The Coping Mechanism of MarijuanaThere has been a rising trend among teenagers and college students in the United States with the use of marijuana. Young adults all across the country have begun to use the illegal drug daily. In 2012 the Partnership at Drugfree.org released a survey revealing that nearly 1 in 10 teens said they smoke marijuana at least 20 or more times a month. This is an 80% increase from the organizations 2008 survey. Many are asking why and how has Marijuana grown to become the most commonly used prohibited drug among US teens. Through the help of some Coastal Carolina College students, some insight can be made to these questions. As well as some counter arguments to why some students do not smoke and how users and non-users feel about the drugs legal status among the United States. Growing up in suburban northeast Columbia, South Carolina, I was raised blind to the stinky, sticky, furry, leafy, potent, dry, green or purple plant of marijuana. Color Palette in Moonrise KingdomThe semi-realistic world evoked in Moonrise Kingdom has very precise coloration. The use of pastel hues in the sky, buildings and characters' outfits, makes it seem that the setting is fairytale-like. The retro quality from the muted hues creates nostalgia for a time that could have been. The typical colors seen throughout the film are a mixture of desaturated, muted and more sumptuous hues in the coastal backdrop such as muted yellow-green, pale light blue and desaturated red-brown colors. The purpose of the different desaturated light colors is to demonstrate the setting of New England in 1965. A particular color that Anderson uses to evoke emotion is red. In Figure 2, one of the protagonists, Suzy Bishop, wears a pink outerwear with a red beanie |

Epistemology Essay - Comparing Dewey and KantDo I really need this? What is this even for? These are some of the questions we can ask about anything in terms of their practical application. This is the philosophy of pragmatism (Stickney). A prominent figure within this sphere in philosophy is John Dewey, an American philosopher, psychologist, and educational reformer (John Dewey). As a philosopher, Dewey's beliefs as a pragmatist are similar to that of Immanuel Kant's, a major figure in modern philosophy. Here, Kant's philosophy is identical to Dewey's when looking at the extent of how much we know about anything as well as the purpose of knowledge. Their points are mostly similar as they both state that cannot know essences, though Kant states that knowledge we possess are true for all times and all people (Stickney), while Dewey states that the knowledge we possess can change based on whatever works for us. Overall, much of Dewey's and Kant's philosopher are on similar terms, with just slightly different approaches. To start o |

Overcoming Adversity in The Catcher in the RyeA classic theme in American literature is overcoming adversity. In contrast, J.D. Salinger's Catcher in the Rye presents readers with a character who falls short of every tough situation he faces. J.D. Salinger uses Holden's rebellious experiences to link all teenagers in the 1950's and the 1960's together. Holden is unwilling to cooperate, socially and scholastically, which brings about mental and physical problems. His story resonates within the teenage community because he reveals likely challenges teens endure while bridging the gap between adolescence and adulthood. Through his failures, he motivates readers to step out of their comfort zone, forget their childish ideals, and take on responsibility of maturity. During the postwar booms of 1945, Americans felt secure and took on new challenges. Winston Churchill said, "The United States stand at this moment at the summit of the world". Much of America was lively, and according to Huck's Raft "the postwar era was a p |

Gay Marriage - Time for ToleranceThere are several standing viewpoints and opinions regarding the topic of gay marriage. The dispute that gay marriage should be legalized and recognized throughout America is highly controversial through many states, as well as amongst numerous individuals. According to an article released from the Human Rights campaign Office in 2012, there is nothing wrong with allowing homosexuals to marry amongst each other. Denying this privilege would be to deny them the rights that those who are heterosexual already possess. Every person should be allowed to pursue their own preferences of love and happiness, regardless of their choice of sexuality. Gay marriage should be recognized in all states and countries, for I firmly believe that it is a matter that has been pushed to the side and held off for far too long. Moreover, there are several reasons as to why gay couples should have the freedom to marry. Homosexual couples have every right to feel as strongly about their partners, as well as t |

How to Survive a Zombie ApocolypseIt can keep you up at night thinking about the possibility of surviving a zombie apocalypse. What would life be like, and what it would take for survival in a post-apocalyptic world? There is a lot to think about, as far as survival skills and what will be needed. For me, the three most important things for my survival would be to have proper firearm training, close quarter combat ability, along with being able to survive and live in the wilderness. Which is why I am grateful for my hunting and camping background, knowing these will be very important skills when surviving after the apocalypse. The first and most important is to have proper firearm training. That in itself can make or break your chances of survival. Knowing which weapon to use is very important. For example, a shotgun is a short range, close quarters weapon (picture 3.1). It also makes a great deal of noise, which can attract the attention of any nearby zombies. If you come across a large group of the undead, a good |

The Missionary Journeys of Saint PaulSt. Paul is such a faithful follower of Jesus and his teachings. He didn't start off that way however. Paul's name was not even originally Paul. Before he was converted Paul was called Saul and he was a Pharisee. He was angry that the Apostles and other disciples of Jesus were spreading the Good News. Saul was so upset that he traveled to Damascus to find, arrest, and bring back the enemies of Judaism for punishment. On his way however, Saul was knocked down and blinded. This blinding had a secret meaning of his blindness towards Jesus as our Savior. The Lord then approached him saying, "Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?" Saul had a change of heart and was converted to Christianity and his name was changed to Paul. Paul worked the rest of his life spreading the Good News alongside the other disciples. Paul is called the Apostle to the Gentiles because his conversion story was so incredible and inspiring. After Pa |

Therefore, purchasing has had a significant impact on the company's bottom line and was of vital importance to Dräger. Thus, there is an urgent need to establish a new procurement strategy for corporate purchasing at Dräger Medical that would provide the company with both cost-effective and quality materials and health care equipment in the absence of competitive pricing strategy. The question remains: how to make purchasing more effective and how to free capacity so that Dräger Medical could improve its focus on core competencies? To achieve this aim, it is suggested t |

Plasma and LCD TelevisionsWe live in a world of choice. Every product we buy has multiple models/options and it's up to us to decide which one we think is best. Sometimes instead of buying products for our personal requirements, we fall in the trap of advertisements and commercials and we buy a product just because it looked good in the store. Though both Plasma and LCD TV's are very similar, there are many technical aspects that allow consumers to have a few different choices when picking the right TV for them. In the store, you can hardly tell the difference between Plasma and LCD TV's. They look very similar, and if you don't take a closer look it may be hard to spot the main differences between Plasma and LCD TV's. The main differences between the two are the quality of the picture, features, cost, and lifespan. Before discussing which screen is better, it's important to know the technology behind both TV's. LCD is short for liquid crystal display. "LCD panels are composed of two sheets of polarized |

Religion in The Canterbury TalesHow Chaucer's attitude toward religion in the General Prologue show his disappointment in the Medieval Church. Geoffrey Chaucer's, The Canterbury Tales, is known to be a critique of the Medieval Church. In the General Prologue, Chaucer introduces the characters that are participating in the "Canterbury Tales." Chaucer uses his introductions to indirectly take shots at the Medieval Church. He sees the Medieval Church and its clergy as corrupt. His descriptions of the characters that are involved in the church, the Prioress, the Monk, the Friar, the Summoner, and the Pardoner, gives reason to say that is what Chaucer believes. It seems that Chaucer does not have one bad thing to say about the characters he is presenting. He forms each character's flaws into compliments. As each clergy member's description goes on, readers get the sense that Chaucer is describing each character as deceptive. The things that are being said about the characters do not add up to their pr |

Defining the Word CrusadeAn intense scholarly debate that is ongoing between several experts even now is the discussion over what the crusades as a whole were and how to define the word crusade itself. Norman Housley described it best in his book Contesting the Crusades with the quote, "The answer is that no clear template or yardstick for a crusade exists against which we can measure the features of other expeditions to check if they 'qualify'" (pg. 1). A question that Housley proposes is whether the crusades were a holy war or an armed pilgrimage. In this essay, by the end, I intend to define what I believe a crusade is in terms that best encompass all of the facts available. I will base my argument around the different actions that took place by the crusaders and their motivations for such actions. As well as what led up to the different places they attacked and why those places specifically. I intend to back up my writing with researched facts, historical texts, and personal intuition. Wer |

Symptoms and Treatments of Schizophrenia"There is such a terrible stigma about this disease but it is actually no different than any other physical brain disease," said researcher Dr. Tomas Paus. You can see them, but no one else can. You can hear them, but your the only one! Schizophrenia, brain a disorder that can alter the way people think, see the world and act. It is a chronic disorder, but luckily there is help offered. Schizophrenia is compared to a mystery, with puzzle pieces missing. In my report, you will learn about the theories that cause schizophrenia, symptoms of schizophrenia, and how schizophrenia is treated. There are no proven fact as to the causes of schizophrenia, but there are plenty of theories that could potentially make sense. One big factor into this cause is simply genetics. Your genetics change the structure and chemistry in your brain. Before finding the real cause of this illness, it's still not a fact if weather schizophrenia is a single disorder or various syndromes with different reasons. The |

Billie Jean King - Tennis TrailblazerEqual rights are something that people have been fighting for since the birth of America. Malcolm X and MLK Jr. are known by many for the feats they accomplished to gain those rights for African Americans. When it comes to women's rights, the name Billie Jean King does not get the recognition it deserves. Billie has influenced the way women would be perceived during the ''70's and to this day by prevailing over the challenges that stood in her way to change women's history. During the 1960's, women were not viewed as equals to men in any way and it was not easy for women to speak up because often times they were not heard. Before the days of Title IX, the opportunities for women were limited, and, once they were given those opportunities, they were nowhere near equal to men. Billie Jean was on a campaign for women to be equal. According to the Biography.com, "This campaign for equality is most notably remembered for her 1973 'Battle of the Sexes' match against 55-ye |

The Bystander EffectAs children, we were taught to always intervene in one way or another. If another child was in danger or in trouble, we were told to tell a teacher if we were on the playground, or to tell the nearest adult. Some of us were even taught to use a phone and dial 911 for real emergencies. But as we grow older, do we lose that lesson, or does the heat of the moment that distracts us from actually helping someone in danger and in trouble? The answer is neither. The real answer to the question is that you were under the bystander effect. The bystander effect is the likelihood that that the greater the number of bystanders who witness an emergency situation, the greater the chance of the bystanders will likely not help. The bystander effect was discovered by New York social psychologists Bibb Latané and John Darley in 1987. One day, they were discussing the recent murder of Kitty Genovese. They both hypothesized that the more people who witness an emergency, the less likely it is that |

Reasons for the Great DepressionFrom the year 1929 to roughly 1939 the United States experienced what is called the longest down fall in the history of the country. This happened right after the Stock Market crash in 1929 where millions of dollars were lost and countless investors lost all of their money. (History.com, 2015) During this time of hardship spending declined, working plants shut down and unemployment was constantly climbing. The speculation on what caused such a horrible nightmare for the United States are many such as industrial faintness, Government policies and foreign trade. The industry faintness is one of the thing that caused the economy to become unbalanced. Farming had much to contribute to the Great Depression in that they were not able to produce on the farms therefore leading to not being able to pay their bills that lastly leads to not being able to sustain the government with their earnings. Another cause that concerned farming was that during the time frame there was no consistent rainfal |

The Persuasion of PropagandaMost people associate the word "propaganda" with Nazi Germany in which it was used to unify a nation by turning Adolf Hitler into a demigod, by identifying and demonizing those countries which stood in the way of Germany fulfilling its destiny, and by scapegoating Jews. The result of all that propaganda was the destruction of Europe and the death of some 50 million people, so it is not surprising that propaganda has negative connotations. It is usually used by governments to plant their ideas to shape public opinion in their favor. As Thompson states in his article while using propaganda, an intellectual, rational response is not desired and is not sought (21). Yet there are also forms of propaganda that support noble causes, such as mobilizing the nation in the face of danger, promoting equal rights for women or racial minorities, and for the sake of improved public health, to give just a few examples. Some analysts believe the most effective form of propaganda is the most h |
