Media Bias and the Crimean Crisis

Russia's seizing of Crimea has sparked international tensions between Russia and the west, which has led to many to suspect a new Cold War is around the corner. This direct action has been compared to Russia's covert actions towards the Ukraine crisis, has given cause for other nations to suspect his motives and possible Geostrategic intent in extending to the Baltic States. As a result, their respective governments have influenced international media, some outwardly giving talking points that form a narrative of a Russia vs. the west conflict, which is on the edge of propaganda. Though there are slight differences in coverage between the media of the United States of America, and the Russian Federation with regard to the actions involving Crimea. First in the United States in opposition to President Barack Obama's actions regarding Ukraine, the Washington Post seems to hold a Neoconservative perspective. In the Washington Post, Obama is portrayed as a weak leader who is unknowledgeab

Causes of Air Pollution in Mexico City

Half a century ago the metropolitan area of Mexico City had a population of less than three million people. Mexico City serves as the nation capital of Mexico, but beyond that, it also serves as the industrial and financial heart of the country as well. By the year 2000, the city had grown from a population of three million to one of eighteen million, making it the second largest city in the world behind Tokyo. A swell in population of this magnitude was bound to be accompanied by additional problems, one of which was an increase in air pollution. Since this time, the air quality in the city has improved, but not to the extent that it even meets its own standards for air quality most of the time. In 2002, Mexico City air quality exceeded local standards (110 parts per billion, or ppb) on 80% of the days of the year. There are other cities, though, with higher population, massive industry, or both, such as Tokyo and Los Angeles that do not have the levels of air pollution that Mexico Ci

Les Fleurs du Mal and Frankenstein

Frankenstein (1817) by Mary Shelley and Les Fleurs du Mal (1957) by Charles Baudelaire can both be considered timeless in the eyes of contemporary society as they both discuss social issues that continue to be significant today. Traditional gender roles and the role of religion in society are both topics that have sparked societal debate for centuries, and this is evident in the two texts. In said texts the composers both depict women as beautiful and important, however they are characterised in two opposing lights. Similarly, the role of religion in society is discussed in both texts, yet the two composers' opinions contrast. The arguments and opinions expressed by these two composers can be seen throughout present-day society despite their age, so they can most definitely be considered timeless. In both texts, the composers discuss the role of women in society, depicting them as beautiful and important yet characterising them in differing lights. This shows that both authors have an

The Bangladesh Telecommunications Sector

INTRODUCTION Marketers have recognized that the target audiences of a certain product are not all alike. They differ in terms of demographics, attitudes, needs, location and social affiliations. Most markets are made up of different individual customers, sub-markets or segments. Segmentation and targeting of customers allows the marketer to deliver a product within the target audience needs and wants (Pickton and Broderick, 2005: 373). It is a necessity to establish the needs and values of the target customers within each segment, in order for companies to promote their products, brands or services appropriately. In order for marketers to design the right marketing strategy it is necessary for the marketer to have a great knowledge about the needs and wants. By following the segmentation process the marketer will achieve the necessary knowledge and thereby be able to design a persuasive and appropriate marketing strategy. The aim of this thesis is to understand the segmentation proces

Universalism, Annihilationism and Conscious Punishment

Abstract Benjamin Franklin stated "In this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes."1 If death is certain, why do so many fear it? Is it our uncertainty of what lies beyond the grave? Is death to be feared as an extinction of life or is there a place of torment that drives this fear? Indeed do we need to fear the possibility of an eternal hell? Where can we find information and who's report can we believe? In the search for an answer to the question of is hell forever? This paper will discuss the three views of Universalism, Annihilationism and Conscious Punishment and weigh them against the available Biblical evidence. Within the context of the earlier discussions, the paper will also consider questions like "Is hell the place where a loving God would actually send the object of his affections? Is hell only metaphorical or is it literal? And indeed, does a modern understanding require the existence of hell at all?" The writer has the view th

Eugenics and the Fall Of Sparta

The fall of Sparta was due to their eugenics system. Sparta was considered to have the strongest military in all of Greece. They trained men specifically for military and combat, where other countries assembled a military when it was needed, thus they used black smiths, farmers, and other men from a variety of occupations. The other militaries were not as strong as Sparta because they were not trained specifically for military whereas the Spartan men were trained just for Spartan military. Sparta was so focused on building up a strong military that they did not spend time building up a strong empire with the military. Most of Sparta was built on the backs of slaves and many of the jobs and daily responsibilities fell in the hands of slaves. This allowed for the Spartans to focus on building up a strong military force. In order to build a strong military, the elders would inspect new born babies, within 24 hours of birth. They would determine if the child would be strong enough to survi

Origins and Development of the 1937 Constitution

The Oxford concise dictionary of politics defines a Constitution as "The set of fundamental rules governing the politics of a nation or subnational body" (McLean/McMillan 2009: 116). This essay will discuss the origins and development of the 1937 Irish Constitution (Bunreacht Na hE᷄ireann). It will outline the 1937 constitutions roots in the post Anglo Irish Treaty/ Free State Constitution and also highlight the main differences between the two. It will be shown how the constitution has developed during the last 78 years, and how with the declining influence of the Catholic Church in Ireland it has been amended to reflect this. The influential role played by Eamon De Valera and Fianna Fail will also be discussed. The Free State constitution of 1922 was implemented after the Anglo Irish Treaty of the same year. This Constitution contained many elements which due to the nature of the Anglo Irish Treaty meant that there was still a lot of British influence on the Island. &

The Poetic Voice of Emily Dickinson

American poet, Emily Dickinson, wrote many great poems throughout her life. During her life, five of her poems got published in the Springfield Republican. By 1890, the first book of Dickinson's work was published. However like many famous poets, many of her poems weren't published until after her death. After her death, her sister found over 1,700 of Emily's poems. Of these many poems written by Emily Dickinson, many have been passed on for deeper analysis. Three of these are, "I'm Nobody! Who are you?", "Hope is the Thing With Feathers", and "Papa above". "I'm Nobody! Who are you?" is a poem about someone who considers their self nobody. This nobody-ness means that she is outside the public sphere. Here Dickinson is touching on her own failure to become a published poet. Thus said, most of the society looks at her as "nobody", si

Inequality in Brave New World

The thought that everyone is born equal and all have the same chances in life is fundamentally flawed. Every person has a unique set of strengths, which can aid them in certain areas of life. Conversely, each person also has their own unique set of challenges that restrain them. There are certain inevitable qualities that set people apart such as inherent talents, intelligence, and some people are just born with more opportunities. "Men are equal; it is not birth but virtue that makes the difference." is just as untrue as the famous line in our beloved Declaration of Independence "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal" Not every man and women are created equal. Inherent talents can range from artistic to athletic. Some people have a vertical of 24 inches and others might be able to draw the Mona Lisa in five minutes and others who can sing like an angel. Also, there are some people who do not have a specifically athletic or artisti

Ratification of the American Constitution

Between September 17, 1787, the day the Constitution was signed by the Constitutional Convention, and May 29, 1790, the day Rhode Island became the last state to ratify the Constitution, federalists and antifederalists engaged in a national debate. The delegates that were working on the transition from the Articles of Confederation to the Constitution decided that only 9 of the 13 states had to vote their approval, for the changes to take place. Even with low ratification requirements, the battle for ratification was a close one. Anti-federalists were a diverse group of people, who opposed the Constitution. The Anti-federalists were not exactly against a federal government, but they wanted the supreme power to remain to the states. They were afraid the Constitution failed to protect the individual's rights, disregard paper money, and foreclose their farms. Even though they were not satisfied with the proposition at hand, they suggested no alternative. Anti-federalists were mostly farmers, and known to be poorer than most Federalists. They had some promine

Principles and Practices of Buddhism

Of the many religions that originated in the Indian peninsula, Buddhism is the one that, during the last decade, has known the biggest enthusiasm and the greatest increase in interest in the West (Baumann & Prebish, p. 85). In fact, this increase in interest is reflected by the numerous stories related by the media as well as the various research conducted by university scholars since the dawn of the 21st century (ibid.). Buddhism, however, is a religion of long history. More precisely, Buddhism takes roots in the teachings of Siddhartha Gautama, a sage that lived during the 6th century B.C. in a region near the Ganges river. The sage is believed to have found the answer to the question of suffering, which gave him the status of "The Enlightened" or Buddha[ CITATION Boe99 l 1036 ]. This essay will first emphasize on this historical context, before exploring the different forms to which Buddhism has evolved, the major ones being the Theravada, the Mahayana and the Vajrayana.

The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet

What is a tragedy? One of the most famous tragedy is Romeo and Juliet written by William Shakespeare about two star crossed lovers whose love sprung out of hate but was never meant to be. The feud between the Montague's and Capulets caused the lovers to rush many important decisions. Throughout the play Romeo shows how impatient he is to be with Juliet which causes many problems in their lives. Romeo, although older than Juliet and assumingly more experienced than Juliet, shows how naive he really is in many ways. These many flaws in Romeo cause many problems leading up to the tragedy. Therefore, the person who is the most responsible for the tragedy of Romeo and Juliet is Romeo Montague. Romeo is a youth and although he is older than Juliet, he is very naive himself and also very narrow minded. In the beginning of the play he listens to the advice of the Friar but as the play goes on, Romeo grows closer to Juliet and farther from the Friar, his family, friends. As he is growing far f

The Real Meaning of Life

This is for all the people who feel lost and confused about the many unanswerable questions about life itself: Stay positive. I encourage you all to keep searching for the truth. Like the movie says, "Truth is singular. Its "versions" are mistruths." All human ideas about life and death are but a version. We will continue to try to come up with the right version but we might never know. I feel like in order for us to face life and death without fear, we must first accept that we might never know the truth and that anything can be possible. On one end, there could be a heaven where we go when we die and live in forever bliss for eternity. On the other end, there could be nothing at all, no after life, meaning we only have one chance to experience life in this universe, we live and die and the universe moves on. And then there's everything in the middle, from reincarnation to our souls going someplace else. When I personally accepted that any of these could be true, my fear of death and uncertainty disappeared. Because there is only on

Religion and Coming Out of the Closet

Each day in America millions of lesbians and gays decide to come out of the closet, and plea for the same rights as their heterosexual counter parts. Currently in America there is an ongoing debate on whether gay and lesbian couples ought to receive the same legal rights and benefits as heterosexual married couples. This particular debate has been a debated topic for decades; however no real solution has been reached. Given the importance of this subject it has been one of the leading topics in recent debates and elections. There are many individuals that support legalizing same sex rights; however there are many on the other side of the spectrum. Aside from societal and religious conventions, in my opinion same sex couples should have the same benefits as heterosexual couples w

Knowledge and Social Order

Knowledge is fact, information, and skill acquired by a person through experience or education. This simple definition has many implications when defined from a sociological standpoint. When I attempt to define knowledge from that point of view, I find it inevitable but to associate it with social inequalities and differences. Another question that comes in mind is the extent of the legitimacy of the knowledge acquired by our students, and the equality--in terms of truthfulness, power, and organization--in distribution. I am swarmed with a multitude of questions when I attempt to define knowledge and how it is distributed. Examining knowledge from a conflict perspective, I found that some social groups attain better knowledge that others--not necessarily true--which in turn solidifies the stratification of our societies. Knowledge is created in many ways and forms; to answer the question of how it is created, the relationship between social inequality, which is supported by power, mu

Theories and Methodoligies of Criminal Behavior

Criminal behavior within humans as a society have effect on certain individuals through biological, psychological, and sociological theories. These ideas interact with certain people in numerous, diverse ways and some not at all. People who commit crime have that drive to do so, they get a powerful feeling before, during, and after the act of criminal behavior. Biological theories deal with studies influenced by families, genetics, the way one was brought up and even regions of development. Psychological ideas about reasons criminals do what they do is based upon the main aspects of personality, id, ego, and super ego. These play a big role in a person's decision making throughout life, which can be influenced by ways of being nurtured and social environments. The sociological section of understanding crime is focused mainly around the boundaries of the norms and values of a certain society. Each idea about human beings thinking consciously or even subconsciously about crime correlate

Marcus Antony and Political Manipulation

In modern day politics, the art of Political manipulation is very popular. In the case of the Rome Empire's history the art is well practiced by Mark Anthony during the second triumvirate era. The Romans during the triumvirate era and their perception of what we in the contemporary world call 'manipulation.' In the modern world, to refer to somebody as Antonio has an indirect connotation of a legend or master of political and military life. How did ancient notions of 'political manipulation' play out in Antonio's political machinations against the other two members of the second triumvirate? Many previous studies have been completed in ancient Rome, including studies on Antony and his role in the second triumvirate. However, few studies have focused on Antony's political manipulation, and the impact of this to the political life in Rome, as well as the success or failure of the second triumvirate. Classical literature can give an insight into the political power plays that

A Look at the Pau Market

Abstract The Pau market where mothers sell food contains cooked food mainly protein(meat) unlike vegetables and fruits which is a concern to the target market (students). In regard to this situation where students are directed, the type of food prepared must depend on the needs of a student in order to make an impact on his/her studies and academic performance. Introduction This report is based on the food market outside the dining hall. It's a small market sold by the home mothers. The market usually consists of cooked food (stew rice) peanuts and flex etc. This report will base on how they (sellers) can improve in selling nutritious food at the market for a student's well being. Background The main targets are the students of Pau. From observation, there was a need to this situation on the type of food they sold, often protein sold. Jesus and Buddha - Christianity and Buddhism

Originating from the continent of Asia, Christianity and Buddhism are two of the largest and most influential religions in the world. These profound religions are widely practiced and were both spread by religious leaders. Jesus Christ was the founder of Christianity and spread the word of God across the Middle East. Buddha taught peace and kindness and lived a spiritual life. When comparing their lives, one can see that they contain many similarities and interesting parallels such as their birth stories, their entrance into ministry/monasticism, and their teachings. These men were "both destined to instill light and love to this world" (Punnoose). When looking into the lives of both Jesus and Buddha, one of the most prominent similarities would have to be their birth stories. Jesus and Buddha were both conceived by some type of divine power. Before Jesus was born, his mother, the Virgin Mary, was betrothed to a man named Joseph. She was visited by an angel during a dream in

The Radicalization of Irish Nationalism

This essay will show that Nationalism in Ireland was deeply radicalised between 1916 and 1919. This radicalisation was born out of the Easter Rising of 1916, and the events that followed. The executions and interment of the volunteers who fought in the Rising, changed public opinion immensely. The unjust and atrocious murders of three innocent journalists including Francis Sheehy Skeffington at the same time as the Rising also served to radicalise Nationalism and public opinion. The conscription crisis of 1918 also boosted anti-British bias that was at this stage very evident in the Country. All of these events culminated in a landslide victory for Sinn Fein in December 1918. On Easter Monday the 24th of April 1916, the leaders of the I.R.B (Irish Republican Brotherhood) who included Padraig Pearse, James Connolly, Thomas Clarke, Eammon Ceannt, Joseph Plunkett, Sean Mac Diarmada and Thomas Mcdonagh "marched some 1500 men onto the streets of Dublin to proclaim the establishment of

Pursuing a Degree in Accounting

The thing that has inspired me for accounting is that I have always loved to work with numbers. So why should I not pursue what I like to do and get a degree in it? All my life I have been working with numbers, like in banking and accounts receivable. After losing my job, I had the opportunity to do what I have wanted to do for a very long time. That is going back to school. So here I am attending College of Lake County for my Associates in Accounting. Doing this will let me do what I am passionate about. It will also give me and my kids a great future. What is accounting? Accounting is the recording of financial transactions plus storing, sorting, retrieving, summarizing, and presenting the information in various reports and analyses. But in all seriousness, intro is a lot of basics: debits and credits, how to record various transactions, basic financial ratios. The real deal is how to create various financial statements and when to use them, inventory management, depreciation and t

One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest - Film Version

Power is important in society to classify different economic or gender classes and for people in the higher classes to obtain strength to overpower others. "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" by director Milos' Forman demonstrates and shows how the roles of power change throughout the movie. Initially, the female nurses in the ward obtain more of the power until McMurphy shows up and gives the patients hope and strength to stand and rebel against the nurses so they can find freedom and confidence in themselves. The film shows how actions of certain people can affect the judgments of others and make them feel powerful. This concept is contrasted in different parts of the film where the roles change from having power to having no power, and with the absence of no power patients have a buildup of anger and sadness and are able to express how they feel because of McMurphy. For example in the film where Mrs. Ratched held a discussion group where she told the patients that she was going to take away th

Catholic Ethics and Moral Principles

Ethics is a system of moral principles; it considers what is right for each individual as well as the society. "Ethics is concerned with working out what is right or wrong, good or bad behaviour when responding to a particular issue, circumstance or situation"-Class ppt. It involves thinking about the correct and incorrect reactions to issues as well as understanding why we respond the way we do. Each human being is unique as we are all made in the image and likeness of God. We all have the right to be entitled to human dignity, to live freely and to make our own choices and decisions. Since every human is unique, we have struggled with our differences and relating to one another since long before our time, this is due to the differences in development of each individual's conscience. "A persons conscience enables them to accept responsibility for their actions" (pg. 19). Our conscience is our sanctuary/safe place, it is where we feel we are totally alone with God,
