Water Pollution in China

Water pollution problem is becoming more urgent than ever for the Chinese, because vertiginous growth has a direct negative impact on water sources almost all over the country. There are ninety percent of household sewage in China is released into rivers and lakes without being treated, and nearly eighty percent of China's cities (278 of them) have no sewage treatment facilities and few have plans to build and underground water supplies in ninety percent of the cites are contaminated [CITATION Jef08 l 1033 ]. Hence what is happening with the water source in China! What are the causes of this severe pollution? How it affects Chinese's health, and Whether or not there are optimal solutions to solve this? In this essay, I will explore these questions and to give an overview of water pollution issue in China. The first culprit to mention in the cause of water pollution is industrial waste. Chinese industry produces over 3.5 million tons of sewage waste per day including mainly chemical factories, drug manufacture, tanneries, paper millsto treat just half that amount they would need to invest in 10,000 trea

Short Story - Hallows Eve Love

One Hallows Eve at the annual Halloween Party there was a "Minion" and a "Seahawk" that locked eyes. They were in disguise and attracted at first sight. The night was long the time was good, dancing, talking and learning each other's lives. The connection was unbearable and the feelings were mutual. Not to long after midnight it was time for the Seahawk to make her way home. Unfortunately, the identity was a mystery and she left worried she would never know who the minion of her dreams was. Crying herself to sleep that night, letting true love slip through her fingers she awoke with a new outlook that if it was meant to be he would find a way to make contact. She continued on her day to day schedule and a week had gone by no contact was made. She began to lose hope. Just then a letter came in the mail addressed to the Seahawk, she had a small chuckle and opened it. The letter read: "To the Seahawk that made my night, you are an amazing person and I can't get you off my mind. I searched high and low for ways to contact you in hopes that we could reconnect. I feel like t

Socrates and the Fear of Death

Socrates maintains that death is not something we should fear, and presents several arguments for his position. He insists that since no one can be absolutely sure of what awaits us after we die, we cannot rationally fear death without seeming ignorant. He is so confident in his belief that even as he is about to die, he had no fear whatsoever. I feel, however, that his arguments against fearing death are not sound as they are based on his personal opinions and not on facts. In the Apology of Socrates, he says that 'To fear death, gentlemen, is no other than to think oneself wise when one is not, to think one knows what one does not know. No one knows whether death may not be the greatest of all blessings for a man, yet men fear it as if they knew that it is the greatest of evils. And surely it is the most blameworthy ignorance to believe that one knows what one does not know.' If we were to analyse this more closely, we would see that Socrates makes three arguments which leads to a co

Irresponsible Leaders in Lord of the Flies

Irum Shah Mr. Jury ENG2D1 Wednesday June 17, 2015 Consequences Caused By Irresponsible Leaders A leader is very important for the success of a group. If a leader fails to steer its people in the right direction, it can deter the group's ability to function and bring undesirable outcomes. This can be seen with Ralph and Jack, the two leaders in William Golding's Lord of the Flies. When leaders ignore their task to maintain order, their actions impair the group's ability to work. Additionally, when the person in charge disregards their responsibility to preserve hope, it weakens the group's capability to function. Furthermore, when superiors neglect their duty of being a positive role model, their behaviour undermines the group's ability to operate. When leaders ignore their responsibilities, their actions undermine the group's ability to function. When leaders ignore their responsibility to maintain hope, it weakens the group's ability to function. In order for someone to rescue the

Hydrogen as a Possible Fuel Source

Hydrogen as a possible fuel sources is an idea that has been researched for years. Many scientists are conducting research to find ways to properly extract, transport and use hydrogen efficiently for the world as an alternative fuel source to help lower the greenhouse effect on the atmosphere. From the sources used during my research on hydrogen fuel as a source, the authors of the articles took different approaches on ways to implement and manipulate hydrogen so it can be helpful to the environment rather than being adversely harmful. The articles about hydrogen fuel took approaches from many perspectives: health and wellness from improving the quality of the air, the dangerous hazards of hydrogen, the role of hydrogen in California's economy, and efficient ways to extract hydrogen using renewable energy. The common aspect that these articles use is the knowledge of hydrogen being a possible fuel source for cars in the future to lower the greenhouse effect but from different perspect

The Depths of Surfacing

The psychologically thrilling and mystifying novel, Surfacing is a complex story that revolves around a nameless female narrator that has come back to the abandoned home of her childhood which is located on an island off the shores of a remote Quebec village. The novel takes place in the early 70's and the protagonist struggles with what her parents, friends, lovers and society expect her to be. Along her journey back home, to find her missing father, she begins to find clues of her past which help her identify who she was and who she will become. Surfacing explores remarkable themes that are hidden beneath words that are carefully woven together; Margret Atwood exposes readers to the reality of appearances, degradation of women and the journey of finding ones self. She also leaves deep and meaningful symbols such as a dead heron, the Americans and an engagement ring, for readers to interpret.   Throughout the novel there has been a sense that things are not always what they seem. In the beginning of the novel we are led to believe that narrator was once married and had a child, but after the split the child began living wi

The Chernobyl Disaster

Imagine living in a town of thirteen thousand people and being a part of an event so historic and so dangerous from the 1980's that is still being felt until today, that displaced more than one hundred and fifteen thousand people were displaced from their homes and never allowed back to the places that they've could have lived in for multiple generations. Well, that's what the people of Chernobyl, part of the old Soviet Union that is now known as Ukraine, and other surrounding areas had to go through as a result of a terrible nuclear explosion in April of 1986. Accoring to Greenpeace.org the events that led up to the failure of the 4th reactor at Chernobyl was: "The operating crew was planning to test whether the turbines could produce sufficient energy to keep the coolant pumps running in the event of a loss of power until the emergency diesel generator was activated. To prevent any interruptions to the power of the reactor, the safety systems were deliberately switched off. To conduc

Advantages/Disadvantages of Organic Foods

Abstract Nowadays, many people have interested in organic products. "Organic products" are the food produced without chemical pesticides and fertilizers and labeled organically by meeting the standards from USDA. This research paper shows that organically grown food does not have more advantages than non-organic food grown in a conventional way. Organic food contains fewer pesticide residues than non-organic food. However, it is not 100 percent free of pesticides and threatened by dangerous bacteria like E. coli. Next, organic food is not more nutritious than conventional food because studies show there is little nutritious difference between them. Also, organic food does not have better impact for the environment than conventional food does since too much spending on land use causes "widespread deforestation and biodiversity loss" (Journal Nature), which are truly harmful for the environment. Moreover, "Better taste" is also not an appropriate reason to

Peeta Mellark in The Hunger Games

Recently, I read a book named The Hunger Games in my leisure time, which tells a story about a cruel competition hold by Panem country, and the governor would pick up one boy and one girl in each district to join this game on Reaping Day every year. The main male character, whose name is Peeta Mellark, is my favorite person in the story. He is the son of a baker, and he is also chosen to be a tribute with Katniss. In my opinion, Peeta is a kind-hearted, sagacious, and self-sacrifice person in this story. First of all, Peeta is a kind- hearted person who never asks return from others. He lives in a better life than Katniss, and does not need to worry about the hunger because his father sells bread in District 12. He is eager to help other poor people even if he would be punished by his mother. When Katniss is so tired, weak and hungry that she slides down a tree to wait the coming of death, Peeta cooks two burned breads designedly, and throws them to Katniss, which is described by "The boy took one look back to the bakery as i

In The Heart of the Sea

In The Heart of The Sea: The Tragedy of the Whaleship Essex by Nathaniel Philbrick, a story depicting a whaling ship from Nantucket Island, Massachusetts that was stuck down by a gigantic sperm whale. Most people in America are not aware that this tragedy had ever even occurred. Although, this was one of the most horrendous events ever in American history. Philbrick's entire purpose for this novel was to expose America to the frightening story that sparked one of the most well-known adult classics, Herman Melville's, Moby Dick. The story, while in most part it was dry and to say the least, boring, when the dramatic events occurred, it left chills going down my spine. The whaleship Essex, truly was a tragedy and Philbrick did an extraordinary job of depicting the horrors that the ship endured. The story takes place in Nantucket Island, Massachusetts, at the time the whaling capital of the world. The island's population consisted of mainly Quakers who believed that God granted them dominion over the fish of the sea. Nantucket w

Religious Belief Systems

Abstract This paper hopes to explain the distinctions between a religious belief system and a secular belief system. Within a religious belief system I will describe person, objects, time and or space telling how those things fit in a religious belief system dating back to ancient Rome to the modern day Christianity. In this paper I will hope to answer two fundamental questions, (1) Describe these sacred-like qualities. (2) what is lacking in these things that prevents them from being truly sacred, according to the definition of the sacred in the Cunningham and Kelsay Text. After reading and examining the scared meaning of a religious belief system and the differences between secular belief systems I can draw from many examples in my life and not just only from my work place. Honestly, I have not worked in a place that drew any comparisons either to a religious belief system or a secular belief system. I have worked with many individuals that had their own belief system, customs and

Stasiland and the German Democratic Republic

Taking place in the years before and after the collapse of the Berlin Wall, Anna Funder's creative non-fiction, Stasiland, explores the lasting influence of the Stasi, the secret police of the ironically named, German Democratic Republic (G.D.R). Funder emphasises her fascination with understanding how people deal with the past, as Anna interviews a myriad of people affected by the GDR, structured as a series of vignettes redolent of pieces of a puzzle as Funder reconstructs 'history'. In her polyvocal writing, Funder juxtaposes investigative journalism with personal narrative, employing novelist techniques in order to reconstruct 'history'. While finding a vast majority of Germans she encounters are unwilling to look back on this part of their history, Anna also discovers there is a profound confusion as to whether it is more beneficial to "remember or to forget", in order to move on. For some, the past is their present, the GDR is still dominating their minds,

Parapsychology Theories of Rupert Sheldrake

Rupert Sheldrake, a parapsychology researcher, proposed in 1994 a list of Seven Experiments That Could Change The World. His beliefs were that human beings possessed a type of sixth sense and that ordinary people could conduct their own research with a do-it yourself type guide to assist them. His basic argument is that the mind does not just exist inside and within the brain, but that it is stretched outside the human body Sheldrake 2002). In this essay, I will focus primarily on one of Sheldrake's seven phenomena: psychic staring. Through an examination of Sheldrake's theory, and opposing arguments made by Baker, Marks and Colwell, with included researched facts from both sides, there is no question that many people do commonly experience odd and difficult to explain sensations however there is a lack of evidence to support that these experiences prove a human sixth sense. Far from paranormal, experiences such as a prickly feeling on the back of our neck or being startled by answeri

Race, Justice and Freedom in America

On the first day of this class, I thought that I knew a lot on this particular subject; Race, Justice and Freedom in America. Racism, segregation, bigotry, prejudice these were all of the catch phrases that essentially in my circle of people that I associate with on a daily basis were and are the proverbial white elephant in the room. Everyone knows that they are there but the opinions on to what degree they exist are quite drastically varying. This notion is quite alarming to me, because I have wrongly assumed that because most of the people with whom I grew up with and associate with at this time all resemble me and come from similar backgrounds, but their reactions to these terms and how they are perceived in the media are vastly different from my experience. As I noted in class, I have two beautiful daughters who are bi-racial. If you ask me, they are Kayla and Kaitlyn. But, to make my point clear, if you ask society, they are considered "Black". Why is that? Is that ho

Cost Containment and Obesity Prevention

Obesity represents an important public health issue and negatively influences the healthcare economics. Excess weight harms human health in many ways: obese people definitely have higher risk of some chronic diseases such as type 2 diabetes, coronary heart disease and stroke, high blood pressure and obesity-related cancer. Therefore, obesity growth is undoubtedly a significant burden of economics and society. This journal looked at the estimated current annual cost for obesity and its related disease in United States, range from $147 billion to nearly $210 billion, along with annually $43 billion indirect costs, which means, "resources forgone as a result of a health condition." As predicted by 2030 in this journal, there could be between $390 billion and $580 billion annually losing in economic productivity due to obesity growth. Subsequently, the journal also concretely showed why containing these costs matters. Obesity leads to higher healthcare costs for both adults (41% hig

Fear in The Crucible

Humans have always had an instinct to react with fear to certain situation and in certain ways. This is a primal emotion exists to keep us alive and avoid danger. In the play, "The Crucible," by Arthur Miller we see this emotion come up in many different characters throughout the play-in some more than others and have a great impact on the thoughts and actions of each character. Through these said character, the play emits the notion that fear causes people to react differently in situations, act upon your barbaric instincts, and make rash decisions. One character that we see fear have an impact on them is Deputy Governor Danforth. When Danforth is first introduced we can see how he is a calm and reasonable person, taking all evidence that is provided into consideration. Then as the play progresses we can see how slowly Danforth starts to get frustrated and more angered by everything that is said to him, for exa

Water - From Fountains to Bottles

Remember those days back in elementary school when we would drink free water from drinking fountains during breaks? We would wait in a long line with our friends gossiping about who has a crush on who; just to take a few sips of fresh cold water. It feels like those days have long past, and now we are in the age of the water bottle. Water bottles are something that everyone uses and sells, from babies to athletes, from gas stations to restaurants. We use bottles for going to the gym or when we go on a trip. But as your drinking that tall bottle of Smart Water or Dasani have you ever actually wondered where that water came from or how that plastic bottle was made? Water is a resource that we shouldn't take for granted and we should question whether the plastic water bottle we are drinking from is safe, or cleaner than tap water, and if it's convenience is worth all of it's hazards to the environment. People often buy bottled water is because it is easily accessible, has a refreshingly

Organizational Structure of Starbucks

Starbucks started out as a small coffee house in Seattle Washington in 1971, established by three men who believed in good coffee. In 1981, they brought in Howard Shultz as director of marketing and retail stores (Wilma, 2004). Schultz had a vision that extended far beyond the roasting of coffee beans and purchased the company from the founders in 1987. Shultz succeeded and surpassed his vision by establishing a functional organizational structure that allowed for rapid growth of the company while maintaining his concept. Organizational Structure Starbucks organizational structure is a traditional functional structure. A functional organizational structure is one in which the organizations guidelines are followed to the letter. They have definitive levels of authority for each level of management (Irani, 2013). Starbucks has a vertical flow, with all of the specific departments ultimately being accountable to the CEO, Howard Shultz. This structure has allowed the company to maintain

Moving Forward with Nuclear Energy

The world's natural resources are being consumed at an alarming rate. As these resources diminish, people will be looking for alternative sources which generate electricity. Advances in nuclear energy have given us a practical alternative which has several advantages. However, many people are concerned about the potential risks associated with energy. Is it worth the risks? Nuclear energy involves low carbon dioxide emissions and is relatively "clean". By not producing greenhouse gases, it does not contribute to global warming. It also does not contribute to other forms of pollution like acid rain and produces a smaller amount of waste compared to fossil fuels. Nuclear energy also has the capacity to produce large amounts of energy

The Plumpy'nut Controversy

Introduction Nutriset is a French company that has patented the formula for Plumpy'nut. Plumpy'nut was created to combat malnutrition in children in under developed countries. It is a ready to eat peanut butter paste, packed with vitamins and minerals. Nearly half of all child deaths worldwide are contributed to malnutrition (Child Malnutrition). Plumpy'nut provides a source of vitamins desperately needed worldwide for undernourished children. Nutriset's main facility is in France, but has franchises in other countries where malnutrition runs rampant. Nutriset facilities provide nourishment for 1-2 million children, but its capacity does not reach all of the 925 million undernourished children around the world (BMGT 496 6381 Business Ethics (2148)). Facts Summary UNICEF is the primary retailer of Plumpy'nut, purchasing about 90% of Nutriset's production from France. Other facilities produce Plumpy'nut locally with locally grown produce, while also providing a source of em

The Great Mississippi River Flood of 1927

The great Mississippi river flood of 1927 was a devastating disaster, according to www.britannica.com/event/mississippi-river-flood-of-1927 the flood took place in lower Mississippi on 1927. It was a historical moment known as "one of the most natural disasters in history, more than 23,000 square miles was submerged under water leaving 250 people dead. Leading up to this event it had been raining heavily prior to the flood causing the levee to break and collapse causing some residential areas to be 30 feet underwater. When this happened African Americans were called upon on to work on the rebuilding process. When the Mississippi river flood of 1927 happened many lost whatever they had such as their houses or belongings it was time where people needed a boost and help. Many blues songs were made specifically about the Mississippi river flood of 1927. According to "soundchec

Violence in Venezuela

There is always a solution to everything in this world. But to always pick fighting over just solving it in a calmer manner seems to be the only solution. We all want to live in a peaceful world where there is no violence at all. Unfortunately, that can never be done because there will always be something like a misunderstanding that will screw it up. Power is one of the reasons why many countries go to war. Power happens to be the motivation to all of this. Then, comes money which is also another reason why countries or people go to war. Another reason why many people fight is because of human rights and freedom and that is why Venezuela is fighting for, for once in for all to have freedom. For the past fourteen years, a guy named by Hugo Rafael Chavez Frias turned what used to be a great and beautiful country to live in into one of the most dangerous countries in the world. He took everything from the Venezuelans. He took the freedom of the people to walk in peace through the streets

The April Witch by Ray Bradbury

As I've grown older, I've argued with myself with what love is and why we fall in love. Is it because love is an innate feeling that we express for people like our family and friends? Or is love something that we express in actions and words, or rather, something that develops over time? We know that love often leads to loss, heartbreak, and unexplainable pain; so why would we try and find someone to love and in turn, someone to love us? Along with these complex questions, I've wondered if love in any state is a selfless act that compels us to put others before ourselves or if it is actually a selfish and egotistic pretense to mask our own problems. "The April Witch" by Ray Bradbury explores a multitude of questions that pop up when it comes to the perplexing puzzle that is love and more specifically, if the act of love is actually selfless or selfish.  Selfishness is a quality that we actively apply to and identify in others, but if we, ourselves, are labeled as "selfish" we rej

The Topic of Depression

Knives, guns, drugs, depression? What is the link between these? They all have the potential to inflict pain and harm to a human being? Suicide in North America is the third leading cause of death among adolescents and is estimated by the National Institute for Mental Health (NIMH) that 8 of every 100,000 teenagers commit suicide and this is an increasing phenomena. It is believed that 90% of those that attempted or committed suicide suffer from Depression or Schizophrenia. I chose this topic of Teenage depression and suicide because it was of great mystery to me how a seeming normal El Dorado East student took his own life in 2008 without much being know to friends and even family. I narrowed my investigation into the topic of depression by identifying two main contributing factors: Hormonal changes and High stress levels. The two factors were thoroughly researched and delivered by two credible veteran psychology teacher and coach, Dr. Arch Hart and his daughter Dr. Catherine Hart in their book "Is your teen stressed or depressed?". Dr. Nisha Jackson, a practitioner of depression diagnostics in her boo
