, and the other hero is Harrison Bergeron, the intellectually and physically advantaged boy for whom the story bears its name. The two characters attempt heroism and generate interestingly different outcomes based on thei |
