Social Norms and Customer Tipping

Tipping is a common social norm that offers interesting case study for economists to evaluate the true reasons behind tipping. Consumers will most likely see the discoveries just as fascinating. Most of the general population will tip their server and not contemplate the reasons as to why they tipped their server. Most economists argue that tipping is not economically efficient and consumers tip for psychological value. Others argue that tipping is a way of paying for exceptional service. There are also a small percentage of restaurants that have embraced a no-tip policy. This material will take a more in-depth look at the social norm of tipping utilizing factual information provided by numerous case studies, restaurant workers, and consumers. Ultimately these tools will be used to analyze the true reasons behind the social norm of tipping to provide a better understanding of this controversy. A tip, otherwise known as gratuity, is an amount of currency given to a service provider fo

Montessori and Four Planes of Development

Four planes: Idea of "education" becomes an "aid to life" - a natural process all children undertake spontaneously, guided through ever evolving stages of development. Montessori had a profound respect for the child. She marveled at the constructive possibilities within the child, and hope for humankind that resided within each little person. She regarded children as fellow human beings, not as inferiors, and this freed her from the typical adult prejudices towards young children still commonly held today. Eventually, this open-minded and humble attitude allowed her to discover the true function of childhood in the development of the human being. Marial Montessori says that, the child passes through certain phases, each of which has its own particular needs. The characteristics of each are so different that the passages from one phase to another have been described by certain psychologists as 'rebirths'. (Montessori, "The Four Planes of Education"

Night - Rhetorical Analysis Essay

Analysis of Night "I have more faith in Hitler than anyone else. He alone has kept his promises, all his promises, to the Jewish people." (81). This is the saddening truth that many Jewish people had to face during the Holocaust. Encountering the threat of death almost everyday, Elie Wiesel shares his tragic struggle through the years of the Holocaust in his narrative Night. Wiesel uses diction, figurative language, and imagery to share the calamitous period he confronted during the 1940's. The Holocaust brings to mind death, torture, and sadness but Elie Wiesel brings in a more profound perception with how he writes.Wiesel handles word choice masterfully. He brings the accounts of sorrow to a new meaning, a deeper feeling that no one could possibly fully understand. "He was playing his life. His whole being was gliding over the strings. His unfilled hopes. His charred past, his extinguished future. He played that which he would never play again." (95). Wiesel takes a simple sentence about pl

Social Facilitation Theory for the Stroop Effect

Abstract The Social Facilitation Theory was examined through the different settings in which two tasks were completed. 18 college students enrolled in an Experimental Psychology class were the participants of this study. Each participant completed a Reading task and a Stroop Task once alone with just the instructor and then again in the presence of a group. Each task was timed, in seconds, and recorded by the instructor for full correct completion. Participants were asked to complete each task as fast as they could. The change in setting used to test the theory that the presence of a group would change the outcome of the time it took the participant to complete each task than the first time they completed the task in an alone setting. The presence of a group actually was found to have caused faster times than when the task was done in an alone setting. These findings suggest that there is a main effect for setting and task type. These results also indicate that Social Facilitation the

Drug Abuse and Child Neglect

Did you know that more than 8 million children in the United States have at least one parent who abuses drugs? Sadly, it's true. In this article, it is based off how drug abuse on parents leads to child neglect. There are existing treatment studies that have been partial to case examinations. Therefore, therapy has been evaluated in parents that would commit child neglect and drug abuse. Abusing drugs is not just only a problem but it also becomes more of a problem with families and that's how child neglect starts to occur. Parents who abuse any drugs and alcohol, are more likely to end up raising their children wrong, have divorces, and are unemployed or get fired from their jobs. Therefore, they don't realize all the damage they're doing to their children. Children who have parents that don't consume drugs, don't experience child neglect as much as children who do consume them, and end up experiencing parental behavior such as neglect as I've mentioned, they are unsupervised, are e

A History of Abolitionism

John Brown had once said "No people in the history of the world have been so misunderstood, so misjudged, and so cruelly maligned." Being an abolitionist meant having a great passion about getting rid of the idea of slavery. Three abolitionists that were greatly against slavery would be John Brown, Harriet Tubman and Harriet Beecher Stowe. The first abolitionist that was highly against slavery was John Brown. He grew up in Ohio. He was the son of a wandering New Englander. In Ohio he was taught in local schools to resent education and his parents revere the Bible and they hated slavery. He frequently sought the company of blacks, for 2 years living in a freedmen's community in North Elba, N.Y. John Brown had became a militant abolitionist or a conductor for the Underground Railroad. He was also the organizer of a self protection league for the blacks and fugitive slaves. When John Brown was 50 years old he had made racism and slavery a reality. Having an organized militia unit he led a mission of revenge. On May 23, 1856 him and six followers had visited the homes of pr

What's With All the Fake Food?

People are finally getting into the amount of food that's been processed and made with corn as one of the ingredients. I feel like a hipster when we talk about such a subject due to the fact that ever since I was little, I knew a lot about America, even though I was born outside the country. That's America's reputation, unhealthy people who are obese and rich. That's what the kids outside of America were told about America at the time, and nowadays it's the same out here. I hear adults saying the same thing trying to teach kids nowadays to eat healthier and avoid fast food. Then there's some people who try and say that without big agriculture and genetic modifications to the food, we'd starve due to the huge numbers of people on Earth. Personally, I completely disagree with this claim. I do

Revenge in Great Works of Literature

Douglas Horton once said, "While seeking revenge, dig two graves - one for yourself." Revenge is only satisfying for a short period of time. When the joy of watching suffering fades away, the humane guilt settles under the skin. In the books "Wuthering Heights", "The Scarlet Letter", and "The Count of Monte Cristo" characters are all enraged and begin to dig their enemy's grave. In the process, a grave is also dug for themselves. The gravedigger in "Wuthering Heights" was a man known as Heathcliff. He had a strong affection for a woman named Catherine, but he was not the right type of man. He did not have the wealth or family equivalent of Edward. This enraged Heathcliff because he had a deep, passionate love for Catherine that was denied. Heathcliff's life after this abandonment drove his desire to get even with Edgar. From this moment forward, he derailed a hopeful life that would never get back on track. (Serafimov 2) While he ran away from Withering Heights, he formulated his revenge. Heathcliff even states, "I'm trying to settle how I shall pay Hindley

My Experience with Racism

What is race? What does it mean to be White, Black, Asian, Latino, or any other identifiable race? The general misconception is that race is manifested by the pigment of our skin, the shape of our eyes, the size of our noses or brows. Pointing out these features and generalizing certain aspects towards a group of people normal, but it does not necessarily mean it's the right way to approach racial identification. Physical features do not tell the whole story. An individual may have a very diverse background, a very interesting story about their past, but the observable features may not suffice. Nonetheless, this type of generalization evokes a sense of racism whether it is intentional or not. My first encounter with racism since moving here from China was on my first day of school. I felt particularly nervous about class because I was unsure how the other students would react to someone who is not very fluent in English. I found a seat and sat quiet hoping not to stir up a conversation and f

Vices Cannot Exist Without Virtue

Virtues cannot exist without vices. As Abraham Lincoln suggests there exists a dependence between virtue and vices in that one cannot exist without the other. Vices, immoral or wicked behavior or traits, are an inevitable part of human nature. However, I chose to believe that vices are in fact a tool to feed creativity and a way to truly grasp our own capabilities. At the core of our vices I believe there is a want to achieve something good for mankind, in agreement with what Samuel Butler's statement alludes to. Mark Twain and Winston Churchill are prime examples of men who indulged in what some would view as immoral acts, particularly alcoholism, gluttony and greed, yet such men rose to greatness and achieved world - wide recognition for their acts and works. I will convince you of the belief that vices are truly a strength in disguise - as they say, a rose by any other name would smell just as sweet. I do appreciate, however, that relying purely on vices to achieve greatness is a path that may lead to your demise. Moderation and the right intentions

Infertility - Struggling to Become Pregnant

Lots of women are eager to see a "+" or "yes" on their pregnancy test, but some may never be able to experience that moment. In order for a women to become pregnant, a series of consecutive steps must first take place: the ovaries, (the ovaries main function is to make the hormones estrogen and progesterone and to release an egg) release an egg, the egg follows the path to the fallopian tubes, (the fallopian tubes connect the ovaries to the uterus) and then into the uterus, sperm (a man 's sperm must reach and fertilize the egg before it dies) reaches the egg and fertilizes it, then the egg must divide itself several times and finally the egg must attach itself to the uterus wall (where the unborn baby will live for the following nine months) and begin developing the placenta. When things don't go according to this plan or a problem arises and interferes with this process, infertility is often the outcome. Infertility is defined as the inability to become preg

Observing the Ordinary - The Blanket

Have you ever noticed how no one actually pays attention or appreciates, the importance of an object? Simple objects such as forks, tables, chairs, blankets, etc. can be very intriguing. Now that I put more thought into ordinary objects, one specific object stands out among the rest. My childhood blanket stands out to me because it was with me from the moment I was born until about a few months ago. When I first got my blanket it was very soft, fuzzy, warm, with vibrant colors, and was enormous compared to little me. The soft material made me feel very cozy as I had it around myself. Today it's a whole different story. The once enormous blanket has seemed to have diminished over the years as I grew older. Every time I laid down and threw the blanket upon myself, it always managed to expose my feet. As much as I moved, tossed, and even wiggled, my whole body could never manage to stay covered. My blanket was a perfect rectangle shape, with an exquisite magenta color. The design was unique with bear

Kids, Video Games and Violence

In this chaotic and technology-driven world, kids may not ever have the childhood experience of playing freeze tag or hide and seek because video games have taken over, but that is not a bad thing. Many children spend many of their free time playing video games. Video games are the number one source of entertainment for numerous kids. As numerous games contain; blood and gore, intense violence, strong sexual content and use of drugs, it does not hurt kids on the long run. Violent video games can benefit you by enhancing your social skills, problem solving skills, and critical thinking skills. Although many researchers state that video games are not harmful to children, many children have done vicious acts because of video games. Laura St John stated "Violent video games show kids how to express themselves physically in a violent way" (St John). From first hand experience, I have witnessed my younger brother get pushed around and instead of resolving the issue by telling an

Effects of Global Warming on Coral Reefs

A variety of human activities have led to the recent global decline of reef-building corals. The ecological, social, and economic value of coral reefs has made them an international conservation priority. Coral reefs around the world are being destroyed at a faster rate than they can recover, therefore putting them in great danger. One of the largest causes of the destruction of the reefs is global warming, which has been increasing the temperature of the ocean water resulting in coral bleaching. Human-induced climate change has already led to substantial changes in a variety of ecosystems. Coral reefs are particularly vulnerable to rises in ocean temperature as a result of climate change because they already live near their thermal limits. A coral reef is a ridge formed in shallow ocean water by accumulated calcium-containing exoskeletons of coral animals, certain red algae, and mollusks. Coral reefs are tropical, forming only where surface waters are never cooler than sixty-eight degrees Fahrenheit. Climate change increases ocean temperatures, reducing the level of calcium

The Effects of Deforestation

Deforestation We all know that the world is a place where we should educate ourselves about and cherish forever. Although, how often does this really happen? Sad statistics prove that our forests have taken a huge negative impact towards the modern day life. Over eighty percent of the world's natural forests have disappeared over time leaving countless animals without habitats. The annihilation of forests around the world is continuing at an alarming rate lowering the quality of land and life for not only people, but also animals, and a stop to this form of abuse needs to occur before it is too late. The Positive Effects Cutting down forests does have some positive outcomes to consider. Economically, deforestation gives us a boost providing farm land from what was once a forest. Houses, buildings, and factories have become more abundant from the wood deforestation provides. Furthermore, numerous roads may be built providing easier trade and transport, which is much more convenient t

Novel Summary - The Road by Cormac McCarthy

Before the son's mother committed suicide due to the extreme environment their family was put in, she advised them to travel south because the weather was more livable. Rhetorical Analysis of Justice

Social activist Nee Gloria Watkins in her second chapter of the book , states that there can be no love without justice.Until we live in a culture that not only respects but also upholds basic civil right for children , most children will not know love. She supports this claim by first acquainting how we attain love , then, classifying cause and effect of abuse, and finally by contributing the reader solutions.Watkins's purpose is to have a functional society but in order to have a functional society parents or guardians need to teach their children how to be responsible without abusing , overindulging, or neglecting them.Nee Gloria Watkins Justice : Childhood Love Lessons was written to inform parents or guardians to teach their children responsibility and love to be able to have a functional society , and through her use of logical reasonings ,emotion, and her credibility as a writer , she was effective in achieving that purpose.Hook was very effective in persuading her readers due

Theme of Courage in Private Peaceful

Courage and cowardice, these two words are featured on the cover of the heroic story, "Private Peaceful," written by Michael Morpurgo. Courage and cowardice are the themes explored in this essay. Throughout the story, bravery is contrasted with cowardice. Although two hugely different actions, they sometimes seem to merge into one in this story. When we stop and think about courage and cowardice we are faced with a question; what do they really mean? In the dictionary the meaning of courage is the power or the quality of dealing of facing danger, fear or pain with self-possession, confidence and resolution. The meaning of cowardice is ignoble fear in the face of danger or pain. These two words have such different meanings that it's hard to ever believe that one person could have these two characteristics. The novel Private Peaceful is a deeply moving story of a young soldier who looks back over his childhood from the battlefields of the First World War to his memories of family life

The Mexican-American Civil Rights Movement

Mexican-Americans struggled for equal rights in America in the twentieth century. In the 1960's John F. Kennedy was elected president with the help of Mexicans-Americans. Kennedy promised Mexican-Americans certain rights and, "he didn't fulfill his promises to them. For one, Kennedy didn't appoint more Mexican-Americans to higher political positions and didn't pass legislation that would benefit the Mexican-American community." To be More Specific, Mexican-Americans held a Civil Rights Movement, also known as the The Chicano Movement, or El Movimiento. It was one of many protests in the United States. Many groups were going through struggles during this time, African Americans were fighting for equality, women wanted the right to vote, and Native Americans were fighting for land that was originally theirs. The movement started in the 1940's, but rapidly grew to impact to The United States in the 1960's, when Mexican-Americans began

Individualism and the American Dream

In the book "The Geopolitics of Emotion" by Dominique Moisi, he discusses issues that are happening around the world. He attempts to map the world according to three main emotions: hope, fear, and humiliation. Moisi claims, "But now some Americans are starting to doubt the unique value of America's individualism" (Moisi 114). Moisi is correct in the way that he states that some Americans have lost hope in themselves and the American individualism, which has resulted in the fading of the American dream. The Americans Moisi describes are generally individuals who have gone through financial hardships and have different definitions of the American Dream. In the United States, the American Dream is a very vague idea, as people tend to see only their own viewpoints and perceptions. The American Dream is to have social stability, be able to achieve one's full potential, and start a new life where one won't be judge by his or her past. Despite the social class or extent of poverty a

Is Australia a Racist Country?

"Australia is the most racist country on Earth." This statement is expressed as though it were a proven fact, yet no one seems able to explain the evidence for such a damaging comment. Reasons such as the treatment of Aboriginals and asylum seekers are usually highlighted whenever this topic arises. I do not believe Australia is the most racist country and will support my opinion by discussing Australia's racial discrimination laws, multicultural population and the different perceptions of what racist behaviour actually is. This paper is directed at those who do believe Australia is the most racist country in the hope that by the end of it they will feel differently. Historically it can't be denied that Australia was a racist country in the past, particularly in the treatment of the Aboriginal people. This attitude was extended to other races in the first half of the 20th century when th

Dehumanization in the Novel 1984

In 1984, dehumanization of the Outer Party is shown through torture in the Ministry of Love, brainwashing by propaganda, and the use of the telescreen at home. Dehumanization of the Outer Party was ever present in the novel 1984 through torture in the Ministry of Love. In the Ministry of Love, Mr. O'Brien tortures Winston in a secluded room deep within the ministry and in the infamous Room 101. You knew the room that O'Brien tortured Winston in was deep inside the ministry because you could feel the pressure and there were no windows. In this room, O'Brien prepares Winston to become a fully functioning Party member and tries to convert him without torturing him in Room 101. O'Brien uses technology for his own good to torture Winston. He uses the dial, which whe

The Act of Biblical Ordination

The word ordination comes from the Latin word Ordinatio, which means to bestow an ordo, (gark tnel, gark dal), or to appoint an official to an office. The Armenian word Dzernatrutyun comes from the Greek word cheirotonia, which means "the lifting up of hands." In Classical Greek, this word signifies the act of election, but early Christianity extends it to designate not just the first half of the process of clerical appointment, but the whole ordination – both election and prayer with the laying on of hands. Primarily, the word seems to have been understood as a reference to the second action, rather the first- the lifting up/laying on of hands in prayer –and thus, that gesture received greater prominence. The person called for ordination lifts up his hand saying, "Here I am". In Acts 8:17, we find the first usage of the word dzernatrutyun, "Then they laid their hands on them and they received the Holy Spirit." Similar usage is found in 2 Ti
