The Poetry of Clause McKay

During the early 1900's in the United States of America, African Americans were subjected to racism, hatred and violence at the hands of White Americans. African Americans were faced with a choice to fight back with violence, assimilate to the way things were or try to change the way they were viewed by showing pride and courage to speak out against the unjust treatment. In this essay I will discuss of two poems written by Claude McKay. The first poem we will analyze is To The White Fiends, it shows themes of hatred and violence inflicted by White Americans and the poem also shows a sense of pride and value of one's self being African American by not giving into hatred. In the second poem In Bondage, we will explore the themes of consuming hatred that you can't escape and the value of human life. The poem To The White Fiends shows a theme of hatred towards African Americans from White Americans and pride and value of being an African American that does not project hate. This poem w

Noble Characters in Julius Caesar

Julius Caesar, by William Shakespeare, contains a variety of characters who exemplify noble and honorable traits. Portia, wife of Brutus, and Calpurnia, wife of Julius Caesar, are women who are very noble towards their husbands. Brutus, a conspirator, is a noble and honorable conspirator in this story. Julius Caesar is an honorable leader of the people. Throughout the story Julius Caesar by William Shakespeare, the characters Portia, Calpurnia, Julius Caesar, and Brutus all demonstrate noble and honorable characteristics. In this play, Portia and Calpurnia are noble wives. Portia is the wife of Brutus. Throughout the story, Portia grows suspicious of Brutus' behavior. He appears preoccupied with personal matters, making no time for his wife. "Dwell I but in the suburbs/ Of your good pleasure? If it be no more,/ Portia is Brutus' harlot, not his wife" (2.1, lines 286-288, p.67). In modern English, the quote translate to: Am I not your wife? I deserve to know what the secret y

Rube Goldberg Machines

Physics is the study of the properties of matter, and the laws governing the natural world. The forces of physics controls how objects move and react. Concepts in physics give thorough explanations as to how those forces work. Kinematics, forces, Newton's Laws, and momentum can all be demonstrated through the Rube Goldberg machine, and other scenarios. The purpose of our specific Rube Goldberg machine, was to water a plant. The 6 step process begins with a marble accelerating down a PVC pipe, which leads to a ramp. Once the marble reaches the ramp, it knocks a line of dominoes. The dominoes hit a plastic car, which parks at the end of the ramp, for visual aesthetics. The marble passes the dominoes and the car, continuing down the ramp, to the barrier. At the end of the barrier sits a weight, which the marble knocks down. The weight falls into a cup, suspended by fishing line, attached to a PVC pipe lever/seesaw. The cup forces the PVC pipe lever down, which pulls the fishing line away

Setting Curfews for High School Students

Many students have curfews set by their parents. I believe some parents set curfews for punishment and some set curfews just for the protection of their child. Although many students do not have a curfew, this might be because their parents are not as strict or simply because some parents do not find it necessary. Communities should not impose curfews on high school students because curfews should be up to their parents, students today need freedom, and parent should have trust in their child to be home at a reasonable time. Curfews should be up to the students parents because their parents usually decide for them and what they believe is right. Parents should be able to raise their own child how they want, which includes deciding whether or not their child should have a curfew or not. Students today also need freedom to stay out with their friends until a reasonable time. Having a social life is healthy for students growing mind and helps them want to do better in school as well. Having a happy mind will motivate students more and help them to grow and learn from their mistakes. This will assist students to work and participate in social act

Abortion Law Limitations

Gerth argues that there should be changes and limitation to abortion laws. You have bizarre stories of pregnant females harming their selves trying to trigger a miscarriage, because of the laws and requirements to get an abortion. In other countries less economically developed, contraception are made more available and charities explain how to use those contraception. In there were over 200,000 abortions last year, which is very confusing for Gerth. In the UK you can get on a birth control pill, without parental consent, at the age of 16. Along with the birth control pill, you can also get with a morning-after pill, with the same criteria. In England you can abort to up 24 weeks, at present, if you have the permission from two doctors. Gerth also believe that these laws are faulty. She believes that the abortion limit should be down to 12 weeks, like many European countries. She also thinks it should not be requires to have two doctors sign but rather one. Stating it could take weeks f

Creationist and Evolutionist World Views

Still one of the most debated topics in the religious and scientific world is creationism vs evolution. One states that God is the creator of all things making the world and universe as we know it in six days. The other states that man evolved from basic building blocks of life into what we are today. The facts point to evolution and the faith points to creation. But what if they can coexist? The creationism worldview is routed just a couple pages into the bible. Genesis 1-2 explains the creation all of things in the following summary. Day one God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was dark so God had to create light. The creation of light made it so that there could be day and there could be night. Day two God created a dome in the midst of the waters. This dome is what separated the waters from the waters forming a sky. Day three God created land and sea separating the dry from the wet on earth. Dry land was called earth and the waters that were gathered were called seas.

Prostitution in Catfish and Mandala

Prostitution becomes a multifaceted symbol within Andrew Pham's Catfish and Mandala as it represents self-abnegation within Vietnam, past financial survival for Andrew's family, and a temporary solution for his admitted emotional limitedness. On the other hand, it signifies guilt and shame for Andrew as it allows him to mirror the emotional unavailability that he showed for Chi, who was his older sister that committed suicide as a postoperative male named Minh. He expresses both positive and undignified attitudes towards prostitution. These dichotomized feelings reflect his inner struggle with masculinity and are mirrored in his feelings towards the people of Vietnam because he searches for his identity in both the land and the women of Vietnam. Both become targets of his displaced self-hatred and guilt. As his journey progresses and he purges himself of self-loathing, his attitudes towards Vietnam's people become more positive. His discussion of prostitutes dissipates, and Pham increa

William Penn and Colonial Pennsylvania

During the Reformation of the seventeenth century, the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers), led by George Fox, created their own denomination based on the belief that God is present as an, "Inner Light," in each person. This Quaker thought flowed from George Fox to William Penn and led to inspire him to establish a haven for Quakers and persecuted groups. The British King owed the young Penn's father 16,000 pounds for a war he helped finance and unpaid salary. During that period, Quakers were persecuted in England for refusing to attend the services of the Anglican Church by the Act of Uniformity 1559, and forbidden from holding their own religious meetings through the Conventicle Act of 1664. Thus, after his father's death, William Penn asked for the money to be paid in land in the New World. Thus, he was granted his claim, and, influenced by many factors, the new colony was born. The culture of Quakers, common people's lack of social rights, the growing desire for fair g

Research Paper - Genetic Engineering

Imagine a world without cancer, Alzheimer or any other genetic disease. Imagine a world in which there would be no worry about what illnesses plants are carrying or transmitting. Imagine a world where there is no hunger. Imagine a world in which the biggest concern is getting an arm broken or getting a cold. That's the world that genetic engineering can bring into existence. Genetic engineering is the process by which the DNA of an organism is changed. This change is done by adding or removing one or more traits of the DNA of a cell. Genetic engineering is usually associated with genetically modified or GM foods. However, it is so much more and its applications increase every day. Genetic engineering can be applied in many different fields; however, the applications it has in agriculture and medicine are by far the ones that are going to change the world as we know it today. Genetic engineering can also be known for the amount of controversy it brings with it. Since nature is the mos

Character Analysis - Gertrude in Hamlet

In the play by William Shakespeare, Gertrude portrays a Queen who some readers may assume a love and caring mother. However, Gertrude is a shallow mother who only thinks about herself and her loving, unexpected new husband, King Claudius. While reading Hamlet, as the reader focus on one character, the reader can examine why that character is significant in the play. Gertrude is significant to the play in many ways. If she was never put into the play, the reader would lack detail what's going on in the play. Especially toward her son Hamlet. She and Hamlet shared a negative relationship throughout the whole book. There were some parts in the play the reader starts to notice where their relationship stands. Even though Gertrude was a shallow witch who brought out her selfish side, she is a character that brought out one of the significance why she's in the play in the first place. The reader's perspective on Gertrude, was negative in the first few Acts. Gertrude's character made it

Shakespeare in Love: A Woman in a Man's Profession

Topic Question: Queen Elizabeth turns up on stage at the end of Shakespeare in Love and says 'I know something of a woman in a man's profession'. Yet she makes no order for this to change nor does she more than mildly rebuke those who think that a woman on the stage is the 'beginning of the end'. She appears to be as trapped in the constraints of her gender as 'Thomas Kent'. Explore the issues of gender as it is portrayed within the film. "The way societies think about and treat women is often considered a means of measuring how civilised they are"– Dusinberre, 2003 William Shakespeare is arguably the greatest writer and poet of the English language. His literature works written over 400 years ago, have survived the challenge of time, so much so that Shakespeare's plays, sonnets and poems are still considered to this day an integral facet within the study of culture, society and language. Due to the depth and conceptuality of Shakespeare's plays, directors such as Ba

A Lack of Rules in Lord of the Flies

In the novel Lord of the Flies by William Golding, the conch signifies that all humans are inherently evil when there is no authority enforcing any rules. The main conflict is that the boy's civility diminishes as the conch and its authority diminishes. This is like in the film The Purge where there is 12 hours of no laws and no authority. Within those twelve hours the people go crazy. This is exactly what we see in the novel except the boys slowly lose their civility because in the beginning they have most of their civility. Towards the middle and end of the novel, their civility begins to fade. Golding uses the conch as a symbol of authority. The conch is used by Golding to represent that humans are naturally evil. In the beginning of the novel Golding makes the conch and the boys in perfect condition. The little uns shout that Ralph should be the leader because he is holding the conch, this happens almost immediately after they land on the island. " 'Him with the shell.'

Religion Diversity in Canada

Christianity is the largest religion in Canada; outnumbering the second biggest religion Judaism and Islam by thirty-five to one. As Canada accepts different cultures and religions Canadians have become tolerant of different religions. Canada has always been a Christian country, but lately Canada has started to become a more religion diverse country.1 In September of 2013 the Quebecois proposed the Charter of Quebec Values, this would mean anyone working in Quebec would not be able to wear overly religious symbols. "If the state is neutral, those working for the state should be equally neutral in their image," said Drainville. For employees to be seen as neutral they would not be able to wear religious symbols especially Kippas, Turbans, Burkas, Hijabs and "large" crosses. If passed there would be some organizations that would be able to refuse to participate for a 5 year term. While some organizations would be able to refuse it would be mandatory for many organizations including

The Biomechanics of Snowboarding

Snowboarding is a winter sport that is loved by people of all ages. Depending upon a rider's natural stance, they will either ride with their left foot forward (which is riding "regular" stance) or with their right foot forward (which is called a "goofy" stance). There have been both goofy and regular riders who have achieved great success at World Cups and Winter Olympics, including Shaun White (regular stance) and Torah Bright (goofy stance). Snowboarding was first discovered in 1929 when a man cut a plank of plywood and secured it to his feet using a clothesline and horse reins. In 1964 Sherman Poppen, an American surf fanatic, created snowboard history. He dreamed about surfing on snow, and as a result he invented a toy for his daughter that he called a "Snurfer ". The Snurfer consisted of 2 skies bound together with a rope at the nose of the skis to hold onto. It was extremely popular, and Sherman sold 500,000 Snurfers in the first 2 years. He sta

A Broken Balance

Among the many factors that shape the age-old culture of Umuofia, some of the most unique are the defined roles of men and women. When the "white men," or missionaries, bring unfamiliar Christian beliefs and customs to the Ibo people, one of the significant differences is their view on gender roles. As they establish themselves and grow in size and popularity, the defined line between the roles of men and women is blurred, leading to the downfall of the Ibo culture. While at first glance Umuofia seems like an oppressive, male dominant society, the traditions and beliefs of the Ibo reveal that women too hold a sacred, valued place in society, respected in different ways. For centuries, Umuofia and its neighboring villages have valued men as the political and judicial leaders, protectors, farmers, and rulers of their households. "Okonkwo ruled his household with a heavy hand. His wives, especially the youngest, lived in perpetual fear of his fiery temper." (p.13)

Love in the Poetry of Blake and Wroth

The nature of love can be explicated in many different ways. In William Blake's poem, "The Clod and the Pebble," love is perceived in a very contrasting way. Love can be selfish, negative, and bitter or selfless, prompting optimism, altruism, and innocence. In the poem "Song," however, Lady Mary Wroth explores how love is demanding, overindulging, and endlessly unsatisfied. In the poem "The Clod and the Pebble", the clod is described as "trodden with cattle´s feet" reflecting on how the clod is continuously being abused, promoting love as a forceful, agonizing emotion. Considering that the clod is being trampled on illustrates that love can make you feel worthless, resulting in pain and this pain won´t stop as you are endlessly being crushed by an unstoppable force. Yet, through all of this, "so sung a little Clod of Clay". This exemplifies that even though the clod is being trodden on, it will still sing a simple song and be content. The sibil

Slavery in Eastern Pennsylvania

In Eastern Pennsylvania, Leigh Valley became the heartland of Marvarian settlements. They were Methodist who grew corn and wheat, and were thick with dairy herds. There were Christian salvation, plenty of schools, dormitories, stores and barns. At 17, Joseph Sturgis opened his door to the painted faces of Munsee and Shawnee warriors who shot him in the face and raided the house. The warriors scalped the men who were not killed immediately, women hid upstairs, and the men did not have any weapons for self-defense. The warriors left and set fire to other places; some men and woman got away into the woods. The Indian warriors stripped food from stores, butchered 60 cattle, set fire to buildings and feasted in celebration. Teedyuscung's father spoke English and was there when English Quakers settled in 1680's, he was baptized by the Morvarians. They became dependent on white traders because they were stripped of everything. The white people supplied them with guns and ammunition, knives, b

Exploring Connections - King Richard III/ Looking for Richard

The respective purpose of each composer helps to illustrate their context and the pre-occupations of each. Shakespeare aims to achieve a dramatization of the historical events that lead to the overthrow of the York dynasty that justifies the re-establishment of the Tudor Dynasty. Conversely, Pacino's work is instructive in nature; it aims to both educate and entertain. Pacino states: "Our main goal with this project is to reach an audience that would not normally participate in this kind of language and world". Looking for Richard is used as a teaching tool; it celebrates the power of the actor and common person to interpret and absorb Shakespeare's ideas. Through inter-textual reference of the Tempest, Pacino emphasizes the concept & importance of the 'role of the actor'. Similar, assistant director, Frederick Kimball states: "Actors truly are the possessors, the proud inheritors of the understanding of Shakespeare". Therefore, the educational aims are two-fold: to not only make Shakespeare's works accessible but to also illustrate th

Themes of Morality in The Book Thief

Markus Zusak masterfully depicts the struggles of humans in tumultuous times, in his novel The Book Thief. Liesel and her adopted family navigate through the storm that is Nazi Germany. Liesel experiences the crude brutality of the Fascist Nazi Regime, as a child her curiosity drives her to the truth. Discovering the power of words as she learns the language, Zusak incorporates other moral themes in his novel, another one being the struggle of survival and the selfishness that accompanies it. This is seen when Max abandons his family to seek refuge with the Hubermans. Zusak also utilizes Death as a character to show the worth of humans and their psychology. In The Book Thief, by Markus Zusak, deep philosophical undertones are explored, including the struggle between psychological egoism and ethical egoism, the power of words, and human nature. In the The Book Thief egoism is illustrated in multiple facets, from Max abandoning his family for his survival, Hans's feeding of the Jew, an

Money as a Motivation for Work

Does "If you pay peanuts, you get monkeys" principle still work? The word "motivation" means to indicate the interests, desires of a worker to apply certain efforts, and take necessary steps to satisfy the career needs. If there had been an opportunity to ask the company owners what kind of employees they want to have in their companies, the answer would have been clear. All of them would come to a unanimous senses about having an employee who has the ability to think and act independently, the ability to show creativity, take reasonable risks, and ability to take responsibility for their actions. How does a company find itself in a situation when a worker that has been chosen exactly by the company authorities' starts being lazy but his work turns into an acceptable one? There could possibly be malfunctions during the process of employee selection, but what about the skills that the majority of the company owners are proud of? The skill that show your talents. Money is the engine to everything, but sometimes it may not be enough to keep the employee working hard with a strong amount of effort. Managers apply a lot of effort to make the workin

The Dream Speech of Coach Carter

In the year 1999 at Richmond High School, only 6% of all high school students were enrolled in college in the fall immediately following graduation (Coach Carter). This is the case for Richmond due to the lack of motivation from the students and the faculty. Ken Carter takes the job as the high school basketball coach and vows to change the statistic for his basketball players with a contract to stay on the team. The players did not respect the contract so Carter responded back with cancelled practice and games. Creating chaos in the community, the executive board of the county intervened to end the coach's decision. In Coach Carter's speech to justify his stance to the board, he uses rhetorical appeals and body language to persuade the board not to intervene as he is creating the idea of the American Dream for his basketball players. The reaching of the American Dream is and has always been a hope of Americans (Choo). The idea has driven the aspirations and hopes of Americans citize

The Green Wave Tackling Machine

Sweat drips off an almost Grecian god-like statue. Fatigue seems as though it's setting in, but he refuses to give and pushes his body harder. "Pain is just weakness escaping the body." This is a philosophy many athletes over the years have lived by. This is a typical Tuesday and Thursday for the 5'10, 230-pound former tackling machine. Eric Thomas Jr. has had a very grueling 6 months, but it has only intensified his love for the game of football. Football is everything to him. It is what he lives and breaths. It is simply his life. It's a Friday afternoon. The sun is shining through the window of Five Guys, a local burger joint right outside the gates of Louisiana State University. The smell of old grease and frying hamburgers immediately turns my stomach. I take some time to gather my thoughts as I wait for Eric to come out of the restroom. As soon as he walks out the restroom he immediately catches the attention of some of the patrons in the restaurant due to the many bu

Charlotte Bronte and Women of the 19th Century

Some of the nineteenth century novels that have been written by female writers focus on the development of women in a patriarchal society. Charlotte Bronte's "Jane Eyer" is one such novel that has faced a lot of social criticism. Published in 1847, the novel faced a lot of social criticism as Bronte challenges the 19th century idea of a women and creates the character of Jane who demands respect, wants to work , is bold and shows the act of passion. Charlotte Bronte herself experienced a childhood without a mother which is why her novel somewhat depicts her feelings and emotions regarding a girl having to face society without having a motherly figure to look up to. It is possible that the reason behind Jane's character and nature has a lot to do with a missing mother figure. The missing mother is a stoke characteristic in a Victorian novel. Jane questioning various social and moral negotiations is due to her experience of a maternal loss. The whole concept of a misguided child that a
