But Cinderella is not just one story; more than 500 versions have been found, and it seems almost every culture has it's own. In each version the differences can vary dramatically, from satanic rituals and passages of extreme violence, to descriptions of beauty and kindness. It's easy to see how fairytales are changed to match cultural beliefs and morals. For instance, some may object to the Cinderella in Lee Tanith's version "When the Clock Strikes," who's mother has "sworn allegiance to satanas" [558]. The Nature of Belonging

Belonging is a complex/multifaceted and universal concept so deeply rooted in the human psyche that our fulfillment depends on our connection to people and place. Throughout our lives, everyone faces the need to belong and so straddles the dichotomous nature of belonging encompassing (surrounding) acceptance and alienation. This dichotomy is explored in Peter Skrynecki's poems "Migrant Hostel" and "Feliks Skyrznecki" as well as Hayao Miyazaki's film Spirited Away. Mental Illness in Short Stories

In many of the stories we have read in class, the theme of mental illness has been present. We see a man who kills another man for seemingly no reason, a victim of depression becoming infatuated and obsessed over a supposed woman in a wall, and we witness an elderly woman having a mental break from reality. Mental illnesses, at the times of these stories being published, were not very well understood and made them fascinating and disturbing to the readers. In Edgar Allen Poe's The Cask of Amontillado, the narrator, Montressor, lures a man named Fortunado down into his family's crypt to kill him. The reason for this is never but we are told from Montressor, "The thousand injuries of Fortunato I had borne as I best could, but when he ventured upon insult I vowed revenge" (Poe, Paragraph 1). This character could certainly be considered mentally unstable, but at the same time he is very composed during the whole ordeal. He knows exactly how to lure Fortunado down into the crypt and strokes his ego in order to keep him moving on. Edger Allen Poe, at the start of his writing career, went to New York City where he had some of his poetry published. He submitted stories to a number of magazines and they were all rejected. Poe had no friends, no job, and he was in financial trouble. In 1835, Poe finally took a job as an editor of a newspaper because of a contest he won with his story, "The Manuscript Found in a Bottle." Then in 1843, he wrote, "The Tell-Tale Heart." and in 1850, "The Oval Portrait." These two stories are short stories. Poe's writing is notable due to his use of visual elements, darkness and light and horrific style. The narrator makes both stories easily understandable through his use of visual elements.
